Corn "chowder"
Leslie A.

New owners this summer and I won't go back! We always loved the Shanty but the menu and the food has changed. I had the corn chowder which was an odd, room temp corn soup. It was bland and awful. My husband had fish and chips that wasn't cooked through so batter was gooey. If you are looking for waterfront dining in Chester area, The Rope Lift never disappoints! Focsle Tavern, Kiwi Cafe and Gold Bean Cafe are always good too!

Seaside Shanty has certainly come up the ranks for its cuisine. We went here today for one of The Best Meals along the South Shore you can have. The owners Gillian and Iain have brought the restaurant to the next level with hiring a New Chef, "Jeff Wiper". This man makes one of the best pasta dishes we ever tasted. For lunch we ordered: Linguine with a white cream sauce Chicken Quesadilla's Chicken Clubhouse One order of Bruschetta First let me say, nothing in this restaurant is deep fried. It is all fresh, real meat and home made sauces. There are a lot of choices on the menu, especially if you like seafood. I will try the crab-cakes next time. The pasta dish had just the right amount of cream, accented with herbs and garlic bread on the side. This dish was rich, but not so rich that the plate was not emptied. We all wanted more! The Club House Sandwich was a real piece of grilled chicken on fresh thick bread with a small side salad. It was delicious. The Quesadilla's, well they were a big hit, we have had a few Quesadilla's before and none compared to these. I am not sure the secret they have for the outside of the shell, but this was one great Quesadilla's, chunks of chicken, peppers, onions and the right amount of cheese. It came with sour cream, salsa and a side salad. The Bruschetta, that had a little something extra in it, cucumber, which gave it a little more crunch with flavour. Excellent! Ah,yes , the Dessert. Chocolate Lava Cake!!!!!! Wow, this was a nice way to complete one of the best meals we have had. It was decadent, warm and melted in your mouth with the rich ice-cream. I am so pleased that we went back to try this wonderful restaurant along the water. It is now the first place I will recommend to friends and family that come to visit. My hat is off to Gillian & Iain for a superb establishment!

Seafood chowder

A wonderful shack by the water with absolutely killer food, a screened porch and a fresh rose on each table! We had the chowder, scallop burger and a lobster roll. Each was delicious; not too fussy but carefully prepared with wonderful ingredients. The burger and roll were accompanied by a nicely dressed small salad of micro greens. Maybe it was the setting, but we could not have asked for a better lunch We tried the coconut cream pie for dessert and it wasn't up to the rest of the meal but that was not enough to dampen our euphoria so this place still gets five stars.

The Naked Oyster - The Captain's Chowder- amazing!

The Naked Oyster is only about a year old, located in a great space along Mahone Bay's main drag,…read morewith a open and inviting atmosphere and a great patio overlooking the bay. Service was excellent, professional and quick. Maybe too quick, our appetizers arrived before our drinks. The menu is innovative but still traditional. Fish and Chips, mussels, oysters, chowder along with burgers and sandwiches, including a lobster roll on a locally made croissant. But also Pad Thai and a Bulgogi Rice Bowl. All of our dishes were wonderful. But what most impressed me is the extensive gluten free menu, complete with a fryer and gf batter for the fish & chips and fish tacos.

Fortunately, the owner of our Inn told us that The Naked Oyster recently opened and is a sister restaurant to Rebecca's. What a beautiful experience it was! It was very busy but there are several places to sit comfortably outside. The Adirondack chairs were very nice, with a view of Mahone Harbor. After a bit of a wait, we were seated. The service was excellent. I can't imagine I'll ever experience a more delicious chowder than their Captain's Chowder, a creamy clam broth with generous portions of scallops, mussels and haddock. We also had a half dozen local oysters that were perfect. High marks for the Caesar Salad too. I would put this on the "can't miss" list for the area.

If you read their website former dairy farmers turned lobster restaurant cooks on weekends. The location did not have live music on Sunday. You get the funny bib if you want and the lobster meal for $44 with mussels and unlimited salad and rolls or $39 without the mussels but unlimited salad and rolls. The lobster was rather corny in taste, they were not over cooked and pretty nice. The mussels they tasted like the standard grocery store ones- apparently from farmed source. The waiters and waitresses frequently visited to check on us and empty out buckets. The meal also came with two dessert options and self serve coffee/tea. The experience- was nice but pricey and a bit touristy. It was sadden that the unlimited salad bar actually lacked green salad or spinach- which I was sort of craving. They generally had a selection of mayonnaise based salads- look at my photo. But some selection- but I didn't see anything fun like crab salad. The machine auto request for 15% tip, so if you're not a fan of being told what to tip be sure to manually adjust it. Washroom is located in the main floor and the lower floor. Water was self serve- which I thought was odd since the servers were visiting frequently already.

Love this place. Somewhat hidden gem not so far outside Halifax. Well worth the drive. Hasn't…read morechanged at all in decades & that just great. Huge lobsters, tasty mussels and old fashioned desserts. We stop here every time we got out this way.
