    Beef Bibimbap with Miso Soup
    Yoland E.

I had a great experience here during my trip to Halifax! I ordered the Beef Bibimbap, which came with Miso soup (usually you pay for it separately in other restaurants) and side dishes. The food was amazing and well priced, the service was fast and friendly, and the overall atmosphere when dining in was great!

Quiet restaurant with a great atmosphere. I was visiting with friends from the United States and wanted some Korean food. Food and service was great!

I don't give that many 5 star reviews, but this one really earned it. Great food, lovely friendly staff, and you'll be surrounded by locals who obviously like the place as well. Don't be afraid to go beyond your comfort zone - the wait staff will make recommendations on what and how much food to order, explain how things work and help you out on some of the harder stuff, like how/when to use the tools you're given for the grill tables! We focused on the beef rib grill - we really didn't need to order anything else as it comes with salad, miso soup and veggie accompaniments. Here's a tip ... be sure to get those veggies (especially the carrots) going on the grill before the meat arrives. They take FOREVER!

bone soup - everyone seemed to be ordering it

Recently, I've found that a lot of restaurants in Halifax are not what their store fronts first suggest. Upon entering, I immediately realized that it was a lot bigger inside than I thought it would be. There were many wooden tables, and the room extended far into the back. Kpop played softly in the background, and there were already several groups seated inside. In fact, there was a constant stream of customers all night, which surprised me since we went on a Wednesday. My only complaint (if it can even be called one) was that they had brought out my food way earlier than everyone else's, which meant I had to wait for a few minutes before eating. Still, they brought all of the food out quickly, even if it wasn't together. In total, we ordered eel on rice, bulgogi, a glass noodle appetizer, royal dukbokki, their best selling bone soup (it was super spicy), ramen, and bibimbap. We ordered one plate for every person and two appetizers to share; this turned out to be way too much food, and we took about 1/3 of it as leftovers. Their portions were huge, and our bill approximated to around $25 a person! Unlike the royal dukbokki at Song's, the appetizer here was not spicy at all, which I appreciated. We over ordered for sure, and I was super full in the end . The only thing that was underwhelming was the edemame. Will come back in the future for sure!

    Bbq mixed meat for 3

Good dining experience, our table got the dinner for 3 mixed meat bbq grilled in front of us. My only feedback is it could use more veggies otherwise you're pretty much eating a meat buffet and the meat takes a very long time to cook.

Oh my goodness! So much delicious food! Tonight we took our whole family here, 3 adults and 3 kids plus a baby. We ordered the Seafood pancake and Jap-chae (sweet potato noodles with mixed veggies) for my kids. Even though they were listed as appetizers the portion size can definitely qualify as main dishes. The Seafood pancake was loaded with squid and shrimp. Jap-chae was amazing. The seasoning was bang on with soy sauce and sesame oil. My husband couldn't have enough of it. We also ordered the Fish cake hot pot for 3. It came with skewers of fish cakes and veggies. The broth tastes like Japanese shabu-shabu with flavourful umami and a hint of sweetness. My 2 yo daughter finished all the carrots in the pot. The sweetest owner lady (Sue) came and gave us bulgogi (beef slices) stir fried with dokbokki (rice cakes). My sons gobbled it up. This meal was a complete success with the kids, and adults of course. The service was fast and staff were friendly and efficient. We came in their busiest time (Saturday evening when it warmed up to +4C so it seemed everyone came out to dine), and yet the wait staff still had smiles on their face. Amazing food with impeccable service. 5 stars well-deserved!

To find a good Korean restaurant isn't an easy task, but Gangnam is absolutely one of them. Very good service, food served quickly, meals are amazingly tasty and very reasonable prices. The only issue we had- ordered too much food:) will be back there for sure

This place has the most disgusting meat I've ever seen in Korean BBQ. Thick and chewy is how I would describe it. No flavor at all.

The flavors here were rich and deep and maybe even mild for me but... potato was nowhere to be found in potato soup. The galbi was sweet and well marinated, soft yet chewy. Wholesome bowl of bibimbap with a good mix and balance of textures and flavors from the veggies, meat, grains and egg, bound by a few squeezes of gochujang. I wish there was more seafood in the pancake, but what was there made up in taste. Settled in a quiet and sleepy plaza, we were their last customers for the night. Service was attentive and thoughtful, the server asked about our preferences for water temperature and cleaned up promptly in a team. The restaurant offers KBBQ in addition to a la carte.

It's a small space with maybe a couple of dozen covers, simply decorated with some lovely fabric prints on the walls. Tables have the hot grill plate, if you're going that way. Our waitress was delightful, especially when she discovered she was entertating a fellow Korean speaker. Encouragingly the clientele was heavy on oriental folk and the food was just superb. We went quite light, what with it being lunchtime and everything was tasty, good size and very authentic, according to my daughter. With the population growing in the area, I sincerely hope this excellent establishment flourishes.

Before heading out, we selected five items from the extensive menu, and chose to eat-in. When I handed the list of items we wanted, the hostess graciously suggested that the amount of food might be too much for two diners. My response was that the intent was to get to taste as broad a range of dishes possible, rather than a limited number based on just two of us. Turns out that had there been four of us dining, there was plenty of food to go around. We were the only Caucasians present. I think there were five other tables occupied, and the customers were relaxed regulars who obviously had a preference for this venue. I think the wait time for the food was about 15 - 20 minutes. As the dishes started arriving, we were issued chopsticks and spoons. Neither of us were experienced in the use of chopsticks, so forks were the first request. Maybe even knives, next time. The dishes were produced without any ostentatious flourish. All were hot and the dishes well heated and I found that out the hard way. I was impressed with the hostess. She was the only employee in the serving area, in addition to an unknown number employed in the kitchen. So she did the serving, the cleanups, answered the phone, and dealt with the take-our orders. She wore an engaging smile, and was gracious at all times. No lurking nearby as we ate, but she had a very good situational awareness of all that was taking place. There was also a "call" button on the table, which brought her immediately to us to answer a question. With her poise and skills, there are a lot of servers and hostesses I have encountered at other dining spots who could have learned from watching her for even a short time. The food surpassed any expectations. It was all excellent. I felt that the kimchee fried rice might not have delivered a full kimchee experience. And then I spotted a couple of small pieces of cabbage on one of the condiments plates and popped one the into my mouth. My sinuses suddenly felt as if they were on fire. My face grew hot, and I realized that this had to be the genuine item. Next time, my approach will be a bit more circumspect, but I will again partake. My son and I will be back, and will make sure that there are one or two others dining with us. This was an experience we both want to share with others.

I got the Bibimbap ($11.99) and got my husband the Dakgalbi Combo ($14.99). The Bibimbap was tasty, but the meat was a wet and saucy ground meat mixture, and not the drier ground meat or beef bulgogi slices that I'm used to with Bibimbap. The vegetables were green cabbage, red cabbage, carrots, onions, and spring mix lettuce. There was also a fried egg on top. No mushrooms or zucchini. And definitely no gosari. The rice was white rice and it was nicely cooked though. Overall it was an enjoyable meal, even though it was lacking some ingredients that I really like in bibimbap. Also the amount of meat was fairly minimal. My husband's Dakgalbi Combo said it was supposed to come with 2 Gimmari dumplings, but it only came with one :( It was good, but where's my other one? It's basically glass noodles, wrapped in seaweed, battered, then deep-fried. I wish we had gotten 2, as per the menu. The chicken was good, but a bit on the dry side. It had a fiery kick to it. It also had some fried rice cake slices in it. No vegetables though, other than onions. The cashier was really friendly and great. I advised her of my sesame seed allergy and she checked with the kitchen and advised me of recommended substitutions. She even checked my food before giving it to me (the kitchen actually had to remake my food, as it did contain sesame seeds first time around. The cashier caught it and asked them to remake it). Five stars to her! The food I'd say is 3.5 stars. So overall, I'm saying 4 stars. There's some seating inside the restaurant and one lonely table for 2 in front of the restaurant, which is where we ate. I kind of liked only having the two of us out there, lol, but if you're set on eating outside, you'll have to try your luck, as the table could be taken. If you eat inside they have a free self-serve water station. There is also free WiFi. The password is on the wall. Street parking only.

Stopping in around 4pm on a Tuesday, it was pretty quiet in the small shop, other than the stream of music videos playing on the TV. I'm not even sure what the source was given that MuchMusic and MTV barely play any music these days. Ordering at the main counter, I went with the sweet and spicy chicken combo ($8.50) which comes with rice, salad and miso soup, and I tacked on a bottle of water as well. Sitting down at the small counter running along the window, I took in some Adele and other pop music mixed with the sizzle of the deep fryer in the back and notes of spice in the air. It wasn't long before I had my container of grub and was on my way elsewhere to dig in. Upon opening the container, the first thing you're going to see is the respectably-sized pile of deeply red hunks of chicken. I'm pretty far from being a Korean food expert, but I assume that their ubiquitous fermented chili paste, gojuchang, plays a leading role in this chicken. The hint of fermented tang to it would suggest that as well. That, combined with the spice and slight crispness to the chicken made for a tasty entree. I'm not entirely confident that the pieces of chicken didn't come out of a bag: they weren't that mushy texture that frozen chicken can be, or overly dry, just not particularly moist and way too uniform. A pleasant surprise was a couple fried dumplings, which were crispy on the outside, and juicy and pork-tastic inside. The steamed rice was cooked perfectly and was easy to eat with chop sticks. My salad seemed to be run of the mill, creamy coleslaw. It was a bit disappointing in that it would have been nice to try a Korean salad, but it actually helped balance out the heat of the spicy chicken. The cup of miso soup was nice as well, with a mild broth that still had a nice umami flavour, with bits of konbu and ultra-tender cubes of tofu. All in all, it was a very well rounded meal, and at a very good price. They're a unique business in the city, so I hope they can carve out the niche they deserve and I'll be back in the near future so that I can try out their battered chicken.
