Date of visit: December 13, 2025…read more I love a good Mexican place, and as much as I enjoy Carlos's, it is good to have other options for when I go to visit my friend in the McHenry/Spring Grove area. The restaurant is very large with a variety of seating options including some interesting swings. I say interesting because it's really more of a novelty than anything; honestly, do you really want to have a seat that moves while you're eating chips with salsa? The menu is interesting, with a heavy focus on birria (think brisket, if you're unfamiliar) including in a dipped/fried taco as well as a grilled cheese sandwich, which is what I went with. While the meat in the sandwich was good, there was very little cheese to speak of, and that should be an important component of a grilled...cheese. However the chips and salsa were excellent, with some of the best chips I've had in quite some time, they really taste like more. In terms of the salsa, they are not lying with the "Diablo" in their name. If you are not a fan of spicy, stay away from the salsas as even the mild is fairly potent after a few chips. Also note that sour cream is available but doesn't tend to come WITH things by default, so be prepared to ask for that if it's a key part of your Mexican meals. Also disappointing, the tacos come with raw onions on top. This isn't mentioned on the menu, and was a very unwelcome addition to the dish. Service was a bit of a mixed bag; Jasmine was nice and attentive but struggled on some aspects, including telling us what the three salsas were when she brought them to the table, and saying that birria was a "biscuit," which thoroughly confused us. She asked if we wanted more chips and we declined, but then she brought more anyways.

The restaurant is in the heart of downtown McHenry and next to the river. I highly recommend sitting in the enclosed patio. It's spacious, full of tvs, and has a nice view of the river. You can tell based on the menu and confirmed by our server, burgers are their thing. All kinds including beef, bison, chicken, turkey, veggie and fish, some choices are an up charge. The burgers come with a side, some have an up charge. Our server mentioned everything is made in-house. I feel it's a rarity of restaurants to made their food in-house so it made me excited for the food. Everything is reasonably price. I opted for the BFM burger and pickle chips ($2 up charge). The burger was juicy and well cooked. Their burgers are 1/2 lbs so it was big. The pickle chips were crunchy and really good. Portion was huge and worth the up charge. My lunch partner chose Cajun fries and they were crispy and flavorful. Our server was great! She was so nice! One negative, they allow dogs and many people brought their dogs. Since the space is enclosed, I did not like all the dogs while I was eating. It was tricky leaving since the hostess stand is located in the tight entrance and there was a dog right in the doorway. My lunch companion is deathly allergic to dogs. Luckily this dog owner was considerate and moved their dog so we could pass. Other than all the dogs, we enjoyed our meal and would come again.

Made reservations an hour prior because we all loved this place and the atmosphere......walked in and was told to go look if my friend had been seated. Ok so that was rude but I went ahead and looked seeing as that she seemed busy. Eventually we were seated and it was nothing short of terrible. As the waitress whom I believed to be the owner took our drink order, my friends 4 year old son was told he took to long so she said "your done" and walked away! We all looked at each other in disbelief that a business owner could not only be so rude, but to a small child. What is that teaching him? We decided not to stay and to speak to the male owner who couldn't of cared less. Bottom line....don't support this place even as cute as it may look it's run by assholes read more

Love this place! Come with the kids for the train, stay for the deliciously creative menu! The Benedict Mess may have been stollen directly from a wonderful dream i had... And they have FRESH BAKED BREAD - just like mom made - even my 10 year old was impressed. I can't stress how good the food is. I wish we'd found this place years ago! We've really been missing out! The only flaw I could find was our waitress seemed grumpy and even though the dining room was almost empty we had a hard time getting her to pay any attention to us and she just really seemed totally over all of it. But it was minor, and who knows what she was going through that day so I'm still giving 5 stars. Can't wait to return and see what exciting delicious thing they serve up next! read more

The food was good. Nothing to brag about and honestly only a slight knotch above ihop. We went in October and the entire resturant was just crammed with decorations on top of their usual old country decor and characted/movie themed tables. We also had their spiked cider and it was also just good, nothing out of the ordinary but a nice treat. The service was extremely confusing. We must have arrived during a shift change because we literally had 3 different waitresses and we still didnt feel like we were being tended to. I like that its locally owned and has a lot of charm. So I decided to try it for lunch and am torn between 3-4 stars. I got the breaded veal diner/dinner type special, posted on the board behind the counter seating. $14. And it came with bean or cream of potato soup. The veal was not a whole piece of veal but a ground concoction that seemed like something from the grocery frozen food section. Not awful but not awesome. Then again this is a little diner so should I expect chef food? It is called Little Chef. Undecided. It was served hot and crisp which was good because the gravy and mashed taters were definitely overwhelming the texture and flavor of the meal. The gravy was ok but a little different taste than any gravy I've ever had. Definitely not homemade and was very strong flavored. I think if it had some beans or a small salad included with this would have been happier. I got hot tea which was a challenge as the water spilled all over from the tea pot and I was told to put my hand on the top to avoid that, but then your finger got a little bit of burn from the hot metal. The soup was good and I took it home. The service was fine, absolutely no issues there and since it wasn't too busy, as expected. I know everyone's prices everywhere have gone up, but I just can't justify what I paid for what I got. Food came out at 10:10- 40 minutes is way too long. We left at 10:41. Other local breakfast spots, we are usually in and out with 40 minutes on the outside. First, take names. We came in and the greeter said I will remember, but she was also busing tables so when a table opened up another employee had to ask who was next. Seems like employees have multiple jobs but they do not have a rhythm and more importantly they are not working effectively. There also seems to be no sign of management or the owner. As a new business, be present, check in, greet your customers and if you need to be someplace else designate someone on your behalf. People are much more forgiving when they have a face and are personally welcomed. State your issues before someone complains, like the two table near us. Example: "Welcome, we are so happy to have you. I am owner/manager. We are running a little slow in the kitchen we are still in our infancy stage but we hope you enjoy your meal. Please let me know if you need anything." There was nothing special or unique about the food or service that would make me say you have to try the Lakemoor Diner. Good, solid breakfast restaurants are needed in this area so I hope they work out their kinks. With how long the wait was between sitting and being served they needed to have soft music in the background. Not only were other customers visibly frustrated, but we could hear conversations and complaints. It became uncomfortably quiet at times. As we walked out, they had many people waiting and as they looked around they saw a lot of empty tables with dishes. Finished plates sat in front of customers with no one clearing or checking in if everything was ok, but there was a lot of staff walking around seemingly without purpose. I'd give a 1 if they were not brand new, but I'll give a 3 based on the food being served hot and the staff was very nice.
