Lobster and beer, enough said. Lobster in Nova Scotia is a must and if you're on the way to Peggy's Cove, I definitely recommend a stop here for lobster! Since this comes up before the more busy part of Peggy's cove there's a bit less traffic with easier parking and a chance at getting a table. The views are great as you get waterside dining, but the real star of the show is the lobster! And I recommend getting the reasonably priced special that comes with a beer. We were also able to switch out our side with the seafood chowder which came with even more lobster! What makes the lobster so good here is they serve female lobsters that are rich with delicious, flavorful roe when it's in season. I went here with my family and all of our lobsters were packed with the good stuff. Safe to say our bellies were stuffed full of delicious seafood before we went off to hike away the calories at Peggy's Cove. Staff were friendly and attentive, if its raining they don't have too many tables inside to seat people but they do have a great buzzer system that lets you wait in the car until your table is ready. We got the steam lobster, chowder and fish cakes! Lobster tasted fresh, plenty of meat and came out nice and hot. I would have preferred the chowder a bit warmer, it was only warm when it got to the table. Fishcakes were only okay for us, very heavy on the potato and light on the fish (might be great for some folks but I didn't notice the fish in the cake). I'd go back for the lobster! read more

A great lunch stop for after your visit to Peggy's Cove. Located just a few miles away from the Cove and more importantly, the crowds. Lovely setting on a small cove. We sat outdoors and it was delightful. Food was enjoyable. Mussels, cod cakes and lobster rolls were all good. Draft beers were good and cold. Service was fine. Nothing too enthusiastic but did the job. Their sign out front say it all: Beer and Lobster. Enough said. We got lucky and didn't have to wait for a table. The food was delicious. Loved the lobster roll sautéed in butter-did not know that was even an option over the mayo based one. The seafood chowder was amazing! Large chunks of seafood and lobster. The fish and chips were also very moist and abundant and the chips were perfectly fried. Would recommend this to all. I recommend this location. The only reason I removed a star was because we were there for over an hour and a half before receiving the order. The lobster is really worth it! It was just a really long wait we saw people that arrived after us leave one after the other. Most people have ordered the lobster roll. Apparently, they are amazing. We have been jumping from one restorant to another. Trying to taste as many as we could. We did not want to over do it. We got the lobster $50 for the lobster and beer and the clam chowder. They have beer name the dark horse. It is really good and it has a cool name. The lobster was pack with meat. We went to a few place before this one and the lobster was empty. This was nice for a change. The chowder was ok, too much potatoes for me, but it was nice and creamy. The best thing about this place is its location. Unfortunately the food is not great and the service is lacking. Ordered a 10 oz glass of beer and 3 of the ounces were foam. The seafood chowder has lots of lobster which was good but surprisingly lacking flavour. The 3 fish cakes were big but also just tasted like onion and potatoes with no spice or flavour. My husband said the same thing about his fish and chips. Wish the food was better because love sitting next to the ocean. read more

Shaw's Landing is an amazing family owned restaurant near Peggy's Cove and a must-try. They often get compared to the Sou'Wester which is right at Peggy's Cove. However, I did my research and apparently Shaw's Landing is the place to go instead! Apparently, locals like to eat at Shaw's Landing given a similar menu to Sou'Wester but way more affordable. They are also only a ~5 minute drive away from Peggy's Cove! I ordered the Lobster Roll and Famous Chowder and they were excellent! The best Lobster Roll and Seafood Chowder I have ever had. The Lobster Roll was full of lobster meat (mostly shell meat) and it was delicious. The seafood chowder was simply amazing, full of lobster and fish, and you could really taste the seafood here. One thing to mention is the chowder is watery which I thought was interesting given most chowder's I have eaten tend to be quite thick and creamy but I assume this was done intentionally and did not take away from the experience - each spoonful was packed with flavour. The location is excellent, right by the water, parking is free and there is plenty of it. I really enjoyed their decoration which is about the nature of the area. They have both indoor and outdoor seating which makes it quite nice to eat by the sea when the weather is warm. This is a little side of the road spot, so it's 4 stars with that being the category. We had a bowl of the chowder - it was nice and hot and had lots of seafood. Smaller than we were expecting but still good and would order again. We also had the haddock fish and chips which were awesome. This was my favorite. And lastly we had the muscles in white wine and garlic sauce. The muscles themselves were good but the sauce was meh and I would not order again. Service was lovely. The local NS beer was good. Visited after going to Peggy's Cove, and the food was absolutely delicious. We had the mussels and both styles of lobster rolls, and we tried the chowder as well. The mussels are phenomenal, super fresh and juicy and the sauce is so good you could basically drink it. Lobster rolls delicious as well, and very generous amount of lobster. Personally I preferred the butter version. Chowder also great and creamy with big chunks of meat! Definitely no filler here. read more

Such an amazing restaurant, I came here twice on my recent trip to Halifax and Peggy's. Their chowder was heavenly, one of the best I've ever had. Their carrot cake was to die for. And no nuts!! Staff are super friendly and despite the stresses of a busy restaurant, manages to keep their cool and are totally professional. Plenty of parking but it can fill up because of the number of customers. There is a small pier with an amazing view to pass the time while you wait for your table. read more

I love the signage out front and it certainly caught our eye, good thing it did too, because the place we intended to go to for lobster, Ryer's, apparenently isn't in the lobster cooking business anymore. Being simple tourists, we just wanted some fresh seafood. So, we turned our car around, and made our way back to Shaw's landing for a seafood lunch. Everything we had was great. Starting from the complimentary bread that was served before our meal. So dense and flavorful, easily some of the best bread I've had. One of us had a lobster grilled cheese, served on that same bread, and it was out of this world good. I had a cup of chowder, and split the deluxe seafood platter with someone else at our table. The rest all got a fresh lobster. The chowder was excellent, rich and creamy with big chunk of various ocean magic in it. The seafood platter was a great value, and the two of us splitting it were very content with the amount and variety of food. Those who got the lobster gobbled down every last edible bit of it, and were very happy. Not to mention, we had a great view on their back deck and the customary friendly Canadian service. If for some reason we find ourselves back in Nova Scotia again, we will definitely revisit this place! read more

A roadside surprise in West Dover! The place was full for dinner on a weekday night and I know why! Food was simple but extraordinary! Service was friendly, helpful, and charming. I had the seafood chowder...packed with lobster, fish, scallops, mussels, and potatoes...by far the best I've ever had. My main course was lightly pan fried haddock....damn!! That was mmm good. The fish and chips were okay - fish had too much batter and the fries could have used some more salt but not bad. Place - very roomy but not many tables so you'll need reservations unless you get lucky like we did (someone cancelled and we got their table at around 7). So even though the hours say closes at 8, they actually stay open later than that if it's super busy. There were a few ppl who came at 8pm and they accepted the guests. The only thing thats good is that its near peggys cove and it was a spot to stop for lunch near by. This place was quite disappointing. We sat down and was told the lobster dinner would be $17, we order 3 lobsters. The lobster came out cold and overcooked, it was rubbery and a waste of a lobster. The mussels were a good price at $8/lb but they ran out of cream so it was just plain butter, not bad but could be better. The large fish chowder $12 and the portion wasn't that big, it was watery but had good amount of fish and vegetables, but I wouldn't order it again. When we got the bill we were charged $27 for each lobster, $10 more than what we were told! We asked the servers and they all would not acknowledge that we were told the wrong price and got defensive! Everyone in our table of 4 heard $17. $27 for a cold over cooked lobster was not worth it at all. They have a nice patio which overlooks the water and islands which is the only plus and their bathrooms were surprisingly pretty clean. read more

We went to Shaw's after trying to go to Ryer's and learning they no longer serve cooked food and I'm glad we did! We got the lobster sandwich and the seafood platter. The lobster sandwich was delicious - lots of lobster and the bread was very fresh. The seafood platter was also great - the standout was the fried haddock. If I went back, I would only get the haddock as I found the other fried seafood was too heavy in batter. The service was great too which made for all in all a great lunch after visiting Peggy's cove. Stopped here for supper on the way back to Halifax from Peggy's Cove and saw their "Beer and Lobsters - enough said sign". Jammed on the brakes and parked the car. We chose to eat on the deck outside and as soon as we got out there saw a blue heron hunting for his supper in the shallows - very cool. This restaurant is dog friendly. My wife and I split two dishes - Lobster Grilled Cheese and pan fried fish and chips. There was a surprising amount of meat on the lobster grilled cheese and the outer crust of the sandwich has garlic butter and parsley making it resemble garlic toast - it was delicious. The haddock fish and chips were fresh, cooked perfectly and the light on the batter. Our server was hilarious. One of the people travelling with us wanted to order the chicken strips of the kids menu and the waitress earnestly asked if she wand the juice box that came with it... I died laughing. I nearly sh*t a squirrel when she asked our friend if she wanted the freezie that came with the meal for dessert 30 minutes later... A life long inside joke for the 4 of us - thank you for that :) Good selection of draft beer and one of our top 5 scenery/settings for this simple restaurant of all time. Late evening, still water and lobster boats docked alongside. Add a blue heron fishing for his supper and you have a hard to beat ambiance. On the way to Peggy's Cove you'll notice that there 1. isn't very much around other than houses and 2. The one restaurant that kinda stands out just before West Dover. This is Shaw's Landing. The first time I went here I was actually backpacking in Halifax and just eating around everywhere. Since this place had the "Best Fish & Chips" I had to try it out. The final verdict? This place has the best fish & chips I've ever had. Better than anywhere in Halifax, better than London England; just the best! Why is the fish & chips so good here? It's because of the batter. In my opinion, batter either makes or breaks your fish & chips. You'll either have a giant panzerotti kind of batter which makes you feel like it should come with tomato sauce or you'll have it too crunchy where it makes you feel like it was encrusted with doritos. The batter that they use at Shaw's Landing is delightful. Light and fluffy texture, and just the right amount of coating (not really over battered). The fish was fresh, but then again, it's Halifax... Where are you not going to have fresh fish? I have often boasted about the fish & chips in this place and a lot of people were skeptics before I brought them here. Now that they've tried it, they know exactly what i'm talking about now. To be honest I haven't really tried anything else on the menu. I have the same thing every single time I come back. But the reason why I come back is good enough to order again and again. My husband and I ate dinner here while staying near Peggy's Cove last week. We enjoyed our dinner! I ate as much seafood as I could on this trip and our visit to Shaw's was no exception. I went for the fried clam strips. Very tasty. I barely touched my fries and demolished the clams. So good. Husband got fish and chips and scarfed those down, too. For dessert we shared the Coconut Chocolate Pie with a scoop of ice cream. It was served warm and the chocolate section on the bottom was more like cake. Cakepie. Loved it. The restaurant has this terrible country music station playing and after we finished dinner, my husband said "did you notice that we forgot about the music while we ate? For a moment, it disappeared..." So true. Ambiance is what you might expect from a roadside seafood joint. Tacky decorations, bad music. There's a bunch of crap you can buy up front near the register. Again, touristy. The staff was very friendly and the service was great. When we were heading outside to sit down for dinner, one of the waiters advised us to head indoors since the mosquitoes would be coming out soon and we "came to dinner to eat- not be eaten!"
