First I need to start this complaint by stating that the only reason this company still has an A+ Rating by the Chicago BBB is because the Owners Know each other and are "GOOD FRIENDS". I won't say how I know this, but I will say that I have told my attorney about it and If something is not done soon to have this rating changed to what it should be,(F- in my opinion) that my retainer will be put to good use and will be money well spent.
Now Let me start with my complaint.
August of 2014 we contracted Window Works to complete a makeover of my home with all new windows (about 30) followed by new siding, facia, soffit, gutters and downspouts to the tune of $42,000.00 and some change. All due to leaky windows and damaged aluminum siding at the hands of age and mother nature.
From day one, the project was an absolute mess. After a miss by the company on the project start date and no communication from the company as to why, we finally get a call with a date for starting. After re routing our lives and schedules to accommodate this, the materials finally show up. Three things wrong with the delivery, 1. The crew shows up to start demolition and no Materials on site. We were told by the company that materials would be delivered the next day as the crew didn't need anything to start demo. 2. Day two, still no materials until half the work day is over. Finally materials show up. No windows present, only siding, facia, DOW board insulation, trim and all the supplies to install(nails tape etc.). The trim was the wrong color and the siding was the cheapest siding available with no double nail flange and blue line as we were promised and contracted( the siding screw up was not found until the siding was installed on half of the garage wall of my house and it was found by ME not the contractor). We were told the windows weren't ready yet. So now I have a house striped of its protection and open to the elements. That evening, it rained and my house got wet with no protection. I called the company, excuses is what I got. The company told the contractor to start installing the siding anyway without the windows as the windows would not be ready for a week, meanwhile the company told ME that the windows would be ready in a couple of days. Well that was a lie. I was assured that the siding could be done before the windows with no problems, by the company and the contractor(another lie). I made the contractor stop installing the siding and take the wrong material down. The company gave some push back and tried to tell us that the siding was correct until we proved them wrong with their own contract. Only then did they get the CORRECT siding and trim the right color.
3. After a week of phone calls that fell on deaf ears and two more storms that drenched my unfinished home, I once again called the company to tell them to get the windows here NOW because if my home got wet again they were going to have bigger problems. The company tells me that if I wanted the windows right then, that they needed to send the siding installers (still not done) to pick them up because they didn't have anyone else to do it and i'd have to wait another two days for windows. I told them to find someone and get the windows to my house because I was not allowing the siders to leave as the still had a half days work left to complete. Well, widows finally show up but not all 30 were present. Another nightmare to deal with, another string of phone calls, and more wasted time from work for my wife and I.
On top of all of this, my windows are going to be installed, AFTER my siding??? completely backwards from what we were told and how it is supposed to go. The windows get installed but they don't look right to me or my wife. They are installed flush with the inside of the opening instead of protruding the opening to the outside as windows should be, and I no longer have any widow sill on the inside of my house. That 3-4 inches is now on the outside of the window. It is now covered by aluminum coil and caulked around the outside. We asked the contractor why they were put in that way and why they used coil with nothing underneath it, and caulked the outside because we thought they would leak. The company assured us that they would not leak and that, "this is they way this type of project is done". Another lie! Who are we to know?
So what was the end result, you are wondering??? First rain storm after the install, we had three leaks all in different spots in the house, two of which were not an original reason for having the project done in the first place. The company was called, they came out and re- caulked they windows. Since then we've had numerous problems, numerous visits by the company and still have leaky windows that are causing irreversible damage to other parts of my home. Not to mention, there are probably a few leaks and more damage that we do not know about because there is no way to inspect those areas. Drywall and insula read more
