I have been eating damned good Southern U.S. BBQ for most of my life (like old Mr. Moses selling racks of ribs out of his old smoker on a trailer good), and I can tell these ribs were steamed, not smoked. They were fatty and soft/mushy. A good, long-smoked rib has the fat rendered down and still leaves a "bite." I mistakenly ordered a rack, thinking I could make two meals out of it. Nope. I was able to get through half, and that will be it. The sauces were good, and I enjoyed the potato salad. It had a bit of a tang, and I wasn't mad about it. The BBQ beans were okay. No issues with any of the other food the family ordered.

The fully open kitchen is a nice touch, and I regret not having a view of it, but that's what happens when you show up last! The menu has an assortment of Latin American dishes like yucca fries, empanadas and tacos, as well as local/contemporary fare that gets a Latin touch like aguachile oysters, bravas Brussels sprouts and adobo-roasted cauliflower. My wife and I went for a mix of big and small plates, ordering the beef empanadas, Brussels sprouts, and the cauliflower. For an adult beverage, I had the Oaxaca old fashioned. It was adequate cocktail, although a smokier mezcal would have made it more memorable. Someone who I assume was a manager had spotted the gifts on the table and not only brought over a shot for the birthday girl and her partner, but for the whole table! While it was a low ABV liqueur, it was a lovely gesture and savvy business move. We must have arrived in between seatings, as despite a fairly full dining room, all our dishes came out surprisingly quickly and all together. I started out with the smaller plates. Some variation of fried Brussels sprouts has been a common sight on restaurant menus for a decade, but hey, it works! Bar Sofia's iteration gets a dose of savoury and tomato-y bravas sauce, and also gets topped with a colourful assortment of thinly sliced veg - radish, carrot, pickled red onion, jalapeno, and some sprigs of cilantro. The sauced-up sprouts lost a good bit of their crispness, but the bravas sauce was undeniably tasty, with a balance of richness and acidity. The veg accoutrements added welcome splashes of colour and texture. The empanadas come two to an order, so perfect for sharing with my wife! The hearty beef was cooked to perfection, and the olives and egg completed the traditional filling. The pastry itself was supple and flaky, with a golden brown and crisp exterior. When we swapped dishes, I was glad to get my hands on the cauliflower. The generous portion of half a head of roasted brassica came with rice, a cashew crema and the aforementioned veg toppings. The char of the cauliflower played well with the nutty sauce, and although a bit repetitive, the veg accoutrements brightened up the flavour profile. While Bar Sofia's origins as a Toronto-based restaurant company's idea to fill the commercial space at Queen's Marque isn't exactly a stamp of authenticity, they are bringing some dishes that aren't common in Halifax (other than the Brussels sprouts). I enjoyed my meal there and it's a fun vibe, but there was no 'wow' factor for me. I'm sure I'll tackle more of the menu and patio some day, but as I continue to catch up on the Halifax food scene, I'm not rushing back either.

I'd been wanting to try them out for a while, but their usual home base of Dartmouth and my schedule this summer had not been working in my favour. The food stars finally aligned though when I was working one sunny weekend and Jamaica Lee was one of the trucks at Brunch at Bishop's. Once my work was taken care of for the moment, I made the jaunt up to Bishop's. Being around 2pm, there wasn't anyone lined up, so things went quickly. They had a small set of offerings: jerk or curry chicken with rice and peas, ox tail, beef patties, and "festival", which I would later learn were cornbread fritters. Thanks, Google. I went for the jerk chicken meal with rice and peas ($10), and tacked on a beef patty ($5) to sample some more of their wares while I had the opportunity. It just took a couple of minutes for everything to get packaged up while I took in the waterfront sights and sounds and chatted with the cool cats at Halifax Press. Back in the office under fluorescent lighting, I dug into my significant pile of food. The peas in the rice definitely looked more like red broad beans, but the name didn't matter much as it was tasty stuff; lightly seasoned, perfectly cooked rice that was even better with the jerk chicken sauce. The chicken was pleasantly plentiful - four hunks of drumstick and thighs, with a great jerk seasoning that was spicy but not oppressively so, and a light dash of sauce for some sweetness and more depth of flavour to the infamously complex jerk spices. I had a small bit of my co-worker's oxtail as well, and while I had the poor luck of choosing a piece that was more bone and fat, and less meat, the sauce had a fantastic mix of tomato and beef flavour. The beef patty was an impressive hue of orange, and was a decent size, although five bucks was kind of pushing it for something like this. The meat was heavily spiced and packed a good kick to it, but sadly the flavour of the beef itself got lost among the spice and other seasonings. I like a good beef patty, but probably wouldn't go for this again, saving my five notes for something else. Jamaica Lee is doing it right by keeping the menu concise, and the jerk chicken spicy, delicious and approachable. I'm glad I finally got to try them out, and will be keeping them in mind in the future for all of my jerked meat needs. PS. They really need to drop the "Style" from their name. Jamaican cuisine varies from household to household, and I don't think there's any/many people that are going to call BS on their food not being authentic Jamaican food.

It has an amazing aroma and I just can't get enough of it! The peas (beans), are not something I normally would eat, but they taste so good in this rice recipe that I love them. I'm hoping to get that coconut spice cake one of these times if its there when I'm in, for now I got the rum cake which was good. I put a little caramel sauce on it when I got home. If I worked downtown, I'd probably eat here every day because the tuna and cream cheese on swirly rye just turns my crank. They also offer healthy snacks all made up with veggies and dip, and real fruit like apples - apples! - for the downtown crowd who are sick of reaching for Timbits and chips at 3 o'clock.
