This is cute family-own and family-run restaurant with a few tables inside and a few tables on the side patio. The owners are very nice and friendly and it was refreshing to experience good customer service in Halifax area. I came here for a lunch and ordered "Calamari" and "1 Piece Fish and Chips". The food was good and I enjoyed my meal.

When you're in the middle of a heatwave, what else is there to do but go out and have a heavy meal of deep fried food? What's that you say? Eat cold, healthy, light foods? Nahhhh. This is where I found myself during one of our recent scorchers that had the the humidex pushing dangerously close to my age. I'd heard good things about Rudy and Olive's fried fish, and their outdoor seating beckoned as much as trying a new-to-me restaurant did. There was a small lineup even when we showed up just 30 minutes before closing, with some people snagging takeout and others also dining al fresco. I was eyeing up the clam platter, and succumbed to its succulent siren song, while my buddy went for some fish and chips, as well as onion rings. We set up shop at one of the picnic tables at the side of the building, nestled amongst some trees that afforded a view of the basin, a nice contrast to the unappealing Bedford Highway view in the opposite direction. After a short wait, our platters were soon before us. My clams were immediately noticeable as being quite large (for clams), which was encouraging, and the first bite did not disappoint! A light, crisp breading ensconced the sweet and tender meat. No rubbery bits here! The fries were hand-cut and golden brown, and although they were just a *bit* less crispy than I would have preferred, being buried under a heap of clams can have that effect. My friend was kind enough to share some of his fish, and I was quite impressed. The pieces are a great size, and the batter was crisp and airy, with no mushy fish-batter interface. The fish itself was flaky and easily separated into even chunks. The onion rings were of the battered variety and were a solid example of this savoury side. God I hope the Canada Food Guide counts this as serving of vegetables. There's a lot of mediocre fish and chips in Nova Scotia in spite of the bounty that surrounds us, and Rudy and Olive's is showing those slackers how it should be done!

Calamari. Three-piece fish and chips. Tartar sauce, and a very small coleslaw that I paid way too much for.

Terrific fish and chips. The fish is so fresh with a nice thin crispy batter. Lots and lots of fries.

Located in an empty lot across Armoyan Drive from the bowling alley, they've got their main trailer for their hot food and another for ice cream. Despite the sweltering temperatures, I was here for lunch. Fish and chips gets tops billing on their menu, just below their fries, so I went with the one piece ($11.75 + tax). There weren't many people ahead of me, and I was able to snag a spot in a sliver of shade on one of their picnic tables that had an umbrella. The portion was quite good, with a sizeable filet on top of hand-cut fries. The fish was either lightly breaded or a very thin batter, and while I normally prefer a thick and crispy batter, this was some undeniably great fried fish. The coating was lightly crispy, and the quality of the fish stood out with firm, tender chunks that flaked away easily without a hint of mushiness. The fries were quite thick, about half an inch, and while they had a good colour to them, the crispness wasn't where I wanted it to be. A double frying is basically mandatory to get a good thick-cut fry, and I'm not sure that happened here. With the fish being so good, I saved most of the tartar sauce to aid the fries' cause. It's great to see a classic chip wagon set up shop in Sackville, and even better when their fish is as good as it is. If they can step up the other half of their fish and chips game, I'm sure they'll be a local favourite for many summers to come.

The Long Version: I had heard great things about Evan's Seafood so my husband and I made a special trip to Dartmouth from Halifax on our vacation to check it out. It's right by the Alderney Ferry Landing so we took the ferry over and we were right there (ferry fare was $3 a person and it's a 15 minute ride). We got the Platter for 2 ($40) which came with 2 pieces of haddock, 4 Digby scallops, a half order of clams, half fries and half salad. We got to choose our salad (from Cesar, garden, spinach or Greek) and we got the garden salad with the dressing on the side. The amount of food was not sufficient for 2 people, imo. We had to go get a second dinner afterwards, lol. (My husband is an average-sized man and I am a much smaller than average-sized woman). Everything fit on one regular-sized dinner plate. However, the food did taste good ;) The Platter for 2 is gluten-free by default. The haddock breading was crunchy and I liked that it wasn't overly greasy. The scallops were a good size and were nicely cooked. Tender and not rubbery. The clams were good as well, although there was lots of batter on them. The fries were crispy and although not shoestring fries, I still enjoyed them. The salad was fresh and had a good variety of vegetables, but it was only a few mouthfuls. You order and pay at the counter. You tell them if you want to sit indoors or outdoors. They give you a numbered table sign and you place it wherever you want to sit. They will bring the food to you when it's ready and will clear the table when you're done, but they do not check up on you otherwise. Ambiance is...well...you're eating at a ferry terminal, lol. But if you eat outside, you're by the water. The patio was busy though, so we ate inside. I'm glad we tried it and it was fun taking the ferry over. (178)
