Noodles were very good-fresh ingredients. Vegetable egg rolls were excellent-thin wrapper and very crispy. Friendly and quick service.

Iron Rooster - Beijing wrap

Iron Rooster

A good downtown food scene has lots of different options - different ethnicities, styles and price…read morepoints - to cater to the equally varied tastes and needs of people. I was wanting a quick bite before meeting coworkers for a drink, and Iron Rooster fit the bill. The store was quiet for a Friday evening, and the lone staff member doubled as both server and cook. The menu is somewhat lean (figuratively speaking, as it's more vegetable-adverse than KFC!), with familiar fried chicken items like wings, drumsticks, house-made popcorn chicken, strips and a chicken burger. Sides are equally deep fried and brown. I wish the menu would lean more into more obviously Asian versions of fried chicken, but a couple such options do show up, with the Beijing chicken wrap and a curry chicken bowl (effectively karaage don). I ended up going with Combo Meal A, which gives you the option of a chicken burger or the Beijing wrap, and fries or a couple chicken wings. Unsurprisingly, I went for the wrap and did not double down on chicken, opting for the fries instead. I was eating-in, so my food came as it was ready. The fries came in the now very common, mini-deep-fryer basket, with a decent amount of golden brown fries filling it. They were crispy-coated, so a bit of a cop-out in this golden age of hand-cut fries, but hey, they were still wonderfully crisp, hot and fluffy! Oh, and I got a garlic seasoning on them as well, so they had some more oomph. The wrap soon followed, rolled up in paper that has some very cute branding! It wasn't huge, with a couple chicken strips, pickled cucumber, green onion, and a sweet and salty, teriyaki-esque sauce. The flavours all kind of worked though, and the pliable wrap (not sure what its origins were, as it seemed too stretchy to be a standard wheat tortilla) held up well. The chicken's crispness suffered from the sauce and self-steaming, but these things happen. My second visit had me stopping in before a trivia night with friends, and this time I went for the half-sized portion of Cornish hen, once again getting fries for my side. There were a few takeout orders ahead of me in the queue, but it wasn't too long of a wait. My basket of fries came out first, and the crispy coating and garlic seasoning were just as good as last time. It was a bit longer for my chicken, but it was worth it. The batter was good and crispy, the meat tender and juicy, and it was an ongoing battle between my hunger and self-preservation instinct from the hot-out-of-the-fryer chicken. Interestingly, the chicken is cooked as one solid piece, as being broken down into its constituent parts would have made for a better coating-to-meat ratio, and it would cook quicker too. My chosen side sauce of honey garlic added further flavour and a contrasting hit of sweetness. Service on both visits was very friendly and helpful. Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch for fried chicken, and Iron Rooster has got your fix.

The people at the restaurant were very helpful when explaining the menu and made good recommendations. I will be back if I am the area.

Went the Saturday after NYE, so it was pretty dead…read more Very nice set-up inside. Almost identical to Real Sports in Toronto, just smaller. Great place to watch a game (especially if you get one of the good booths). The food was mediocre at best. My buddy and I both ordered the Plain Jane burger and fries. The patty was sorta ok. My friend had a gluten free bun, which ended up being rock hard (defrosted?). Feel like they should have put some condiments on the table (ketchup/mustard/relish) in case you don't like your burger too dry. Our server (Mary) was great. Checked in routinely, very friendly. Chatted to us for a bit too since it was so slow, which was nice. Price: meh. My burger/fries + 3 draught came to about $45 after tax. Higher than I'd like, but more or less as expected. TL;DR - 2.5/5 - Go to watch a game and have some drinks. Avoid the food.

HFX is the megalithic sports bar which replaced the Halinfamous Palace. Gone are the shady bathroom going ons and general shadiness after a coat of paint and what I can only assume is a near illegal amount of bleach. Walking into the bar, you get the feel that they haven't completely left the club atmosphere behind - dimly lit other than the various neon lights and plentiful TVs, there's a weird vibe that for better or worse isn't your typical sports bar. Being a game night, there was a good sized crowd here and we were limited to their special events menu, which wasn't incredibly constraining and I can appreciate that they'd want to keep things as streamlined in the kitchen as possible when they're expecting to be slammed. Food wise, I was pulled in by the siren song of a couple creative apps - the mac and cheese wontons, and the Philly cheese steak spring rolls - which I got for the table to share and also ordered the 'Busy Bee' burger which came topped with cheddar, onion rings and honey BBQ sauce on a brioche bun. Naturally, the beer was flowing as well. We didn't have to wait long at all, even with the crowd. The apps came first; the wontons were fairly plentiful, with 10 or 12 bite-sized carb-bombs. They were on the small side however, so there wasn't much mac and cheese inside. They would have been much better if they were larger, to have a more distinctive contrast between the creamy mac and cheese and the crispy, fried wonton. The marinara that came with them was fine, although with the crazy lighting, I wasn't sure what it was until I re-read the menu. The Philly cheese steak rolls had very crispy and flaky wraps, but went downhill as you went inside to meat that was noticeably dry and lacking in cheese. They did have a good beef flavour mind you, and the chopped onion and green pepper added some sharpness and depth to the flavour profile. The BBQ sauce on the side was like a mild steak sauce, which normally isn't my bag, but it helped the dry rolls go down. The Busy Bee weighs in with a respectable 6oz patty, and had a hearty beef flavour, but had a very unfortunate mushy texture. The flavour of the whole package was alright, and though I'm not normally a fan of BBQ sauces on anything, let alone hamburgers, as I find them to cloying and I don't like the fake smoke flavour, this one was OK. The house salad that I had in lieu of fries (to ward off complete self-disgust with my diet) was fairly fresh tasting for being out of season, and a tangy vinaigrette helped cut through the fat of my other food. I also snagged a wing from the birthday boy. The battered wings came with the sauce of the side, which I have recently become a convert to. It was a reasonable size and had a good, crispy batter, but the chicken itself had a less than pleasant texture, either from freezing or needing another minute or two in the fryer. Serving my boyfriendly duties, I got to finish off my girlfriend's fries. They came in a cute, but manly, mini bucket which must serve the double duty of both presentation and portion control for the kitchen staff. They seemed like your run-of-the-mill, skin on, crispy-coated, from frozen fries, but they were still crispy and tasty at the end of the meal, so I don't have any actual complaints despite that build-up of adjectives. All in all, it seems like a good place to catch a game, or many games. That being said, the kitchen needs to step up their game if they want to be worthy of the high end bar prices that they lean towards. At $20 + tax for a pitcher of Keith's, you're going to feel it in the wallet if you're camped out here for a while.

Full slab rib plate - juicy tender ribs with really sensational seasoning and light sauce. Love the house bbq sauce our order came with. Basket of cornbread - really dense cornbread which is unusual but I like the taste and texture. THREE meats - pulled pork melts like butter in your mouth so moist. 1/4 BBQ chicken leg - nicely done Smoked sausage - a nice option. Handcut fries - I wouldn't say I'm a fan, these were too mushy for me. Large potato salad - yes go for this all the way! It was a really nice side. Lots of onions though so if you don't like that well too bad. TWO meats - Beef Brisket - falling apart so delicate and good 1/4 BBQ chicken breast - again nicely done Large Mac n Cheese - a little spice hit I enjoyed but the kids didn't like it. Orders online and it was done right on time for pickup. Noticed a few seats inside. Dark interior vibes.

I have been eating damned good Southern U.S. BBQ for most of my life (like old Mr. Moses selling racks of ribs out of his old smoker on a trailer good), and I can tell these ribs were steamed, not smoked. They were fatty and soft/mushy. A good, long-smoked rib has the fat rendered down and still leaves a "bite." I mistakenly ordered a rack, thinking I could make two meals out of it. Nope. I was able to get through half, and that will be it. The sauces were good, and I enjoyed the potato salad. It had a bit of a tang, and I wasn't mad about it. The BBQ beans were okay. No issues with any of the other food the family ordered.

They've got a great selection of craft beers and cocktails--I went with the Purple Haze and really enjoyed it. Refreshing, balanced, and not overly sweet. For food, I ordered the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich, and wow--it was incredible. Super flavourful, perfectly cooked, and impressively held together even with the runny (and delicious) egg on top. My wife went with the New Orleans pasta, and we were really impressed by how accommodating the kitchen was with her dietary restrictions. They happily swapped out the chicken and ham for shrimp, and the dish still came out beautifully done. You can tell the chef really loves what they do--it absolutely shows in the quality and care of the food. It's easy to see why this place is a local favourite. Your Father's Moustache was always a favourite of mine, especially the Wings Night - $1 wings were my go‑to comfort food. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. When I tried to order, the server asked for ID. I didn't have my physical passport on me, but I offered a clear photo of it on my phone, along with my wife's. We are both clearly over age - I'm 32 and she's 28. I even said we would be happy to order no alcohol - just wings to eat in or even take out. The staff refused every option, insisting on a physical ID only. I explained that this was a special trip for us, and that I had been looking forward to this meal for years. The response was a flat "no" with no flexibility or empathy. I understand that restaurants need to follow rules, but denying a take‑out order or a non‑alcoholic dine‑in meal to two adults who are obviously of legal age - and who have photographic proof - feels unnecessarily rigid and customer‑unfriendly. Many places accept digital ID or at least allow takeout without checking ID. This policy makes no sense and cost you loyal customers who travelled thousands of kilometres to revisit a fond memory. Very poor customer service. We left hungry and heartbroken. I won't be coming back, and I'll think twice before recommending this place to anyone.

As a pre-show get together for the Canada Heritage moments at the Carbon Arc (note to self: remember that review too), Meegan and I met some fellow yelpers here for some nosh and wine. We were the first to arrive (around 5ish) and if I can give anyone a little piece of advice about going to check this place out for the first time let it be this - that was the perfect time to be there. There were only a few patrons inside so we were able to get some great service (both fast and super friendly). As it is a music bar and grill they seem to have an extensive list of upcoming events but when we went all was quiet. While the menu can seem a little pricey we happened to go in during happy hour (4-6). Appetizers are 2 for 1, house wine $5 = Happy Tara! There seems to be a lot of talk about the grilled cheese sandwich this place serves up but Meegan and I opted to for the lamb lollipops ($10ish), the torpedo shrimp ($9ish but remember we were there for happy hour) and then shared the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich with Avocado ($11ish). It was plenty of food for the both of us and I really thought everything was very good. The house red was nothing to shake a stick at either (and three glasses later it was even better). I loved the look of the place. Dark wood and plenty of seating without feeling like you're bumping into one another. Located on the corner of Argyle and Prince it's looks to be an awesome place to hang out especially on the patio during the summer. If you go let me know how the grilled cheese sandwich is.
