This is the old Thirsty Turtle location, so I was familiar with the spot, but probably saw a Facebook post about the new business. Generally, I rather support small business restaurants, and the menu looked good, so I'm glad I checked it out. Lucy is very friendly. Most of my visits it has been very quiet, with only her working. Hoping/assuming it gets busier as the day goes on. Mind you, I love my tranquil time to sit and have a delicious meal and Sissiboo coffee with a book in tow. Her menu creations are more healthy than average, different than the basic bacon & eggs, but she seems willing to adjust any dish, so if you are someone who likes to keep it simple, I'm sure that's doable. I loved the Jane's Addiction is the best example of a healthy but tasty breakfast (half a toasted Montreal style bagel that she buys from the business on Wyse Rd, topped with avocado, crisp bacon slices, old cheddar with an over easy egg. Served side side of perpetual salad (mix of kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, julienned apples & beets, shredded carrot, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, sliced avocado, topped with crumbled goat cheese, with poppy seed dressing on the side). The Sweet Waffle (gluten friendly waffle with bacon, whipped cream and choice of sauce) will satisfy the sweet tooth, yet is still a reasonable size to avoid the guilt (I tried the blueberry orange sauce) Yum!. Her Breakfast Bowl (spiced sweet potato home fries topped with two scrambled eggs, tomato, mushroom, spinach, chives with cheddar or goat cheese, meat for $3 extra) is delicious as well. The Classic Lucy (choice of meat and her bacon is cooked to perfection for me, two eggs your way, spiced sweet potato home fries, etc) is just as good as the rest. I can't see everything on the online menu but the Naan breakfast had avocado, cheddar, pico de gallo, egg, etc on naan) and was amazing. I will definitely try some lunch items someday here, but breakfast out is my favorite to eat out and I recommend that to anyone. Atmosphere inside is quite basic, wooden tables, long and narrow in layout with some natural light coming in the front, artwork on the walls for sale from local artists which is nice. I've noticed some people will just stop in to get a coffee and baked good to go. No issues with parking. A nice little spot for the folks in Waverley.

The atmosphere and the layout of the restaurant was wonderful. Lots of booths to sit in, main area tables, and the bar. Started with a few starter appetizers- the coconut calamari was a winner at the table. Everyone had something different for entrees and all was good. Would highly recommend this place for people who want to come and chill and have a comfortable area to come for both work or personal.

We had the Bellinis special, but they weren't very slushy, nothing like the posted photo. We mentioned it to our waitress for the 2nd round, she made a bunch of excuses that their machine in Halifax doesn't work properly, etc. We said well, try your best and then next ones looked exactly like the photos, and very delicious. The blue margarita was also exceptional if you like a tart drink. As an appetizer, we had the bruschetta, it was to die for! Highly recommend that! There were 4 of us, and everyone was very pleased with their meal, except the lady that had the Beef Wagoo Meatloaf. Some of her friends had been raving about the dish, and she decided to try, it was unremarkable at best, dry and heavy, not buttery and moist as she had expected...we all took a taste and everyone agreed, thumbs down for that dish. The Crispy Chicken Bowl, Ramen Bowl and the Chicken Penne were fabulous, highly recommend all 3. In hindsight we should have sent the meatloaf back, but we were drinking and having fun, and didn't really want to spoil the afternoon. We will definitely be back, lovely spot to hang with girlfriends.

Saturday matinees with Wayne Nicholson and the Eastenders combine great talent and irrelevant humour for a great afternoon of music and fun. Montes has a small kitchen and a pretty standard menu of pub fare, but the food is good. If you enjoy live music shows, Montes is where to go to hear bands at their best - without leaving with your ears bleeding.

We rolled in fairly early to get a solid spot to see the Pikes perform (For those of you not up on your late 80's can-con. The Northern Pikes sang "She Ain't Pretty, She Just Looks That Way") and to grab a bite. Monte's prides itself on good, cheap meals for the "Tough Economic Times" and I must say we get exactly that. The food was tasty and cheap and I would go back again for it. What surprised me most about this place was the quality of their show equipment. When The Northern Pikes took the stage the music was very well mixed and very professional. I assumed I'd be seeing a rinky dink production, but am happy to report it was absolutely top notch. Both the band and the staff should be proud. Also, I won twenty dollars playing the slots, so, all in all, this was a great night and a great overall experience at Monte's! I will definitely be back.

This is my second visit to Janina's…read more The first time I got schnitzel, garlic mashed potatoes and type of creamy cucumber salad. It was fantastic! The potatoes were so perfectly garlicky, and the schnitzel was delicious. The cucumber salad was tasty and I've never eaten cucumbers that tasted as good as those ones. This dill pickle soup is the reason I came here. I read about it and I just had to try it. It's delicious and flavourful but isn't overwhelmingly "pickley", and everything I hoped it would be. The cabbage rolls tasted very authentic. They have a nice light flavour, and a really good texture. To top it off, they give you a homemade roll that is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. I was so impressed by this little hidden gem. The prices are great. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and very attentive. The food is delicious. They even have a little eating area you're welcome to sit at to dine in. It's very casual and quaint. I will be back! Thank you

It's pretty rare that I'm making a stop in Dartmouth, and if I am it's for one of three reasons:…read more 1. It's Christmas and I'm shopping at Micmac Mall. 2. I'm trying out a new-to-me Dark Side restaurant. 3. I got stabbed on my way through Dartmouth and am now at the ER. Luckily for me, my most recent visit was for #2 (snicker), with my target being Janina's Cafe, a lunch spot in Burnside that has a Polish bent to it. Located in one of the massive strip mall-ish buildings between Burnside Dr and Brownlow, it took some Internet sleuthing and good old fashioned driving around the building to find out how to get in (hint, it's on the Burnside, uh, side, by the RBC office).  Janina's is a lunch spot catering to desk jockeys if I've ever seen one, with just two two-person tables, a counter with the hot foods in trays, and a kitchen in back. The menu is your typical sandwiches, soups and salads that you would expect, as well as hot meals that vary with the day of the week. While the guy behind the counter was suggesting the shepherd's pie, I was here to try their Polish fare; I don't need to cross the bridge for a mediocre club sandwich and salad, there's plenty of those in downtown Halifax. Unfortunately, their Polish items are few and far between, with only one a day, if that on some days. I was here on cabbage roll day though, so I went with those and a good ol' fashioned Caesar salad.  It was nice that the Caesar was made to order, instead of being a soggy mess that had been sitting there since 11am. The cabbage rolls were larger than I had expected, being the thickness of a small wrap, instead of egg roll-sized, as I had pictured in my mind's eye. I took a seat, the only person to do so during my time there, and dug in. The Caesar wasn't anything fancy, with mozza for the cheese, and it was hard to tell if the sparse bacon bits were real crumbled bacon or sketchy fake-on. At least it saved me the guilt of ordering fries. The cabbage rolls on the other hand were fantastic. The filling had a generous amount of ground pork (I think) mixed with rice, and was still moist and not overcooked. The tomato and cream sauce added further richness and a slight acidic bite. Their may have only been two, but like I said, they were big and hearty. While a person like me would love it if they took more of a Polish food focus, Janina's is making a go of it feeding the hungry Burnside masses what they want. Better to have the occasional access to Polish food, than having a place like the Russian Laura's Cafe which never found a market for its tasty dumplings and borscht. Pop in if their Polish grub is on the menu that day, and join me in lobbying for fresh pierogies to be available everyday!  #VotePierogie2016
