Having been born and raised a little north of Truro, and then spending much of my adult life in Halifax, I really don't have much of an excuse for it taking me 40 years to get to legendary seafood purveyor Murphy's. However, I finally brought this unfortunate streak to end recently while in town for a blood donation. There was a decent crowd there for a Tuesday evening, although it thinned out over the course of my meal as I had arrived toward the latter end of the main dining hours for Murphy's prime demographic. In spite of its unassuming location in the strip mall on Esplanade, the décor goes all-in on the fishing and sea theme, with wood paneling and kitsch aplenty that transports you from the mid-century mediocrity of the building's exterior. Although I had done my menu research beforehand, I only had my options shortlisted to the fish and chips or the seafood platter. While Murphy's F&C are lauded as among the best in the province, the seafood platter includes that - and a whole lot more. My one concern was what my lowered amounts of blood and a massive meal might do to my energy levels for the drive home, but the gluttonous devil on my shoulder told me that a cola would be enough to get home. And so I went with the seafood platter, and in decent time the mound of deep-fried delight was before me. The amusing, fish-shaped plate contained a mound of clams, a handful of scallops, a few shrimp, one piece of haddock, fries, carrots and coleslaw. All of the seafood had their own unique type of breading/batter, and I appreciated that Murphy's does this instead of taking the easy way out and doing them all the same. I went for the scallops first, since I figured that they wouldn't hold up as well as time passed (and it would take some time to eat this fryer feast). Lightly dusted with flour and fried, the scallops were spectacularly succulent, with their signature sweetness, and not a hint of overcooking. They were so juicy that the breading was quickly soaked through; while they would likely fare better with a simple pan sear, tradition abounds in seafood places like this. The tail-on shrimp were firm and plump, with a heavier breading than their compatriots. The crisp exterior held up well, and the meat within was pleasantly firm, but not at all rubbery. I really enjoyed the fried clams. Covered with a chunky, loose breading that got super crisp upon frying, the clam meat itself was flavourful, sweet, and once again, perfectly cooked. Last but not least of my fishy food was the battered haddock. It likely wasn't in an ideal state when I got there, but the light, airy batter was still reasonably crisp. The fish itself broke up easily into flaky chunks with my fork, without a hint of sogginess. The fries were crispy-coated, but I doubt many celiacs are coming here. The coating did its job and they were crisp to the last fry. While the menu lists a "vegetable of the day", I feel like my forgettable steamed carrots are a frequent sight on plates at Murphy's, just as they are at (too) many old school places. The coleslaw had a creamy dressing, and while I prefer vinegar-based for better counterbalance, it still helped to mix things up for my taste buds. Both my server and the cashier at the front were impossibly nice in the way that you only really find in small towns. I was glad that Murphy's lived up to the hype, and while it won't be another 40 years before I return to Murphy's, it's probably best for the people that get my future blood donations that I don't make a habit of their hearty fish fare. read more

The tartare sauce is a perfect compliment to the fish. We had to poutine our fries (because Canada, am I right?!?) and I'm so glad we did! Honestly, the best poutine we had in Nova Scotia. Life saver on our trip from Canning to Margaree Forks in Nova Scotia. Hard to find decent place, but luckily previous reviews raving about it made the choice easy for us. We were a bit concerned navigating there - not on the main road, and not an attractive strip mall, but all this ended as soon as we stepped inside. Very friendly welcome, lightning quick service (essential while traveling) and most importantly the best Fish & Chips you can hope for. Murphy's is the kind of place where the staff knows the families of most of the customers. Not being local, I was a curiosity, and service was excellent--I was a friend of the family. The fish chowder was spiced lightly, to put the delicate flavors of the fish forward, and it was a large, delightful bowl. I ordered a three-piece fish & chips, which was a happy error, as each filet was the size of my foot. The fish was perfectly breaded, with a crisp, slightly oily but not greasy coating, and the flesh was moist, flaky and altogether toothsome. I'm going back as soon as I'm back in Truro. read more

I had the fish and shrimp with mashed potatoes and it came with cole slaw and carrots. The fish was amazing. The shrimp was standard fried shrimp. Wish they used the same batter on the shrimp. Loved the Cole slaw. The mashed potato was the biggest disappointment on the plate for me. Basic standard boxed potato. They give you butter but that didn't help. Neither did a lot of pepper. Murphy's fish and chips is a pretty good restaurant, personally it's not my favourite fish and chips in the town of Truro but it's good food for the price. I would like the fish to have less batter and more fish but the fries are really tasty so it makes up for it. The gravy as well is delicious. I have tried the seafood chowder & wasn't disappointed by it. Very good. The servers here are quick on there feet and always have a smile on there faces. The fish and chips were fried nicely. Fish is battered lightly, but not mealy flour or cornmeal coating. It's not soggy, but not Fredie's crunchy either. Fries were of good size and golden and crispy. Reasonably priced (3 pc fish and chips, $13.99). I also ordered a Clam strips platter. This was a disappointing dish however. The clam strips portion was small, and tasted like one of those pre-breaded ready-to-fry from the frozen section of a grocery store. I was expecting some juicy fat clams on my plate. This is where they lost half of a star from me. I'm so glad I ordered their Coconut cream pie for dessert. Nice big slice for less than $5! The owner later told me that this was her mother's recipe. Thoroughly impressed. Oh and this sweet lady gave it to me for free! I love this family run restaurant. From the moment I set foot inside the restaurant to the time I left, everyone was pleasant. (Imagine taking order of ~20 people, and deliver all the orders, and dealing with different ones requesting this and that.). I highly recommend this place to anyone who seek food in Truro. read more

We wanted fish and chips and Murphy's was #2 on Yelp so we checked it out. The restaurant is in a strip mail and there's lots of free parking. It's got lots of marine memorabilia so it feels good when you come in. We didn't know it's not licensed and it would have been nice to have a cold beer but it was ok. There's a strong take out business here which keeps their friendly staff on their toes. I ordered the crispy halibut and it came with two pieces of fish, fries and carrots. Sides of coleslaw and tartar sauce. The fish was juicy and tasty and the coating was crispy and tasty. My husband ordered the seafood platter and was thrilled to see all the food: large piece of fish, scallops, shrimps and clams, fries and carrots. We made it to Murphy's Fish & Chips for dinner around 7:30PM. Normally the place closes at 7PM, but it was Friday and they close at 8PM. It's located in a very long strip plaza in Downtown Truro with diagonal parking in front. The casual restaurant has a homey atmosphere with a takeout counter in front and booth seating in the nautical & hockey themed dining areas with full waitstaff service. We were seated immediately at a booth across from the bar. We ordered two large pops and since the portions are very generous here, we decided to SHARE the Seafood Platter ($19.29) plus an extra piece of Haddock ($3.80) since the platter had only one piece of Haddock. The food came out in about 10 minutes, The Seafood Platter came out very hot out of the fryer. which had battered North Atlantic Haddock, Digby clams, Scallops, Butterfly Shrimp, fries, cole slaw, steamed carrots & tartar sauce. The seafood was pretty fresh and tasty, with crispy very greasy batter. We comfortably finished the meal off and skipped dessert (coconut cream pie & butterscotch pie). The service was quick and attentive. Greasy fried seafood and good tasty portions is what you'll find at Murphy's Fish & Chips! NOTE: At 8PM, they promptly lock the doors to the place, so as we were leaving, we had to unlock the door from the inside to let ourselves out, hard to turn the small knob. In most areas of the USA, this is not legal when people are in the building due to strict fire codes and public safety. A panic bar on the door to exit would be appropriate and the door remains locked from the outside. read more

This place was a great treat! The husband and I were driving to Halifax from New Brunswick and were looking for something to eat on the way. Due to the good reviews on Yelp we decided to give Murphy's a try. If you like fish and chips, definitely give this place a try. The husband and I each ordered the fish and chips since that is what Murphy's is know for. You can pretty much get as many pieces of fish you want with fries and the price increases accordingly. I got 2 pieces and the husband got 3. 2 pieces is plenty, but if you are feeling ravenous you may want to go with 3. My husband has a big appetite and was full after eating 3 pieces. The fish is fried and comes out piping hot. It is very hard to be patient while you wait for it to cool. They serve the fish with tartar sauce and they have malt vinegar too. The breading is light and not at all greasy and the fish is nice and moist. The fries are also really good. On one visit I got my fries poutined, which meant drenched in gravy and cheese curds. The poutine was good, but a bit much since the fish is the center of the meal. We loved this place so much that we stopped here again on the way back to the U.S. through Truro. The owner and waitress that served us the first time immediately recognized us and greeted us warmly. They even gave us two pieces of pie for the road. This place is awesome! Thanks to Yelp, we stopped here for lunch on out way to Halifax. The atmosphere is quite fun - it's decorated to look like you're on a ship. It looks like an older establishment, but still comfortable and clean. The food here is really great - we happened to be here during their 20th anniversary celebration so the 2 piece fish and chips were on special for $6.99. The fish portions are quite large, lightly battered, and fried to golden perfection. Even the fries were really good too. Both the Digby clams and scallops were also really good, but the scallops were definitely better. You could tell they were fresh by their sweetness, plus they weren't overcooked either. Was in Truro one night for business. As there are no Mexican or Chinese buffets to go eat decided to have local food...even though I not like fried food. Murphy's Fish & Chips stood out on Yelp. And the whole town seems to know the place. Had to ask for driving directions twice and the minute I said restaurant I got Murphys? as a counter question. Well the restaurant did not disappoint. Yes it is as GOOD as all the reviews say no matter what sight you check. The pieces of fish were huge... had 2 3 would have been pushing it. The best thing they were not the least bit greasy.. the batter was so light and the fish so fresh and the meat just fell apart. Overall a great dining experience. Certainly will eat there again when back in Truro. The one downer NO liquor license hence no good Canadian beer to go with the fish... :( read more
