We arranged to have my mother-in-law's 80th birthday party at the diner. She prefers more casual places to go to and True North Diner was perfect. We arrived at True North Diner and there was seating reserved just for our party. The staff took the cake we had brought and said they would take care of it for us. The place makes you feel like you have gone back in time with its authentic vintage jukebox and classic cake display case filled with pies. I got the cheeseburger with the sweet potato fries which were amazing! A thicker cut fry can sometimes be less crisp but these were perfect and tasted delicious. The burger was moist and flavourful. Perfect diner food. Of course I also had to have a chocolate milkshake! Talk about classic. I prefer my shakes to be thicker but this one was very good and came with the metallic canister with additional shake. What a treat! True North Diner was a comfortable hang-out spot with casual food and seriously, the most patient staff in the whole world. They let us just wander and talk to everyone and gave us all time to catch up and say happy birthday to the birthday girl who had the greatest time. My only complaint? The floors were not very clean. Not just ours but around the restaurant which is a shame because I would have given it a perfect score had there been more attention taken to keeping the floors food-free. Reminds me of Frank's in Fredericton but a bit larger. Reasonable selection including breakfast buffet which actually looked good. 50's decor with background music, you had a mix of booths, mini booths & tables. Depending on where you sit, it seem tight fitting, but it's not. The menu had a pretty nice selection of mom & pop comfort food, which came to us on a busy Sunday @ 12:30 crowd. Tip: beat the church crowds on Sunday, get in here between the services. 3 burgers, some with onion rings and fish & chips with 4 pops came out to ~56$. I was told that this was had a great shake so you know I had to go try one. i took the BF out for supper here after we took a walk in the park that is actually right behind the diner and you can actually walk for about 1- 2 hours anyway back to the Diner. Set back in the 50's in the ara of the poodle skirts and tight white shits for the boys not that you are going to see that extreme here but close. Great old booth and walls covered with memorabilia. I can't believe it took me this long to try True North! We had breakfast here recently, and it was one of the best breakfasts I've had. I asked for crisp bacon ... and I got crisp bacon! Be still my heart! Their buttermilk biscuits are very good. The resto itself is quite a size. It looks like a good venue for fundraising events. The booths are clean and comfortable. Our server was prompt and friendly. Our food came out in record time, but it was hot and tasty. Prices are reasonable and portions are a good size. Haven't been here in a really long time, but was back recently for their breakfast buffet! For a buffet the food was hot and delish! They also have a staff member cooking up omelets on the spot, which is nice as most places you have to order one. I found the price '$14.99' a person was a little high but the food was really good so I didn't mind. I have been to this restaurant about 4 times in the past year and I have never been disappointed. Great decor and reminds me kinda like Archie's Place on Happy Days. We had a party of 5 and the server came over to the table fairly quickly to pass out menus and get drink orders. I ordered decaf coffee and she brewed a fresh pot as the other one had been sitting for a bit. When she returned she took all of our orders and never wrote down anything... We were all skeptical but we went along with it. Some 10-15 minutes later, our food came and there was 1 mistake. When brought to her attention she knew exactly the error without us saying anything, she brought back the correct order in less than 5 mins. I was impressed. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and I must say it was flavourful (with onion and plenty of taste). The texture is quite creamy. Home cut fries were delicious and they had malt vinegar!!! True North Diner is owned and run by my former university professor Jim Macaulay - who taught me restaurant management at MSVU - and so I was eager to see this establishment and judge every little detail accordingly! When we stepped in, it was a lot larger than I expected, until I rememberd this location had previously housed a Ponderosa, and then it all started to make sense. I really like what Jim has done with the vast, warehouse like space, completely changing it up into a full-on 50's style diner. It wasn't that busy when I was in, but I can imagine with a full house and waitresses running about, that it could have a very fun and fast-paced atmosphere. I did have a bit of fun and played Chubby Checker on the vintage jukebox. One of the first things I noticed was the personal note from Jim and his wife on the paper placemats, talking about their use of local suppliers and commitment to quality. I do have to say that our server was very professional and personable, and that the food definitely seemed to be of higher quality than your average diner. I ordered a simple fish and chips, relieved that there was a one-piece only option, that came with handcut fries. Preceding that, I split a vanilla milkshake and a small caesar salad. My dining partner had the bacon double cheeseburger and onion rings for his main. I won't get into too much detail about the food, because there really isn't that much to say - it's diner food - but at a higher caliber. You can tell the ingredients are local, the coleslaw is made in-house, and that nothing comes from a package. The fish had a seriously nice batter and the hand cut fries were also very, very good. There ended up being a small piece of plastic wrap that had stuck around on the burger, which we brought to our server's attention, just to let the kitchen know, but no big deal. She handled it well and at the end of the meal offered us dessert on the house, but we were too full to accept! It was a nice effort at customer recovery though and much appreciated. I love this place. It's quickly become one of our favorite haunting spots when we go out for dinner. Anyone formally familiar with the Ponderosa will still see a few reminders of the old restaurant. Otherwise the new ambiance is fresh and fun. The juke box in the far corner is a great chat piece. 25cents per play, with proceeds going to the IWK. It's great to see younger kids getting into the fun of such an "old time" thing... The food is great... we usually get the potato skins or nachos to start. Both are good, the only minor complaint about the nachos would be the cheese to nacho ratio is off... you end up with a lot of chips with no toppings. However what's there is so tasty. I usally go with the fish and chips as my main course. The fish is always large, I made the mistake once of ordering the 3 piece because I was unusally hungry. Bad idea!! lol ... too much food. I love their fries, home cut. I am a french fry snob and will only eat fries that are hand cut in restaurants, and True North's are some of the best i've eaten. Another favorite of people I've gone with are their homemade soups and bisquits. They always order a bisquit with their meal. I'm not a bisquit fan, so i've never ordered one, but they always get rave reviews at my table , and I have to say do look good. The only downfall I can find is one waitress they we get sporatically. I hadn't seen her for awhile and thought she was gone, unfortuntaley not. Her service is pretty bad, we generally will end up with cold food and warm milkshakes. I have to admit, the food here is not what I expected! This isn't a bad thing, though. I came here expecting diner food and a cheesy atmosphere, but that isn't what I got! I was also expecting friendly waitresses, but we can't always win. First off, the food. It's what we go for. It's not diner food at all, but great homecooked meals. I ordered the hot-turkey sandwich with fries; the turkey was beautifully cooked, the fries good (but not crispy), and the gravy wasn't bad. It had lots of thyme (a negative for me, but others may disagree), but other than that, everything was delicious. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their food to the point that we're all sitting around now, complaining about how stuffed we are. Unfortunately, this means no dessert for us. Boo hoo! The local food cooked right premise of this restaurant makes me feel good about stuffing my face, though, knowing that everything is homegrown: right down to the bread, baked locally. The atmosphere. Oh, the atmosphere. I will admit, it is a bit cheesy. But isn't that the point of a 50's diner? Checkerboard tile, red vinyl booths, and lots of chrome. It's beautiful, in its way. It's also very inviting and roomy, and a whole lot of fun. They have a Jukebox that costs a quarter a song, with the proceeds donated to the IWK. That there is awesome. Unfortunately, the music is a bit quiet. Food and atmosphere were total winners. Price was reasonable, a little steep, but I'm willing to pay $12 for a well cooked meal, especially with local ingredients. The service however, while adequate, was nothing special. Our waitress was quick and polite, but not very friendly. I'd like a friendly waitress at a diner, please. Train your staff well on how to treat the customers, it can really change your restaurant. True North has long been a favourite with us. It's a great family friendly place. The jukebox is a hit with kids and all the proceeds go to the IWK, so it's a win-win! We ventured out to Bedford last evening for dinner. Our party of ten was seated quickly as we had a reservation. Drinks and appetizers arrived within 10 minutes of our arrival. After perusing the menu I decided on my favourite item on the menu, the grilled haddock. They do grilled haddock right at True North. It is cooked to perfection and not the least bit dry. Served with steamed vegetables and your choice of mashed potatoes, baked potato, or fries. My husband had the bacon cheeseburger, a thick and perfectly cooked house made patty served with their home cut fries. I think it's consistently good home cooking that your don't have to cook yourself. So I feel that is the the appeal for most. Their pies did look great, and pies are not easy to find around here so keep that in mind! I got the roast beef and it tasted like mom's, so I guess that's good. But I would have rather eat at mom's. Went in with some family from out of town as they had heard True North had some of the best Fish around town. I thought... Really??? When looking for fish in particular the general rule of thumb for me has always been to go to a place that specializes in Seafoood. So they ordered the 2 pc Fish & chips. Portion size was perfect. In fact my Dad had a hard time putting it all away.....and that is not usually the case! I went with the special of the day: Haddock Tips. I really enjoyed these. They were only very lightly coated & that was all they needed. They were superb ;) My portion was OK. I was able to eat it all- so no waste, but prob could have done with 2 or 3 more pieces of haddock. Id have eaten the fish over the french fries! I look forward to making sure to stop in again..... I've eaten here three times in the last six months. First came with a friend for lunch on a sunny day in the fall and a few nights later with my parents on a Friday evening. Both visits were good although I can't remember what I ate! LOL So think it was average both visits. I thought that I wrote this review back at the time, so can only really comment on my most recent visit for Halifax Burger Week on a sunny Sunday around 10am. The The Hogtown Beef Burger (topped with BBQ pulled pork, Swiss cheese, red onion and original coleslaw. $6) was definitely the most flavorful of the five burgers I had already tried during the week. Smaller in size, basic sesame seed untoasted bun, but delicious nonetheless. Service is always pretty friendly. The atmosphere here is awesome in that it's a gigantic old-school 50s diner with jukebox, checkered floor, red leather booths & tables, records on the walls, high ceilings, barstools at the counter, and I'd guess a seating capacity for well over 100. It was probably 1/3 to half full each time I was here. I'd come back anytime. read more

I love this place!! I came here with my mom for lunch one day and fell in love with the cute 50's diner decor. Even the waitresses wear poodle skirts! The menu has your classic selection of burgers, seafood and a unique selection of hot dogs which are ordered in from Coney Island. I had the whistle dog, which for those who don't know, is a hot dog with cheese and bacon, and it was delicious!! The onion rings I had along with it were awesome. Mom had a burger and fries and was very happy with it. All the menu items looked great and there was a really nice selection of homemade desserts that would be great to come in for some afternoon. Great little spot, finaly decided to try true north diner this weekend after living in Bedford for more then 6 years and was pleasantly surprised. The food was very good, I had the Basinview quad with fries and my husband had the classic cheeseburger, both were very good, the meat patties tasted fresh and the fries were hand cut and also good. I also ordered a couple pieces of pie to go (coconut cream and apple) and I have to say I've definitely had better but they weren't horrible. We've been here several times, mostly because the kids love it and they get to eat for free some days (Mon-Wed?) which is a BIG help on our pocketbook, especially when the kids LOVE to go to restaurants on occasion. I really enjoy the food, the atmosphere is entertaining, prices are reasonable. Here's the thing, it is absolutely FREEZING COLD in there, be sure to bring a sweater. And also, I find, in my opinion, it may not be the most sanitary place... not enough for me to ever worry about and it's probably just because the building itself is old that makes me feel that way. This is probably one of the coolest restaurants around to go to. The diner is decorated to give off a classic diner feel from the 60's. There's even a fully functioning juke box with a great variety of classic hits, and even better all those quarters put into it go to the IWK Children's Hospital in Halifax. The food is great, nothing extraordinary like you might find at bigger franchised restaurants but it's probably some of the best home style meals around. All their ingredients are as fresh as possible sources from local markets when possible. This is defined a great restaurant to take the kids to, to give them an unique experience that can't be experienced at almost all restaurants nowadays. read more
