There are a number of other things that I want to get here but I usually can't pass up the Winchell's Brothers sandwich, it is the perfect blend of flavors with the sweet slaw and the salty fries and meat. I really love it just the way it comes! I also enjoy the Fried Bologna Sandwich and the Country Ham and Swiss Melt. I really want to try their Nashville Hot Chicken and I haven't had their Philly Cheesesteak in a long time. My biggest complaint is that on the weekends they don't start serving lunch until at least 1:00 and there is no set time when they stop serving breakfast and switch over to lunch. Another thing that I will warn you about is that their prices have gotten very high. Most of their sandwiches are now almost $20. read more

Had been here for breakfast before and loved it. We were in town last night and decided to hit up Winchell's for dinner. I loved it. Staff was super friendly and accommodating. It was easy to find parking and it was not a long wait for a table. Love the sports decor especially the movie posters. We started with the fried mushrooms and they were fantastic. Love how thin the breading is. It's almost like a tempura batter. The creamy horseradish it comes with is bomb. I had the grilled bbq pork chop and woah was it good. Cut like butter. Had great bbq flavor. Was nice and THICC. The Mac and cheese as a side was mid but I didn't even care because of how good the pork chop was. Went to breakfast here twice, a week apart. Food and service are OK but not great. I ordered the breakfast sandwich, unfortunately, on white bread. The bread disintegrated and I was left with a pile of "stuff" on my plate. After a week there was still no soap in the lady's room and the hand dryer was broken. A chill sports bar/restaurant. The drinks are okay but the food's pretty good. The caramel appletini was very much apple and caramel. That's the best way I could describe it lol. I got the fried chicken dinner and it was super fresh and crispy. Planets of chicken too, you can lowkey share. Mac and cheese was pretty good, but the highlight was the broccoli honestly. I don't even like vegetables like that, but the broccoli was cooked to perfection. I also got some banana pudding to go which was pretty good as far as banana puddings go. This is a classic southern food spot. I probably wouldn't choose to return on my own, its not exactly my scene but I wouldn't mind returning with some other people. read more

This is the first place we went to on our trip to Lexington and we were so glad we stopped in cause we were excited to try a Kentucky Hot Brown and this came up when we did a search. It's an unassuming place in a strip mall. Plenty of free parking. Walked in on a Saturday at brunch time only to discover they were only serving brunch! Wah! We wanted hot browns. Asked our delightful Gal if it was possible and she went to check for us, returning to say since they weren't too busy they would make them for us. Score! I ordered the smaller one, while Husband got the regular one. Let me just say I do believe we could have shared just the "smaller" one. They are so very rich, so very big and so very good! Stopped here after visiting Lake Cumberland on the way back to New York and had the best Fried chicken I've ever had, 5 years later I'm still thinking about it. This is definitely a place I'd drive past. If it wasn't for Yelp reviews, I never would've stopped here as the location and exterior is not attractive. I'm happy we gave this place a try though! The theme is definitely inconsistent and confusing. The interior looked very "lake side diner" and the Christmas lights cheapened the atmosphere. However, our waitress was very friendly and the food was hot and fresh! Probably one of the best Philly cheesesteaks I've ever had! The bread was perfectly toasted so it didn't get soggy but wasn't so crunchy that it'd tear your mouth up. The fish and chips were hot and tasty and the cole slaw tasted fresh! The portions are a good size! I feel rebranding would be very beneficial for this place. "Winchells Sports Bar" really does a disservice to the fresh food inside. read more

We had dinner at Winchells. The restaurant is down home southern food, seems fresh and much of it is locally sourced. It has the feel of a mom and pop diner, but much larger. The customers seemed liked locals. There are numerous mounted TVs and a bar. The food was really good and well seasoned. I had the fried cat fish, green beans and mac and cheese. The fish was well prepared and the green beans were delicious. The mac and cheese was soft and creamy but not that flavorful. My husband had the fried oysters, broccoli and baked sweet potato. All were pretty good. Although the restaurant is southern styled, they will prepare the meat grilled or blackened, if desired. The dessert menu is expansive, but we didn't order any. The server, Emily was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. A very nice experience, tasty food, good service. If you are looking for a "home cooked" meal, this is the place. I eat here once every few months. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd eat here often. The food is always fresh and good. Prices are reasonable. The staff is pleasant. Just a good old fashioned neighborhood feel to the place. I like that. I finally tried their fried chicken on Saturday night and it was perfect. Hot, crispy, juicy, flavorful. We love this place! We were looking for breakfast but arrived a little late and didn't get breakfast. I am a huge fan of their shrimp and grits and that worked for brunch for me! This is a bar vibe, several good beers on tap and that is always a plus. The shrimp and grits have wonderful tender bright flavored shrimp. The grits are well cooked not hard or mushy to Goldilocks this would be "just right". There are peppers and onions that gave their all for this dish. Our service was quick and friendly. Went to watch a football game and grab some dinner at 7:00 p.m. on a Saturday. We asked the hostess if we could see the game we were looking for and before we were seated, the manager (we assume) was asking which game and what channel and making sure we had at least one screen to see our game. Stopped in for brunch. They are having the roof redone so it looked like it might be closed due to big crane out front. It was open. We were seated quickly and our server was Ryan. The noise was nonstop from the roof being redone. We got pancakes,eggs, hashbrowns, sausage,biscuits and bacon between us. Everything was very tasty and cooked as we ordered. The restaurant has a very casual ambience with a slight touch of sports bar vibes. The restaurant has a lot of TVs throughout the establishment displaying sports as well. Service was incredibly fast; time from having my order taken to bringing out the food took around 15-20 minutes total. I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich with fries for my meal, it was a solid sandwich! There was a healthy amount of chicken between the buns, and the fries had a slight crunch and soft interior. Overall, I only gave this place 4 stars because I believe the restaurant has a very strong local following. I have been recommended the restaurant multiple times by locals, however my impression is that the food is typical and not any more special than of any diner/casual restaurant that you can find in most cities. The servers were very attentive and we were quickly seated. The restaurant is large and comfortable. We had huge breakfast portions and took half home for next day's breakfast. I had the special which was a 4egg omelette with fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella with a balsamic drizzle. It was really good! The biscuits and gravy were tasty and slightly spicy due to the sausage in the gravy. If you're not a big eater, just ask for a to-go box as soon as they bring out the food. I stopped in today for the navy bean soup and cornbread and it was very good. The problem was I also had cottage cheese with a tomato. I knew the cottage cheese was $3.99 but no where did it say 1 slice of tomato, and I mean 1 slice, was an additional $3.99!! So 1/2 cup cottage cheese and 1 slice of a tomato was $7.98!! So I went here to try their hot brown. They have a small for 1599 and a large for 1999 of course I got the large. I like the ham it was southern style very salty and the turkey was good quality as well. The rouex was very good. Had a great texture in decent flavor. They also melted some cheddar on top. One thing I didn't really like though is they put the tomato and great at Parmesan on the top after cooking it and did not cook them I like it better when they melt that cheese and maybe broil the tomatoes a little bit too. Also, the bacon was a little chewy did not have enough fat in it maybe I like it so much better when the bacon melts in your mouth, . If this review is just on the hot brown they would've got four stars however, my friend ordered the fish and we were charged a little bit more maybe a dollar than it said on the menu I never like to see that and it was just one piece of fish that was $22. She said the batter was kind of better. The fish was white and flaky with it. She got brussels sprouts and she said they were pretty bad number one they were seasoned with ham and some other weird seasonings stuff. She said she's never had on brussels sprouts and she did not enjoy them at all. She also got mac & cheese, which I would've asked for taste, but I was pretty busy with that hot brown. She said while creamy it had almost no cheese flavor. I also don't like that they are Pepsi products but what can you do? This place is in a strip mall. It gets busy when KU is playing a home basketball game, which we didn't know, but got there just before the game crowd. Atmosphere was a mix of, after work friends, family having a bday party, and UK fan regulars, and folks on dates, or just out for dinner. I got the chili and the wings. Richelle got the potato soup and a side salad. We both enjoyed our soups, chili did have a tiny touch of heat, not a complicated spice palate but a nice chili. A sport bar tucked away in a long strip shopping center, Winchell's is very spacious with three large dining areas plus their long double bar area. We stopped in for a Friday lunch and were seated immediately. Our area had at least six viewable screens with various sports in progress or sports talk shows. After some debate, she went with the Catfish Sandwich and I opted for the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. She went with the fries and I stayed with the homemade potato chips. Those chips were excellent. A tad thicker than Lays but an expected thickness for a homemade chip. Plus no grease detected anywhere; kudos. She marveled at how good her catfish was and her apprehension of it tasting too "fishy" dissipated. My Philly sandwich was great. The meat was of a higher quality than most sandwiches of the same name. There was a horseradish sauce in the description that I asked not to be included and it was fine without it. A return visit is on our menu so I'm saving this to my Lexington Collection. read more

I stopped by due to the local papers biscuits and gravy recommendation, which I ordered along with a side of home fries. The home fries were over salted and had the texture of over cooked french fries! The biscuits had good favor but were also over cooked and crunchy. The gravy was good but the portion sizes reminded me of when I ordered biscuits and gravy at Denny's in Minnesota, which was just enough gravy to make a biscuit/gravy sandwich.
