Local frozen berries for you to enjoy all year long!
Breighan H.

Windsor Street Sobeys has gone from sketchy to almost classy! I generally only visit this location when looking for a late-night snack. It's never really warranted visits for much else. I say this not as an insult, however. I've always looked forward to trips to this location, as it's guaranteed to be an adventure. Last night, Brucifer and I decided to take a midnight trip to check out the new renos and to buy some Easter-themed snacks. We were immediately impressed (being the hosers that we are) by the "fancy" carpets in the entryway, and the fact that I found a fabulous seahorse pen on the bakery rack! We spent an hour or so browsing around, analyzing the new store. As far as the selection goes, I was extremely heartened to see so much emphasis on local products. In this age, it should be the rule rather than the exception to it, but sadly it's not (I'm looking at you Superstore! For shame!). There was a double freezer full of berries with a sign that gave me goosebumps as it read "Local frozen berries for you to enjoy all year long." There were lots of other local foci, including a local maple stand display, local bakeries such as Juliens, and a general focus on actually stocking local produce when available (tsk, tsk, Superstore!). Other surprises were an INSANELY HUGE pet section with a fridge full of fresh pet food, a little general merchandise department, and a new supplements section that carries Naturally Nova Scotia (awesome local whole food products) as well as some so-so and top notch brands (not much in between). There's also a not-surprising focus on organic food, with some organic bulk items as well as a larger natural food section which could have a better selection (Mumford and Queen Street are better). With the prices being often higher than the Superstore, and Superstore having a highly superior house brand, I won't change my loyalty entirely. I'd seriously consider it, however, if I didn't buy my produce at the Farmer's Market. If you haven't been since the renovations, I encourage you to check it out. Doing your shopping after midnight always sends you home with a hilarious anectodote (last night's being a huge MMA-looking dude who bought--without hyperbole-- a half cart full of eggs!). I can't think of a better place shop late than here. In the days of the 24-hr Quinpool IGA, I was never provided with this kind of entertainment-- now with great selection and a focus on local products!

Wow, this place is huge! (Mostly) everything you could want in a grocery store! I was a little bummed when I was in today and the fruit section was limited to two tiny rows (including tomatoes!). Other than that, this Sobeys has a huge deli section and would definitely be my grocery store of choice if I had a vehicle. The flyer might make it worth biking up to this neck of the woods once the weather becomes a tad more bearable.

fresh produce and amazing staff

I love this store. First, because it's open 24 hours and since I drop my husband off at his office early in the morning....and I do mean early...before 7am early, in fact. I love the staff who are so helpful and friendly, especially the produce guys who will check manifests to see if what I want has come in and if it has, they'll run out back to get some for me. None of that..."well, I think it's in, but you'll have to wait until everything is unpacked" response I've heard elsewhere. Even better, the cashiers are so personable, they're like family and Helen and the gang remember customers and ask after them, especially if they haven't been around for a while, wondering if everything is okay. Now, where else do you get service like that.

they are monopolistic and by shopping here you are increasing the grip they have on what you buy and at what price.

Google maps revealed that this grocery store is a short walk from the cruise terminals, though you have to walk away from it a bit because of the railroad tracks. We found displays of maple syrup but had to ask for help finding the maple candy. It was in the bakery department and there was only one option but it met our need. There is plenty of parking for those with cars.

Then lower their prices by a fraction of what was raised just so they can act like they're doing us a favor. Highest prices for food in eastern Canada AND the US eastern seaboard. We are poor as dirt here but that doesn't stop them from keeping their prices as high as possible for as long as possible. Shop at walmart, let all their over priced meats rot on the shelves (as they are, just wait a day and 90% of the meat will be 50% off and likely rotten the next morning but they'll gladly sell it to you) Personal peave: Every shopping cart sounds like a dump tuck full of sheet metal because they refuse to service them as it would cost money and might make the whole experience slightly less horrific. If you let a clerk know about a huge spill people are walking all over they'll audibly sigh and roll their eyes at you.

And even the most vulnerable people need groceries, so it seems reasonable to think that a grocery store might be more cautious about a public health emergency than some other businesses. Masks are not required in this store, and haven't been in months. Most people in the store don't wear masks, including some of the employees. Nothing is done anymore to enable people to keep some distance between themselves and others. What finally pushed me to write this review is that, when I went a few days ago, there were people fundraising for something at the exit. None of those people were wearing masks, and their positioning at the exit made it impossible to avoid them. Just terrible handling of an ongoing crisis.

The floral department has been going all out lately - lots of plants exploding out of the department - though I can't say about the quality as I've never bought plants from here. They have increased their Halal food section lately, and have a pretty good selection of dairy-free and/or gluten-free things for the size of the store. You won't find everything you need here (the Superstore on Barrington is a bit better for that reason) but it's pretty decent. The prices definitely feel steeper than at Superstore though.

The one on Joseph Howe might be bigger, definitely has the best Joe clothes line and electronics, and the one on Barrington is open the earliest (7am) which works well when I drop my husband off at the office at the crack of dawn. That said, still my favorite is the one on Quinpool. I love the organization and the great selection of natural, organic and ethnic foods, as if it were a separate store. So easy to find things. The staff is beyond helpful, making sure they take you to wherever the mystery item is supposed to be. Case in point...this morning I was on a mission to find bean sprouts - yesterday being unsuccessful at two other stores. I even went to Pete's downtown and couldn't find any. Pete's is the place I go to for things no one else seems to carry. But not today...today only the Superstore on Quinpool had some. And not yet on the shelves mind you. The sweetest staff stopped what he was doing, went to the back and brought out a box full. Great friendly, efficient service - a huge deal in my opinion. T

I constantly see the items I am purchasing, mostly vegan, rise at a ridiculous rate, most often by $1 at a time, then after a few weeks they put the item on sale for the price it was a couple of weeks prior. You obviously think the consumer is a fool? I refuse to purchase at ridiculous prices so unless you stop gouging the consumer I am done with the Superstore. One example is Riviera Vegan Yogurt. It went from about $4.59 to $7.50 in a few months. The second item is the recent addition of alarms for self serve purchases causing the shopping carts to lock up. After a few false alarms and the embarrassment of having my receipt checked, I am fed up. If you do not want to trust the customer then spend some of your fat profit and hire some cashiers and stop with the self serve option. Get back to providing customer service to the people who purchase from you because without them you would not have a business.

It's so nice to have a spot that serves as a baby-grocery store, offering great local produce and delightful items, like cheeses from Nova Scotia and grains from New Brunswick. You can even stop by for lunch, as they have sammies and salads, as well as coffee, tea and sweets. I love biking over in the summer and stocking up on apples. One of my favorite things to buy is their raw milk cheese from Quebec - it's a real treat, and although it only comes in small blocks it really goes the distance with its rich and flavorful taste.
