My husband surprised me with a trip to the wine outlet. I thought it was just a retailer, but it's so much more! I signed up for the Mastering the Art of Wine Tasting three-week course (Monday nights from 7 to around 9 pm at the store) and have been loving the experience so far. I also went to the annual April pig roast and tasting/sale, had a great time, and picked up several wines for myself and for friends and family. If you're a wine club member (free to join), you get $50 off the course and $1-3 off wines at the sale. The store is clean, well organized, and super cute, with lamps made from wine bottles. Wine Outlet has been around for years, and when they had their Green Lake store, we used to go there quite often. Fast forward 6 years, while they no longer have the Green Lake location, their original store is better than ever with an interesting selection, fair prices, and wine tasting facilities. What I really like is the fact that they have an interesting selection and wines of good value that you won't find anywhere else (I just tried my first lagrein wine this week from them and it was awesome). We have been wine club members for about a year and we really enjoy the offerings at Wine Outlet. Instead of having only one winery's wine, we have an assortment. We've taken classes and came out with a wealth of knowledge, stopped by during their specials and picked up ridiculous deals (a case of Napa white wine for $36 - that's $3 a bottle!) and overall just enjoy our visits where we usually get a few tastings too. Although we no longer live in Seattle, we are always happy to stop by for our quarterly wine club pick up! read more

This place is great for the following reasons: 1. It's chock-full of friendly people who actually know a LOT about wine. 2. You can walk in, admittedly know nothing about wine other than the fact you enjoy drinking it a lot and think you had a syrah once that was especially tasty (read: it was on the endcap for $7.99 last March at Trader Joe's. What was it called again? Huh.) 3. Said friendly, knowledgeable staff person will, whilst not judging you or turning up any noses at your complete fumbling lack of wine skills, send you home with a $9 bottle of something which would've cost $15 even at Trader Joe's that they're sure will be great with your (insert random dinner plan here)- and they'll be RIGHT. Mad skills, wine outlet. Mad skills. They also have a wine bar now where you can get some tasty snacks and try some fancy schmancy wines without paying super fancy prices- although I will admit it was kinda weird to also see some $7-10 glasses of wine on the menu when I know I can get the whole bottle for $11 like ten feet away...so I guess I'd stick with the still-exorbitantly-priced-bottle selections at the wine bar to really feel like you're justified sitting there to drink it. It was seven years ago today that the first Wine Outlet in Sodo. It is one year ago today that opened Greenlake Wines + Wine Bar (Elliott Wine Outlet opened 7 years ago last October). Every year, on the anniversary of the SoDo store, they throw a FREE pig roast to celebrate the occasion and to thank his wonderful customers for making it all possible. This year will mark the 7th fete. This is a big deal (last year we had five pigs roasted) with lots of partying and carrying on and wines to buy at very low prices. you should really mark your calendar and plan to attend the party. This place is great - Richard Kinssies was in the store both times I stopped by, and each time I bought excellent reasonably priced wine. The second time was Super Bowl Sunday, and they were offering free bratwurst and a wine tasting. Yup, that's right. Free pork. A couple of times a year they roast a pig. Free pork! Not your normal wine shop experience here. The proprietor, Richard Kinssies, was a former wine columnist, wine educator, and author. He continues to hold classes at Wine Outlet. You can learn a lot with a casual conversation or just hanging around at his shop. Richard hunts for wine bargains and passes them on to his customers. Consequently you'll find many wines not available on your local grocer's aisles. Quantities are often limited, we stop in on a regular basis to see what's recently come in. He's got a $uper deal on a tasty Barolo not found anywhere else. Many of the wines are available for tasting before you purchase. There's a wine club too, but unlike the others, you aren't stuck with expensive wines from the same winery every quarter. Here you get some distinctively different wines to try, pre notice on super specials and events and a discount on the Monday evening wine classes. read more

How often can you patronize a wine shop where a renowned wine writer, Richard Kinssies in this case, is there willing to spend as much time as you need to find the perfect wine? Wine should be fun. It does not need to be stuffy or expensive to be great . . . that is exactly why I love the wine outlet. It is stripped down, bare bones with some terrific buys and knowledgeable staff. I grabbed a sparkling shiraz to share at Thanksgiving, that was not only unique, but pretty tasty with the turkey. I decided to take their wine tasting class this Spring. It was well worth the time (3hours), but a little spendy. It seemed that the owner had filled the class with a few friends and employees, so there were just a few of us paying the full price ($125). Richard knows his stuff and makes more complex wines feel approachable. The email newsletter is great for special wine notices and they sponsor a number of tasting events with food - pig roast, salmon - however, I have yet to attend one. Wedding wine! I've been meaning to stop in for a while and I'm glad I did. Richard was helpful and informative. I purchased a Columbia Valley Red to try this evening. We'll definitely be back to do some tastings and purchase wine for our big day. The prices are affordable and each wine is hand selected which is really Eastern Washington-esque and I love that. If you want a great selection of wonderful wines, this is the place to go. Richard is a well of knowledge with interesting, informative stories and a great personality to match. I have never gotten a bad wine from here and the prices are phenomenal! He also holds classes every so often in the upstairs classroom in his store. I just took his food and wine pairing class, and had my mind blown with all the information he provided. I'm pretty sure I filled my entire paper with notes from all his great information. Being a wine club member gives you a lot of perks too! Lots of great discounts on wine and his Seattle wine school classes are $35 for wine club members, compared to the regular $65. I love the Wine Outlet! Richard knows how to pick his wines, and price them so that I can afford them. As far as I know, there is no other place in Seattle where you can sample a flight of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A while back, I attended a tasting class of Italian Brunello di Montalcino wines (amazing), and will be going to a sake wine tasting class next week. Classes are only $25! She was very sympathetic with the fact that our order had been misplaced. After 20 minutes on the phone, she finally located my account and remedied the situation. Interesting wine shop. They do have some fantastic value old world wines, though some of the cheaper bottles have not been up to standard. The staff is very friendly, bit sometimes not quite as knowledgeable as I would like them to be.
