    from Clearwater to the table

Unless you actually know a lobster man, there's no place you can get fresher lobster than at Clearwater. They certainly are the premier lobster distributor in Eastern Canada, sending their lobsters and other fish and seafood around the world, but let's focus on local, shall we? Walk into the Bedford Highway head office and retail location and you'll first and foremost be impressed by the huge lobster pools that are the centerpiece. Lobsters are separated by size and weight and no matter which you choose and they all are lively....critical especially when you want to cook your own and want that "right from the ocean" flavor. We chose two pound lobsters that were so sweet, so delicious, so tender, that I'm still dreaming about them. If you're not into lobster...although...seriously, how could you not be?...there are cases and cases of fishes right off the fishing boats that pull up to their pier as soon as they return to port. Oh...back to you non lobster lovers...my husband actually likes the flavour, just not the "work" (his words) and now you can buy fresh lobster meat already packaged...no fuss, no muss, just great taste.

Not being a lover of fish unless coated in batter I was on a mission for a gift for my parents. Long time ago we got them some King Crab legs and I was told that Clearwater had some of the best. Located half way out on the Bed ford Highway you will see the big lobster so you wont be able to miss it. You think growing up in the Maritimes I would live fish especially when my Dad used to take me out in his fishing boat sorry I guess the smell brought back some memories. Anyway there they were some of the largest King Crab legs I think I have ever seen. If I am not mistaken a box was 24.99. The staff there are very good offering cooking suggestions so that we do not overdue them. As well great on hand sauces as well as neat little utensils. Not only do they have King Crab legs they of course have lobster as well as every kind of fish that you can imagine.

Clearwater is located on the Bedford Hwy. We have gone here on numerous occasions for lobster. Go in an pick your feast. They run specials a lot on fish as well. Sometimes they have a taste tester there for you. When we were there they were sampling a battered fish. Which was great, so much we bought it. They will box for you as well for shipping.

If you're looking for respite from the…read morenever-ending monotony that is shopping at the regular grocery stores, I definitely recommend it here. When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is all the British imported food and snack items.. Reminds me a lot of my childhood and I usually buy something for nostalgia sake. Right beyond that is beverage display case with all sorts of drinks you'd rarely see elsewhere. I especially enjoy their local and import ginger beer selection, as well as Ribena. Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. If my budget hasn't been blown yet, it's sure to be so once I'm done at the Frootique. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once). I definitely recommend this place, though, even if just to window shop. You might discover something new on every visit.

The Long Version: When my husband and I were in Halifax recently, we did 2 Markets back-to-back, this one and the Halifax Brewery Market and I personally liked the Halifax Brewery Market better, as it had more interesting foods and vendors and wasn't as crowded. My impression is that this Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market is more for tourists and the Halifax Brewery Market is more for locals, but I could be wrong. I got a Pancit Bihon for my husband and I to share at Pinoy's Best Halifax. It was $7 for a small serving. It tasted good and had this Liptons Chicken Soup smell that I loved, lol. Weird, I know. I just didn't like that they microwaved it in a plastic container. I would have preferred it if it was kept in metal warming trays and served into a cardboard container. My husband got a 4L jug of Maple syrup from Ripley's Maple ($58) for his sister. She was coming to Halifax too but not when the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market would be open so she asked him to get it for her. He gave it to her in Halifax and she was driving home, so we cannot attest to whether the jug would survive a flight in checked baggage, it would be at your own risk, lol. I'm glad we checked out this market. If we were in the area again on future visits to Halifax I would drop by, but I wouldn't specifically plan to go to it like we did this time. (179)

Also just a short jaunt off the 102. I am, however, re-evaluating my choice to pick this branch as my default place to buy food, and have found myself more and more using the larger, newer and better stocked Sobeys at the Larry Uteck exit off the 102. But back to this location, access can be a bit of a nightmare during rush hour since both HP rd and the Beford Hwy can get super backed up, and the surrounding intersections become hazardous to say the least when traffic peaks. The inside of the store seems new and bright, though the layout is a bit more confusing than other Sobeys. This could possibly be due to recent renovations, having to overlay a new layout over old infrastructure. Other than that, the staff are super friendly and seem to enjoy working there, which is always a good sign.

The seafood and butcher's area is always clean and well presented, and the meat is delicious. They also have an excellent "Hippy Section", as I've always called it, full of healthy foods and ethical household supplies. I can't think of anything majorly wrong with this location. Sometimes they dont have everything I need (Artichokes, why are you never here?) but they come pretty darn close. It can be a bit tricky to finds things sometimes, but if you've ever played a point-and-click game, you can usually deduce where everything is. No basil in the the herb section? Check with the tomatoes up front. Can't find the pancake batter? Check with the syrup, not with baking. It's either a fun brain teaser, or a deeply frustrating exercise, depending on your mood. Plus the cashiers are always hilarious, which is always a bonus!
