Stopped by Winchell's on Saturday night in Lexington wow what a busy place, we started at the bar with quick, friendly service. Annette served us ice cold draft beers, I had two local Craft beers and two appetizers fried mushrooms and special flatbread Brussel sprouts, mushroom & blue cheese. We had to wait 30 minutes for a table, once we were seated Will took care of us. My parents & I enjoyed fried shrimp with Mac & cheese and cole slaw; Dad had fried chicken with green beans & mashed potatoes and I ordered Kentucky hot brown with turkey only & it was huge. So good! I've been a few time. I love the hot brown and the bread pudding. For this review, Rachel was out waitress. Y'all were swamped got the UK vs TN game. She was very nice and as quick as she could be tending to a lot of tables. As always the food was amazing! All the employees are very kind. The hostess was very nice. I stopped in here for the first time with four buddies at 10:00 on a Saturday morning. The place was packed but the wait was short. Our server was very fast and efficient. I had the Sausage and Pepper Jack Omelet with home fries and jalapeño cheese grits. My plate was massive. The omelet was amazing. The others guys had Hot Chicken Stack, which apparently was really spicy (noted!), the French Toast (which was good but not amazing apparently), the Breakfast Sampler (he ate it all!) and the Ham and Swiss Omelet (again, really good). We were impressed with how quickly we were seated and how great the service was even with the big crowd. My only letdown was that my half/half tea was pretty bitter. First time dining here. Did a search and the reviews were very good. When we pulled up to the restaurant, we didn't have a good feeling, but once we stepped inside everything was amazing. Nikki was over the top, as our server. The food was also very good. Typically, I don't order steak when eating out, because I think I can do better on the grill, but the Ribeye was at least as good as I do, or better. Next time we are in Lexington, we will definitely stop in again. read more

I finally got around to posting this review. I thought I had already posted this but apparently never saved it. I was here back in June of 2017. Came for dinner and ordered steak meals with fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. Everything was delicious and they had some great music playing in the background. First time for breakfast...best I've had in a while. Eggs came out as ordered and toast was toasted (not warmed). Lot of food. Home fried potatoes and country ham are delicious. Husband ordered biscuits and gravy..biscuits were a little overdone but gravy was very good. Will come back again for breakfast!! read more

I had a good dine in experience. One coworker from past suggested the tenders and I figured I would order chicken wings (because I love chicken wings....no one suggested them); the tenders were good. I would compare them to a better version of Raising Canes. Mac & Cheese and coleslaw were good as well. The server was very attentive. I asked her to prepare a martini and the hot wings (to go). For risk that these wings were way spicier than anticipated, I felt I should be eating them in the comfort in my own home. Edit: OMG! The wings are spicier than hell. The minute I started chewing the first one, and if I could metaphorically compare it to accelerating a sports car; it is as if someone from standstill just presses the gas to the floor and does not let up. The heat comes on quick and after about the third wing nose was running, sounds with the tongue out were occurring, and sweat was dripping. Glad I had some milk in a cup and I drank some before eating these things. Good call on the to go. Feel like these are comparable to buffalo wild wings blazing. This is a must place to go if you were going to be in the Southland Lexington area. The food is slightly above average, but it's nothing out of this world. The best part of this place is the ambience and the overall area that it is in the service is relatively good, and everyone is usually very friendly but their prices can be a little bit high for what you're getting. read more

This was our first time here, and I can't say enough great things about our experience. Our waitress was so happy it was our first time there, and couldn't wait to tell us what things they were known for. The hot brown was easily the best hot brown I had. To say we had leftovers would be greatly underselling. She said they had "large portions", and I just viewed that as a challenge. They won. Winchell's is a local legend for anyone that's lived in Lexington for the past 20 years, and well worth visiting if you're new to the area. Definitely check them out for breakfast, especially with a morning cocktail or bloody mary. Their jalapeno grits & breakfast trout (almond crusted trout & eggs) will make you wonder why you've never considered fish for breakfast before, and coupled with bacon & hashbrowns really hits the spot. While it's set up like a sports bar, it has enough seating to be cozy enough for a date, and a few sparse patio chairs outside for smokers. Don't be fooled, Winchell's is a greasy spoon. A southern-fried, greasy spoon. I like the home cooking style lunch and dinner (a great place to get a hot brown) BUT what I love is Winchell's breakfast. Most of the time, I am too busy or too lazy to climb out of bed in time to get breakfast at Winchells. However, on those rare occasions, when I can make it I get pretty excited. My friend loves the eggs Benedict, but for me it's all about the almond joy pancakes and jalepeno cheese grits. Imagine, if you will, a pancake full of coconut, almonds and chocolate. Many people will add syrup to this and those people are wrong. All this pancake needs is butter to make it completely unhealthy and completely wonderful. With it, you get two sides. I happen to love everything bacon so naturally, there is the side of crispy bacon. AND then there is the cheese grits. I will tell you, I do not like grits. Grits are gross...unless they are cheesy and spicy and made with jalapenos and love at Winchell's. Sundays are busy days to go since the farmers market is located right outside. Driving down Southland Ave, it would be easy to pass by Winchells- but in doing so, you'd be missing out on a real gem of a restaurant. Well known in Lex for its southern-cooking-comfort-food Winchells is great at what they do. This past weekend I went for brunch. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and delicious, but the jalapeño cheddar cheese grits took the cake. I've heard the blue & white pancakes get rave reviews so I plan on trying those next time. Even though our server was busy, she always made sure our waters & coffee were full, and checked in on us frequently. Winchells is just as great for a casual lunch as it is for a UK game or Sunday brunch. Definitely worth each visit! read more

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how good our meal was and how friendly they were. My husband and I started with some chili. It has a bit of a kick and quite good. We each had the Hot Brown which was absolutely delicious here! Better than a lot of others! And we finished off with dessert of Kentucky Pie. Our waitress was new but she did great and made sure we had everything we needed. One nice thing to add was all the employees personally said Bye and Thanks as we walked out. Nice place! read more

Tucked in the heart of the quaint Southland neighborhood, Winchell's is a true Lexington treasure. We have never had a bad meal - breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner are all outstanding! The there is wide ranging menu variety and from salmon to breakfast burritos we have tried it all. My better half, who fancies himself a wing connoisseur, says the sauces at Winchells are the best in LEX. The hot brown is awesome - the mornay sauce is delicious. Very strange how late breakfast only runs, definitely something to know when having a long wait, that you won't be able to get anything else. Even weirder is that nothing is served at 12:30, as they end breakfast! No food between 12:30-1, even if at a table! However, the waitress we had was quite nice.it was frustrating for couple of us, since we'd waited and couldn't order what we came for. In town from Buffalo New York, visiting with my family. They, my son and daughter in law, stop here all the time. And now I know why. Great service. Great homey feel. Food is incredible. This is a great locally owned sports bar. Went there on a Sunday and there were multiple TVs showing every NFL game. Staff were awesome despite it being packed. It was too cold to sit outside but they have TVs in the windows so you can still catch the game on nice days. Food: ordered wings, quesadilla and Winchells brother sandwich. Everything was delicious and portions were huge. the food was really rich and heavy so ladies wear your stretchy pants :) Will be back especially on game days! read more

I've been a customer for many years (30+) and the Reuben was always my favorite, the best in town. Last week I got a Reuben with 30% corned beef and 70% sauerkraut. I do realize that times are tough for the restaurant industry and you have to manage costs closely to maintain your margins (and keep your great staff) but maybe increasing prices and decreasing quality equals less customers .
