I have been here several times and although I am not a fan of battered wings, their lime- habanero…read morewings are good and hot. Now comes my complaint, we went to eat between World Junior games the other night and were told to grab a seat wherever. We immediately found a couple of seats but we're immediately told we could not sit there as all tables were saved for large groups. This wrong. We would have happily shared the six person table with a group of four but no! So we moved on. Same story tonight, so this place may have burned their opportunity to have my business in the future.

As part of some birthday celebrations with a friend, a few of us stopped by HFX Sports before…read morehitting a Mooseheads game. HFX is the megalithic sports bar which replaced the Halinfamous Palace. Gone are the shady bathroom going ons and general shadiness after a coat of paint and what I can only assume is a near illegal amount of bleach. Walking into the bar, you get the feel that they haven't completely left the club atmosphere behind - dimly lit other than the various neon lights and plentiful TVs, there's a weird vibe that for better or worse isn't your typical sports bar. Being a game night, there was a good sized crowd here and we were limited to their special events menu, which wasn't incredibly constraining and I can appreciate that they'd want to keep things as streamlined in the kitchen as possible when they're expecting to be slammed. Food wise, I was pulled in by the siren song of a couple creative apps - the mac and cheese wontons, and the Philly cheese steak spring rolls - which I got for the table to share and also ordered the 'Busy Bee' burger which came topped with cheddar, onion rings and honey BBQ sauce on a brioche bun. Naturally, the beer was flowing as well. We didn't have to wait long at all, even with the crowd. The apps came first; the wontons were fairly plentiful, with 10 or 12 bite-sized carb-bombs. They were on the small side however, so there wasn't much mac and cheese inside. They would have been much better if they were larger, to have a more distinctive contrast between the creamy mac and cheese and the crispy, fried wonton. The marinara that came with them was fine, although with the crazy lighting, I wasn't sure what it was until I re-read the menu. The Philly cheese steak rolls had very crispy and flaky wraps, but went downhill as you went inside to meat that was noticeably dry and lacking in cheese. They did have a good beef flavour mind you, and the chopped onion and green pepper added some sharpness and depth to the flavour profile. The BBQ sauce on the side was like a mild steak sauce, which normally isn't my bag, but it helped the dry rolls go down. The Busy Bee weighs in with a respectable 6oz patty, and had a hearty beef flavour, but had a very unfortunate mushy texture. The flavour of the whole package was alright, and though I'm not normally a fan of BBQ sauces on anything, let alone hamburgers, as I find them to cloying and I don't like the fake smoke flavour, this one was OK. The house salad that I had in lieu of fries (to ward off complete self-disgust with my diet) was fairly fresh tasting for being out of season, and a tangy vinaigrette helped cut through the fat of my other food. I also snagged a wing from the birthday boy. The battered wings came with the sauce of the side, which I have recently become a convert to. It was a reasonable size and had a good, crispy batter, but the chicken itself had a less than pleasant texture, either from freezing or needing another minute or two in the fryer. Serving my boyfriendly duties, I got to finish off my girlfriend's fries. They came in a cute, but manly, mini bucket which must serve the double duty of both presentation and portion control for the kitchen staff. They seemed like your run-of-the-mill, skin on, crispy-coated, from frozen fries, but they were still crispy and tasty at the end of the meal, so I don't have any actual complaints despite that build-up of adjectives. All in all, it seems like a good place to catch a game, or many games. That being said, the kitchen needs to step up their game if they want to be worthy of the high end bar prices that they lean towards. At $20 + tax for a pitcher of Keith's, you're going to feel it in the wallet if you're camped out here for a while.

This review is for the Bayers Lake location…read more 1) Lost 2 stars for poor customer service and lack of information: We walked in at 7:00 p.m. to try their Friday trivia night. (We had called to book a table for trivia and when we walked in, they said no need to reserve--it doesn't get that busy. That should have been a warning.) We sat down for our meal. By 8:30, the first round of trivia had only concluded (this is considered slow--more on that below). That's when the server came by and grumpily asked if one of the people our party was 19 or over (he's 18). When we said no, she said he had to be out of there by 9:00. She didn't think to tell us this at 7:00, knowing we were there for trivia? No signage anywhere on the premises saying "Patrons under 19 have to leave by 9:00 p.m."? What kind of short-sighted policies do they have here? They were happy to take our money and not tell us that we'd have to leave by 9:00, knowing that we wouldn't be able to finish trivia. 2) Lost 1 star for slow and uninteresting trivia. Questions were read straight from a card by a host who didn't seem interested and didn't engage with his audience. He read each question slowly about three times, hence the s-l-o-w pace where it took 30 minutes for one round that didn't even have audio or video clues. The lack of players should have been our clue that this trivia event is not a success. 3) Lost 1 star for loud, eclectic ambience--this place doesn't know what it wants to be. The trivia was taking place at the same time as music on the speaker and sports TV were playing, all jumbled together at the same time. Maybe that's why the host had to repeat each question slowly several times. But hey, if you want to watch baseball while answering questions about Thomas the Tank Engine and listening to Mumford and Sons simultaneously, this is the place for you. If the food were good, it could save this place, but nope, just mediocre fare that could be served at any pub. And don't get me started on the quick little brown movement we saw out of the corner of our eye, darting under the dining tables. We know it's common for restaurants to have this problem, but flagrantly in the dining room while we were eating makes it easy to warn everyone we know never to come here. Solid nope, nope, nope for this place.

They've got a great selection of craft beers and cocktails--I went with the Purple Haze and really enjoyed it. Refreshing, balanced, and not overly sweet. For food, I ordered the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich, and wow--it was incredible. Super flavourful, perfectly cooked, and impressively held together even with the runny (and delicious) egg on top. My wife went with the New Orleans pasta, and we were really impressed by how accommodating the kitchen was with her dietary restrictions. They happily swapped out the chicken and ham for shrimp, and the dish still came out beautifully done. You can tell the chef really loves what they do--it absolutely shows in the quality and care of the food. It's easy to see why this place is a local favourite. Sometimes you go somewhere without a clue what to expect and you leave feeling disappointed…read more.. This is not one of those times. As a pre-show get together for the Canada Heritage moments at the Carbon Arc (note to self: remember that review too), Meegan and I met some fellow yelpers here for some nosh and wine. We were the first to arrive (around 5ish) and if I can give anyone a little piece of advice about going to check this place out for the first time let it be this - that was the perfect time to be there. There were only a few patrons inside so we were able to get some great service (both fast and super friendly). As it is a music bar and grill they seem to have an extensive list of upcoming events but when we went all was quiet. While the menu can seem a little pricey we happened to go in during happy hour (4-6). Appetizers are 2 for 1, house wine $5 = Happy Tara! There seems to be a lot of talk about the grilled cheese sandwich this place serves up but Meegan and I opted to for the lamb lollipops ($10ish), the torpedo shrimp ($9ish but remember we were there for happy hour) and then shared the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich with Avocado ($11ish). It was plenty of food for the both of us and I really thought everything was very good. The house red was nothing to shake a stick at either (and three glasses later it was even better). I loved the look of the place. Dark wood and plenty of seating without feeling like you're bumping into one another. Located on the corner of Argyle and Prince it's looks to be an awesome place to hang out especially on the patio during the summer. If you go let me know how the grilled cheese sandwich is.

The staff here are chipper, genuine, and on the ball as well. For vegans the frites are THE BEST FRIES IN THE CITY. HANDS DOWN. Those long, skinny, salty sticks of deliciousness would grace my palate thrice weekly in my own personal foodie heaven. Also, the spinach salad with the pecans, mango, and ginger soy dressing will not disappoint. It is flavourful and filling, and I would bet that it's also gluten free ! Bonus points :D I always ask how the other dishes are when I hear someone has recently gone to The Carleton. I have heard nothing but enthusiastic reviews of the other more carnivorous dishes they offer. The best part at The Carleton is truly the music. Everyone is politely denied the use of their chatterboxes while the performer(s) are doing their thing. This way everyone wins, we are all graced with auditory perfection and love it all the more. Heck, there are even great speakers in the bathrooms so if you have to visit in the middle of a show you won't miss a beat! Genius! I appreciate how particular The Carlton is when they choose their musical performers. It seems clear that anyone who graces that beautiful stage is the cream of the crop. I love buying random tickets for artists I have never heard of before because it always blows my mind and I walk away at the end of the evening with a new favourite! All in all, if you haven't gone- GO. If you're humming and hawwing about going again- YOU'RE SILLY. Just buy the ticket and dedicate yourself to an awesome evening at The Carleton!
