How do you mess up pancakes?! They tasted sour and were barely warm. No powdered sugar, nothing to spruce up the platter. Green street cafe is a place that I have grown up at. This place is a classic in the town of McHenry. Back in the day there use to be many shops in the back of the cafe. Local boutiques and gift shops. Now it's kind of a ghost town but cafe is still thriving. Going into the green street cafe. The secret is the back lot for parking. Great when the downtown gets busy and there isn't a lot of parking in the street. Then when you walk in through the back. You will reach the double door and be greeted with their great service. This is a place my grandmother loved going too. This is a place that would take care of what ever you needed while brining out great food. Service is always great and they make you feel like home. Consistency is the key for cafe. Their food is exactly that. My favorite dish is their home made chicken fingers and fries. Also they have the BEST ranch. This is a dish that I use to get as a kid and I still get as an adult. Also breakfast is something else that I have enjoyed for years. For me I love 2 eggs,2 sausage and 2 pancakes. This place doesn't have the flashiest curb appeal, but the food was great. We went on a week day for brunch and thought it was delicious. This restaurant is your basic 3 meals a day restaurant with a comfy feel, great food and the best service around! The prices are reasonable, but I would pay twice the price for their delicious biscuits and gravy! The menu has many original breakfast choices, lunch, and dinner. So before I begin my review, I just want to say that the young man that seated and us and our waitress, Sue, were extremely friendly and my review should reflect badly against them in any way. First of all, the coffee is horrible. My daughters coffee literally looked like it had a dollop of grease floating at the top of her cup. It was so busy which is so nice to see local small business again thriving. This restaurant was definitely understaffed which is the sign of the times we live in under this current administration. Let's get to the food bcz that's where my 1 star rating comes from. Powdered eggs. My overly priced (what isn't overly priced these days?) corned beef hash patty was burnt on the outside and half raw on the inside. Whoever is cooking back there is cooking either with too much grease or on a very dirty cooking surface-OR BOTH!!! Even the water that we were served tasted horrible!!! Unfortunately we will not be going back there again. I love supporting local small businesses but I'm not going to support a business cooking bad food. Sorry but there's little ways to make your experience worthwhile-- providing the patrons with a good rich cup of coffee, and instead of using powdered eggs, use farm fresh local eggs!! God only knows we have several in the area that these restaurants can take advantage of. Ew. I got Chorizo Benedict for something different on the classic. Why. How. Hollandaise sauce is butter and lemon. Period. This was straight up cream of flour!! Totally wrecked everything! We used to love this place but it has gone "downhill" in that they now have video slot machines which are so loud and the last thing you want to hear while you're trying to enjoy a meal. Also, the service was slow, our server and the lady who takes the payments didn't ask us once how our food/experience was, which in my opinion is "service 101!" When we finally got our food, it was overcooked and just awful. Since our waitress didn't come by to ask us how it was and considering how long it took to get our food, I didn't even bother sending it back to have them remake it. Also, one of the sides we ordered didn't come until we were almost done with our meal. This used to be one of our favorites places to eat, but we will not be going back anytime soon! read more

Been here many times since living in McHenry, over 20 years. They are known for their broccoli and cheddar soup, which is still fantastic. I had the fish fry last week, and I am not a huge fish fan, but I must say theirs was one of the BEST around. This is why: I had the cod, and it was a piece that took up most of a dinner sized plate. The breading was tasty, but light, not the deep fried ones with those air pockets in them that contain just air, and no fish! You know what I'm talking about! Comes with soup or salad, and vegetables on the side of the entrée. The waitress was attentive, but a bit too casual. She was sarcastic, which is fine, since I am too, but there's a time when that's not appreciated in a restaurant. Owner/lady who took our checks had the personality of a shoe. read more

I've lived in McHenry for over 21 years, and Green Street Café has always been here. It's a lovely little diner nook my family and I enjoy to go to. I wouldn't say their food is top-notch, but it's decent and I've never had an issue. My favorite is always their creamy cheese and broccoli soup. They'll bring out the typical diner basket filled with crackers and bread - It reminds me of being a kid and always filling up on the delicious cracker sticks with butter. went here for the first time yesterday for lunch. it was not crowded at all ! the place was a nice size , seemed clean , and the owners were very nice as well. we got the broccoli soup and it was good just a little to creamy for my taste ! but the fresh cheddar cheese on top was nice! the grilled chicken was good as well and they brought warm bread which was very nice too ! the server seemed new and young and he forgot some of the stuff we wanted but was very nice. we would come back but not go out of our way . read more

It is similar to any sit down diner you can find anywhere. Food is okay, selection is all over the place on what you can order, and the service is similar to a restaurant that is open all night. When we went in there was no one there, that should have been our first sign that things were not so great, but we stuck it out. Went for a family function. We did have the party room but one of the workers was eating in there while we had our gathering. The food was average but proportions were good. Only one waitress for over 20 people was not good and slow to get food out. Pancakes my son had were good, potato pancakes were very oily.
