Seafood platter - traditional batter fish, clams and scallops.
Murray W.

If you're ever engaged in a conversation about the top fish and chip places in Halifax, several names are bound to come up. Everyone has their own preferences, dictated by personal tastes and individual experiences, but the same places tend to pop up and Willman's is one of those. Located on Isleville, just a block past the Hydrostone market, the restaurant is very clean and much more recently renovated than your typical fish and chip shack, especially ones as old as Willman's which has been around since the '40s. My buddy and I popped in around 7pm on a Tuesday, so there were only one or two other tables occupied at any given time. Perusing the menu, they have all the deep fried fare that you would expect at a place like this, but also some more unique additions that fleshed out the menu in a more unique fashion. They have a few poutine choices, including Newfie poutine (stuffing/dressing added), which I always appreciate seeing. Cod tongues in the appetizer section also added to their seafood cred. There's also a handful of baked fish options for the more health conscious among us, and interestingly a fairly large pizza section. I'm not sure how many of these they would sell with Salvatore's just a block away, but hey, not everyone likes fish I guess. Feeling hungry and wanting to try as much of their seafood as I could, I settled on the seafood platter which comes with one piece of fish with the batter of your choosing (light or traditional), fried clams, fried scallops and fries. Coleslaw and gravy were options, but I turned them down, just opting for some tartar sauce, and there were a few options for vinegars as well. They have Propeller on tap, but I opted for a Sprite instead, as somehow in my mind that seemed like the lighter option. Our food came out fairly quickly, heaping piles of brown, deep fried goodness (not in the health sense, obviously). My fish was a good size, and really I wouldn't have wanted it any larger given how much food there was on my plate. It was a deep golden brown, and the fish inside flaked easily with a fork. The fish might not have been *the* best I've ever had, but it was very good. I can't say if the tartar sauce is house-made, or taken from a bottle and put in a dipping cup, but I'm not picky when it comes to that stuff anyway, and it added its trademark zing and depth of flavour to each bite. The fries were a bit of letdown though; hand cut, but not double fried, they were limp and not nearly as crispy as they could/should have been. The clams were as spot on as fried clams can be. Some of the thinnest pieces were a little bit on the chewy side, but with something so irregularly shaped, it's got to be nearly impossible to get them all cooked 100% perfectly. The meat itself had a great, fresh clam flavour and the batter was nice and crispy. The scallops were bivalve perfection, with a light batter and super moist meat inside. The owner saw to us over the course of our meal and was super friendly the whole time. I'm not sure what the typical payment procedure is, but we ended up going to the counter after a little bit of a wait once we were done eating and our plates cleared. With a warm atmosphere and great seafood, Willman's is definitely earning their reputation.

I've finally found my new favourite spot for some good comfort seafood! I ordered the seafood platter(highly recommend) and the clams were fantastic, the fish was incredible, best batter- the food was hot and ready so quickly. Incredible. And the service is top notch, it makes dinning there even better! Lucian makes this place as great as it is, a true Halifax staple! Going back very soon :)

Willman's fish and Chips tucked on the corner of 5644 Kane Street in the North End 454-0929 is a long standing Icon. Not only do the offer take out you are able to sit in and dine as well. Great prices and the portions are hefty. There are different option such as a family pack of 8 piece for $23.75. Haddock is the choice of fish for Willman's when the dip it the golden batter. Nice and light and crispy. Menu consists of Clams, scallops and even chicken nuggets for the kids. This location is a must try and I think the one and only.

Propeller esb and Lucien has it on tap at Willman's. This British ale is the perfect companion to fish and chips

I decided to give my once-favorite F&C place another try and stopped by for lunch. The owner, Lucien, was a perfect host. Making a point to stop at each table to chat and joke with diners. I decided to risk slipping into a deep fried beer coma and got a pint of Propeller ESB with lunch. I couldn't decide on clams, fish or scallops so I got all three in the seafood sampler. I sipped on my beer and chilled. It struck me, for a F&C shop the dining area is clean, functional but still comfortable. It was a warm, Fall day and the many windows gave a great view of the golden Hydrostone foliage. The respectable sized plate arrived in short order. First thing I noticed was that seafood all had a slightly different looking golden batter. Got to like a place that treats clams and scallops differently. I doused the fish and fries in malt vinegar. The hand-cut fries were perfectly prepared. Too bad the fish was swallowed up by a too-thick batter. Willman's offers a lighter batter option too; I'll try that next time. The fish/batter ratio is way off on the regular offering. The whole clams, although tasty were on the small side. I prefer plumper, juicier clams. The scallops were nice and fresh but also shrimpy. Shrimpy- see what I did there?! It felt like kind of a waste to splurge on the platter when the scallops and clams were tiny morsels. It is a small thing, but I was dinged a buck for something on my bill and I have no idea what it was. The only thing I can think of was the lemon slice I asked for. I did get half a lemon but still you should advise customers of extra charges in advance. And I don't think a F&C shop should charge for condiments. And I don't know if the beer counteracted the grease but there was no afternoon coma for me! Win! I am happy to give Willman's a very good, updated review. I look forward to being a regular once again. With the nice atmosphere and option to get a brew with with your F&C I wouldn't hesitate to take out of town guests here for an authentic taste of NS seafood.

Seafood platter, out of clams. :(

A fantastic place to visit if you're looking for great fish and chips. We ordered the seafood platter so we could try everything at once since it was our first visit. Sadly, they had just run out of clams so we were offered extra scallops or fish. Scallops of course! Our order was on the table in minutes, so hot we had to wait a few minutes to dig in. Absolutely delicious fish, we went with the lighter Lucien's batter. Most impressive were the scallops, so often they're overcooked, but these were perfect, and so sweet. Hand cut fries were excellent as well. Our server was alone and quite busy, yet still attentive. It was nice to see the cook bringing orders out when she was tied up with taking orders. Nothing sat waiting for pickup. I'm sure this would have been five stars if the clams had been available, simply judging by the quality of the items we were able to get. Oh, and make sure you try their coleslaw. The chunky cut is a nice change from the usual stringy coleslaw you get at most places.

Awesome fish and chips. Got the lightly breaded lucien fish and it was perfect. Light, crispy, not too greasy and the fish was fresh and moist. Fries were only average, but we came for the fish, so who cares. Nice seating on the deck and super friendly wait staff. Everyone we mentioned Willman's to before we went totally raved about it...and they were all correct! Great place!

Fleshing out the options a bit, there's also burgers, hotdogs and deep fried sides like onion rings and poutine.  Having arrived a just after the lunch crowd would have dissipated, I was able to immediately walk up and place my order, which had to be a single piece of fish and chips. I chatted with the friendly woman working there (Fran herself?) and my food was ready within a few minutes. A table next to the truck was set up with cutlery, seasonings and condiments, including spray bottles of white and malt vinegars. With a few picnic tables set up next to the truck, I sat down in the lightly cool, spring air and dug in. The fish was a hefty size, more than enough to make me glad that I didn't get a second piece. I enjoyed the thick, crispy batter and the fresh fish that flaked easily as I cut it with my plastic fork. A cup of what appeared to be homemade tartar sauce, with a generous amount of chopped pickles or capers, added a creamy tang that went well with both the fish and the fries. The fries were hand-cut, and a very deep, golden brown, but weren't as crispy as I would have liked. They would likely benefit from a blanching in water to remove excess starch before frying, and a double fry.  I appreciated the paper plates, but unfortunately there was only a garbage can and no composting or recyclables bin. Fran's could use a little polishing on the truck and the fries, but one of the original food trucks in the city is definitely doing its fish right.

After seeing this little fish'n'chip truck in downtown Dartmouth for months, I decided to finally give them a go. Last year they disappeared when the weather turned cold so I thought it best to get my order of fries when I could. Since I'm a vegetarian, the menu options were limited so I went with the slightly-healthier-sounding french fries over onion rings. In Googling this place (to see if they had a Web site) I discovered the fries are hand-made in the truck each day. And you can tell. They're nice, thick-cut fries. I may have to head back soon to try the onion rings. For all you omnivores, they have fish (fresh from Eastern Passage, I'm told), seafood and burgers too. It was a good experience: just walk up, order, wait a minute, pay, and voila! food. Staff were friendly and happy to have my business.

This was a result of a combination of generally not being nearby mid-day and a certain amount of laziness and culinary condescension (just regular, non-gourmet fries? Pffft). But recently I've been wanting to hit up this stalwart of Spring Garden Road, and made my way here after first burning off some calories at the gym. They've got a few more things than fries and pop, although it's just sausages and hot dogs. Simple stuff, but that's fine. Their combo deal is very reasonable, $7 taxes in for fries, a hot dog or sausage, and a drink; I went with a sausage and water. There's the basics for condiments - ketchup, white and malt vinegars for the fries, mustard, onions, sauerkraut, pickles and banana peppers for your tube steak. There weren't many people ahead of me so my food came pretty quickly, and I plopped down on a library bench, ready to defend it against the aggressive birds that thicken their arteries off Bud's leftovers. Seriously, these must be the most heart attack-prone birds in the world. My plate certainly looked good, with what looked like a regular sized bag of their golden brown fries. It's nice to see that they either use the right potatoes or blanch them first, because they're not too dark like many hand-cut fries. The fries proved to be as good as they looked too, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I was worried that the fries at the bottom might get soggy from steaming in their own heat, so once I was done the sausage I spread them out, and that seemed to work. The sausage itself was fine, a nice snap from the casing and mild flavour made it inoffensive if still unimpressive. It was definitely a lot of food for seven bucks, if not the healthiest. This trip was all about the fries though, and Bud is definitely serving up some damn good spuds.

I played it safe since this was my first meal of the day and went for the one piece. After a short wait, I plopped down on a nearby bench in front of the library. The fish was a good size and came with a lot of fries, however I didn't see any tartar sauce bottles handy and none was provided. The fish had a nice mild haddock flavour and quite crunchy batter, although it was a bit on the greasy side. The fries were hand-cut and fairly crispy for being such. All in all, pretty good bang for my buck, but not the quality that is gonna blow you away. If you do get food from any vendor by the library, I suggest you keep on walking to find somewhere else to sit. The starlings were probably the boldest I've ever encountered, with one actually flying at my plate to try and steal fries! I had to throw fries to them to keep the aggressive little jerks at bay.

As I work my way through my list of Dartmouth restaurants to eat at since moving to this side of…read morethe harbour, it was inevitable that I would eat at Pleasant Street Diner. To my never-ending shame, I never made it to PSD's famed spiritual and familial predecessor, John's Lunch, so this was as close as I was going to get. The room is ringed by booths on the windowed exterior walls, tables fill the middle, and an old-school counter is at the back - complete with cushioned, rotating stools. PSD opens surprisingly late for a diner at 11am, and isn't open on Sundays, but it was unsurprisingly bustling when my friends and I showed up for lunch on a Saturday. Given their operating hours, their breakfast options are limited to omelettes and some breakfast sandwiches, so I opted for a different diner classic instead - their club sandwich. I figured I'd be back for dinner another time to have their fish, so a club seemed like the perfect lunch meal. Despite the crowd, our food came out impressively quick and my plate was piled high with wedges of the triple-decker sandwich and fries. The bread was well-toasted and held up against its layers of thick slices of roasted turkey breast, crisp bacon, and mayo-slathered tomato and lettuce. It was a solid rendition of a diner classic! The fries were of the from-frozen variety, but were decently crispy and very, very plentiful. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention their coleslaw. Normally this is just a forgettable two ounce cup scooped out of a Sysco bucket, but PSD goes all-in with a heap of lightly tart, shredded cabbage that covered the better part of a side plate. It reminded me of some of the Quebec-based rotisserie chicken chains that are all (oddly) about their coleslaw. My next time there saw me coming back for dinner with my wife in tow. We arrived around 6:30 on a Saturday, and while the place was full, there was only one other group ahead of us and we got a table after a short wait. I knew I *had* to get some fish, but I decided to splurge and go all-in on the seafood platter. They're a well-oiled machine at PSD, because despite the crowd (and perpetual takeout orders), we had our food in very good time. The menu isn't very descriptive, but given the other seafood options, I was right in my suspicions that the seafood platter would have haddock, clams, shrimp and scallops. With my past experience, I knew there'd be a good pile of coleslaw as well, and because of that heap of seafood and coleslaw, the fries had to come on their own plate, so really, this should be called the seafood platters - plural! I went after the clams and scallops first, as I felt like they have the shortest shelf life. The random twists and swirls of clam meat were tender and lightly sweet, without a hint of rubberineaa, and a good and crisp batter. I never really get why scallops get a light breading since they're never crisp and it adds limited flavour, but they were also cooked to perfection. My shrimp were pleasantly firm, with an amount of breading somewhere in between the dusting on the scallops and the heavier layer on the clams. My piece of haddock was a decent size, but the batter was pushing the border of being too thick and almost tough, with a mushy fish-batter interface. I'm not sure if this is from twice-frozen fish or par cooking, but it was a less than stellar showing for a place as well-known for its fish as they are. Tartar sauce is left at the tables and it's Kraft packets for takeout, so presumably it is at the tables as well. Once again, the fries were wildly plentiful and perfectly adequate, and I ended up taking most of them and some of the seafood home with me. The seafood platter may be the most expensive dish on the menu, but it can also feed two people! Pleasant Street Diner is carrying the torch of a family of restauranteurs, and while there's room for tweaks to become truly legendary (house-made tartar and hand-cut fries, please!), they're still checking a lot of the right boxes and people are definitely voting with their dollars and appetites.
