Thick cut, and I swear it loses less weight when it's cooked; not sure if this is because it's less fatty than regular commercial bacon or if that stuff is water chilled, but I'd say you're getting more bang for your buck in both quality and quantity. I think it clocks in at $8/lb. The breakfast sausages were a substitute for me when they were out of bacon on a recent visit. They have a fairly mild seasoning to them, and not quite that typical breakfast sausage flavour, which I am admittedly a sucker for. They're a bit more coarsely ground than most sausages, and could use a bit more fat added in as they are a bit on the dry side for a sausage.$7/lb. I picked up a batch of maple-cured English bacon on my last visit, which I'm looking forward to trying! Your more basic cuts of meat are fairly reasonably priced, but be ready to suffer some damage to your wallet if you're getting any of the high end cuts.

I highly recommend the apple rosemary sausage. They also have maple sausage and banger sausage. You can see them cutting the meat in front of you so you know it's fresh. Their website goes into detail how they raise their cows and why it's better for the environment and the cows. I am happy to support this business at the Farmer's Market. Taken from their website about the importance of eating grass fed beef: "Grass-fed beef and lamb are now considered a health food of the highest order. Compared to grain-finished meats, it is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, and especially conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an essential fatty acid largely missing from modern diets and found almost exclusively in the dairy and meat products of grass-eating ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats)."

Rotten centers in the sweet potatoes being a regular occurrence. Items I would normally buy there I had to shop elsewhere for as they werent fit to take home. They have expanded the ready made section and I often grabbed something for the drive home to snack on. I didnt care for everything I tried but would not return something simply because it wasnt to my liking. Last week I purchased some hot pepperoni for the drive home. Ive been eating pepperoni since I was a kid. I like hot. I do not like mild or honey garlic. I was disappointed as it turned out to be mild. I checked the label but it was marked hot. So this week when I went in I grabbed my items as well as a package of pepperoni around the same price. I brought my receipt and the pepperoni purchased earlier. I have never returned anything to Daves in my life and actually just wanted an exchange. After paying for my other items and waiting for a manager I was denied an exchange and told it wasnt their fault just because I did not find it hot enough. I have had to return things to Giant Tiger, Costco, Sobeys and superstore. I have always been treated well and never given a hassle. This is not the customer service I expected. I was embarrassed and made to feel like I didnt know what I was talking about and I was wasting busy peoples time. They have lost a customer in me and 3 family members as well.

I speak somewhat in jest, but honestly, for all the cute little stalls and funky shops to check out in the area, I'm amazed that more Haligonians don't venture across the pond. The unseasonably nice weather we've been having certainly made for a fun ferry ride, and once we arrived, the farmer's market is right in the ferry terminal. Not nearly the size of the brewery market, but lots of hand knit goods like toques and monster like teddy's (playing off of the 'Wild Things' release it would seem) as well as fresh produce, jewelry, baked goods, seafood, and hand carved sculptures. I highly recommend you check out the 'Dartmouth Farmers' Market.' I was impressed to see many of the older European stall proprietors haggling fiercely for the price of toques and other trinkets. Far less crowded than the Halifax market as well, so go check it out!

Humble Pie recently opened a permanent location in Dartmouth, so it was cool to see them making the trip over to this side of the harbour still. Now I've never had a New Zealand meat pie before, but after the steak and cheese ($7) that I ordered, I definitely will again. Initially it might seem pricey, but these pies are meals unto themselves. At 5-6" in diameter, they're a decent size, and they're jam packed with their respective filling. My steak was sliced and browned wonderfully, with a great beef flavour. I'm not sure what cheese they use, but it was a white cheese that packed a lot more flavour than your typical mozzarella or the like. The pie crust itself seems like it was made to withstand the ooey gooey deliciousness inside - not too thin and not too thick, and more like a slightly spongy dough than a flakey pastry, but not in a bad way. Humble Pie definitely knows what they're doing and using some top notch ingredients. Now that I know that they have a weekend location in Halifax, I can come get my meat pastry fix as I please.

So when I heard they would be on the Halifax side of the harbour for Open City this year...I knew where my first stop would be. I had never been exposed to Nova Scotia meat pies before Humble Pie but knew that I loved meat pies in general so I was confident that I would enjoy my meal. I severely underestimated the tastiness of these pies. The pastry is flaky and buttery, the filling packed as tightly into it as they could get it. I've had both the steak and cheese pie and the mince pie. Oh boy. I don't know if I could choose which I prefer. The steak is sliced into strips for ease of eating (no forks and knives are needed here - I've always taken mine to go so I just bite right into them) and the cheese is slathered over it for optimal coverage. The mince pie is possibly tastier than the steak, and certainly easier to eat on the go (less chance of dripping from the cheese), but I honestly don't know. You'll have to try it out yourself to see ;)
