Take out not recommended. "Live" take out process is a misleading failure. First step shows the order as placed and then promises to show you next when they begin making the order and then the final step when it's ready for pick up. Perfect, I thought, I will wait and leave when they say they are starting to make it! It's a ten minute drive across town so we'll get it hot and head home. Easy. Instead I kept my eye on the order progress 20+ mins. until it simultaneously popped up as having completed the step of being made AND PICKED UP! Which was quite alarming as it never showed as being STARTED and I hadn't had a chance to even leave the house. So who picked up MY prepaid order? Better get there and figure out what happened to our dinner. We jumped in the car, driving the 10 minutes and explaining how strangely their site said our order had ALREADY been picked up, when it never even said it anyone had started to make it. What was going on?! Who picked it up? Very surprisingly the server said it was still there and that they were already aware of the way the online orders were being processed. Not live and instead showing as PICKED UP when they were ready. So end of story - After panicked drive there thinking our dinner had been given away we drove home with what turned out being soggy cold food.

It's in a neighborhood and very happening place. Service is quick compared how busy they are. Try their corn chowder for appetizer cuz it is really good. I'm picky when it comes to good burger but this place lives up to its hype. The burger was cooked right and the bun is just the right size, not too thick. It's yummy stuff. They have option for vegans and they have gluten free buns. Good burger/chicken option. Had to to try vanilla/chocolate milkshake and it was amazing. My bill was expensive because I was trying different things since I was visiting.

Peanut Butter Burger + Darrell's Fries

My expectations were high coming into Darrell's and they did not disappoint. I was extremely hesitant in ordering the Peanut Butter Burger but after reading tons of reviews vouching for it, I decided to take the risk - it was excellent! The Peanut taste is not overly powering and adds a subtle hint of sweetness to the bun which was unique - I can see why this burger continuously wins awards year after year! You must also order the Darrell fries which are super crispy potato wedges and simply a cherry on top of the meal. Reviews also rave about the milkshakes and I ordered one and it was fantastic - smooth and not overly sweet which is another worry I have when ordering milkshakes. The dine-in experience was also great - Darrell's is a diner-style restaurant which is always fun and the staff were friendly and service was faster than I expected (some reviews complain about the service) - the restaurant was full. Highly recommend checking out Darrell's if you are ever in town! Another local + student favourite.

My first time trying Darrel's as I'm not from Halifax. Came here for lunch on a weekday (small wait, as they were already slammed by 12:30) I got the Hawaiian burger. And my girlfriend got the peanut butter burger (which apparently they are well known for). We both got the Darrel fries (seasoned potato wedges), which were a hit. Both of our meals were delicious. Definitely a really nice place for a gourmet burger. The Hawaiian was solid and I enjoyed the sauce. The PB burger was unique but worth the adventurous gamble. They have a decent beer selection as well! I would come back here again and I recommend this place for a solid burger + beer.

A hidden gem I'd say! I've gone here a few times this summer, now my new favourite burger joint! Highly recommend getting 'Darrells fries' The menu is HUGE! I haven't even dug into anything but the burgers... because every time I go I can't just leave without ordering one. I got the piggy back burger. Oh my gosh, all the meat and all the sauce, it was soo good. I don't know if it's the BBQ sauce or all the delicious meat but that burger was the best so far! Can't wait to go back!

    Steak em pita

This is the Steak Em pita, it contains almost no real meat or even vegetables and the entire centre is basically folded in pita bread. The sweet potato fries are disappointing as well. The milkshakes are good

For whatever reason, I tend to forget all about Darrell's. Well, probably because I drank too much in college but still...the point is that I only make it into this south end diner about once or twice a year. After the last visit though, that's about to change. The fact that my parents still tell me stories about Darrell's from their university days is a true testament to its staying power. Armed with burgers, fries, wedges, and milkshakes, it has lasted year after year, drawing in those brave and hungry souls on a pilgrimage to the ever-famous and all-powerful Peanut Butter Burger. "Burger what now? Peanut Butter huh? Are you crazy?" Crazy like a fox, non-believers. Crazy like a fox. The peanut butter burger is an experience all of its own. If you're going for it, you need to go for it. Shut down your brain before you get there so you don't get caught up in the details before the first incredible bite. It's easy to panic when you see the fresh bun, the juicy patty, the lettuce and tomato, the mayo and relish on the bottom, and the thick smear of peanut butter on top...but trust in those who have come before you. It's absolutely out of this world. While Crystal H and I worked through ours (mine was made using a veggie patty which they'll do for any of their burger choices - awesome, huh?), we put burger theories to the test: First, flipping it upside-down DID successfully protect the optimum Bun Ratio throughout the feed. Second, inadequate napkin reserves required a quick tactical adjustment that led us to just eat the burger straight through before attempting a clean-up. Third, conversation was mutually halted to provide adequate focus and appreciation of the meal in hand. Fourth, no judgment was passed on those determined enough to move onto the deliciously spiced Darrell wedges to really guarantee a food coma worth remembering. Go forth, young grasshoppers, and feast!

Considering how many years I've lived across the street from Darrell's, it might be surprising that on average I only eat here once or twice a year. It's not that I don't like it, as is obvious by the star rating, but it just gets over looked in my mind when I'm thinking of places that I want to eat at. Maybe it's that it's actually *too* close to home and doesn't seem like eating out? Nonetheless, I visited Darrell's recently when a friend was in town as I wanted to try out the new patties that they use in their burgers. As I recall, in the past Darrell's made their own patties on site...but then froze them. It was something that boggled my mind, and even more so when the owner defended this method in an online forum. If you're working in the food business, do not use the phrase 'fresh frozen'. Just don't. It's embarrassing for you and insulting to your customers. For the past while though, Darrell's has switched to never frozen, Angus beef. While I'm extremely skeptical of the Angus brand, the never freezing it part was appealing. Honestly, I've never been wowed by Darrell's burgers in the past. Sure, they're solid and consistent, but the best burger in the city for a decade? In my mind they're a benefactor of the flaws inherent in The Coast awards in that it's a popularity contest for the masses, and smaller, lesser known establishments, or burgers in this case, fly under the radar despite their merits for such a title. Taking a seat on their spacious patio with a lovely view of...Fenwick Street....I ordered a beer to power by meal decision. While the peanut burger frenzy is well ingrained in the Haligonian consciousness and is exemplified by the numerous 'Best Burger' Coast awards, I wanted to try something a bit more basic to really let the meat shine. With this in mind I ordered the BLTCM burger, that is bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar and mayo, with Darrell fries for the side. Being that it's a post-Canada Day weekend Tuesday evening, the restaurant isn't too busy and my meal is soon in front of me, awaiting judgment. It certainly looks appealing, the cheese is nicely melted and the fries are looking hot and crispy, as always. I combine the two halves of the burgers and dig in. After a few ponderous bites, the judge and jury of my taste buds and brain combined to send me a unanimous verdict of.....'meh'. The meat doesn't take on nearly as strong as a role as it should when you're extolling its virtues on your menu. It lacks a strong beef flavour and the patty didn't get enough love from the grill and is lacking the least bit of crust or char that would give a more complex flavour to the meat. The standard toppings are as you expect, however, the light and fluffy bun is actually too fluffy and doesn't hold together particularly well, and the toppings seem too well lubricated from the 'M' of the burger's name and it's a constant battle to keep them in the bun. The Darrell fries are my go-to side here and with good reason, as they're always hot and crispy with a great flavour in the seasoning. They're thinner than most wedge fries, and this is their strong point as thicker wedges just don't get this crispy with their lower surface area-to-potato ratio. Despite an underwhelming burger, it's still not bad. It's just that it isn't going to be the best burger in the city by throwing a dollop of PB on it. On the whole though, Darrell's does have a very well rounded menu and overall experience, with the above mentioned Darrell fries, their pitas and their delicious milkshakes, to name a few. It's a laid back, neighbourhood restaurant with solid food and attentive, friendly service. I'll definitely be back in the future, but they won't be getting my vote for best burger.

The Main Specialty Burger: Peanut Butter Burger ! A Must order ! - @haithamgaafar
    Haitham G.

Darrell"s Restaurant: Two of my friends and I were starving to death and were craving something Juicy! The first thing that should pop in anyones head here in Halifax is Darrell"s restaurant. Instead of going to any Burger fast food restaurant ( would not like to state names but we all know where we go for burgers when you are munching ! :) ) and spend an average $10 dollars for a junk fast food drive thru. Darrell's is all about the speciality well made Variety of Burgers they Provide. My favourite is the Mushroom burger or the INFAMOUS peanut butter burger, a thick film of peanut butter , slice of molten cheese, and a FAT heavy well cooked Burger. That one meal with Darrell's special fries ( wedges) cooked with their spices and way is good enough for you to be full. ( and trust me, i eat a lot!) For the first time i decided order an appetizer besides my main meal ( notice i was starving) , so my friends and I ordered an appetizer called M.A.D. A combination of everything they have in the appetizer menu. With Mozza Sticks, Chicken Fingers, Fried Mushrooms, Potato Wedges & spring roll. The is no better way to warm up before the main dish . Not to forget , they give you 4 DIFFERENT Sauces with it ! One drawback is that the M.A.D dish has more Potato wedges than any other side which is just not necessary since you will get more of them in your main dish. so i advice them to throw equal quantities of all. Finally , you cannot leave the place without trying their specialty MILKSHAKES! chocolate peanut butter might sound "eww" to you but trust me it's mouthgasmicc!. Also Strawberry Milkshakes are amazing. Follow me for more review of Halifax restaurants/bars: Twitter: @haithamgaafar Yelp: Haitham G

My first experience with Darrell's was burger week. A burger with peanut butter and bacon on top for just $5, how could it go wrong? The burger and hype did not disappoint. The Peanut butter burger was more than I expected; it was better. Prepare to get a little messy and the peanut buttery goodness drizzles down your hands. And of course I could not just get plain ole' fries, I got the Darrell's fries, and they were such a compliment to the burger. The whole menu sounds great, but I haven't been able to bring myself to order something different. Every time we're there, the service is great, and I haven't had a long wait time for my food.

The Darrells Peanut Butter Burger is out of this world!
    Sir E.

Sir E and his accomplice were craving a burger. Darrell's was down the street. The menu is classic diner, with milkshakes and hangover grease done right. The peanut butter burger is famous and well reviewed. As a man who likes to eat a lot Sir E had to try it. The plate was hearty, the burger was succelent, and prepared to perfection! The peanut butter brought out a new creamy dimension in the burger realm. Darrell could very well become a good friend o' mine. - Sir E.

This trip was different because the food was incredible. That was the best cheeseburger I've had in the HRM. Even the bun was perfect to hold it all together. The first place I've found that knows how to cook home fries they're crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Both of our meals,my wife got a poutine and I got the cheeseburger with fries and we split a pop came to less than $21.00 that's right two can dine on fresh food for less than a million. The woman that was serving us was very polite and really wanted to know if we liked our food. She made it a great experience. The restaurant looks like every other fast food place on the inside, but it was clean. A secret that can't be beat, a homemade large burger for that price I'll be back, my new favourite burger joint.

    Downtown Halifax

A good downtown food scene has lots of different options - different ethnicities, styles and price…read morepoints - to cater to the equally varied tastes and needs of people. I was wanting a quick bite before meeting coworkers for a drink, and Iron Rooster fit the bill. The store was quiet for a Friday evening, and the lone staff member doubled as both server and cook. The menu is somewhat lean (figuratively speaking, as it's more vegetable-adverse than KFC!), with familiar fried chicken items like wings, drumsticks, house-made popcorn chicken, strips and a chicken burger. Sides are equally deep fried and brown. I wish the menu would lean more into more obviously Asian versions of fried chicken, but a couple such options do show up, with the Beijing chicken wrap and a curry chicken bowl (effectively karaage don). I ended up going with Combo Meal A, which gives you the option of a chicken burger or the Beijing wrap, and fries or a couple chicken wings. Unsurprisingly, I went for the wrap and did not double down on chicken, opting for the fries instead. I was eating-in, so my food came as it was ready. The fries came in the now very common, mini-deep-fryer basket, with a decent amount of golden brown fries filling it. They were crispy-coated, so a bit of a cop-out in this golden age of hand-cut fries, but hey, they were still wonderfully crisp, hot and fluffy! Oh, and I got a garlic seasoning on them as well, so they had some more oomph. The wrap soon followed, rolled up in paper that has some very cute branding! It wasn't huge, with a couple chicken strips, pickled cucumber, green onion, and a sweet and salty, teriyaki-esque sauce. The flavours all kind of worked though, and the pliable wrap (not sure what its origins were, as it seemed too stretchy to be a standard wheat tortilla) held up well. The chicken's crispness suffered from the sauce and self-steaming, but these things happen. My second visit had me stopping in before a trivia night with friends, and this time I went for the half-sized portion of Cornish hen, once again getting fries for my side. There were a few takeout orders ahead of me in the queue, but it wasn't too long of a wait. My basket of fries came out first, and the crispy coating and garlic seasoning were just as good as last time. It was a bit longer for my chicken, but it was worth it. The batter was good and crispy, the meat tender and juicy, and it was an ongoing battle between my hunger and self-preservation instinct from the hot-out-of-the-fryer chicken. Interestingly, the chicken is cooked as one solid piece, as being broken down into its constituent parts would have made for a better coating-to-meat ratio, and it would cook quicker too. My chosen side sauce of honey garlic added further flavour and a contrasting hit of sweetness. Service on both visits was very friendly and helpful. Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch for fried chicken, and Iron Rooster has got your fix.
