McJolly Filipino Fast Food - Combo Meal #3 - fried chicken with rice, corn and gravy

Filipino food is probably my favourite international cuisine, with its delicious mix of Asian and…read moreSpanish flavours, and while their fast food is much more American-ized than their more traditional stuff, it's its own little niche that deserves some love too! McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

Ok so the KFC business has been crazy since Covid- now you can't call the store to order- it most…read morebe prepaid- that's fine though. Anyway I was not much of a fan of the quinpool rd location in the past regardless, but now based on location they choose the closest one in the app- I will say I've had pretty good customer service experiences with the store when I had a concern as the number is right there- the app itself could use some work- They usually always include an extra piece of chicken and yes may be to size but that's always a nice little find- and today I saw free poutine with an over $25 order on the app- and it didn't give a promo code or say just include it to be comped so when I last looked it says offer applied, when I verified with the store it wasnt there so the customer service number was the store they provided and the person didn't know- anyway long story short they applied it but informed it needs to be added as in add the deal button which I didn't see at first so that was very nice- a d the lady on the phone was greatly helpful- and the chicken looked good from the pieces to the tenders to the popcorn chicken for me and my family.

You have to order online". I asked again about the order and he said he doesn't have any orders then he asked someone else who confirmed it was on the way. Terrible service. The food was obviously sitting around for a while. The chicken was super dry and chewy. Won't be ordering from here again.

The room is cozy and classy, with darkly-painted wainscoting, warm wallpaper and just enough lighting to set the mood without straining the eyes of its older clientele (re. me) . That's not to say it's all blue hairs here, but there's definitely a different crowd here than the latest, trendy spot. Looking to satiate our hunger after a long day, the menu had a lot of tempting options for my wife and I. They've got a commendable handful of bar bites - pickles, pickled eggs, sweet and spicy nuts, and a few assorted carbs - but we were feeling something more substantial. The mains are probably the most traditional part of the menu, which utilizes the plus sign instead of an ampersand or the word 'and', so they stay cool that way. I kid, and I dig traditional pub food; all the more so when it gets a more creative touch in composition and execution than your typical pub, which Quinn's menu definitely seems to be going for. I went for the minced beef + cheese pie, while my other half chose the bangers + mash. The ol' plus sign really reads better on a menu. With a limited crowd, it didn't take long for our food to arrive. Savoury pastries can be a double-edged sword, and since my youthful days of microwaved Pizza Pockets (TM) (I've grown to bake them as the mature adult with discerning tastes that I am), I have learned nothing. A hungry man is not a patient one, and I have the mouth burns to prove it. The menu states that the pie is made from beef blade, caramelized onions and an HP + cheddar sauce, but when this all combined in the hot mess of a pie, while delicious, it mainly came off as rich and salty. Not fake gravy salty, but still pretty salty. And this is coming from an avowed lover of salty foods. I appreciated that the roasted garlic mashed potatoes didn't pull any punches and had a big hit of vampire repellent. The charred broccoli was a subtle green flag - steamed and boiled veg (often from frozen) is a telltale sign of a restaurant that isn't even trying, so even this small tweak to the preparation makes a meaningful difference. My wife's meal was quite similar to mine, but two large sausages took the place of my pie. Chorizo sausages tagged in for whatever the standard British sausage is, and the flavour and mild hit of spice was a welcome upgrade. Service was easy going and attentive throughout our meal. Quinpool Road has an eclectic assortment of restaurants and having a pub that's putting in some effort is a great little anchor for the neighbourhood's food scene.
