Got the special of the week which was a Greek style sandwich. Flavor was great and the chicken was tender. Fried Brussels were also very good.

This is a Chicken Poutine that they forgot to put chicken in....

The positive: The poutine does tastes good The negatives: First off I ordered a Chicken Poutine, there is no chicken at all in this tiny poutine. It came in what I can only describe as a muffin container. This chickenless chicken poutine costs $12.65, seriously. I'm still baffled how a chicken place forgets the freaking chicken!

Cute little spot, great for sharing. We tried the real deal meal for 2. We choose Brussels sprouts and Roasted potatoes. Both were really yummy. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the gravy was standard yummy gravy. Would recommend. Price was ok.

I rolled into the chkn chop at like 9:30 and I was worried I was be that guy.. that guy comes right before closing and is a total inconsiderate asshole (you know who you are, and what you are). We ordered the pulled chicken sandwich with a side of beans on the recommendation of the front counter team. I love asking people what they recommend, you get to try new things.. and bets are, they've eaten almost everything at the Reston they work at, and you get the best of the best. Anyways, the chicken. Oh my gawd. Just perfect. We split the sandwich and it was amazing. I loved the cilantro on it and pickled something or another, was so good. I could have just eaten the chicken pieces with my bare hands. Hold the bread. I also had the slushy margarita. So much yes. The space is really cute, I love it, casual, cool and still a little fancier than a diner. The service was amazing. The front house staff were funny and just the right amount of chatty banter. All the chkn chop crew is doing it right, I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu!

I like the decor, local draft beer on tap, heavenly charcoal smell and killer chicken graffiti on the outside- but the chicken has no flavour. Where is the garlic, onion and piriri? It was also $15 and change after tax for a chicken sandwich and a small side of coleslaw. Pretty expensive for a to-go lunch. The pickled onion and carrot on the sandwich seemed more like Mexican than Portuguese. I will say the chicken was very moist. The staff seemed genuinely friendly and these guys are a much better addition than the chain donut store that was here before. Overall not bad, but I might go again and try something different; maybe it was just the sandwich. I can't help but think a KC BBQ style joint would have been a better fit here. I just don't see this place lasting.

Yummy yummy yummy! My husband and I split a half chicken dinner with two sides and a small poutine. The paper based menu clearly describes the two different poutines and whether chicken is included or not. We had a lovely meal and I have some chicken and green beans left over for tomorrows lunch. Corn is not generally my prefer vegetable but theirs is really good and I would order it again. The drinks were a little pricey but also delicious.

This was an okay spot. My chicken caesar sandwich was yummy. The pretzel bun was so good. Sauce was garlicky and was terrific. Staff was polite, charming and helpful. It only gets a 2 star because the quarter chicken dinner was flavourless. The seasoning on the skin was okay but the meat itself was boring and bland. The chicken needed a good brine. And because the whole menu accept one item is that bland ass chicken. Over all I wouldn't go back

I will give here a 3.5 based on a visit in January 2019 before they had the fire, and a 2nd visit in October after they re-opened. Usually no problem to get parking in the small lot of the strip mall that this place is in. Friendly staff. Small inside with seating for maybe 20 people tops, so I imagine many people get take-out at meal times. But luckily both visits I arrived just before noon, so was able to get a table. Chalk board menu at the cash register where you order and pay in advance and they give you a number to bring to your table. Licensed with some local beers as well as cans of your basic domestics. Lots of natural light, casual, cute vibe overall. My first visit, I tried the daily special at the time of some kind of Thai chicken sandwich which I remember enjoying a lot, despite it being quite big and I couldn't finish half my fries. The 2nd visit I got their McChkn ($12 fried chkn, McChkn sauce, iceburg, onions) which I found decent but not sure I'd get again. Found the chicken itself may have been slightly overcooked as it was hard to chew, the sauce wasn't as distinct or flavorable as it could have been, and it was pretty messy to eat. The pros, it was also huge, and still overall good for someone who just likes that sort of thing. The side of potato salad was served in a stainless steel tin, heavy on the dill, large potato chunks, and not bad. Again, just a personal preference of mine to have my potato salad a bit mushier, not as harsh flavored). My friend really enjoyed his Hot Chkn ($10 pulled chkn, green beans, cheeze curds, gravy). It was funny that I hadn't been paying attention to what he ordered and at the table said "oh look, yours has cheese curds" to which he replied "no, that's pieces of chicken".. so I tasted one, and it was the cheese curds, which he didn't even notice were on the sandwich at all. But he liked it a lot overall with the large portion of well done fries. We each had a beer to make the meal incredibly filling, on top of splitting one of their big cookies for dessert, which was good. I definitely will be back, but think next I will try the tacos, and maybe a poutine.

This burger was amazing!!! The service was quick and the staff were friendly. The space is small but tables opened up quickly. I would have like a bit more chicken on the burger but overall it was worth the $14

I assaulted these fries with my mouth, I'm lucky they didn't press charges.

The Rotisserie chicken and spicy tacos were delicious. And a nice Kentucky (bourbon) Lemonade Slushy too.

McJolly Filipino Fast Food - Combo Meal #3 - fried chicken with rice, corn and gravy

McJolly Filipino Fast Food

(2 reviews)

Downtown Halifax

Filipino food is probably my favourite international cuisine, with its delicious mix of Asian and…read moreSpanish flavours, and while their fast food is much more American-ized than their more traditional stuff, it's its own little niche that deserves some love too! McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

Iron Rooster - Beijing wrap

Iron Rooster

Downtown Halifax

A good downtown food scene has lots of different options - different ethnicities, styles and price…read morepoints - to cater to the equally varied tastes and needs of people. I was wanting a quick bite before meeting coworkers for a drink, and Iron Rooster fit the bill. The store was quiet for a Friday evening, and the lone staff member doubled as both server and cook. The menu is somewhat lean (figuratively speaking, as it's more vegetable-adverse than KFC!), with familiar fried chicken items like wings, drumsticks, house-made popcorn chicken, strips and a chicken burger. Sides are equally deep fried and brown. I wish the menu would lean more into more obviously Asian versions of fried chicken, but a couple such options do show up, with the Beijing chicken wrap and a curry chicken bowl (effectively karaage don). I ended up going with Combo Meal A, which gives you the option of a chicken burger or the Beijing wrap, and fries or a couple chicken wings. Unsurprisingly, I went for the wrap and did not double down on chicken, opting for the fries instead. I was eating-in, so my food came as it was ready. The fries came in the now very common, mini-deep-fryer basket, with a decent amount of golden brown fries filling it. They were crispy-coated, so a bit of a cop-out in this golden age of hand-cut fries, but hey, they were still wonderfully crisp, hot and fluffy! Oh, and I got a garlic seasoning on them as well, so they had some more oomph. The wrap soon followed, rolled up in paper that has some very cute branding! It wasn't huge, with a couple chicken strips, pickled cucumber, green onion, and a sweet and salty, teriyaki-esque sauce. The flavours all kind of worked though, and the pliable wrap (not sure what its origins were, as it seemed too stretchy to be a standard wheat tortilla) held up well. The chicken's crispness suffered from the sauce and self-steaming, but these things happen. My second visit had me stopping in before a trivia night with friends, and this time I went for the half-sized portion of Cornish hen, once again getting fries for my side. There were a few takeout orders ahead of me in the queue, but it wasn't too long of a wait. My basket of fries came out first, and the crispy coating and garlic seasoning were just as good as last time. It was a bit longer for my chicken, but it was worth it. The batter was good and crispy, the meat tender and juicy, and it was an ongoing battle between my hunger and self-preservation instinct from the hot-out-of-the-fryer chicken. Interestingly, the chicken is cooked as one solid piece, as being broken down into its constituent parts would have made for a better coating-to-meat ratio, and it would cook quicker too. My chosen side sauce of honey garlic added further flavour and a contrasting hit of sweetness. Service on both visits was very friendly and helpful. Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch for fried chicken, and Iron Rooster has got your fix.

R&B Kitchen - Chicken and waffles

R&B Kitchen

(3 reviews)

When Halloween came around and my wife and I were looking for some easy eats before the onslaught…read moreof trick-or-treaters, admittedly, R&B Kitchen was not our first choice. Unfortunately, many other people had a similar first choice as us - pizza - and 40 demoralizing, failed calls to Yeah Yeahs nudged us toward our backup plan. Ordering was easy on Skip, with about ten options to choose from. The offerings are mainly Caribbean - oxtail and jerk chicken-based dishes figure prominently - as well as some Southern influences. We ordered a mix of things to try as much as possible, going for the jerk chicken, ox tail, and Canadian loaded mac and cheese. Our order was ready very quickly, barely longer than the drive to get it. Even with said drive, we probably got our food an hour quicker than a slammed pizza place would have been. It's hard to say which dish was the clear winner, as as all were well executed, but the loaded mac and cheese got the most oohs and ahhs. Topped with a hefty dose of Brothers pepperoni, bacon, ground beef, mushrooms and green pepper, it was like a works pizza on mac and cheese, and it definitely worked! The jerk chicken had a really good pop of flavour from its complex mix of savoury seasonings, including a zesty heat that definitely made itself known, but didn't set off any smoke detectors. The meat was deftly cooked as well, with the thigh and two drums tender but not dry and overcooked. A generous serving of rice and peas, coleslaw and cornbread rounded out a container that was on the edge of needing further structural support! My choice was the ox tail - I love the fatty, beefy mix of meat and sauce, and the pinwheel-like tail bones are weird and fun to me. R&B's ox tail was a very good rendition, checking every box. Some very large beans showed up to bulk up the dish even more, and rice and peas soaked up all the saucy goodness. R&B likely cheats a bit with their cornbread and adds flour, but it was light, fluffy and delicious, so hard to complain about. On my next time darkening their doorway, I was dining solo and opted for the BBQ ribs. When you pick up a takeout container and it's got some heft to it, you know you're in for a hearty meal, and while this dish might not check a lot of boxes on Canada's Food Guide, you're not going to be hungry afterward! Three large ribs were nestled on top of a heap of mac and cheese, with a dark glaze that was savoury and sweet - but not too sweet. The ribs were meaty, and bites came away in easy chunks, signaling a spot on cook. Not to be outdone, the baked mac and cheese was well-executed and while not as over-the-top as the loaded version, it was still a great example of this comfort food classic. The green beans were a tasty surprise because I didn't know that they not only had garlic in them, but they had a *lot* of garlic in them. Vampires take heed! A large chunk of cornbread completed the meal with a golden brown crust on top, and pleasant crumb. It wasn't quite as fluffy as a cornmeal-only cornbread, but I can't begrudge them some wheat flour to help hold things together. Consider this review a song of praise, because R&B Kitchen is hitting all the right notes, and next time we order, they'll be second fiddle to no one.

I kept things as simple as it gets, getting their Classic chicken sandwich, and upgrading to a combo with a drink and fries for an additional $5. I didn't do any research before coming by, so I was happy to see that they had milkshakes and I eagerly upgraded my drink to get a strawberry milkshake. Childhood nostalgia satisfied: check! There was a smattering of other customers before and after me on a relatively quiet Monday evening, and I got my food quickly. The sandwich is bare bones, and it might have been worth the upgrades to one of the other sandwiches so it didn't look so brown and sad. That said, even with just pickles and the "Turbo sauce", it was a solid fried chicken sandwich! I always prefer dark meat for its flavour and juiciness, but the thick cut of breast held its own. It was a big piece of chicken, eclipsing the bun it was in and the batter had a good crispness to it. The Turbo sauce was your standard burger/sandwich sauce of mayo and miscellaneous condiments mixed together, and added some further richness and a little more flavour, while a few pickles brought some acidity to cut through it all. The milkshake was just about everything you could want in a standard strawberry milkshake - thick, but not too thick, fruity, and a taste-induced teleportation back in time to dinners at diners with my mom. The sack of fries was HUGE - there's a definitely a couple potatoes' worth of fries in there! They were from-frozen, but were crisp and so plentiful, it's impossible to complain. Turbo Chicken is throwing down with more well-known international chains, but with better pricing, variety and quality products, I'd come back for another quick bite anytime.
