Pork gyro to go plate only on tuesdays

Was going in to try the fair prices out. Have found the best gyro ive ever had. With a nice setting outside seating. Great service from the window to outside with a nice laid back inside!!

Great little Greek inspired restaurant right on Main Street McHenry. Quaint inside seating with a bar and high top tables with TV's going to watch sports/Olympics. True gem is the outdoor seating in a small alley next door. Gentle breezes flow though and the ambience is casual and comfortable. I ate the Gyro platter and my guests had the Souvlaki sandwich. Sandwiches were very good and my guests loved them. The Gyro meat was season well and cooked perfectly. Pita, onions and tomatoes were all fresh and flavorful. Thin cut fries were cooked as they should be. Tried the Feta Philo Meti and Loucanico appetizers. Feta was wonderful and a great twist on fried mozzarella. The Loucanico (sausage with pita) was a bit over cooked but that could have been a one off with the grill being too hot and it getting away from the staff. Interesting flavor profile as I sensed what I thought might be carroway seed in the sausage but not sure. I'll be back to try the kabobs and the Souvlaki for myself. Baklava desert and Baklava Cheesecake desert was well received by the table. Well done. Definitely worth a try. Great staff and very attentive.

The chicken was super tasty and I loved the block of feta. Although, for 15.00, I could get double the salad and chicken and get pita bread at another local Greek restaurant. I would suggest adding more to the salad for the price of 16.50. I will try something different next time but I think my husband will stick with the Gyro dinner and we will just ask for more sauce and pita bread.

More of a "hole in the wall" diner....but you could smell the food just walking through the door! The girl working the counter was most accommodating and friendly! Came for the creamy lemon rice soup and wasn't disappointed!! Delish!! Couldn't decide on entree so I opted for the $17.00 plate with pork skewer and taziki (sp) sauce soup and spinach pie! Was looking forward to trying their Pastitsio but they were out of it. Spinach pie was a very good second choice! Only downside was no liquor license and we didn't think to ask if we could byob.... They served fountain drinks and nice jugs of cold water ....one infused with cucumbers which was a nice touch. All in all very good food and way more affordable than a fancy Greek (or Mediterranean ) restaurant. Didn't have room for dessert. But looked like some nice offerings. I would go back...even if it were just for the soup!

Since there was a total of 11 and the seating is first come first serve, we decided to call to see if they had reservations. They did take our name and reserved a table. When we arrived we noticed a table was reserved and we were informed that it was our table. We sat and looked over the menus. When we were ready my 2 boys and I went up to place our order. My one son has major allergies so we spoke to the chef and he came back out to recommend the dishes he can have. It was great that he did so and gave us confidence that my son would be able to eat without worrying too much about the ingredients. I ordered the Shrimp Kalamakia with a side of the Greek Rice. My son with the allergies ordered the Pork Kalamakia with Greek Rice and no pita, my other son ordered the Traditional Pork Gyro with Greek Rice. The sides we ordered: Saganaki Fritters and Spanakopitakia. My son that ordered the Pork Kalamakia devoured it. He said it was tender and juicy and probably could have eaten 4 skewers. My Shrimp Kalamakia was nicely charred and seasoned, I squeezed some lemon and it provided a nice tang over the seasoning. The Lemon rice pilaf was soft and cook just right and was nicely balanced. I had one Saganaki Ball and it was delicious. My son had the Pork Gyros said it was really good and the Tzatziki sauce was creamy and rich with flavors. My in-laws bought the table desserts and I got the Baklava and my wife got Loukoumades (Greek Donuts with Nutella) and both did not disappoint. I really loved the citrus honey syrup in the Baklava. The Loukoumades had a crispy shell and nice a fluffy on the inside and the Nutella amount was perfect. This place is very good and well worth the price in my opinion. I loved the fact that they took the time to make sure my son with allergies was safe.

It's a nice big space, it definitely feels old but it's clean enough. Pretty decent menu. They offer the usual Greek style options as well as your typical American fare. Order at the counter and grab your food there as well. Self service but with no tipping pressure... I appreciate that, so many places asking for tips without any service these days but not here. Bonus points for using an actual spit to cook the gyros, it's how it should be and we love to see it. I ordered the gyro plate and a spinach Pie. It all came out pretty quick and I've got to say, not bad at all. The gyros are sliced perfectly, giving each bite the right balance of crispy and tender. They load on the sauce, and it's pretty good. It's a strong flavor so I might have liked it on the side more honestly. The tomatoes were just sad, seemed like not the best quality so I ate around them. The pita was okay, I've had worse at similar places but I've had better too. Fries were surprisingly good! I like this type of crunchy battered fry. I'd definitely grab these again. The Spinach Pie was a bit spinach heavy for my taste, I like a heavier cheese balance personally. That said it was prepared just right and I finished it all anyway. It's listed as a side but it could be a main dish with its portion size. Good thing I was hungry! Price point wise, It felt a bit high. Maybe that's why my old favorite place went out of business though. This was a pretty good meal, and I see some friends recommending other things here so I'll for sure be back to try the chicken and potatoes. Side note: they have "gaming" if thats your thing. It's got its own side room for everyone's convenience.

When they put the sign up I was so intrigued as to what B&B would be. Much to my delight it was Greek American style! I grew up eating along this specific fault line of American favorites and Greek classics, so I was psyched to see something like that around here. As soon as I saw they were open I had to stop in. They nailed it here. The clean diner concept was friendly and comfortable. The family run business was putting out, for my money, the best gyros anywhere around! Spinach Pie, another classic and another must have. I got one almost every visit. They did a great job with American stuff, and even a few Mexican style dishes too! I'd get the taco meal a lot actually, it was a great hearty meal. The Greek chicken plates and the lemon chicken soup were some of the best here, these guys knew their way around a chicken! There's plenty more I could say, it's been about 3 years after all... this is a big loss on the community. Nothing hits quite like this spot, it had become a go-to for me. Can't decided what to eat today? Go to B&B. Multiple people in the group want different types of food? Go to B&B. Craving something light? Go to B&B. Need a hearty dinner? Go to B&B. Well, now I can't go to B&B anymore. The area is less inviting without them, it's left a massive hole here that likely won't be filled. Trying to buck up... I'm wishing the family all the best moving forward! They are still running their Facebook page for the business, with a post saying they will have more information soon. Whatever they plan, I hope to be eating their food somewhere not to far from here in the near future. Goodbye for now, hopefully not sayonara. And thanks for the good times!

He suggested we take a seat at a table and he would take our order when ready. He was very kind and polite! We ordered the chicken gyros on a plate which was absolutely delicious. Menu states that it's hand carved which I'm not sure if that means it's still spit roasted or not but it was different than the typical chicken gyros I've had at other places. This looked and tasted like actual chicken rather than pressed meat so as a health conscious person, I loved this! The chicken was tender & juicy. It came with Greek potatoes and rice that had a delicious (lemony) gravy on top along with a soft, warm pita. The 2nd meal we ordered was the pastichio dinner. I've never had pastichio before so I wasn't sure what to expect. It's basically baked pasta (like a ziti noodle), ground meat & cheese casserole topped with bechamel sauce. Like the chicken gyros, it came with the same potatoes and rice but this dinner also came with soup or salad. I chose the avgolemono soup because it's my favorite. It's basically a creamy rice, egg & chicken soup with lemon! I'm a bit picky when it comes to the temperature of soup as I believe it should be hot. It wasn't scorching hot but it was definitely the right temperature of hot. I have nothing negative to say about our experience tonight. The service was outstanding. The food was delicious. Portions and prices were just right. Actually, with the cost increase of dining out these days, Ambrosia is very reasonable. The decor gave you the feeling of fun & casual dining in a Greek atmosphere. The restaurant was very clean, including the bathrooms! My only regret is not having been there sooner. I've lived in the next town over for over 2 decades and never knew Ambrosia was there. It doesn't help that there isn't a big sign displaying all the businesses in that strip mall either. I actually stumbled upon the place on Yelp when I did a search for Greek cuisine. Most of the local "Mediterranean" restaurants and chains will carry some Greek items but not like Ambrosia. When I actually see lamb on a menu, I know it's authentic Greek cuisine. Speaking of lamb, I want to try their of leg of lamb dinner! There are so many more things I'd like to try. I can't wait to go back!
