Winstead's has been a KC classic for as long as I can remember. My grandparents used to bring me here for their famous steak burgers when I was a little girl. When visiting for my grandma's memorial, my husband and I needed a quick breakfast before a busy day ahead. Of course, he was scrolling through Yelp and came across a nearby Winstead's. Yes, please! It would bring back so many childhood memories. They serve your basic, diner breakfast for a CHEAP price. I feel like the prices haven't changed in years!! My ham, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich was a little over $3. Really?! That is even cheaper than McDonald's. It was so yummy too, I almost wanted to order a second. My husband ordered their basic breakfast with 2 eggs, ham, hashbrowns, and 2 pancakes. LOADS of food for a little over $8. We left happy campers! The service was friendly and quick. We'll definitely be back on another visit! PSA: This is an old school diner, don't expect anything fancy (pretty sure the decor hasn't changed since the 80s), but do expect a yummy diner breakfast for a great price. read more

I've lived in the KC metro for just over six years and had heard about the long history of Winstead's from my wife's relatives who live out here, but for whatever reason never tried it until this past week. Winstead's has been around KC forever and I heard good things about their burgers. I know many of them have closed their doors since I moved out here and I wanted to make an effort to at least try this KC institution before they all disappear. Winstead's is a sit down diner environment (think of a Dennys like atmosphere), so while there is a drive through, I don't necessarily consider it fast food by definition. We ordered with a waitress and the menu was very simplistic which I liked. Basic breakfast and lunch/dinner items and that was pretty much it. I will say, the prices shocked me in the sense that it was very cheap compared to other places. I ordered a double cheeseburger with everything on it and it was like $4.50. The size of the burgers are smaller than some other establishments, but let's face it, Americans can use a cultural change in portion sizes. The burger was good (nothing great, but good). The tots were basic tots out of a fryer and overall it was a good meal. Service was tough as like many places, they were short staffed. I'm glad I got to finally try this KC establishment and would say you have to at least try it for the rich history at the very least. read more

When we walked in the store there was very few tables cleared from previous customers. We did finally find a clean table but had to wait a long time for a waiter. Disappointed in the meal. Little food for the money. At the end of our meal the waiter was too busy with the next table of guys to pay attention to two old ladies. We ended up getting up and paying on the way out instead of at the table like anyone else. No tip for this waiter. read more

The Winsteads located in Leawood, KS was great. The server, Madison, was funny and kept my 2 12 year old granddaughters entertained. The food was good and when we got there it was happy hour for our drinks. My husband and I got the chocolate milkshake which was great. Their burgers were a hit with everyone at our table. Original walking in the wife and I were hesitant as the establishment looked somewhat dated and faded. The waitress Sedona was very kind and very quick with taking our order and knew the menu really well. The wife and I ordered two single burgers, onion rings and 2 milkshakes and I must say it was very good. I'd rate the burger a 8.0, onion rings an 8.5, and the chocolate shake a 9.0. I'm still somewhat confused about why there wasn't a lot of people there as the food was good and the price was too. My only theory to why there aren't a lot of people is possibly because of the location and dated look. We will be going back! read more

All those servers there are creating theft. After leaving a great cash tip a few days ago. I looked over my account because I had that happen before at the peanut. Is this place supposed to be a burger place? Ick! I bought the single "with everything" plus cheese (cause cheese isn't everything...only pickles ketchup and onion are everything) and fifty/fifty (fries and onion rings). The total was $5.25. What I got was a bag of soggy, grease dripping fries, some less than impressive onion rings and a ketchup, pickle and onion sandwich. You will notice from my photo that the cheese slice is about as thick as the patty thickness. You can hardly even see the meat on the burger. Pitiful. Stick with the cherry limeades. I'm not gonna lie...the last one I got was mainly siera mist and had hardly any cherry flavoring in it... so I really hope that was a fluke. You can't beat stepping back into the 1950's for a steak burger and a milkshake. Winstead's in old school remake of a malt shop with the classic 50's designs and colors. It doesn't hurt that milkshakes are my favorite food, but I love Winstead's! Every time I go I feel like I'm stepping back in time to a greasy spoon diner that is just clean enough to keep me comfortable. The wait staff is friendly and the food is ready in about 3 minutes; not surprising since the menu has basically three choices, how many slices of meat do you want on your burger; fries or rings (or both) and vanilla or chocolate for your shake? If those were the only decisions I had to make for the rest of my life, I could die a happy man. read more

I am a long time lover of Winsteads. Loved it since the 1960's. I moved from KC 35 years ago and try to get to a Winsteads when I visit. Guess there is now only 3 left. This one was hard to get to. Some road construction and where it sits on the I-435 and Roe interchange. I had my traditional double cheeseburger and fries. I thought the quality of the hamburger had dropped. Almost tasteless. Last night we went to Winsteads just north of Church of Resurrection. Usually a bit of a wait, but extra long wait and we were second in line. We got 2 cheeseburgers and one 50/50 and a drink to go. We parked and ate in the car...within 3 minutes...the burger was completely cold, the bun was at least 2 days old. I heard from one of the waitresses that the new manager is really cheap with everything! Well, she was telling the truth... This place seems like the original Steak and Shake from back in the day. I am not sure about whether it is authentic or modeled after a 50s style burger place. The burgers here are delicious, thin patties cooked to perfection. I had a double Winstead with cheese and everything on it and a side of onion rings. The onion rings are huge and the side is big enough to share. I also split a Cherry Limeade with my boyfriend since his mom raves about them. I can certainly see why! They even put a scoop of lime sherbet into the drink... yum! This place is going to become a staple on my visits to KC! read more

Food was outstanding! Service was poor. For the life of us we could not get the waitress to fill our water glasses or see how we were doing. Had to get up to find her. Facilities need to be refreshed. This store has a look of neglect. But... honestly the burgers were great! Probably the waitress was having a bad day. read more

Had myself a meal at Winstead's this evening. Right as I walked in I knew I would LOVE this place. A classic old school diner! Our waitress was so fun and there were TWO birthdays so there was plenty of signing and ice cream to be had. I got the triple Winstead steak burger with bacon. It was fabulous! I love a good steak burger! I threw in the 50/50 (half fries, half tater tots) on the side. Fries were good, tots were a little too crispy for my liking. But in the end everything was good and very plentiful after a long day on the golf course. The only other problem I would have is the rambunctious teenagers hanging out in the parking lot causing a fuss and not letting us park. I know this has nothing to do with Winstead's itself but those pesky teenagers did aggravate me. Winstead's is scrumptious! read more

Winstead's is a perfect place to go when you're craving a yummy, simple burger. If anything were to compare to In-N-Out (just the burger) this would probably be it. It doesn't stop there though... limeades (w/ a scoop of lime sherbet), chocolate malts and vanilla diet cokes are also on the menu here along with a lot of other diner fare. the service is a little spotty, but the food is always good. I love Me a Winsteads burger. They are always perfectly cooked, get a double they're the best with everything. The skyscraper malt is great for sharing with 2 to 3 people. I usually a get a cherry Coke or a vanilla Coke. The 50-50 or the french fries definitely are amazing. Service here is just as good as any of the others. Fast and efficient, and always friendly. This restaurant is clean and usually you can get in and out fairly quickly. The drive-through is very fast as well. Great place for a quick lunch. read more

Both, our server called "Frosty" and the special chocolate frosty, keep us coming back for more! The burgers are designed to be thin - so order a double if you are a normal hungry human or triple if you are a ravenous teenager. The cherry limeades are delicious with scoops of lime sherbet - and they use that little pellet ice that everyone loves. Fries and onion rings are delicious served up hot. I'll pick Winsteads over McDonalds and other fast food chains any day of the week. Their steakburgers, fries, and onion rings are some of Kansas City's old fashioned burger joint style food at its finest (but no comparison to more refined burger restaurants). Yes, this location along with all of their other locations is drab. Yes, service is a little spotty. Yes, they cut corners to avoid paying extra people or fixing up the joint. But would you expect your experience at this Kansas City landmark to be any different? You're paying for no-frills environment that hit every branch of the pink and blue pastel tree on the way down. The night we dined here, the first evening after a morning of snowy weather, only two other people were eating. One server and one food runner worked behind the service area. Our server never stopped smiling and was diligent until 30 other people strolled in taking up a bunch of tables and filling the restaurant One was a 12 top. It's not their fault they had the same burger craving, right? With only one server on duty and woefully understaffed, our gal handled the room with ease, albeit a little slow. And I think that's the moral for Winsteads and perhaps life in general. Take life a little slower at Winsteads. Stop and smell the milkshakes. Take the less road less traveled (grilled cheese sandwich). Let go and let good. It's a three star review because it lacks a lot. It's not so clean in here. Tables are often left dirty and atmosphere is not always priority number one. You can, however, count on one thing. When you order a single, double, or triple with or without cheese, you'll be eating the same style hamburger they've been serving in Kansas City for years. It ain't gourmet and it won't knock your socks off. It is however, a blast from the past in all its greasy spoony goodness that is sure to take you back. Winstead's is a Kansas City hamburger icon. The most famous one is on the Country Club Plaza and this one is in the suburbs of Johnson County. With the same menus I looked for differences and found few (a good thing ). The look is pretty much the same (not counting the charmless suburb), so on to what really counts. Great surprise was that the burgers and fries were almost identical - with but one exception: I've never had to add salt on the Plaza, guess that's for the milder constitutions in Overland Park. (I've also found this in their BBQ spots). Back to the burgers, great seasoning (less salt), fresh buns, actually melted cheese, and really thin. But don't worry, there's enough meet. Usually a thick burger guy, I will always make a Windstead's exception! Fries are full of flavor and never burnt. But to do it right you need to add a shake or limeade, and finish off with their famous ultimate sunday - the serious "Skyscraper!" So if you can't make it to the Plaza, and can do without a charmfilled neighborhood (that means ignoring the Sonic next door), this one should be you hamburger heaven - don't worry, there'll be a salt shaker on your table. read more

Walking into this Winstead's location at 12:45 and seeing it with just 3 tables filled and it's dingy, old-fashioned decor, I didn't have much expectations for the place. However, I have to say that I was happy with my experience here, both with the service and with the food. Our server was very attentive and did everything right: treated the kids nicely, brought the food out on time (we ordered kids first, then the adults, so we all ended up finishing at the same time), came back when we wanted to make another order to-go, etc. The food was very good. My single steakburger with everything but onions and cheese had great beef flavor, despite the fact that the patty was so thin (I think the quality beef and brown crust helps in the flavor department). I thought the pickles were a *touch* too overpowering, but it wasn't a big deal. I could have used an extra onion ring in the 50/50 order, but the fries and onion rings were crispy and delicious. And all of our chocolate, vanilla, and cherry milkshakes were a bit too thick for my taste but very tasty. It's too bad that Winstead's doesn't have more business. From what I hear, this is a Kansas City institution and deservedly so. In this world of thick, gourmet burgers with crazy toppings and local made buns (which I love but it has a time and a place) and In-N-Out (sorry, Melisa V., but their burgers, fries, and shakes don't compare) Winstead's may have lost some of it's steam. Go here regularly for breakfast. The menu is small but you can add and switch it up however you like. I usually get a pancake and an egg any way I want it. Husband loves their biscuit and gravy. Always friendly great service. Sit anywhere you want and have a just like home breakfast.
