I was stuck in an area that was new to me and needed to eat. I came upon this local pub and had no expectation. I food was reasonable and so were the prices. Good pub grub! What was the outstanding feature was the staff. Very friendly, very helpful, very efficient and not at all pushy. While I hope I not stuck again but if I were I would no hesitate to use this grill. This was a on-the-go meal with you young adult kids while on vacation. We chose this place specifically for its gluten friendly menu options. It has many gluten free options, and for that I comment them. Service was friendly and attentive. The venue is nicely decorated with sprinkles of the turtle theme but seems to be struggling with identity as it's not quite a pub and not really a restaurant. None the less, food is pretty good and menu is a bit broader than a typical pub. Sometimes one thing can transform a meal. Turtleback Tap and Grill has a very pleasing decor, a comforting space between the tables, and a really nice bar. And the meal I had here was fine: a lightly fried haddock that was nicely prepared and wonderful grilled root vegetables, a meal that was unfortunately marred by lumpy, mediocre and tasteless mashed potatoes. But then I ordered dessert. The warm ginger caramel cake, a spice cake covered with a caramel drizzle and served with whipped cream on the side, was one of the best desserts I've ever had. And I've had a lot of desserts. On a cool evening, this combination of delicate spices, densely textured cake, pieces of ginger, and the glory that is caramel made for an irresistible combination. We love the Turtleback. The inside is cozy. In the summer the patio was fantastic, and now that it is enclosed we love sitting out there on the side bench seats with the new heat pump or the propane heaters. Fast, friendly service every time. Great local craft beer options (Nine Locks Dirty Blonde is our go to!), and a nice, varied gastropub menu. The Crème Brulee is delicious! Support your local restaurant/pub; you won't be disappointed. Those complaining about it being small: I believe it is right-sized for the area. Yes, it can get busy at peak times (like Friday and Saturday evenings), but we have gone many times since it opened and we've always been able to get a table. read more

What a fantastic place! The view was amazing and the atmosphere was so calm and chill. The burger was on a specialty bun and it was full of spice and piled with fresh veggies! The rigatoni pasta was great. The price was more than fair and the portions were more than satisfying. Our server was so kind and brought over glass bottles filled with water. We are on vacation and heading to Boston through Halifax. Famished, we found this gem unexpectedly. What a great find! The seafood chowder was full of seafood in a cream broth, neither too thick not too light. We had fish and chips. A nice haddock fried in a light crunchy batter. Our server was Rachel. Disappointing! The seafood chowder was tasty, though it needed salt and pepper. Large pieces of fresh seafood were a plus. The fish and chips were mediocre at best. Crunchy batter on the fish, but the flavor was bland. Even the fries tasted bland and not worth eating. The Haddick seasoned with thyme and served with veggies and mashed potatoes was also sub par. Service was cheerful but slow. If you are looking for great chowder and fresh local seafood, try Saltys down at the Halifax Harbour. Drove past here a few weeks ago and never heard of it prior, but decided to check it out for lunch on a cloud, but nice Thursday in May. My friend and I arrived just before 1pm and the place was mostly full inside, with I would guess a capacity for 50? It was quite loud with conversation so we opted to take a two-seater table on the patio since it was mild enough. (Yay, for first time on a patio this season!) There are seven or eight tables out there and a lounge sectional, with those tall portable heaters. Privacy wooden fence on each end, but a waist-high wooden railing running the main length of the patio to provide a lovely view of the river. Inside there is nice wooden flooring, standard tables, nice lights, a semi-large bar, and cool wood panels running the length of the corridor to the door which are in the design of city buildings. Friendly service. My club and fries was pretty good, not overly memorable but good foccacia bread, thick turkey breast, quite filling. My friend had the fish & chips and said he liked it a lot, "grease but fresh & crisp batter with good shoestring fries' and finished his plate clean. I'd definitely go back here anytime as there many things on the menu I'd try. 2nd visit: supper on a sunny Wednesday in June with my parents who were visiting from out of town. We originally tried going to the MicMac Tavern, which they like, but the wait was much too long. So we drove down the Waverley Rd to try here, although the drive was longer than I remember it being, so they were getting a little impatient and hungry. When we got there, it was kind of busy but we were able to get a four-seater table. My mom tried the daily Chicken Parmesan special and liked it a lot. The breast was large with I believe fettucini noodles and some Chinese broccoli on the side. I had the nachos were were okay, nothing exciting and I wouldn't get again, but really nothing wrong with them either. There was a teenager at the table next to us with her barefeet up on the seat, which was grossing me out, but I didn't feel like mentioning anything to her or staff about it. What a great find. Needed something quick on the way to the airport and this "out of the way" seemed perfect. It was pretty quiet for 1 pm on a Saturday but got busy really quickly. Still, the service was great. Had the one piece fish and chips. Very good and not too greasy. Perfect size for a lunch. The fries were deadly! I've been to Turtleback 4 times now and have to say the quality food you get at what I would consider incredible prices is spot on. To get a homemade soup and nice big wrap for usually $11-$13 is amazing in my opinion. Owners are great guys, waiting staff always very polite and professional. Quick stop for lunch while in a work trip in Fall River. (For a nice area, not a lot of options!). I think They had just opened and we're working out the bugs a bit - good food, but took a little while to come. Server was nice and friendly, and food was good. I had the chowder bowl. The interior is smaller than I expected from the outside, and the small space made It somewhat noisy. Hopefully a bit more decor while come and help soften the atmosphere. When the outside patio opens, looking over the lake, it should be a really nice spot. We'll definitely come back when in the area again. Great atmosphere and delicious food! Love the little shout-outs to the local area in the decor (awesome bar top) and drink names. Very accommodating of children, with toys and a reasonable kids menu. We had a couple of appetizers: calamari, haddock bites and spicy mussels. Haddock and mussels were sooooo good! Cocktails are creative and delicious too! We had supper here and the best way to describe it was wow!!! My wife and myself both had the seafood chowder as an appetizer awesome! I had the classic burger fantastic! We've been in a couple times for lunch or dinner...the service has gone from excellent to very poor. Last night was he last time we will enter the Turtleback. There were several tables empty...when we walked in, they seated us and that was the last time anyone visited our table. The people next to us on both sides were served, then two young ladies came in, sat down behind us....were given water, then later given menus...then the waiter stopped by their table listed the specials...still no one came and asked us if we'd like a drink or gave us menus..after 15 minutes we decided to head to the Inn in the Lake....as obviously we were being totally ignored....when we got up to leave the waitress that had sat us said, have a great night...I told her...your service is lousy....she said...really? She seemed surprised, seriously how did she not remember she had sat us there earlier and never came back!..it's not a big establishment....they need to get some sort of management so everyone knows who's serving which table....the decor is okay... and the food we've had in the past has been good, but the last couple times we've been in the service has gone way down hill....last night was the last time we will waste our time here! Inn on the Lake is right down the road, better atmosphere, great service ALWAYS! And excellent food! read more
