Rocky's Sauce is a regularly requested item whenever a friend returns to Halifax. It is as good as it gets.

Be careful, because this food truck will change everything you thought you knew about fish & chips…read more Honestly, Bud the Spud just gifted us with the absolute best haddock we've ever had. So thick, meaty, fresh, and filling! Not oily or greasy. Just crunchy and hot and delicious. I doused mine in malt vinegar, wrapped the end in a napkin so I could dip into the tartar sauce, and I ate it by hand. No shame, guys. And the fries? The fries are something special. They have this amazing taste to them, and I suspect it has something to do with their frying process. Are they double fried? Maybe. It could also be that they're local potatoes? Whatever it is, they're addicting. They were cooked perfectly and needed no ketchup, salt, or whatever. So good, you could eat them by the handful. And I should know: I had their fries 3 times in 4 days. No judgements here. The portions are super generous, so don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach! I split a plate of 2 pieces of fish & fries with my husband. A substantial lunch for both of us that only cost $8! They also sell some canned drinks, which you'll probably need to wash down the deliciousness. And they're cash only, so either come prepared or you may need to hit up the ATM at the pizza place like we did hahah. After our first amazing experience, we had to go back. Bud the Spud ended up being our last meal in Halifax before we headed to the airport, and it was the perfect way to end our trip. And of course, we can't get those giant fresh haddock pieces and amazing chips out of our heads. Is it unreasonable to book an international flight for a food truck? Asking for a friend ...

On my mission to try all of the local food trucks, I'd come across word of one at Dalhousie called…read moreMy Three Cousins. Further research told me that it was run by Dal's food services group (thumbs down) but was cheap (thumbs up).  Tracking them down was much more of an effort than it should have been, as My Three Cousins doesn't seem to be too concerned with things like social media, exposure for their business, or turning a profit. Messages regarding their hours on both Facebook and Twitter simply went unanswered. I can't recall how I finally discovered their hours or when they opened for the season, but it certainly wasn't thanks to the horrible management of M3C. If basic social media is beyond their ken, no wonder they're not on the Street Food app or going to the food truck rallies. I made my way over on one sunny summer day, taking in my old haunts of the Dalhousie campus. M3C is parked right next to the economics department and Studley gym, at the very top of University Ave. There were a few other people sitting and having a bite and lined up for food - mostly what appeared to be grad students slogging through summer work, and getting a cheap bite to eat. Their compact menu has a Lebanese/Greek theme to it, with the likes of souvlaki, falafel and Greek fries, which come topped with feta, and tzatziki on the side. They're certainly quite budget-friendly, as nothing costs over $6. I went with the chicken souvlaki, Greek fries, and a bottle of water. The damage after taxes was less than $14. I squatted down on one of the picnic tables to await my order, which was unexpectedly brought out to me instead of a being yelled out. Kudos to them, and it made me more bothered that M3C doesn't have a tipping function on their debit machine.   Despite getting the Greek fries as a side order, they seemed massive, with a sizeable container loaded with fries and covered in feta cheese. The chicken souvlaki wrap wasn't big, but hey, $6. The chicken had a nice flavour, was moist, and had a bit of char to it. I thought it was weird that there was rice in it, but I'm assuming that's because it's a cheap filler. Or maybe I don't know anything about souvlaki wraps, which is equally likely. My pile of fries were great - a deep, golden brown, these fries were short and ultra crisp, and the plentiful feta made for a tasty, salty topping. I didn't use much of the tzatziki, as it was a bit too dill-y for my likings, and the fries were good as they were.  The meal took me a bit to go through, but I wasn't in any rush, and enjoyed the sun and nostalgia of my alma mater. My Three Cousins is criminally managed, with abysmal market presence and exposure, which is sad because these guys could be making money for Dal and its students, instead of just doing the bare minimum to try and break even. If you're in the south end and looking for a quick bite between the hours of 11am and 2pm, give them a go.

I had the falafel the other day, mainly because the prices beat everything else around and I like falafels. This one was "different", it was huge but surprise it had French fries in it. And the dressing tasted more like caesar then tzatziki ...so it can't go on the great falafel list. The big yellow truck is at the top of University Ave across from the Killiam library. This man knows his hot dogs, and condiments. This was my favorite experience at the farmers market…read moretoday! I was initially drawn in by this place because who I believe is the owner, and condiment connoisseur was showing some of his customers blends of sauces he thought would go best with their sausages/hot dogs. I went with the veggie dog. He informed me he tries to cook them in little batches because he thinks they taste best fresh. Fair enough! I waited about 5 minutes, he apologized several times for the wait but I didn't mind. When I got my dog he asked if I preferred barbeque sauce or mustard. I said mustard. After I said this it lead to a fantastic customization of toppings to add to my hot dog. The first was a Bulgarian cabbage slaw. Next he suggested I try a horse radish sauce and a sweet mustard he brings in from Boneheads BBQ. After that he recommended a type of shallot I think he said was from France, he also mentioned they were very hard to find. After I piled my veggie dog with these toppings he asked if I prefer tomatoes or pickles. I said tomatoes, so he suggested fresh diced tomatoes in a balsamic vinegar sauce he gets from the Mennonites. Of course, I accepted all of his recommendations. He told me to take a bite and tell him what I thought. It was fantastic. The Bulgarian cabbage slaw is an alternative to saurkraut I think, but its a bit more bitter. I liked it. The horse radish and sweet mustard added a pungent and sweet component to the cabbage slaw, the shallots were very subtle, but the tomatoes were really my favorite part, they added freshness to my veggie dog. Who knew deciding what would taste good on a hot dog could be such an art?!

Only downside is that you might have to wait a while for your order if there are a few people, but this has to do with the owner's obsession to get the dogs perfect (so he only cooks a small number of sausages for a certain amount of time). Topping choices are good, and sauces are many. All around a good place to grab a quick snack while out on the waterfront for the day!

Tunisian Dude specializes in street food, with a very lean menu that's comprises of a handful of sandwiches. Their stuffed baguette piqued my interest and I hunkered down to eat at the bar seating by their front window, taking in the suburban sights of Herring Cove Road. While waiting for my food, I saw the very affable, patient owner handle some older, less adventurous eaters through the menu and I was impressed with his people skills, all the more so since I'm not sure they're something I possess anymore after many blessed years of not being in customer service. When I got my sandwich, it was a sight to behold - thin, crisp bread was absolutely *crammed* with beef (chicken and tofu versions are also available), cheese and sautéed veg. The earthy seasoning was flavourful but still very approachable, and my selected level of spice (3 out of 5) had a pleasant zing without overshadowing the other flavours. This is an absolute hot mess of a sandwich, in the very best way! A small side of fries was of the coated variety, and while some good hand-cut fries are always preferred, these were a safe bet and still hit the spot. Tunisian Dude may be off the beaten path, but you're got to try this this unique restaurant slinging some delicious Tunisian bites!
