We were in Halifax on a cruise and wanted to buy some Candian treats, preferrably maple candies, for gifts back home. Google maps revealed that this grocery store is a short walk from the cruise terminals, though you have to walk away from it a bit because of the railroad tracks. We found displays of maple syrup but had to ask for help finding the maple candy. It was in the bakery department and there was only one option but it met our need. There is plenty of parking for those with cars. read more

They're whole heartedly against their fellow Canadians and will take every opportunity to raise prices and keep them there to gouge Canadians. Then lower their prices by a fraction of what was raised just so they can act like they're doing us a favor. Highest prices for food in eastern Canada AND the US eastern seaboard. We are poor as dirt here but that doesn't stop them from keeping their prices as high as possible for as long as possible. Shop at walmart, let all their over priced meats rot on the shelves (as they are, just wait a day and 90% of the meat will be 50% off and likely rotten the next morning but they'll gladly sell it to you) Personal peave: Every shopping cart sounds like a dump tuck full of sheet metal because they refuse to service them as it would cost money and might make the whole experience slightly less horrific. If you let a clerk know about a huge spill people are walking all over they'll audibly sigh and roll their eyes at you. read more

Big superstore grocery with lots of items on sale. Many chocolates that are not sold in the US. Great for bringing back for friends. Good travel size toiletry area and all the usuals that you would find in most groceries. Easy to navigate through the aisles. They have self check out for those in a hurry. Drop off dry cleaning in the front and pick up on the next grocery shop visit. Cellular store located next to dry cleaner. read more

Store was well stocked and clean, and a short walk from the cruise terminal. Wife bought some maple candy and maple syrup made in Canada. Syrup was reasonably priced. When they totaled your bill, you could pay in American dollars or Canadian dollars, with the correct conversion already applied. (Less in American dollars on the day of my visit) I couldn't believe the high prices Canadians pay for food. $1.99 bread, $6.99 bacon, $5.39 milk (Canadian $ prices) Many of the cruise workers were shopping while we were there. read more

This here is a big superstore with gas station onsite. I bought water and filled up gas from this location. The entire store was quite clean and stocked up. The washrooms were in decent condition and they are located upstairs. The parking lot is huge. They lost a star because the cashier was very inpatient and was getting frustrated as my little nephew pull the credit card from the machine and we just had to re-do the payment. The frustration and anger could be seen in her face. read more

Whenever I take a cruise up North to Canada, I always stop here to grab some candy that I can't get elsewhere (or I can, without the duties). This supermarket is located right next to the VIA RAIL terminal, and not too far from the cruise terminal. The exterior of the building looked okay. The interior looked nice, bright and clean. It had everything that a full, typical supermarket would have - fresh produce, a bakery, a deli, a pharmacy, and of course, the general merchandise. The shelves and aisles were very organized. Customer service was just okay. Like I said, I came here just so I could grab a certain kind of candy (by NESTLE) that I couldn't get elsewhere. Their candy selection was decently-sized, and it mostly carried the ones that I couldn't get in the US. A heavy emphasis was made on Nestle and Cadbury. If you have a certain favorite (in which I do), then you'll probably find what you're looking for. They also had a liquor area there too. Their selection was decent, but the prices were really high. Keep in mind that all liquor purchases must be made in that general area only. They also have a separate entrance if you don't plan on going into the supermarket at all. They also had a gas station outside too. A lot of the prices that I saw here were pretty high, hence the removal of two stars. But the sale prices seemed reasonable, even though what I got here wasn't on sale. There was one time when what I wanted was on sale, but not this time. Just a heads up, they won't accept American Discover cards. Overall, if you want to buy some candy or snacks before heading back to the cruise ship, then this place will do! read more

I've been here a few previous times and wasn't always so impressed, but it seems that the new school year has gotten this location on their toes and I'm happy to say I really like this place. Everything is clean and well organized, and even though it's tremendously busy, everything still seems to flow smoothly. They've also started opening all the cash registers at certain times over the weekend in order to avoid lengthy waits. I got in and out very quickly today even though the place was packed. They also have some great stuff on clearance and a nice (but expensive) natural products section. read more

Just remember to bring your student ID! - they have their flyer online, so you can look at specials ahead of time Most of the cheapness comes from buying their no-name brand, and lately the ugly yellow packaging has taken over my freezer. This review is not for the store itself, but for the actual gas station that is part of it. As I was on my travels downtown, I noticed I was almost of out gas. Now downtown does not have a lot of gas stations. This is a self-serve gas station, so on those cold days, like today was , be quick. It is a typical has spot, small place to go in a pay, the cashier is behind a glass closure, but the guy was friendly and the coupon was given for my next purchase of gas. I think I get $3.00 off. My favourite grocery store - maybe because it's super close to my work, where I spend most of my time, or maybe because it's just simply awesome. It's easy to navigate - it's always clean and tidy - staff are a plentiful if you need any assistance - generally not very busy, so it's fast to go through the check outs! Tip: Tuesday's are student discount days, stay clear, unless you're a student, it can be quite busy. I do believe students get a 10% discount. My one Tuesday exception: at lunch they have a 'Tooney Tuesday' special: 2 chicken tenders and taters for only $2.00. AWESOME! read more

I didn't think this Superstore location could get any better, but then they became 24hours. The students rejoiced, especially as this means you can go a bit later on Tuesdays to avoid the discount rush. This location has a very broad selection of global foods, which is fun when you want to try something different than the same old, same old. Last night, however, this location went above and beyond. They were my knights in shining armour, as I was not feeling my best and passed out in the check-out line. I know, how careless and embarrassing of me. The cashiers and security guard were all very helpful and brought me water and sugar discs to wake me up. They then stayed with me for over twenty minutes while we waited for someone to pick me up (Thanks Mom!), never acting as though I was an inconvenience. They were polite and distracting and kept me smiling and laughing. I am beyond grateful to them. A wonderful place to shop, and an ok place to faint. Not that I advise it. It really is no fun, despite what Victorian ladies would lead you to believe. Thanks again Barrington Superstore! You're the best! read more

I worked for this company for a huge chunk of my life, mainly in the hardest department, and also for other departments, both day and overnight shifts. Would never recommend it to anyone 30 or over. There is absolutely ZERO chance of moving up if you're a hard worker, have quite a bit of experience, are actually willing and proven to bust your ass. Management will believe any lies told to them by other staff, and penalize you for complaining about health & safety issues (I had a co worker who, in the midst of the pandemic, would come in from her other job wearing her scrubs and the same mask, use the washroom wearing gloves, not change the gloves, nor wash her hands, drop food on the floor and use it, fall asleep during her shift and when I complained to management they penalized me by cutting my hours.) I had to constantly do the job of 3 people, while others got to slack, never got breaks, was lucky if I got a chance to pee throughout the shift, my co-workers told management I did nothing, because they would stay later than me (to make it look like they did my work), and I got punished constantly for this. If I did any less due to injury or being burnt out, I got penalized. I even had to train a couple managers (who had zero department experience) and new staff or get my hours cut, and all of that as a part-timer. Got passed over for promotion twice (the first time was great, because someone more deserving got it),, and someone who bullied and sexually harassed me, for months, and who often refused to do work, got the promotion the second time, without applying. Favoritism is a HUGE thing with this company. Also, If you get injured or sick, don't call off or they'll talk shit about you and treat you horribly. And don't expect backpay if they give you the wrong wage for any amount of time, unless you're new and a male. If you get bullied or harassed, don't expect management to care. They will call you a "complainer" and claim you have "attitude issues" if you try to ask advice or try to get problems resolved, or try to let them know how overwhelmed you are, that you need their help. Three of my managers told me "I'm here to MANAGE, not work IN the department", even when it was me and one other staff member trying to cook, fill the cases, deal with an insane lineup, fill the floor, put away cold and supply orders, AND get bitched out by customers and staff for not being able to have the cash open. I rarely got a break the 2 years I was forced back onto day shift, and never got more than a 10 min break while on nights. Still had to punch for a lunch and work through it. I finally gave up and quit in August. Will never go back. Now they are losing their long-time, hard-working staff in waves now because of poor management. read more

I used to live directly across the street from this store so I spent a lot of time here. At least 3 mornings a week I would be waiting for the doors to open at 7am so I could pick up something for lunch before catching the bus to work. I no longer live close by, but from time to time I will catch a bus down here to do some grocery shopping. This store has the busiest natural health food section in Halifax so it is always well stocked and is full of interesting healthy foods. I am always thrilled when I see the 50% off stickers on the organic milk products, makes it cheaper than regular! The store is well laid out and they have a wide selection of products, including a large international section. The staff here is always super friendly. The things that prevent me from giving it 4 stars are A) No Joe Fresh section and B) Not enough local produce (though they are getting better) Also,if you are a student or a senior, shop on Tuesdays when it's 10% off. I went to this store this evening. and I must say this time was a good experience. I didn't mind the cashier, and they was a few decent deals on for once. The layout of the store still gets me every now and again, but other than that, I would keep going back for my groceries sometimes to this location. Definitely my grocery store of choice (other than Pete's, but who can really afford to do ALL of their shopping at Pete's?) - Overall I'm a fan of the natural section, and the very large produce section (Sobey's... you're lacking when it comes to the fresh stuff) Staff can be a tad ambivalent and hard to get ahold of. More than once i've been told "well... I think it'd be here if we had it at all." Not terribly helpful. I wish Superstore had not reorganized all of their aisles! It's sort of like when you reorganize your kitchen and move all your spatulas, wooden spoons etc, into the drawer the tinfoil used to live in. This is one of my regular grocery stores and while it's not as big as some Superstores (like the one on Joe Howe), it's got a good selection of everything you'd need. I miss the selection of home goods at other locations, but because it is smaller and in a more dense neighbourhood it makes sense. I agree with other reviewers - everything is clean and organized well so that I can always find what I'm looking for. The best part of this location is the frequent sales and discounts - I love Superstore for that! read more

Stopped in to get some supplies for the Christmas party we were heading to. It's a nice and clean store with the 'Superstore' layout that most have. Lots of great deals were to be had.. with plenty of ideas for foods and stuffs. Even managed to pick a great little desktop curling game for my grandfather. The cashier was friendly and bubbly.. and even bagged my groceries as I paid (I can do it myself.. but I always seem to be so much slower than them, and inevitably end up still baggin as the next customer is getting their order rung through) Great spot to shop! read more

The Superstore is my go-to grocery store. The great selection of fresh produce, decent meat with friendly butchers to help you with custom cuts, all those nice President's Choice products, and a wide range of organic products win my vote. Oh, I almost forgot to mention those freakin' delicious donuts! Look out Tim Hortons. Superstore has hired a donut baker who bakes donuts twice fresh daily. For a mere 69 cents, maybe 80 with tax, you can have a big, fresh donut that will melt in your mouth. The donuts are available in a variety of flavours, plain, Boston crème, jelly filled, and chocolate dip, as well as in a few fancy formats like éclairs. I would only say be careful because these sweet things are addictive! My friends and I have gained about five pounds each devouring these sugary babies. Some other things I love about Superstore are the pharmacy where my copay is $3.00 less than at another drugstore chain and the 3 cents a litre cash back coupons to spend on those tasty donuts inside. And I can't forget the friendly staff. Most of the cashiers are friendly, giving this big box store a neighbourhood feel. read more

I'm fairly certain Superstore has taken note of my previous Yelp review, and are making adjustments accordingly. .(.........) Ok, maybe not. But with the recent plunge of renovations, its safe to say our Barrington Street grocery is getting that much needed facelift. I see a better inner structure in our near future, and I like it. Still in the early stages, this will be ongoing for months, which can be disruptive in ones quest for sweet noshes. Alas, as I've been in a number of times since they've begun, the store is doing its best to maintain a respectable shopping experience for its customers. Staffers have been hired to work around the clock and into the late night hours to get things done. Checkout counters have been revamped with sleeker models and longer surface space. The "Fruit to Go" station has been moved and tucked into the corner entryway, which makes a lot more sense. There are subtle changes every time I visit, and its all about making a smoother, more efficient store. Way to go Superstore. Looking forward to having you all spruced up. read more

It might be weird to review a grocery store, but there are aspects of this place that I really enjoy. Namely, the self checkouts and debit/visa tap option. Those two things make me sound very anti-social, but I dislike grocery shopping so much, anything that makes my life easier to get in and out is a plus. Okay, The Superstore's that I'm used are huge and, exactly that: a super store. I'm always really unsatisfied with the amount of kitchen and home equipment they have. The only bake ware they carry is the disposable tin containers and they don't have much for pots and pans or dishes of any sort. The only thing you can get here are groceries... and flowers. Since this is the closest grocery store to me, I visit it often and have learned to look past the lack of house wares. Judging it solely as a grocery store, I am actually quite pleased with my experiences there. I find the fruits and veggies to be fresh (although not always fully stocked) and the isles easy to navigate. The workers at this Superstore are also pretty nice. I had one cashier talk me out of buying No Name cheese and even sent another worker to grab some other stuff. Speaking of cheese, once I bought a block and once got it home noticed it had a bunch of mould on it. Icky. I took it back the next day and they were happy to exchange it for me. I got mould-free cheese instead. So, all-in-all, even though it isn't a giant super Superstore, it's still a great grocery store and I'll continue to go there. read more

Atlantic Superstore, you're weird. First the good: it's open 24 hours a day and usually has good prices and since I think I'm the only vegetarian in this city, I usually get a lot of vegetarian nerdy stuff for 50% off. The produce is ok but their organic selection is weird. Sometimes they have organic stuff, sometimes they don't. The Club Superstore card thing is pretty rad because it tracks your purchases and then gives you points on the stuff you'd be likely to buy. The bad. Number one, sometimes they don't let me get a 10% discount because I'm a medical student and not an undergrad student. Uh, yello, that makes no sense. Also, why is there no Joe Fresh at the superstore near poor college dweebs? I like Joe Fresh stuff and hate having to bike to Joesph Howe to check out their selection. Most of the people who work there are really nice and even though I do cheat on her from time to time with Pete's and even Sobeys, the Superstore is my main squeeze. Oh and they have overpriced freshly squeezed juice now, no pun intended or even, technically, made. read more

I'm torn on the Superstore. On the one hand, I feel it is way overpriced on food and it's always my last stop on grocery day. But on the other, it does have almost everything I am looking for....that's why I go there. My wife loves Joe Fresh and I have made other purchases other than food. It's also very convenient....I live in Portland Hills Dartmouth and I can drive there in less than two minutes or walk up in less than 15. I don't find the staff to be the most motivated group, but most seem to know what they are doing. I wish they had people in the aisles though. I watch a lot of cooking shows and am often on the hunt for a new ingredient. I'm often left to my own devices in the Labyrinth of food or relying on some stranger to help me. How much would it cost to have someone on staff walk the store offering directions? I bet they would sell enough to justify the cost . This store is MASSIVE! I'll give them a four star, because I think what I have written merits it. BUT....please know that I bash the Superstore a lot and rarely have a kind word to say about them. I hate giving a single star, but Atlantic Superstore deserves it. Let's start with the good: It is clean in here. They are open 24/7. The bad: They are frequently and regularly out of items that I am looking for, or do not carry them. This has occurred on more than one occasion. It's a HUGE grocery store, you would expect them to have a great variety of grocery items and products in stock. As well, for a larger store, you would expect them to carry some JoeFresh items, but they don't. The ugly: The customer service and the prices- a special shout out to the pharmacy on this point! On several occasions, I have waited in line here without being acknowledged. I have even been ignored by an attendant at the self check out. But today I had a special experience. I waited to pick up a pharmacy item for close to 10 minutes. Hey- I'm understanding! If you're busy, I get it, but let me know. Instead, this particular pharmacist went about doing her job, made eye contact with me, and continued with her job. When she decided to help me, I asked if I could ring in a single item with my prescriptions and she replied that she was "too busy." (To. scan. a. SINGLE. ITEM? Seriously?) I laughed when she said that, because seriously, that is ridiculous. She explained that if she scanned my item, other customers would expect the same, which she does not have time for. (Makes sense. But perhaps it is the person with a cart-load you should be telling that to; or tell them your computer isn't able to scan grocery items?!). In addition to dismissive pharmacist who reallllly wanted to express her authority, I had to make multiple trips because my prescription wasn't filled the first time I brought it in, and they didn't stock my other (commonly taken) item. Cool. Like the rest of the grocery store, the pharmacy drug dispensing fee is expensive. I'm a fair person though, and I must tell you I did have a single positive experience in the pharmacy. Another pharmacist was incredibly sweet and patient, and she gave me a number of resources to help me find a family doctor. Unfortunately, I will continue to shop here because it's convenient, but I will go out of my way for all future pharmaceutical needs. However, I would never recommend this store. read more

I'm not here to talk about the ins and outs of the Superstore in general, but rather one particular section. To all people on a budget... I have 4 words for you: Half-Price Bread Rack (or would we say that's 3 words?) If you get to Superstore at the right time of day, you can slash your baked-goods expenditure in half. Get yourself to the back left-hand corner of the store and you're in for a low-priced thrill. They've got a whole rack of things from virtuous whole-wheat baguettes to sinful chocolate croissants for 50%-off because they're a day old. Sometimes it's picked over and there are only some lonely-looking English Muffins left, but other days it's every carb-based product you can dream of. Maybe someday I'll be rich and not worry about paying full price for things, but for now I'm penny-pinching, and I greatly appreciate Superstore's contributions to my money-saving efforts. read more

Robotellers = 1 star. I don't think the people who run Superstore understand just how much people hate the robo tellers. If you go to the store there can be 3 or more open robotellers and yet people are waiting 5 deep in the human line-ups. I program for a living and build cool robotic machines for fun and I hate these piles of steaming junk. Over and over the thing has some problem that a human wouldn't even hesitate to handle. But instead they have these uptight employees hovering around the machines ready to jump in and "rescue" you. They aren't rescuing me they are basically calling me stupid and proving that the machines are junk. I have swore exactly 3 times at grocery store employees and all three were when they took something from my hand. I have three requests. One remove the machines. They might look good on your spreadsheets but they make me HATE your store. Two if you won't eliminate them then make them work! If you can't make them work then get your employees to back the *(*&(*&( off. I don't want them making my crappy experience that much worse. If I am 10 deep in a human line then go away. I chose the human over the machine. If do give up and try the machine then stay away. Let me screw with it. But best of all just go out of business and let a human company take over your space. read more

A few problems I have ran into. 1. The staff is not all that well trained on this whole new Pc plus points business. My wife loaded the $20 dollar offer on her phone and it is totally our fault for not reading the full page legal thing on the Pc plus website but hay we are normal people and don't always read every legal piece of crap in our day to day normal lives. So onto what happened. The order came to 97.50 and my wife wondered as I did is this enough to get the 20 bonus offer in points because it will come to over 100 with tax or did it have to be 100 before tax? So we ask the clerk ringing in the stuff and she says tax is fine you will get the points! I thought fine it will be fine based on what she said because otherwise my left hand here at this checkout is about 1/2 foot away from some overpriced gum a couple packs of that and we are sailing over 100 bucks before tax anyway. Well I should have bought the gum because the store clerk never knew what she was talking about. The rules are 100 before tax and a whole wack of other goods and discounts are not applicable to your total. Read the legal agreement on the website before you go shopping is my advice and just like that we missed out on the bonus offer. 2. I will never pay 1.00 for a single lemon. 3. I had something else but with the energy it took to explain number 1 I am all tired out and cannot think of what it was. Dam superstore I am shopping at costco next time. OH it came back to me. So another beef with this pc plus garbage is if you use the self check out the clerk has to reset your screen after you first swipe to varify your pc plus membership only the screen stays frozen until it is reset and you look like a dum ass swiping over and over becuase the screen says swipe your card while the clerk maning the station of 6 self checkouts runs around busy until she gets to you. Yeah it is a pain in the ass better to just say No to the computer you are not a PC plus member unless you know you have PC plus points to gain or you are the only person at one of the 6 checkouts but even then they are not always on top of it and you wait anyway. read more

The best supermarket in downtown Halifax. It is cheaper than Sobeys, and it has great own-brand products. The only thing that could be improved is its selection of international products. Right now it carries a lot fewer international products than Loblaws supermarkets in Ontario. (And of course the prices are lower in Ontario too...) read more

The store has a selection of just about everything, open 24 hours and loads of registers and self checkin options. Being so close to both this store and sobeys I usually find the better deal here, store is cleaner and I can usually get in and out faster. If your a smoker the gas bar seems to have a better deal then the stores in the southend. Superstore has more of the sale racks and carts then sobeys which im not sure has any at all. Never have a problem getting my items here. read more

Since we moved to the neighbourhood, it has taken me three and a half months to visit this store. I live right above the Sobey's a few blocks away, and when I need something that only a big store could provide that was where I would head. Silly me. This Superstore has got my Sobey's beat by a mile. I stick to a few sections: natural foods, produce, baking aisle. And an occasional trip elsewhere for toilet paper or aluminum foil. That's basically it, so it is on these sections that I judge a store. Produce-land is bigger at Superstore, but nothing too shocking. And aluminum foil is the same most places. So it's the natural foods section where Superstore really shines. It's way bigger, and better, than what Sobey's has to offer, and that makes me happy. Some specific things I noticed on my visit were a big tea selection, much better dairy case and improved flour shelf. It all may just be enough to make me walk the extra four blocks to buy groceries. read more

This place is pretty terrible. Have had so many disappointments shopping here though I do appreciate their Tuesday night student discount. By far the worst thing here is the produce. For weeks now they've been selling these large industrial grapes that taste like potatoes. The Presidents choice clementines are never good. Im almost positive they freeze the kale to preserve it or something similar - it has no taste and none of it ever looks as fresh as it should. Part of the problem is the PC brand and the related yellow label which are both abominations. I guess some Canadians like it because the market is so reduced here and they dont know any better. The ice cream section is really sad, basically nothing to see here and lots of space given to dairy free BS. The cookie section is also pitiful - basically all dessicated and miserable things. The house-made baklava is also really awful, dont make the same mistake I did in thinking itd be at least marginally ok. It wasnt. Have had numerous specific annoyances that are really weird considering this store is huge, like the fact that they were out of whole chickens. How can you be out of whole chickens? That is such a normal thing to buy. Its not surprising of course but the entire dairy section has worse selection than a lunar outpost with only rats to milk. Theres one kind only of marginally ok cottage cheese but you cant even buy 4% milkfat cottage cheese or choose between small and large curd. I could go on but god this place sucks. If youll eat anything youll love it but the rest of us arent impressed. read more
