I've recently switched from doing most of my grocery shopping at the Sobeys on Bedford highway, to…read moreusing this location at Larry Uteck.. Mostly because its more easily accessible by car (Bedford hwy intersection with HP rd can be a nightmare). There are also many more box stores in the immediate surroundings, so I get more done on a single trip when I come out. Its also super convenient if you work out at the Goodlife fitness around the corner. You can often see a lot of buff bodies roaming the aisles in the store at any given time. The layout is a little weird, but you get used to it. The refrigerators that line the back of the store take some getting used to.. I keep forgetting where to get the yogurt vs cottage cheese and other dairy products. The staff are super nice here, and the shelves seem to be better stocked, especially in produce, than many other grocery stores around. That brings me to my next point in that its usually much quieter than other Sobeys or Superstores. You're unlikely to find long lineups here on even the busiest days.

We decided to stop in on the way back to pick up bottled water and a couple other things for our hotel room. I stayed in the car while my husband did a quick run in and out. He reported that the store setup seemed weird to him and he spent a lot of time looking for the maple cookies. Cashier was friendly, he just thought the layout of the store was confusing. Hard to comment about the prices because of currency in Canadian and we are from US so everything seems so much cheaper. Posted sign says 2 - 24 pk water for $5. That would be $3.66 U.S. Dollar! Or $1.83 per 24 pls.

Google maps revealed that this grocery store is a short walk from the cruise terminals, though you have to walk away from it a bit because of the railroad tracks. We found displays of maple syrup but had to ask for help finding the maple candy. It was in the bakery department and there was only one option but it met our need. Shop at walmart, let all their over priced meats rot on the shelves (as they are, just wait a day and 90% of the meat will be 50% off and likely rotten the next morning but they'll gladly sell it to you) Personal peave: Every shopping cart sounds like a dump tuck full of sheet metal because they refuse to service them as it would cost money and might make the whole experience slightly less horrific. If you let a clerk know about a huge spill people are walking all over they'll audibly sigh and roll their eyes at you.

The peppers were much more expensive, as well as the tomatoes and whole chickens. The peppers were shriveled up and soft. Bananas are 1.49/lb which is ridiculous. And they are not even organic. I would never go out of my way to shop here like I would Gateway. The only thing I saw cheaper was re-frozen sandwich meats that looked like crap and bags of chips. The Slightly Longer Version: This urban grocery store reminds me a lot of The Kitchen Table of days gone by (in Toronto). It has a small amount of groceries and has baked goods from local suppliers as well as prepared ready-to-eat foods. They had some locally brewed kombucha too. When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is all the British imported food and snack items.. Reminds me a lot of my childhood and I usually buy something for nostalgia sake. Right beyond that is beverage display case with all sorts of drinks you'd rarely see elsewhere. I especially enjoy their local and import ginger beer selection, as well as Ribena. Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. If my budget hasn't been blown yet, it's sure to be so once I'm done at the Frootique. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once). I definitely recommend this place, though, even if just to window shop. You might discover something new on every visit.

The check out lines here can be long at times so I usually use the self checkout.
