Rudy and Olive's redeemed NS fish and chips for me after a disappointing venture the night before. A small, busy little place you could easily pass by, but down home cooking that makes it a local favourite. The service was friendly in a casual no fuss kind of way...exactly what you would expect. The fish was delicious, and everyone in the joint seemed to agree! Moist, flaky, crispy batter, and the tartar sauce was amazing as well. The clams were tender and tasty as well. Disappointed they didn't have chowder, not sure if that's a permanent thing, but I got some down the street. read more

I have had F ish and Chips from here before. They were fine, not great, but good. On Friday I purchased three orders;it consisted of four pieces of fish and a fair number of fries, it cost over fifty bucks..and they wanted a tip. But the big disappointment was the food....worst, absolute worst fish and chips I have ever had. Very soggy batter, VERY soggy..and all was tasteless and poorly presented..flung into three bags, scrunched up and looking very unappetising. I have not ever written a bad review of anything before, but this was so awful, I felt I had to say what I thought. To have paid over fifty bucks for this mess was very disappointing. I will not be back. Go to Fredys in Bayers lake, it's worth the drive and costs a lot less and tastes a lot better. Sorry Rudy, sorry Olive, but you need to get back to basics, you used to be pretty good. read more

This is cute family-own and family-run restaurant with a few tables inside and a few tables on the side patio. The owners are very nice and friendly and it was refreshing to experience good customer service in Halifax area. I came here for a lunch and ordered "Calamari" and "1 Piece Fish and Chips". When you're in the middle of a heatwave, what else is there to do but go out and have a heavy meal of deep fried food? What's that you say? Eat cold, healthy, light foods? Nahhhh. This is where I found myself during one of our recent scorchers that had the the humidex pushing dangerously close to my age. I'd heard good things about Rudy and Olive's fried fish, and their outdoor seating beckoned as much as trying a new-to-me restaurant did. There was a small lineup even when we showed up just 30 minutes before closing, with some people snagging takeout and others also dining al fresco. I was eyeing up the clam platter, and succumbed to its succulent siren song, while my buddy went for some fish and chips, as well as onion rings. We set up shop at one of the picnic tables at the side of the building, nestled amongst some trees that afforded a view of the basin, a nice contrast to the unappealing Bedford Highway view in the opposite direction. After a short wait, our platters were soon before us. My clams were immediately noticeable as being quite large (for clams), which was encouraging, and the first bite did not disappoint! A light, crisp breading ensconced the sweet and tender meat. No rubbery bits here! The fries were hand-cut and golden brown, and although they were just a *bit* less crispy than I would have preferred, being buried under a heap of clams can have that effect. My friend was kind enough to share some of his fish, and I was quite impressed. The pieces are a great size, and the batter was crisp and airy, with no mushy fish-batter interface. The fish itself was flaky and easily separated into even chunks. The onion rings were of the battered variety and were a solid example of this savoury side. God I hope the Canada Food Guide counts this as serving of vegetables. There's a lot of mediocre fish and chips in Nova Scotia in spite of the bounty that surrounds us, and Rudy and Olive's is showing those slackers how it should be done! read more

I ordered a 3 piece fish and chips, an order of calamari, gravy and cole slaw through Uber Eats today. I expected the food to be slightly warm, coming from Bedford to Halifax, however the fries were ice cold. Aren't businesses suppose to ensure that their food arrives to the customers hot? Not sure who is at fault Uber Eats or Rudy and Olives. Now for the taste. The fish is lightly battered, but very bland. The fries were probably the worse fries I've ever had. Perhaps if my gravy had been delivered, it would have gave the fries some flavour. Oh, I forgot to mention, the gravy was not delivered!! Very disappointing. The calamari has the potential to be good, but again, it just tastes so bland to me. I've seen so many reviews on social media about how Rudy and Olives has the best fish and chips in the city. Poor Take Out/Customer Service: I'm a foodie, based on reviews, was super excited to try take out at this place. Was hoping to give them a 5 star review. I live in Dartmouth. Was late arriving and assumed the bag sitting on left of counter was mine. Small place so 5 people in line is congested. Cashier was busy, man on the floor asked the person in front of me if they were picking up a take out, the person said no. He didn't even look at me and went behind counter to retrieve take out orders that were passed through the window. I left the line and went in front of him, giving him eye contact. He sat 3 orders on the counter in front of me. Turned his back and walked away. So did I, I left. I called them to let them know about my experience and that my order won't be picked up. I was informed that if I should return, I should say " I'm here for take out". To that I say "wouldn't that require trying to speak to a man who obviously doesn't want to acknowledge me. Turned his back after I followed him to the take out window". Even the best food in the world, would taste horrible after that experience. I went to Pleasant St Diner, they are always busy but inclusive and know how to maintain their customers. read more

Reels online convinced my husband and I to give them a try. It was good. Batter is light but greasy. Not many fries. I would try them again but the dark haired lady at the counter...rude. Should not be a face for this company. She was rude to other workers, customers, and delivery drivers doing pick ups. No pleasantries at all. I was there on a Friday evening and it was packed. The best Lobster Roll, Hands down! We only had 6 days driving around Nova Scotia, sampling 3 rolls, incl a hi-end joint on the ocean (light on the lobster &with cold, overdone fries). This family-owned place was bustling with happy locals who we chatted with in a warm, welcoming space with a lovely, engaging owner. Highly recommend! read more
