Two-piece Fish & Chips. Enough to share ... but you don't have to. Just sayin.

Be careful, because this food truck will change everything you thought you knew about fish & chips. Honestly, Bud the Spud just gifted us with the absolute best haddock we've ever had. So thick, meaty, fresh, and filling! Not oily or greasy. Just crunchy and hot and delicious. I doused mine in malt vinegar, wrapped the end in a napkin so I could dip into the tartar sauce, and I ate it by hand. No shame, guys. And the fries? The fries are something special. They have this amazing taste to them, and I suspect it has something to do with their frying process. Are they double fried? Maybe. It could also be that they're local potatoes? Whatever it is, they're addicting. They were cooked perfectly and needed no ketchup, salt, or whatever. So good, you could eat them by the handful. And I should know: I had their fries 3 times in 4 days. No judgements here. The portions are super generous, so don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach! I split a plate of 2 pieces of fish & fries with my husband. A substantial lunch for both of us that only cost $8! They also sell some canned drinks, which you'll probably need to wash down the deliciousness. And they're cash only, so either come prepared or you may need to hit up the ATM at the pizza place like we did hahah. After our first amazing experience, we had to go back. Bud the Spud ended up being our last meal in Halifax before we headed to the airport, and it was the perfect way to end our trip. And of course, we can't get those giant fresh haddock pieces and amazing chips out of our heads. Is it unreasonable to book an international flight for a food truck? Asking for a friend ...

The BEST fries in the city, nay, the WORLD.... Okay, maybe a little exaggerated, but Bud has a special place in my heart. Growing up in Halifax it is a city landmark, and for me a place my dad would take us for a summer treat. They still, after all these years and even after a change in ownership, make some delicious french fries, the service is always great and when you can go get a treat like this and a drink for under 10$...I say "why not?".... I also say "Should we get another?" or "You're NOT getting a large?"...but that is another story!

Today marked a) my first visit to Bud the Spud, and b) my first street vendor snack of the season - Huzzah! A lovely sunlit jaunt through the city today gobbled up all of my pancake breakfast energy and left me in need of a tasty, albeit unhealthy sidewalk treat. Andrew and I opted to share a medium helping, costing us $4.25. It came in a soon-to-be super greasy brown bag with a fork, and a counter of options for toppings. A dash of salt, a squeeze of vinegar and a side of ketchup seemed the perfect companions to these home cut potato strips. We saddled up on a grassy hillside, and watched the street traffic as we indulged in deep fried goodness. The patrons were plentiful and the fries abundant at this Halifax french fry pinnacle of excellence. Swing by their new location on Grafton Street, close to the Black Market, for a greasy treat next time you're in the area (just don't make a habit of it!).

HEEEEEEEE'SSS Backkkkkkkkk.. Yummy.. The all to delicious and famous Bud the Spud truck that has been a staple of my walks on Spring Garden road for years was out this weekend and boy did I enjoy it. After taking my nephew and niece to a comic function DT we stopped at Buds and ordered three large fries and three pop for $17.00 and was it worth it. All hand cut potatoes done until they are golden brown served hot in a brown paper bag that turns greasy buy the end. I have learned to close my eyes to that or eat them fast enough before it gets to noticeabale, hahaha. Topped with ketchup and a touch of salts makes for great summer snack. Make sure that you visit this location if you are here for a visit, ask anyone where the Bud truck is and they will tell you.

Offering a bit more diverse menu than Bud, I stopped by here earlier this year on my way to the Mooseheads' Memorial Cup celebration at the Grand Parade. Right off the bat, you notice how inexpensive their meals are. A one piece fish and chips is a mere $6 taxes in, and two is $8. I played it safe since this was my first meal of the day and went for the one piece. After a short wait, I plopped down on a nearby bench in front of the library. The fish was a good size and came with a lot of fries, however I didn't see any tartar sauce bottles handy and none was provided. The fish had a nice mild haddock flavour and quite crunchy batter, although it was a bit on the greasy side. The fries were hand-cut and fairly crispy for being such. All in all, pretty good bang for my buck, but not the quality that is gonna blow you away. If you do get food from any vendor by the library, I suggest you keep on walking to find somewhere else to sit. The starlings were probably the boldest I've ever encountered, with one actually flying at my plate to try and steal fries! I had to throw fries to them to keep the aggressive little jerks at bay.

If you are looking for a quick lunch at incredible prices - it is unbeatable. A one piece fish and chips is $6 and a two piece fish and chips is only $8. There is a convenient wall bordering the sidewalk in this area that acts as a nice seating area for you to relax and devour some good fish and chips.

The mixed seafood platter included a lobster claw perfectly boiled so it was fully cooked but still juicy--not rubbery as at many other places. The scallop was well-seared and nicely seasoned so as to add flavor but not to take away any natural scallop flavor. The shrimp were properly cleaned and sautéed just as taught in the culinary school I attended. And the risotto that acted as the bed for serving was rich and creamy. The different sauces added to each portion of the risotto holding the various delicacies added joyful surprises for the tastebuds. The cheesecake was marvelous and would have won the contest for best dessert of the trip, but it barely lost to Five Fishermen's PBJ Ganache, which won for its heavenly offering of chocolate Service provided by Kevin and his trainee Dan was friendly but not intrusive and entirely correct. First off, the atmosphere is lovely--refined but not stuffy--and the service was wonderful throughout. Our server was friendly and attentive, which really helped set the tone for the night. We originally wanted to try a couple of cocktails, but the prices were sky-high, so we stuck with beer instead. Thankfully, the beer selection was solid and went well with our meals. I ended up ordering the burger, mostly because the steaks were way out of our price range. That said, I was pleasantly surprised--the burger was excellent. Super juicy, with a delicious aioli and tomato jam that really elevated it. My wife had the vegetarian risotto, and while she enjoyed it once everything was mixed together, the base risotto itself was pretty bland. Not a bad dish, but definitely not worth what we paid for it. If we weren't on a budget, we might have been able to explore more of the menu--and maybe that would have changed our impression. But as it stands, this one's a 3 out of 5 for us. Nice place, but just too expensive for what we got.

The Long Version: I had heard great things about Evan's Seafood so my husband and I made a special trip to Dartmouth from Halifax on our vacation to check it out. It's right by the Alderney Ferry Landing so we took the ferry over and we were right there (ferry fare was $3 a person and it's a 15 minute ride). We got the Platter for 2 ($40) which came with 2 pieces of haddock, 4 Digby scallops, a half order of clams, half fries and half salad. We got to choose our salad (from Cesar, garden, spinach or Greek) and we got the garden salad with the dressing on the side. The amount of food was not sufficient for 2 people, imo. We had to go get a second dinner afterwards, lol. (My husband is an average-sized man and I am a much smaller than average-sized woman). Everything fit on one regular-sized dinner plate. However, the food did taste good ;) The Platter for 2 is gluten-free by default. The haddock breading was crunchy and I liked that it wasn't overly greasy. The scallops were a good size and were nicely cooked. Tender and not rubbery. The clams were good as well, although there was lots of batter on them. The fries were crispy and although not shoestring fries, I still enjoyed them. The salad was fresh and had a good variety of vegetables, but it was only a few mouthfuls. You order and pay at the counter. You tell them if you want to sit indoors or outdoors. They give you a numbered table sign and you place it wherever you want to sit. They will bring the food to you when it's ready and will clear the table when you're done, but they do not check up on you otherwise. Ambiance is...well...you're eating at a ferry terminal, lol. But if you eat outside, you're by the water. The patio was busy though, so we ate inside. I'm glad we tried it and it was fun taking the ferry over. (178)

Despite my love for fish and chips, you can get that at many an old school chip wagon, and their turkey dinner egg roll was too enticing to turn down. The line up at Roll With It was blessedly short when we were there, almost non-existent in fact. This probably had to do with them being so new on the scene and the line up of 50+ people for Ol' School Donuts which went past their trailer and may have obscured them or made people think that RWI was busy. Not so good for their business, but it worked out for my tight schedule that evening. My egg roll was served up quickly, a nice brown to the wrapper, drizzled with cranberry sauce and a little cup of gravy on the side for dipping. Inside the egg roll was a generous portion of very tender and moist turkey breast, along with a savoury dressing that gave more depth of flavour to each bite. The wrapper was amazing, one of he best I can recall having. Thin and super crisp despite the moist filling, there was no doughy layer at all on the inside. Perfection. Normally I don't go out of my way to have cranberry sauce with my turkey dinners, but I enjoyed the sweet but tangy flavours that it added, and they didn't go over the top with the portion. The gravy was decent; it didn't blow me away but it was alright and made for good dipping. The $7 price tag for an egg roll had me a bit concerned at first, but it was a hearty roll and well worth it quality wise, so don't let it put you off. Roll With It is surprisingly lax in their social media presence, so it's harder to track them down than many of their competitors in the city, but I definitely want to have more of their menu to really understand how they roll.

Most recently I have sampled the turkey dinner egg roll (which by far is a crowd fav) this is basically my childhood dream wrapped up in bite sized portions of goodness. The egg roll wrapper itself is not overwhelming rather crispy and delicate with moms fixings in the middle! It can't be beat!
