Fleshing out the options a bit, there's also burgers, hotdogs and deep fried sides like onion rings and poutine.  Having arrived a just after the lunch crowd would have dissipated, I was able to immediately walk up and place my order, which had to be a single piece of fish and chips. I chatted with the friendly woman working there (Fran herself?) and my food was ready within a few minutes. A table next to the truck was set up with cutlery, seasonings and condiments, including spray bottles of white and malt vinegars. With a few picnic tables set up next to the truck, I sat down in the lightly cool, spring air and dug in. The fish was a hefty size, more than enough to make me glad that I didn't get a second piece. I enjoyed the thick, crispy batter and the fresh fish that flaked easily as I cut it with my plastic fork. A cup of what appeared to be homemade tartar sauce, with a generous amount of chopped pickles or capers, added a creamy tang that went well with both the fish and the fries. The fries were hand-cut, and a very deep, golden brown, but weren't as crispy as I would have liked. They would likely benefit from a blanching in water to remove excess starch before frying, and a double fry.  I appreciated the paper plates, but unfortunately there was only a garbage can and no composting or recyclables bin. Fran's could use a little polishing on the truck and the fries, but one of the original food trucks in the city is definitely doing its fish right.

After seeing this little fish'n'chip truck in downtown Dartmouth for months, I decided to finally give them a go. Last year they disappeared when the weather turned cold so I thought it best to get my order of fries when I could. Since I'm a vegetarian, the menu options were limited so I went with the slightly-healthier-sounding french fries over onion rings. In Googling this place (to see if they had a Web site) I discovered the fries are hand-made in the truck each day. And you can tell. They're nice, thick-cut fries. I may have to head back soon to try the onion rings. For all you omnivores, they have fish (fresh from Eastern Passage, I'm told), seafood and burgers too. It was a good experience: just walk up, order, wait a minute, pay, and voila! food. Staff were friendly and happy to have my business.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a good slice from time to time. I prefer to call them sticks but I suppose he does have shishkabob written on the side of his cart. Nuzzled into an entrance way just down from Willy's, the smell of their sausages and kabobs is like a sensory overload for half, large, and extra largely snapped individuals from thurs-sat. Cool part is they are super cheap and leave you with less of a fat and carb induced hangover the next day. 6 bucks for 3 sticks and a lot of protein. The cool part if you can slap them in a bun and take away the stick, or you can naw off the stick as you walk (me). They are marinated and cooked to perfection. I swear, they get me every time. I think I go out for the sole purpose of getting a stick. ALL HAIL THE MEAT MAN.

Centrally located on Argyle above the Grand Parade, it was a sunny but breezy day - perfect for eating outside. The menu on this bright red truck is pretty compact, mainly focused on burgers and hot dogs, although they're amped up versions of these handheld food classics. I'm talking a bacon-wrapped, deep fried hot dog; a donair sausage; these aren't your typical tube steaks. My friend snagged their poutine, while I went with the donair sausage and fries. It was a short wait, and soon we were on a bench in the Grand Parade while hungry starlings looked on with jealousy through their black, soulless eyes. The poutine was a big hit. Their fries are on the thin, shoestring end of the spectrum; similar to McDonald's in diameter but with the golden brown colour and the deeper flavour of a hand cut fry. The curds quickly yielded to the hot fries and gravy, which was rich and not too salty. All in all, a well executed version of one of our national dishes. The donair sausage was a good size, tucked away in a lightly toasted bun, with chopped onion, tomato and a squirt of donair sauce on top. I don't know if Eats makes their own donair sausages or procures them from elsewhere, but they're pretty darn good. They've got a smooth texture and a flavour that might not be exactly that of your typical donair, but it's earthy and spicy and a solid effort. The donair sauce added that pleasing bit of sweetness and the onions and tomatoes brought their tartness and acidity to the plate (cardboard box?), and also kept this from being a completely vegetable-free meal. Did I mention that this was also effectively my breakfast? Luckily my shameful breakfast was at least a tasty one. If I'm ever in the neighbourhood, I wouldn't hesitate to give one of their burgers a go, or maybe even the bacon-wrapped hot dog, just maybe not for my first meal of the day next time.

I finally visited their emporium further along the Highway today. It's a pleasant enough spot, primarily a take out joint, but with a few tables inside should you so desire. I picked up two dogs for takeout and I was pretty full by the time I'd finished. Wonderful flavours, perfectly cooked and presented. Very much recommended for a filling party snack or lunch.

Not the least of these is the major turnaround that has taken place at the Esquire Plaza strip malls. What were once sparsely-occupied places that seemed to churn through the few businesses that did open there, are now fully occupied, and mainly with restaurants from around the globe! My first time at any of the restaurants (and certainly not my last) was at Korean corn dog slinger, Kon Dog. The Korean take on the corn dog only started spreading broadly across Canada in the past few years, so Halifax is surprisingly not far behind on the trend! While international chain Chungchun blazed the trail in late 2021, it wasn't long before indy shop Kon Dog set up shop a year later. As soon as you enter, it's readily apparent that Kon Dog is (smartly) doing a lot of hand-holding with what their products are and how the ordering process goes. There's even very cool, very detailed plastic models of the different types of corn dogs, including the standard all-beef, mozzarella, half and half, as well as iterations with different toppings! The menu makes for straight forward ordering, and you can have your corn dogs topped with pre-made seasoning and sauce combos from a list, or free wheel it. It's a very smart strategy for easing people's nerves in trying something new, as well as speeding up the process in general. I arrived for a late, weekend lunch, and their limited seating was nearly full. A steady stream of mainly families continued to come while I was there. I went for the namesake Kon Dog, which is the all-beef option, as well as a Spicy Half and Half, which is made up of a jalapeno sausage and mozza. One I had topped with tiny hash brown potatoes and the other had bits of ramen noodles. After a short wait (they take about 5 minutes to cook), my K-dogs were ready for their seasonings. I forget the names of the preset combos that I got, but one was basically ketchup and honey mustard, while the other had both cheddar and parmesan powders. It's hard to tell from my picture, but these are *thicc bois*! They've gotta be awkward/potentially quite messy to eat for kids or anyone with jaw problems, and it's likely why knives and forks are available. Luckily, having a big mouth is what I'm known for! Both K-dogs were very well executed, with airy dough and melty cheese inside (in the half and half). While I'm always a fan of hash browns, the ramen took top marks for toppings, with a huge crunch factor! The seasonings were what you'd expect - this isn't fancy, modernist cuisine here, they're coming out of big buckets - but their salty, savoury pleasure cannot be denied. Kon Dog was a delicious indulgence, and is head and shoulders above the street hotdog cart steamies or backyard BBQ dogs that we're so accustomed to.

Their location seems like an odd one, being past the main commercial section of Sackville Drive, but it is just a couple blocks from a junior high school, and they've surely benefited from the provincial government moving to make school cafeteria menus healthier. Ultimate's own menu is what you would expect - hamburgers, sausages and hotdogs, onion rings, the namesake French fries, and poutine (albeit with shredded mozza instead of curds). I was here to try out their much lauded fries, but wanted something more substantial with it so I got a single cheeseburger as well. As they use 4oz patties, I figured that this would be a more than adequate meal. I asked for my fries first since my burger was going to be about 10 minutes, and in a couple minutes had my tray of fries and took up residence on one of their three bright yellow picnic tables. The fries were of a medium thickness, golden brown and skin on - classic hand-cut fries. They were fairly crispy, but it's next to impossible to get fries this thick as crispy as their thinner brethren. They weren't as ultimate as advertised, but were still quite good. Several minutes later I had my burger. It was served simply on a piece of aluminum foil and open faced so I could dress it myself. The toppings were typical for a place that sells tubed meats - chopped onions, banana pepper rings, sauerkraut and pickles. I loaded up with some onions, relish and pickles - the ultimate breath enhancers of toppings. They're not big patties once cooked, and the bun was just your typical small-ish commercial bun. The meat had a good beef flavour and didn't seem like it was from frozen, but it would have benefited from a better crust and some more seasoning. While their name sets a pretty high bar, I feel "The Decent Fry" doesn't play as well, so I'll give them that.

McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

I popped over on a sunny afternoon after the lunch crowds had left, perusing the menu on the bright red truck. They have several chef-ed up hot dogs, including a kimchi dog and a pulled pork. They also have plain dogs and sausages, as well as vegetarian and gluten free options. I went with the breakfast-themed Wafflelicious - a bacon wrapped dog topped with toasted waffle bits, cheddar, bacon bits, and maple syrup. I made it a combo, which adds fries and a drink. I was quickly informed that they were out of slices of bacon, but they offered to add more of the bits. It was a short wait, and I soon had my impressively full box of food, with the hot mess of a hot dog on top of a large pile of fries. I added a squirt of garlic chili sauce from their selection of cool house-made sauces and was on my way to sit in front of the new library to get away from the hyper-aggressive birds that are around the old library. I started the endeavor to eat my hot dog by picking out the waffle bits and eating those. They were lightly toasted, but I would have preferred a Belgian-style waffle with deeper pockets. The dog itself was fine, but not as good as some locally-made dogs. I was glad that they use real bacon for their bacon bits, and I was probably better off that there wasn't a deep fried slice of bacon on my dog. All the sauces combined into a messy but delicious topping that hit all the right notes - sweetness from the maple syrup, spice and savouriness from the sriracha knock off, and some tang from the relish. There must have been a couple medium sized potatoes worth of fries in my box. Hand cut, they were decently crispy and I slowly enjoyed them as I people watched and took in the sun.
