I love that this place is so laid back!!! It's a nice cozy spot nestled inside of Southland drives shopping centers. Very comfy and inviting for all occasions! They play all kinds of music!!! That's always a major plus with me!!! The waiter I had was superb!!! He got my drink order ready and then appetizers right on time! He always anticipated my need for a refill. My food was amazing!!! This was my first time here and I had heard great things so I decided I would experience for myself today. I ordered the pork chops dinner, with mashed potatoes and gravy!!! It's rare these days that you find a restaurant that actually serves REAL mp. So when I got my plate I could taste the magnificence!! The pork chops were fried Golden Brown to perfection!!! There were so many things to choose from I almost couldn't pick! But I will for sure return!!! read more

Great local sports bar with a breakfast to boot. Friendly, quick and quality. Highly recommended

So loud you couldn't have a conversation. Ordered a BLT. Asked if I wanted mayo (standard part of BLT). Waitress brings a couple of packets of mayo and sets them on the table. So I have to make my own sandwich? OK. Burned bacon. Sourdough "toast" that wasn't toasted. And full service prices. Definitely won't return. read more

Alvaro and Tom are amazing. I've yet to find a mistake while sitting at the bar. Add Jeff and Parker-can't hardly beat it. read more

Loved in Lexington for 30 years and have never been before. I've been twice in the past 2 months. I have to say I probably won't be back for another 30 years, if ever. Pretty much everything on the menu is fried. Had the fried chicken dinner. Kroger has better fried chicken and that isn't saying much. Green beans weren't much better. Just not good flavor. Second time I tried the Nashville hot chicken. Nashville would be ashamed. There was no hot at all. Fries were natural skin on but they were overcooked and tasteless. The coleslaw was decent but certainly not better than KFC or Lee's. read more

Nice sports bar. The servers are always friendly and the food is always delicious. I particularly love their chicken plate. The fries are good and I enjoy their vegetables of the day. The bar is very consistent and they know how to mix drinks properly. Would highly recommend you give this place a try. read more

Food was good on st Patrick day. Wings are wet rub. Smokers smell comes in the door. Happened to go on a basketball game day and it was crowded and loud. read more

Two of us had breakfast. Waitress was very friendly. We found the meals to be less than satisfactory. Biscuits were very hard and burnt sides were down to hide. Gravy had a flour after taste. The only grits they had were not American style they had jalapeños in it and were very thick cheesy and gooey. I did not like it. Eggs were fine. My Country Fried Steak had not been run over enough times and was so tough and contained so much gristle I counted sawing eight times average to free a piece from the roadkill with their knife. The place in daylight looks old, rundown and electrical wiring and cords hanging. Needs a major renovation in my opinion and possibly a new cook. read more

Fantastic service! Fantastic food! Our server was very friendly and made sure we were taken care of. A quiet place with fun atmosphere.

The chicken was good and the honey mustard was amazing but the fries got really soggy. The bbq pork barley had bbq sauce. But other then that was great, the service was great and everything else would recommend the chicken if you go. read more

Great local spot! Real deal sports bar, meat and three, big breakfast. The service is second to none! They always treat you as a regular. Easy parking, quick table turn. If your looking for good local this is one of the best! read more

It's been years since I've been to this restaurant and now I know why. While my food was good you pay for every single thing you request like $0.70 for buffalo sauce for the tenders and $0.35 additional for ranch if you use the small container they bring out. This is not okay to me especially when you are already paying $13.99 for 4 chicken tenders and a couple sides plus a drink. My meals was $19 with a tip for lunch. That is too much for my taste for chicken tenders and chips even though they were good. The $$ is the deciding factor for me and the 3 star review. read more

Excellent food, exceptional service, great martinis!! I highly recommend this place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hot browns are out of this world as well as everything on the menu that I have ordered. read more

Great sports bar and food is even better. It is loud and while I'd say it's a family place, beware of some PG13 and higher language coming from the bar area, if you have younger kids. Fried mushrooms were delicious, lightly breaded and crispy. The ribeye special was good and it was a good-sized portion, but it was pricey at $35 in my opinion. I'll definitely be back. read more

We love Winchell's. It is one of our go to places for breakfast. The food and the service are always top notch.

Took my Pop's to breakfast the other day. service was imbecile and the food was yummy. The only downside was the price. For two breakfast meals with coffee was over $40 dollars for a pub style place. I mean the food was good for breakfast but crackle Barrel has the same food for cheaper. read more

Great food and atmosphere. We came for lunch and had the fried green tomatoes, tomato caprese salad my wife ordered the fish and chips and I had a lunch order of country fried steak. Glad to say that I was very impressed with how the food was prepared and it's delivery. the caprese salad felt like it was from farm to table and tasted just as good. The fried green tomatoes were plentiful but I don't think the bacon grease was a good fit for flavor. We asked that they leave this out and I think it was still prepared with the grease. Regular oil would have sufficed. My wife absolutely loved her fish and chips and the tartar sauce was made with actual capers which is a nice touch of authenticity. Wi-Fi is a must because your signal will likely drop to next to nothing. All in all it was a pretty experience and I look forward to coming back. We love frequenting local businesses who do food right. This is especially true when sometimes you've only get the chance to eat once a day so it's got to be good. read more

Some of the original menu items were good such as the tomato soup and sweet potato, but the special was bad, there was nothing special about it. We had mahi-mahi tacos and they were flavorless and dry. A friend had collard greens and they were undercooked. The wings were good, I didn't care for the smoked jalapeño sauce, but my husband did; it was too much like buffalo sauce for me. I didn't like that when you order 12 wings you must have the same sauce on all, we wanted two kinds, but just got one as we're were told we'd be charged for two orders of six if we requested two sauces. The service was just ok. The atmosphere is that of an older sports bar, nothing special. I might go back if friends wanted to go, but this wouldn't be my first pick. If going, I'd recommend staying away from the specials because based on my experience, they haven't been perfected. read more

Winchell's is a staple. Food is good and affordable. I love that their specialty menu gives so many options. There is truly something for every price point and every appetite. I would really recommend the fried pepper rings and the twice baked potato. The fried pork chops with gravy are great, too! Ask for Vanessa to be your server when you go. You won't be disappointed! read more

This place has been around a long time. I'm not as impressed as many others, but they have pretty solid consistent "home cooking." It's a pretty old venue, but that doesn't bother me like it will some, as it seems to be kept pretty clean. I like their fried mushrooms, but they are quite expensive @ 11.99 + tax for an appetizer. They also charge extra if you ask for more than the half full tiny container of horseradish sauce. I know eateries everywhere have raised prices, but they seem to be escalating more than others; a Hot Brown is now more than $20 with tax before a tip, making it $25+ in addition to whatever you order to drink (2.99 + tax for tea or Pepsi). A Buffalo chicken sandwich or Philly cheese steak with fries are $16.48 before tax, tip and drinks. That is an expensive meal for this type simple fare. read more

Winchell's is one of Lexington's top places to find several Kentucky/southern food staples, and it's a great place to watch a UK game. My husband gets the chicken livers each time that he goes there, I prefer to steer toward a different option each time. My favorite dish and the best rendition of it, is the Hot Brown. I have always received great service each time that I have visited. My only reason for the missing star from being perfect is the fact that it could use a good "polishing" (great description Jerry A.). Oh, and they don't accept American Express. read more

I've never thought I would have breakfast at a sports bar but after all the great things I heard about Winchell's breakfast, I had to give it a try. Got there around 10.30 on a Sunday morning and found another 20 people hoping to get a seat at Winchell's. Luckily we found two seats at the bar and didn't have to wait for a table. They have a pretty standard breakfast menu online but don't let that fool you. They have at least 8 other items on their specials board that fit their breakfast/brunch service.. My friend ordered a prime rib breakfast plate!!! yes, prime rib!!!! with eggs!!! He loved it.. I could not resist the Elvis pancakes and they were delicious..And if you'd like a glass of bloody mary with your brunch, they start serving alcohol at 11am. This place is definitely worth all the hype. They have good service and tasty food in the laid back sports bar atmosphere..Their dinner menu looks appetizing as well so I might have to come back for dinner another time. read more

I've been here a couple of times for appetizers and dinner. The last time I ate here a few months ago, I was happy with the quality of the food and the service. Tonight we had slow but friendly service, with the appetizer coming out after our meals, and I may be the only person who would notice this but I counted the number of chicken wings in the order of "12 wings" only to find 10. Had I known that, I might have ordered the 6-wings that was cheaper. "12" wings was a whopping $10.99! And then my boyfriend and I both ordered burgers. They were tasty but the tomatoes were nearly rotten. I had to cut a big black spot off my tomato slice and the rest was borderline rotten looking. The one thing that REALLY bothers me is being served food that isn't fresh at a restaurant. I would rather someone just say "I'm sorry but we don't have any tomatoes tonight." The fries were beyond soggy, but I'm not a big fan of fries so I didn't even eat them. Over all Id still give the place another chance and hope that I don't catch them on another off-day! read more

Yeah, it's a restaurant/bar with lots of TV and booze. Yes, Lexington has a million such establishments. It only has one, however, owned and chef'd by two Culinary Institute of America graduates. That'd be Winchell's. So, it's bar food done right. Abe and Graham, the chef/owners, have totally put in their time in the upscale, fine-dining world. And I think that one day they just said to hell with pretension, let's make the best nachos in Lexington. Fries. Wings. Burgers. One of the greatest joys in life is their pulled pork BBQ quesadilla. I'm allergic to pork, but I will eat a box of benadryl to just steal one bite... Vegetarians take heed, you have a lot of options here, which you probably can't say for any other sports bar. Several vegetarian soups and sandwiches, and entire menu of veg side items from which to make a "vegetarian plate" and veg of the day as well. As someone who has spent some time as a vegetarian, I became sick to death of the ubiquitous portobella mushroom, and all of the thoughtless portobella-based meals that vegetarians are subjected to. And yet, the portobella sandwich here is spectacular. My husband is a huge football fan, and I hate sports. It's thanks to Winchell's our marriage has worked out- He can get a Kentucky Ale, watch the Greenbay game, scream his head off and high five with the regulars around the bar. Meanwhile, I can enjoy a bowl of made from scratch tomato soup with the best grilled cheese in Lexington, feel comforted, and somehow survive the sporting events that surround me. Since I'm not a sports fan, I almost neglected to mention, that there are approximately one hundred million flat screen TVs here. The seating area is so vast that you are certain to find a table/bar stool near your game of choice. Sports fans, take heart. read more

Delicious real sausage gravy is served here! I despaired of ever finding gravy like granny used to make in restaurant, but my desire was fulfilled at brunch yesterday. I had the breakfast sampler and loved it! The biscuits and gravy were definitely the star of the meal, but the fried eggs, bacon, and home fries were also good. Although, the home fries were a tad overdone. The portions are huge and the prices are not! The atmosphere is kind of loud with TVs and music playing. Also this place is just great so it is busy. read more

Just moved to Lexington and spent some time researching the "must go to places". Winchell's came up on every search and was recommended by several neighbors. The outside is not fancy and I was a little skeptical as we walked up, however the beer and food was AMAZING! We had the beer named "Southlandia", very good. The waiter told us it is brewed just for their restaurant. We ordered the hot chicken with fries and white bean soup and spicy chicken sandwich with chips. Initially, my husband ordered "hot" for his sandwich and the waiter cautioned him to probably get the sauce on the side. Good idea because it was VERY hot.. habanero. Good flavor, but lingering heat. My hot chicken was breaded well and I dipped it in their homemade ranch. French fries were fresh cut and seasoned well. The bean soup was my favorite item though. Next time we go, I'm getting just that with their sweet cornbread. Our waiter, Jeff, was excellent. He made recommendations for the food, telling us which items were the local favorites and homemade. We asked for other local restaurants to go to and he was happy to list several places that he hopes we support in this challenging time of a pandemic. Can't wait to give those a try, too. We will definitely be back! read more

Winchell's has been a staple in Lexington since the 1050's. It is mainly a sports bar, but it's also very family friendly. Their food really rocks, from a kid's hot dog plate to a fabulous hot brown. I have never had a hot brown until this visit. It was as huge as a dinner plate, swimming under rich mornay sauce. Two of us split one hot brown, and we were both stuffed to the gills! Everyone else's orders looked just as fabulous: the daily special ribeye steak, & a sandwich. Even the fries were specially seasoned & delicious. There's only one caveat to keep in mind: if you arrive at 12:30pm, you have to wait until 1 pm to eat. They stop serving breakfast at noontime, & the kitchen needs time to transition to lunch. So you cannot order breakfast & lunch menu items at the same time. The wait is definitely worth it. read more
