Seafood platter. I love how they put the fries on the side for the takeout orders.

Pleasant St. Diner never fails. Always fresh and tasty. Had the seafood platter, with calamari as clams are not in season. I could eat here everyday

    Seafood Chowder

I have had a craving for seafood Chowder for over 3 weeks. I found The Pleasant Street Diner, had this for reasonable price. The chowder had quite a lot of fish in it. Social distancing was done outside. The staff in the store were very nice. As customer return due the wrong order, the staff allowed the customer to keep mistaken food free of charge as well as food order. I will be returning

Seafood platter. Haddock, clams, scallops, shrimp with fries.

Great value here. Fresh seafood deep fried is the main draw. Pepsi products and canned beer to drink. Scallops, whole clams and haddock are excellent. Good service. Ample parking.

The location may seem a little sketchy to the point that you might decide to but leave your vehicle, but considering the easy parking in this larger lot, it is worth the effort to walk into this non descript restaurant. You will probably need surprised to see how full the tables are. In fact, there was a line up on the weekday lunch hour visit when we were there once seated, the servers proved to be very quick to serve, they were friendly and engaged with their customers. Our food arrived within minutes of being ordered and we could but help but comment on the large portions presented to us both. The amount of calamari on top of the fresh salad was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed eating the calendar first before tackling there huge, fresh salad underneath the mound of calamari. In short, the calamari was tender, the battery was slightly oily, but very acceptable. The salad was very fresh with generous amounts of feta cheese and kalamata olives although the red onions were surprisingly too 'oniony'. The pan fried haddock was very early tasty and perfectly cooked. The ample fries were acceptable. All in all, a good visit to a diner style restaurant. I will definitely go back

    Great breakfast!

This review is for the Bayers Lake location…read more 1) Lost 2 stars for poor customer service and lack of information: We walked in at 7:00 p.m. to try their Friday trivia night. (We had called to book a table for trivia and when we walked in, they said no need to reserve--it doesn't get that busy. That should have been a warning.) We sat down for our meal. By 8:30, the first round of trivia had only concluded (this is considered slow--more on that below). That's when the server came by and grumpily asked if one of the people our party was 19 or over (he's 18). When we said no, she said he had to be out of there by 9:00. She didn't think to tell us this at 7:00, knowing we were there for trivia? No signage anywhere on the premises saying "Patrons under 19 have to leave by 9:00 p.m."? What kind of short-sighted policies do they have here? They were happy to take our money and not tell us that we'd have to leave by 9:00, knowing that we wouldn't be able to finish trivia. 2) Lost 1 star for slow and uninteresting trivia. Questions were read straight from a card by a host who didn't seem interested and didn't engage with his audience. He read each question slowly about three times, hence the s-l-o-w pace where it took 30 minutes for one round that didn't even have audio or video clues. The lack of players should have been our clue that this trivia event is not a success. 3) Lost 1 star for loud, eclectic ambience--this place doesn't know what it wants to be. The trivia was taking place at the same time as music on the speaker and sports TV were playing, all jumbled together at the same time. Maybe that's why the host had to repeat each question slowly several times. But hey, if you want to watch baseball while answering questions about Thomas the Tank Engine and listening to Mumford and Sons simultaneously, this is the place for you. If the food were good, it could save this place, but nope, just mediocre fare that could be served at any pub. And don't get me started on the quick little brown movement we saw out of the corner of our eye, darting under the dining tables. We know it's common for restaurants to have this problem, but flagrantly in the dining room while we were eating makes it easy to warn everyone we know never to come here. Solid nope, nope, nope for this place.

What's open on a Monday evening for food can be really hit or miss, so when I was looking for a…read morepre-trivia meal in the lower part of the North End, The Duke's had little competition in the area and ingloriously won by default. This space used to be the Foggy Goggle, and it's gotten a little bit of a freshening up since then, but the narrow bar still has a cozy feel. There was a handful of other customers, but unsurprisingly it was relatively quiet. The menu is moderately-sized for a pub, with several each of apps, sandwiches and entrees - enough to give you a good selection but not so much that you're overwhelmed with choices. In non-American chain restaurant boycott times, I'm a big fan of Wendy's bacon mushroom melt, so it was an easy choice when I spotted the "Mushroom Peppercorn Burger" on the menu. My bowl-loving wife opted for the Mexican Rice Bowl, one of several dishes that are gluten free or can be made so. A moderate wait later (shout out to what appeared to be the lone cook in the kitchen doing his best), and our food was before us. My burger was a messy sight to behold, with the peppercorn-dotted gravy posing from the burger and onto the plate. More importantly, it lives up to its visual appeal! The gravy was a stole the show, with the prominent, peppery bite playing off the rich, velvety gravy. Bacon and frizzled onions added some crunch, while melty cheese and mushrooms amped up the umami. Somehow, the bun withstood the onslaught, although this burger was absolutely a multi-napkin affair. My side Caesar salad was perfectly adequate - nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either. My wife enjoyed the mix of flavours and textures in her Mexican rice bowl, and although the grilled chicken portion was good and generous (and blessedly not from-frozen, diced chicken), the rest of the bowl ingredients were a bit lacking. A little more rice would go a long way to fill things out a bit more, with limited effect on food costs. Our next time back also found us coming by on another quiet, Monday evening before trivia elsewhere. Spice bags are a bit of a "thing" in Ireland, as a post-bar meal that originally Chinese takeout spots served up, and then they propagated to other restaurants and eventually beyond Irish borders. Some pubs in Halifax have picked up the low-key trend as well, which isn't surprising since at its core, it's just chopped up chicken fingers, fries and seasonings - all of which pubs typically have anyway. The Duke's version eschews the takeout bag roots of the dish and gets messier with a sweet chili sauce, as well as a curry mayo on the side. I'd definitely prefer to see the fries and chicken tossed in a dry rub so that they can stay crispy, and the cloying, commercial sauce just isn't necessary. If you're looking for some deep fried and indulgent, this is your fix. The Duke's has charming bones and some interesting items on the menu, but some small tweaks could easily elevate their offerings and make this a great local for the neighbourhood.
