Halifax Brewery Market

TL;DR/The Short Version: Cool market in a funky space. Lots of vendors and lots of delicious…read morefoods. The Long Version: If I lived in Halifax, I would be at this market every week. It's only open Saturdays from 8am-2pm. My husband and I made specific plans to check out this market on our most recent trip to Halifax and I'm so glad we did. It's in what would have been the outside space between old buildings, but that space has since been enclosed and now it's inside. It looks really funky and cool. They had so many vendors that interested me. Lots of food places to choose from. I had done some reconnaissance online and flagged 2 vendors I wanted to try: Mediocre Bakery and Snow Day Treats. I found Mediocre Bakery, but wasn't able to find Snow Day Treats. Luckily, I found a good substitute with Helene Cookies. Mediocre Bakery (funny and ironic name because they are far from mediocre) sells these spiral buns, like cinnamon buns but more spirals, lol, and both sweet and savoury. We got a Muffuletta bun ($6) to share. It was fantastic, albeit a bit greasy. It had olives and pickled vegetables in it. We loved it. We would definitely buy from this vendor again and maybe try a sweet one next time. I wanted to get the little crispy squares that looked like snow from Snow Day Treats, but couldn't find the vendor anywhere, but then I spotted the strawberry nougat from Helene Cookies, which isn't traditional nougat at all, and it looked like it could be a good substitute. It was a bit pricey at $15 for a small bag but after tasting a sample, I had to get it. Haha. The nougat has crispy parts and looked somewhat like it was covered in snow, lol. The owner was so friendly and welcoming. Offering us lots of samples and letting us know that all the items were his own recipe. I looked online and the strawberry nougat has marshmallow, Ritz cracker crumbs, dried cranberry, dried strawberries, butter, whole milk powder, and walnuts. How creative! They call them "Happy Cubes" on their website, which is a fitting name because they made me happy, lol. I think the Happy Cubes are proper cubes, while the nougat is the ends and broken pieces. Not as aesthetically pleasing as the cubes, but delicious nonetheless. The highlight of our visit was a place we stumbled upon: 175 Chicken. I saw they had Coffee Fried Chicken for $8. It's chicken pieces marinaded in coffee and deep-fried and served with salted caramel sauce. Sounded so weird, I had to try it. Let me tell you, it was amazing! One of the best things I've ever had. They fry it to order so it was piping hot and so crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside with a coffee flavour. So wacky but so delicious. They also have regular fried chicken for those less adventurous. They sell sauces too. I also got a Blueberry Rose kombucha from Pickled Pink ($5.75). It was good and I enjoyed the flavour profile. I was intrigued by a flavour they had called Organic Forest or something like that. I inquired and the lady said it had flavours of spruce, pine and cedar. I was a bit hesitant to buy it even though it sounded interesting so she gave me a sample. It wasn't my cup of tea, so I asked to try the Blueberry Rose as I suspected I'd like that one, and I was right. Hubby got a drip coffee (medium for $2.50) at CTC and liked it. There were so many other vendors I wanted to try, but we had planned on going to the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market immediately afterwards so I wanted to save stomach space, lol. In retrospect, we should have skipped the other market and just gorged on the food at the Halifax Brewery Market. Haha. If you're visiting Halifax on a Saturday and you like markets, I definitely recommend checking out this Halifax Brewery Market! (175)

The Long Version: When my husband and I were in Halifax recently, we did 2 Markets back-to-back, this one and the Halifax Brewery Market and I personally liked the Halifax Brewery Market better, as it had more interesting foods and vendors and wasn't as crowded. My impression is that this Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market is more for tourists and the Halifax Brewery Market is more for locals, but I could be wrong. I got a Pancit Bihon for my husband and I to share at Pinoy's Best Halifax. It was $7 for a small serving. It tasted good and had this Liptons Chicken Soup smell that I loved, lol. Weird, I know. I just didn't like that they microwaved it in a plastic container. I would have preferred it if it was kept in metal warming trays and served into a cardboard container. My husband got a 4L jug of Maple syrup from Ripley's Maple ($58) for his sister. She was coming to Halifax too but not when the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market would be open so she asked him to get it for her. He gave it to her in Halifax and she was driving home, so we cannot attest to whether the jug would survive a flight in checked baggage, it would be at your own risk, lol. I'm glad we checked out this market. If we were in the area again on future visits to Halifax I would drop by, but I wouldn't specifically plan to go to it like we did this time. (179)

Rose & Rooster quickly rose (sorry, not sorry) to the top of my list, with glowing reviews and a menu that was approachable but also putting more effort in than many rural cafes tend to. We arrived for a late lunch and were able to easily snag a table out front and one blessedly in the shade. Ordering at the counter inside, it was a tough call for me between their seafood chowder and the fishcakes, but I eventually went for the latter. Some brunchy options were still available, and my wife opted for their croque monsieur. Sipping on some iced Americanos, we soon had our food in front of us. I was immediately impressed with the fish cakes as they looked like they had an incredible crust on them, and looks did not deceive! They were wonderfully crisp, and the interior was smooth, but still had a little texture from the small chunks of potato. Salt cod gave a pleasant flavour, and the green tomato chow/jam was a star in its own right, striking a great balance between sweet and tart. Some yellow flower petals fancied things up further. My side salad was fresh and crisp, with a mix of greens, cucumber, carrots and more, and a delicious, creamy dressing that had a flavour that I couldn't quite place, but quite enjoyed. My wife's croque monsieur was served open-faced, and the cheese and ham had gotten some great colour under the broiler, while a thick slice of fresh bread held up well under the rich, hot mess on top. Not to be outdone by the savoury foods, the desserts at Rose & Rooster will put you in a state of sugar-induced choice paralysis, but we were lured in by the colourful layers of the strawberry rhubarb and matcha layer cake! It's a mouthful to say, and eat, with alternating layers of airy cake, a summery strawberry and rhubarb spread, and a lovely matcha cream. Topped off with more cream and a dusting of matcha powder, it was a flavour-packed treat that did not disappoint. It wouldn't be accurate to call Rose & Rooster a diamond in the rough, since the Eastern Shore is much too pretty for that, but we can stick to the jewelry theme and call them gold.

It seemed a fitting location to caffeinate and get a bite before closing on our first house, which officially mades us Dartmouthians! Having just moved back to Nova Scotia within the past couple years, I'd only been to their smaller, pre-renos location once. Since then, they've blessedly expanded into a neighbouring unit, giving a lot more seating and openness, as they were becoming victims of their own success in the small, original space. I'm a lover of all things breakfast, so I snagged one of their breakfast sandwiches, while my wife stuck to the baked goods and went with one of their lovely blueberry scones. Two medium roast drip coffees, black, completed our refueling. Right out of the gate, the scone was AMAZING! The exterior was lightly crisp, but the interior was moist and soft (sorry, Larry David) - cooked to absolute perfection. There must have been a light coating of sugar to get it so crispy, so I don't know how regular scone batter does that on its own! Topped with a blueberry icing, blue sprinkles and edible flowers, it was a beauty! With my appetite whetted, I demolished my delicious breakfast sandwich when it arrived. The egg was of the scrambled sort, and light and fluffy, complemented by the thick and crisp bacon. A tomato-based sauce, be it jam or a house-made ketchup added a mix of sweetness and acidity, and it was helluva breakfast sandwich. After a year and a half in our home and many returns visits for coffee, delicious baked goods, and one coffee tasting event, we came by much more recently for a weekend lunch. CGL is typically very busy on the weekend, but rainy weather made tables slightly more available. I didn't come here with proper food in mind, but seeing the lemongrass chicken banh mi on the menu quickly changed my mind and appetite. This sandwich had a lot (/everything) going for it - tender, flavourful chunks of moist chicken, big and bright flavours from the crisp daikon and carrot slaw, and cucumber and cilantro for yet more crunch and flavour. Not to be forgotten was the perfect French bread, with its shatteringly crisp exterior and a pleasantly dense and pliable crumb. Cafe Good Luck is easily the best cafe in downtown Dartmouth, with an assortment of wildly good coffees that they roast, top notch baked goods, and a small but mighty mix of hot foods when you need something more substantial than a pastry (but still get that pastry!).
