TL;DR/The Short Version: Seafood restaurant right at the Alderney Ferry Landing. Food was good, but the Platter for 2 was really small for 2 people. The Long Version: I had heard great things about Evan's Seafood so my husband and I made a special trip to Dartmouth from Halifax on our vacation to check it out. It's right by the Alderney Ferry Landing so we took the ferry over and we were right there (ferry fare was $3 a person and it's a 15 minute ride). We got the Platter for 2 ($40) which came with 2 pieces of haddock, 4 Digby scallops, a half order of clams, half fries and half salad. We got to choose our salad (from Cesar, garden, spinach or Greek) and we got the garden salad with the dressing on the side. The amount of food was not sufficient for 2 people, imo. We had to go get a second dinner afterwards, lol. (My husband is an average-sized man and I am a much smaller than average-sized woman). Everything fit on one regular-sized dinner plate. However, the food did taste good ;) The Platter for 2 is gluten-free by default. The haddock breading was crunchy and I liked that it wasn't overly greasy. The scallops were a good size and were nicely cooked. Tender and not rubbery. The clams were good as well, although there was lots of batter on them. The fries were crispy and although not shoestring fries, I still enjoyed them. The salad was fresh and had a good variety of vegetables, but it was only a few mouthfuls. You order and pay at the counter. You tell them if you want to sit indoors or outdoors. They give you a numbered table sign and you place it wherever you want to sit. They will bring the food to you when it's ready and will clear the table when you're done, but they do not check up on you otherwise. Ambiance is...well...you're eating at a ferry terminal, lol. Evan's Seafood uses a fast-casual operation model where you order and pay at the register, obtain a number, sit down, and they'll bring you the food. Their 'taste of everything' platters are a great way to sample the menu. The platter for two ($35) comes with two pieces of fish (we added an additional piece for $6), clams, scallops, fries, and salad. The fried fish was exactly how I like it prepared. Very lightly battered so there's a delicate crispy crust encapsulating flaky fish. The moist fish was delightful and made even better with some of the zesty creamy tartare sauce, which arrives two to an order. Similarly, the fried scallops are lightly breaded, so the scallops' sweetness stands out and is best enjoyed au naturel. They were addictively delicious; I could easily have a full order of these on a return visit. Only the clams were something I could have lived without. They're a bit "fishier" tasting and greasier since it's more battered. Still, with a squeeze of the lemon and hot sauce the flavours improved. The fries and salad were a decent portion for sharing. And while the fries were a bit soft, they were made from cut potatoes and tasted fresh. Tasty food and the beautiful Halifax skyline view aside, what made the experience excel was their friendly service. We were well looked after, with people regularly checking in on us, despite sitting on the patio. And the cashier stressed that we didn't need to add a gratuity, although it would be appreciated. When my friend pressed her about why she'd decline a tip, she noted that it's a tough economy and didn't want customers to feel pressured if they couldn't afford the extra money. I am a frequent customer. Today when I was looking at the char and going through the pieces in the freezer, I was made to feel like I was stealing. I had three people ask within 5 minutes if they could help me, one lady was so close to my face I felt very uncomfortable. I get it people must steal but this was un called for. read more

We only grabbed the lobster roll on its own, while the lobster meat was on the skimpy side, the flavours were great! After reading the previous reviews, I guess they just reduce the amount of lobster meat in the roll over the years. For a takeout joint, $30($26+tax) for this roll alone was pricey in my opinion. We were asked to tip on the takeout as well, which is a little ridiculous because there was no table service just waited for the buzzer to buzz and we got up and went to pick it up, we simply got a box with the roll and had to ask for a fork and napkin. We stopped at Evan's as part of our all day tour of Halifax and Dartmouth. Because of this I wasn't expecting value or quality, but I am pleased to say I Was Wrong. This place serves up fresh fish at value prices. We had the 3 piece Fish and Chips (we actually substituted Onion Rings for the fries). The gluten free coating was a change from the batter dipped we have been accustomed to, but it was light and delicious. The Onion Rings were crispy goodness. Others with us had the scallops and shrimp. All was great. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. The views of the harbor from the outside deck were great. I will not be returning. I have been coming here for the past 3 years excited for the lobster roll + the recipe. It had always been consistent. On our visit this weekend, they have clearly changed ownership or have changed what they're willing to offer their customers. When you compare the photos of Feb 2024 and June 2024 it's pathetic. They have reduced the amount of meat, changed to smaller buns and added heaps of mayo to fill the roll BUT no change in price. I will not recommend this spot any longer. read more

Stopped by this place with friends the day I left Halifax for the lobster rolls and it did not disappoint! The food was tasty and you can see from the counter that it's made fresh to order. The lobster roll wasn't a big as I thought it would be. You can see in the photo that it's about the same size as a hotdog. However, the roll and the fries filled me up. The oysters were very fresh and absolutely delicious. There are tables so you can eat in if you want; and the server will bring the food right to your table. The staff were friendly and will make suggestions if you're on the fence about what to order. We arrived around lunch time and the line was massive, so if you're starving you might have to wait a bit. Overall we had a great experience, I will be back next time. I'm still confused as to why Evan's seafood had such high ratings. My yelp search for the best fish and chips in the area was the reason why we stopped here. The staff helped us order too. The seafood platter, which was recommended because we can taste bit of everything was underwhelming. The fish was bit dry. The clams were very chewy. So glad that some locals we met at the Devour Film Fest recommended Evan's Seafood at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth. You can take the walk on ferry from Halifax across the way for a lovely view and bite or drive across the bridge (just remember there's a toll). We stopped here on our last morning before flying home. We lucked out and it was a Saturday market day with so many amazing local vendors selling their wares and fresh baked goodness. We opted on just sharing one fish taco and a single piece of fish so that we could also get some treats in the market. Both items were prepared perfectly. Tender, moist, and full of flavour. I would most definitely order these two items again and again and again. The food was DELISH and the view heavenly outside from the picnic tables overlooking the bay (even if it was coooooooold). It's open seating here - not restaurant style, think food court. And I imagine you could even get your fish 'n chips to go and take it on the ferry with you as well :-) After reading all the fellow Yelper reviews, I wish we had tried the chowder! Entirely unpretentious little lunch counter -- plus frozen fish to go -- in the ferry terminal on the Dartmouth waterfront. We'd heard good things but weren't entirely sure what to expect given the setting. We were quite pleased with the seafood plate and the lobster poutine that we ordered. The fried seafood was golden-brown delicious; the side caesar salad was fresh and loaded with crisp bacon; and the lobster poutine was delightful, almost like a lobster alfredo with fries instead of noodles. My partner and I were craving a good lobster roll so we went to Evan's to try their offerings. We bought a one lobster roll and a small lobster poutine for a total of about $88. The first thing we noticed is that it was warm, which was unexpected. There seemed to be a decent amount of lobster but the vast majority of it was ground (tomale?) with very very few tiny choice pieces of lobster. Taste-wise, instead of mayo, which one would traditionally find on these sandwiches, it had hot butter and some herbs. While this may sound attractive - it' wasn't at all. The herbs were completely overpowering (and overall rather disgusting). You couldn't taste the actual lobster in either the rolls or the poutine because of whatever recipe they were using. Overall, I'd have been way happier with a McLobster. I'd give 0/5 stars if the ratings allowed. The ambiance is that of a cafeteria. Not terrible. But all orders had to be done at the counter which seemed to take an inordinate amount of time considering it wasn't terribly busy. The food did arrive quite quickly after ordering -which would have been lovely if it was any good. It was quite simply the worst tasting lobster roll either of us had ever tried. We choked down what we could (it WAS $88 after all, which we were saving as a treat), and we took what we had left and will try and fix it with some mayo or something, though I don't have high hopes for success in this endeavor. OUTSTANDING!!! This place was a hidden gem for me and my friends visiting from the US. While I dont eat seafood, the cauliflower tacos were an AMAZING vegetarian option. My friends had the lobster roll, the haddock burger, lobster putine and there was only praise heard around the table. One of the best parts of our lunch there was the server Nathan! There was a great debate among many of the locals that we talked about who had the best fish in the Halifax area. It came down to two: John's Lunch and Evan's Seafood. As we headed toward the airport to head for our Alberta home, we decided to make time to stop off at both and make up our minds for ourselves. Evan's Seafood was located at the Alderney Landing Farmer's Market in Dartmouth. As we walked in this lovely Saturday morning, the market was bustling and busy and the lineup for Evan's was quite long. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait very long to order our one piece Haddock and spicy fish tacos. We found a table just outside the doors in the eating area and the young staff member didn't take long to find us and delivered our food right to us. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he brought the food out to us on a porcelain plate and with real stainless steel cutlery, not the cheap paper plates and plastic forks and knives that most food courts have. I'll have to admit, Evan's Seafood was fantabulous! I can thoroughly understand why so many locals raved about Evan's. The fish was cooked perfectly and carried just the right amount of seasoning to make the meal fantastic! While I didn't find the fish tacos spicy per se, the flavour was such that it made me forget about the spiciness or lack there of. While I have already posted a very positive review of John's Lunch (check it out!), the consensus is clear... Evan's Seafood and John's Lunch are two VERY different places but they both can boast of having EXCELLENT food! I recommend highly both places if you like great local fish. Halifax being the type of city that it is (port, with a colonial British-centric background), there's a lot of fish and chips here. Even pizza places have it as a menu fixture! And with that comes even more opinions on who serves the best. Truth be told, a third is going to be average, if you're lucky. The bulk of the rest is worse than forgettable; so mushy or overcooked that you'd prefer to forget it and it went back to the freezer from whence it came, but its awfulness has scarred your taste buds' memories. Evan's, however, is a humble place just across the harbour (and I mean *just*), that consistently comes up when the best fish and chips joints in the city are being discussed. Located right in Alderney Landing, it's owned by a fishing family, so that's a big feather in their cap of legitimacy (it's the latest fashion). While slowly whittling down my list of restaurants to try out for the first time, I decided to take the ferry over to Evan's on a cool, but sunny, winter day. Not being particularly familiar with the complex, I took an embarrassingly long time to find the place, so the easy directions for others is just go left once you're off the ferry. Not up any steps, just keep going left. Learn from my shame. I planned my trip to arrive after the lunch rush would be over, so there was no line and just a couple of the tables that were occupied in the food court-ish set up. To no one's surprise, their compact menu is honed in on seafood, with the likes of fish and chips, scallops, lobster rolls and lobster poutine. Given the way this review started, it will also come as no surprise that I went with the fish and chips, although just one piece so that I wouldn't put myself in a fried food-coma. After ordering at the counter, I sat down and took in the nice view across the harbour. My food was brought out in fairly quick order. The fish was a respectable size and the pile of hand-cut fries was healthy (figuratively) as well. I knew what I was getting into when it came to the style of fish here at Evan's - they use a gluten free breading instead of my preferred beer batter. That said it was crispy, and the fish was super fresh, although a little thin compared to most places. The fries were quite crispy for hand-cut ones, and the tartar sauce was so good that I was dipping my fries in it. While a breaded piece of fish will never be the best of the best in my books, this was a fine entry and they know what they're doing at Evan's. Bonus points for a menu that is mostly gluten free, which is nice for a type of food that typically isn't accessible to people with celiac. read more

We're visiting from California and saw the reviews. Thank the gods that we did, as the lobster roll was GREAT. That led to repeat visits. Was it 3 or 4 times in the past week? Doesn't matter. Every meal we had there was on point. My wife wanted to try their gluten-free carrot cake. I wasn't so sure about that. But tried a bite of her slice. Carrot cake was added to my subsequent orders. Delicious fresh fish, sandwiched between an incredible soft bun, covered in (what I'm guessing is) home-made tartar sauce - at only $5.00, this is a must order! You can also order a spicy fish burger... We also got the lobster poutine, and some fried scallops (we were very hungry) The lobster poutine was super good, but, there wasn't very many pieces of lobster in it, for nearly $10 with tax, and it was fairly small. Their tartar sauce was the best I've ever had - I can't even explain it, you have to try it for yourself.
