Such a fun place to buy wine. Luckily they are located next door to a butcher shop which makes it so easy to come in and find your meals pair. They even offer a membership that allows you to sample exclusive wines and attend other events. Big shout out to their workers for providing extravagant service. The only reason why we came in was because we saw the free wine tasting sign outside. One of the wines we tried was so delicious we had to purchase one to have at home. Half the wines we tried during the tasting were first timers for me. To clarify some of the wines were not barrel aged. Instead were made using other techniques. I honestly didn't know grape wine could be made in other ways. There's so many unique wines in this place. The interior reminds me a library, but for wine They also had a wall full of rare American wines. Like most places that sell wine, their wine is also sorted by location. I'm excited to pop this bottle open later to compare with our other rare find wines. read more

I just noticed that some of the photos I posted from 2018 and 2021 should have been on the McCarthy & Schiering - Ravenna site, not the Queen Anne site. Anyways, I had just checked out Queen Anne Bottle Shop a few blocks west and decided to stop in M&S - Queen Anne before their closing time at 6pm Saturday (3/2/24). I used to live across the street from the Ravenna site and participated at various tastings and made purchases there for myself or as gifts for others. It's been awhile that I don't remember what year I joined their wine club. It was good to stop by here, to reacquaint myself with the Queen Anne shop layout. There was a group of four that scooted in after me for a tasting. This allowed me to give a full glance of the shelves, while the wine shop staff focused on them. It was nice to see that there's a section that have some half bottles or discounted vintages. Some French labels were intriguing. And a wide variety of champagne, if bubbles are your thing. It was nice to see many labels from WA and OR wineries. As I wrapped up my brief tour of the shop, I asked one of the retail shop staff about availability of Cayuse wines. He showed me the two bottles available from Horsepower Vineyards. Understandably well out of my price range at $175! However, he provided me additional helpful information on how to get on the contact list when the futures are released. read more

I have been to this business twice now. Both times I felt treated with polite indifference. The last time (Saturday, May 25, 2025), I felt I was ignored. I subscribed to their mailing list up until that day. It was the first time I had been to one of their wine tastings. The young Asian clerk spent all his time conversing with a hip young Asian male and then with an older Caucasian woman.Maybe I didn't fit his description of the kind of customer he wanted coming into McCarty and Schiering. I was looking for wine from Friuli, Italy, after having come back from Italy a few months ago. Their wine selection did not include more than one wine from that region. read more

On a recent Saturday trip to the neighborhood, after a lovely stroll in Ravenna Park, we were walking back to our car when we saw that this wine shop was offering a free wine tasting! Intrigued, we went inside to check it out (we hadn't done a wine tasting in close to 2 years because of COVID). Sure enough, M&S is once again offering wine tastings on Saturdays from 11-5, so go pay them a visit! The woman who led us through the tasting was kind, knowledgeable, and never made us feel like we had to buy anything, even though we ended up coming away with three bottles... :) we tasted around 5-6 wines, both whites and reds, all from either WA or CA. She let us know the shop does themed tastings, so it changes each weekend--fun idea! After we finished our tasting, we perused the shop for some bottles and were amazed by the vast selection. There's some great affordable options and also some more pricey wines if you're looking to splurge. They have lots of hard-to-find labels here that you likely won't find elsewhere. The man who rung us up also told us they have a wine club, which is a huge cost savings if you buy nice wine regularly. We are even considering it ourselves since we have an M&S shop in our neck of the woods in Queen Anne! Here's a tip you won't want to miss: Don't sleep on some of the best saucisson sec (like hard salami) at the counter, which comes from the Italian restaurant Cafe da Pino just across the street. The owner over there makes his own sausage and salami, and it paired perfectly with the wines. Love to see these awesome neighborhood collaborations! read more

This is a wonderful little wine shop! I went to their weekly free tasting today and tried 3 different whites and 3 reds. We had a couple that we liked and one of my friends bought a bottle of Argentinian wine. The ONLY disappointment I experienced was that we got way smaller pours than everybody else. I get that the others could have been regulars and they all looked 40+ (while we are in our twenties), but we're still new customers. Don't they want to grab our interest now and have us become loyal customers for many years to come? read more

Hmmm. Must be a hit-or-miss place. I thought the service was just fine, but wine selection did nothing for me. It was disjointed. I was with a friend who wanted big American reds - and there just wasn't any I could safely recommend in an everyday price range. How do you not have great reds for under $20 when you're a wine shop in WA state? Organization of the wine didn't make any sense to me either. This is my go-to wine store for Washington reds. Their selection is great, their prices are fair, and their recommendations are spot on. Haven't been here for a tasting but I hear they are fun. Become a member of their club for a decent discount. Overall I plan on being a local customer for years to come. That said I wouldn't come here looking for imports - I don't think this is the right place for funky varietals either. That stuff I continue to order online. read more

I have been a customer at the Ravenna store of McCarty and Schiering for close to 25 years. Whether I am dropping in to browse or I am on a serious mission to purchase specific wines the staff has always warmly welcomed me, helped educate me about my options, and I have never experienced any pressure to buy a high end bottle of wine. I feel very at home at the store. The wine selection is great with strong representation from all the major wine regions of the world, and the tastings at the counter most weekends is a great way to educate your palate. I encourage you to become a member of the store: for a nominal one time fee I have saved a lot of money on my purchases as I receive a discount on what I buy. I can't say I know a lot about wine, but to have the staff rub that in was a disappointment. I love good reds, have tasted some delicious Washington wines, and went in to purchase a decent wine for a Friday night at home with my sweetie. The staff member who helped me out was snooty and brusk. I asked for a recommendation and it was clear that she believed anyone in their right mind would only purchase a French wine. To a casual wine drinker, she was terrible at customer service. I'm sure they have a great selection of wines and that they know their stuff, but as a small business owner myself, I understand good customer service. They're not overly friendly, but I'm the type that gets pretty annoyed when someone is in my face as soon as I walk in a shop so...If you enjoy wine, I'd become a member. McCarthy & Schiering is a local hole in the wall wine shop that you would easily overlook and pass right by on your way down 65th if it wasn't for the gigantic wine bottles in the window. This respected local retailer isn't about making an impression with its storefront but instead with its wines. The selection isn't vast so if you're looking for warehouse type quantities then M & S is not your spot. But if you're hoping to find high quality over quantity then M & S is definitely for you. The wines available include several premium Washington producers and a mix of various California and Oregon wines, but their real strength lies in French wines. But if you're looking for something specific and can't find it on the shelf the staff is more than willing to track that down for you. Or, if you are hoping for a suggestion that's their specialty with each staff member well versed in the various wine regions on which they specialize. If you haven't visited the shop yet then there are two reasons why you should. One is their great buyer's club. Pay $100 and become a member for life, receiving a 15-17% discount (depending if you pay with credit or cash/check) on most every bottle of wine available, at either location. Some wines are already marked as low as they can go. Second, is their weekly Saturday tasting. Each Saturday M & S offers free tasting to visiting patrons, often poured by the winemaker themselves. Try the wine and if you like get a bottle autographed by the winemaker. These make for a great gift or topic of conversation around the dinner table. read more

As a nearby-neighbor, I had been buying wine at McCarthy & Schiering for 5 years. Their selection is fantastic, but their staff is outwardly rude. Through my many trips I've experienced everything from not being helped with a question while the sales people are chatting, to being told outright that I will have to wait to be rung up while they help customers with larger orders first. The discount lasts forever, and you're never loaded down with staff picks. If you want advice, however, the crew is extremely helpful. M&S was the first Washington wine shop I ever walked into when I found myself a sudden transplant to the Evergreen State three years ago. They sold me my first bottle of wine in the state (a nice Greco di Tufo, thanks for asking), and since then I've been to dozens of tastings, bought dozens of bottles for myself and others and stopped by out of the blue to ask for wine advice, well, dozens of times and not once have I ever been ignored, dismissed or talked down to. So, I'm surprised by the reviews that mention rudeness or unhelpfulness on the part of the staff; that hasn't been my experience at all. In every respect, except maybe size, this is an ideal store. It's one of the smaller spaces in the world of Seattle wine shops, so that means that there'll be some limits on selection, but they try to have a little something available from most everywhere. It's best not to go in with too rigid an idea of what you want to buy, but it's a great place to find that special, serendipitous bottle that you wouldn't have thought of without seeing. They use their space well, too, and the sheer number of bins and bottles gives the place that "real" wine shop feel. I've already shared my views on the helpfulness of the staff, but I'll add that their wine knowledge is off the charts. The smartest thing I've ever done there is to ask a simple question and then shut up and listen to them talk. And a final point about the staff: Several times I've come in to buy something for someone else (usually a birthday bottle for my partner) armed with no more than a general idea of what I wanted and a price point. Every time I've done that they've taken the time to ask me more questions and then steer me to what they thought was a solid bottle usually well below what I was willing to spend. What more could you want? As I mentioned, they've got great tastings as well as an informative newsletter. They're also a great hookup to special events and wine-related services (we found our wine storage place through their recommendation). The Buyers Club is also a fantastic deal for discounts. They don't really carry or cater to lower end stuff under $15.00 but there are other shops for that. When I want something I know to be vetted for quality I come here. The buyers apparently have my exact palate. Their private label stuff is off the hook for the price. I only buy elsewhere when I am cash deficient. read more
