OG bagel shop in Alameda. Not part of the new wave of sandwich-oriented shops. Just a place that boils bagels in the back and dumps them in baskets in the front. And the bagels are tasty! The bagels are New York style, although they are a little outside the normal range of variation. We ordered a couple of poppy and sesame bagels, with a side of cream cheese. The crust on some of the bagels was soft and pale, while others had benefitted from a little more time in the oven and came out crisp. The dough inside, though, had a flat sweetness to it. There was a hint of malt flavor but it tasted more like a lightly sweet bread. The crumb was at the ideal midpoint between fluffy and chewy -- enough structure to hold up toppings but still light enough not to break your jaw. The cream cheese was on the firmer side but had a respectable tang. Perfectly matched to the bagel itself in both cases thickness and flavor. The trick here is to look closely at the bins: check which bagels came out golden brown and ask for those. This is a bakery after all! At the start of every day, I needed a light breakfast and coffee or tea and found this little spot near my hotel. It's in a shopping area with shared parking and easy to get to. The bagel shop is small, with a handful of indoor seats, plus some outdoor nearby. They had a selection of fresh made bagels, plus different toppings and fixed sandwiches. It was like, 11am or something when I went in and it was still kinda busy. 2-3 people in front of me. Some staying to eat inside, some eating outside since it was a beautiful day. I don't remember which bagel I wanted, but they said it wouldn't be ready for 10-12 minutes. Seeing as there was an abundance of bagels already ready. I chose a French toast bagel. Because, why not. This place is okay. It does the job well in order to have something quick while having one of my top favourite "snacks". The bread was too chewy but the seating was on point. I think my favourite are the cream cheeses. One is able to purchase a small or large container from them on the side, which are fresh and totally worth it. I got the garden veggie and it was quite robust with pieces of veggies. They have good prices for a bagel filled with schmear. I didn't see any veggies like tomatoes and red onions. Service was a bit off. Not sure if the staff member was having a rough morning but it felt like I was being talked like if I didn't know what I was doing. Plenty of seating outside, there's a park nearby so a nice afternoon would with bagels would be nice. And the inside is spacious with tables. I had a package to drop off at fedex and noticed this shop next door. So I decided to walk in and see what they had. I had already made of my mind that I was going to purchase something before walking into the shop. There were about 5 people already in the shop. No greeting when I walked in. But I definitely noticed that they saw me when I entered. I stood and looked at the sign to make a decision. The nice cashier asked me if I was ready and I said no, so she told me to let her know when I was ready. After deciding I walked up and a man stood at the register and asked me I was ready. No hi or anything, he stood and looked at me with a blank expression. After I placed my order, I was paying and noticed that a white woman walked in after me, but was greeted profusely. The man bagged my items and left them on the counter while he tended to the women who walked in after me. The vibes were definitely off, which is upsetting because I wanted to come back. read more

If you love bagels, you'll find all sorts. There's the classic one to the cheese one to the odd but satisfying ones. It's not just the bagels. There are a good number of different cream cheeses as well. So what do I choose from the menu? I'm a sucker for hot links so the fact that they have a hot link wrapped in bagel bread BLEW MY MIND. So clearly I ordered two. You have the option of getting it hot or not. For me, I had to get it hot. And my goodness was that the right choice! The hot link was a good amount of spicy and chewy. The bread was soft yet not mushy. Add those two to some jalapeño cream cheese and viola! Instant satisfaction! So the morning hot link bagel was good. What about the second one? I ate that one for dinner. Warming a hot link bagel in the microwave may seem to be a bad idea, but the food tasted just as good if not better than when it gets heated up at the bagel spot. In hindsight, I should have eaten bagel fresh. The flavor of the chicken salad was nice and peppery. The veggies included were fresh and I appreciated the pickle spears. Toasted bagels are key and this place gets it. Highly recommend to eat your toasted bagel right away at its optimal. A variety of bagels and cream cheese to choose from. Prepared fairly quickly. Lox bagel (together and cream cheese in the middle) or sandwich (open face with cream cheese on both sides) consisted of smoked salmon, red onions, tomatoes, and capers. I'd add a diff cream cheese next time to make it more interesting as opposed to doing the standard cream cheese. My favorite thus far is probably the jalapeño cheese bagel with garlic herb cream cheese and egg (it's scrambled egg). Honestly if this place did a runny egg I think I just found my favorite bagel spot in the Bay Area. read more

The Great Alameda Bagel Taste Off of 2021. Our family kept debating which was the best bagel of the four (!) bagel places on Alameda Island (sorry bay farm). Criteria was wide ranging and kind of depends what you like in a bagel. My wife prefers crunchy outside and soft inside. I prefer a tastier, softer bagel. we agreed to meet in the middle. We rated not just the bagel itself, but also the cream cheese, two sandwiches (sausage/egg/cheese and a vegan sando), as well as the service and decor. Levy's was the winner, mostly driven by having the second best bagel (Alameda Bagel & donut wins), by far the best sandwiches (especially the Greenwich vegan bagel sando, which is fantastic), and great service. If you're just looking for a delicious soft bagel, Alameda Bagel and Donuts are great. Their sandos were in third but you can also get a donut hole while you're there, so Alameda Bagel gets second place. Bagel Street Cafe has the best decor, including outdoor seating, so to put them in third is a bit harsh. Bagels were pretty good, service was fine, it's a good spot, and more options for sandos. Last place by far was house of bagel. Poor service, awful sandos, and meh bagels at best. read more
