Green street cafe is a place that I have grown up at. This place is a classic in the town of McHenry. Back in the day there use to be many shops in the back of the cafe. Local boutiques and gift shops. Now it's kind of a ghost town but cafe is still thriving. Going into the green street cafe. The secret is the back lot for parking. Great when the downtown gets busy and there isn't a lot of parking in the street. Then when you walk in through the back. You will reach the double door and be greeted with their great service. This is a place my grandmother loved going too. This is a place that would take care of what ever you needed while brining out great food. Service is always great and they make you feel like home. Consistency is the key for cafe. Their food is exactly that. My favorite dish is their home made chicken fingers and fries. Also they have the BEST ranch. This is a dish that I use to get as a kid and I still get as an adult. Also breakfast is something else that I have enjoyed for years. For me I love 2 eggs,2 sausage and 2 pancakes. A breakfast for champions. My grandparents are biscuits and gravy, BLT club triple decker and mediterranean chicken.

This place doesn't have the flashiest curb appeal, but the food was great. We went on a week day for brunch and thought it was delicious. It's definitely a place that has typical diner food, and isn't flashy or r modern like a lot of the new restaurants are. If you want solid breakfast, I'd recommend!

    Huge for a 1/2 salad.

Menu is jammed packed full of food. Typical little diner with a lot of food choices. Clean restaurant. All the staff was friendly and on top of everything. Food came out fast. Salads are huge. Good portion of food for the price.

It happened to be closed despite the hours saying it was open. But I've always enjoyed my food and service here.

So I decided to try it for lunch and am torn between 3-4 stars. I got the breaded veal diner/dinner type special, posted on the board behind the counter seating. $14. And it came with bean or cream of potato soup. The veal was not a whole piece of veal but a ground concoction that seemed like something from the grocery frozen food section. Not awful but not awesome. Then again this is a little diner so should I expect chef food? It is called Little Chef. Undecided. It was served hot and crisp which was good because the gravy and mashed taters were definitely overwhelming the texture and flavor of the meal. The gravy was ok but a little different taste than any gravy I've ever had. Definitely not homemade and was very strong flavored. I think if it had some beans or a small salad included with this would have been happier. I got hot tea which was a challenge as the water spilled all over from the tea pot and I was told to put my hand on the top to avoid that, but then your finger got a little bit of burn from the hot metal. The soup was good and I took it home. The service was fine, absolutely no issues there and since it wasn't too busy, as expected. I know everyone's prices everywhere have gone up, but I just can't justify what I paid for what I got. Again not sure what expectations should be in this economy or where to put the extra minus star for the state of restaurants and value, but this was just a bit under expectations.

I'm glad we didn't skip this place based on the Yelp reviews. The restaurant is in the heart of downtown McHenry and next to the river. I highly recommend sitting in the enclosed patio. It's spacious, full of tvs, and has a nice view of the river. You can tell based on the menu and confirmed by our server, burgers are their thing. All kinds including beef, bison, chicken, turkey, veggie and fish, some choices are an up charge. The burgers come with a side, some have an up charge. Our server mentioned everything is made in-house. I feel it's a rarity of restaurants to made their food in-house so it made me excited for the food. Everything is reasonably price. I opted for the BFM burger and pickle chips ($2 up charge). The burger was juicy and well cooked. Their burgers are 1/2 lbs so it was big. The pickle chips were crunchy and really good. Portion was huge and worth the up charge. My lunch partner chose Cajun fries and they were crispy and flavorful. Our server was great! She was so nice! One negative, they allow dogs and many people brought their dogs. Since the space is enclosed, I did not like all the dogs while I was eating. It was tricky leaving since the hostess stand is located in the tight entrance and there was a dog right in the doorway. My lunch companion is deathly allergic to dogs. Luckily this dog owner was considerate and moved their dog so we could pass. Other than all the dogs, we enjoyed our meal and would come again.
