Arrived at 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon. Restaurant about half full and several waitresses behind the counter. Was seated at a table and then...nothing. Menu on the table, but no waitress EVER came to our table. No water, no nothing. We waited 15 minutes and still no waitress. We came here for lunch after being at Queensland beach. It was about a 10 minute wait from the time we arrive until we had our food in front of us. The staff was great and came back several times to see if everything was okay (shout out to Nicki). Our food was about 5-7 minutes (we didn't take too long to order ) and was hot when it came (I had to wait for the Rubin to cool down a bit). The sandwich tasted great and there were a lot extras on the potato skins. The bill is what you'd expect for what we ordered and although not a"bargain" not high (we didn't eat at fast food). normally I go to Vernon's diner for a special night out as it is my girlfriends favorite resterant and is 45 min away from home. Its usually good. It's been a year since I've been there and it seems to have gone drastically downhill, I ordered the signature thunder bird chicken burger with sweet potatoes fries for a side. To my dismay when my food came out there was a tiny pathetic looking amount of sweet potato fries on my plate and a surprisingly small burger with and even smaller peice of chicken in and the taste was no better. The burger was salty and very lacking in the taste you'd expect from a 18 dollar burger, nothing special about it at all and as I'm looking around at everybody else in the resterants heaping plates of delicious looking food I couldn't help to think I was getting ripped off. To top it all of when I expressed my disappointment to my waitress her answer was oh I've never had the thunderbird burger guess you should have had the fish that you asked about before deciding on the burger. This experience put a very bad taste in my mouth for Vernon's diner and I will be thinking long and hard about other option before going back again. read more

We have been to Vernon's Diner several times for dine in. This evening at 5pm we decided to order take out. We planned to order the 18 piece Fried Chicken Family bundled. This is advertised on their website for $45.95. We get to the restaurant to place our order and the sign says $69.99. We ask the person at the take out window and show her the price on the website. She called a manager and we showed her the price on the website. The manager was rude and condescending to us and said the website wasn't updated. She said if we clicked on the link it would have the correct price. We did that and there was no price showing for the 18 piece of chicken. By this point the manager had already taken off. This is a $25 difference in price. We drove out from Sackville to buy supper for the family. It is not our fault your website wasn't updated and after travelling our to the Diner we feel the price on their website should be honored. Otherwise that soundslike false advertising to me. Also, when someone has a concern the manager could do a better job at listening to the concern and not just treat them rudely and walk away. This was one of our favorite places, but after the way we were treated today it will be a long time before we return. read more

3.5 for my most recent visit on an overcast Sunday morning in April. I was the first customer of the day and the staff forgot to unlock the front door. LOL The open sign was on, so I waited and they apologized profusely for the minute I had to wait. I took a booth and the service was great as usual. Tried the Avocado Eggs Benny this time ($12.95 two poached eggs served on a baked avocado, topped with bacon, chives, hollandaise). It was very good and filling, a nice change from the usual English Muffin. Frozen home fries with diced peppers and onions were decent. I think one other customer was all that showed up in the half hour or so that I was there, so imagine it's later in the morning that the place gets busier. I'll be back! read more

We went to Vernon's Diner one night for dinner. The decor was awesome! Car on the top, 50's style diner,jukebox, and stuff, looked good. The issues started with the staff! The staff stood around most of the time, talking to each other, standing around the bar area, just being seen, and not doing a hell of a lot. There were empty tables, while people waited with not a lot of effort to make sure they were seated or update them on when their table would be ready. I really questioned why so many wait staff! I know they are busy, but it's not a big restaurant, and there were a lot of staff on hand. Them standing around made me think, there really wasn't enough work for all of them, or they really were doing anything. The kicker was, there were a lot of empty tables just sitting there empty while a lot of us were waiting and wondering why people weren't being seated! Were they reserved for VIP's? Was there something wrong with the tables? They looked clean, so it's was a mystery as to why they were not being seated for use. Perhaps the mindset was, if we don't seat people, and create a lineup, then we look busy, which will draw people in. Maybe I'm wrong! The food came, which took about a little over 30 mins. My wife got pountine, which was fries, with gravy and cheese curds added. Now, I had a plate of fries, and I think Vernon is paying premium price for his fries because they were spread all over the plate to look like it covered the whole plate with our main "food" put on top over the fries! I don't know any other place that does this except here. I am not sure if this is part of the presentation or not, but I ended up, taking my main dish off the top of the fries, and moving the fries all to one side so that I could properly eat my main dish. This seemed to be the most assinine way to present a dish. Just put the fries on the side like everyone one else does! Your a 50's diner, not Wolfgang Puck's! And be a little generous with the fries, you make them look like more then they are when you spread them across the dish, and you don't get a lot! Fries are a cheap side, so don't be cheap in giving them out! Remember the 50's when you got what you paid for, well that's one thing this 50's diner had forgotten with their portions! WW read more

My first visit to Vernon's was shortly after it opened. It took 30 minutes to get 1 milkshake! The staff were very disorganized but we assumed our bad experience had to do with working out the wrinkles. Sadly our second visit recently didn't prove to be much better. We ordered take-out so we could sit outside with our dog. The take-out server had her drive thru headset on the whole time we ordered and I had to repeat the order several times until she finally got it all (only 2 items). The food was all homemade and we were so excited to dig into our burger and fish cakes with beans. When we opened our bag we didn't find any beans and when we finally got our order of beans it was just a small ramekin. A bit disappointing considering the dish was called "fish cakes and beans". Our first time at Vernons Thunderbird Diner i ordered the half chicken dinner which was raw and undercooked in spots. Our waitress was very nice and friendly and had the kitchen make a new plate for me. They provided me with a free piece of pie as an apology. I get mistakes happen and was satisfied with how this situation was handled. The second time i ordered takeout and got the fish and chips, only to drive all the way home and find out i wasn't provided any tartar sauce which was disappointing. Wanting to give this establishment another chance I ordered there for a third time (takeout again) only to be given the complete wrong meal. They told me it would take 10 minutes to make the correct meal.. i waited 25 minutes and was not offered anything for my troubles except the old meal they gave me which was now cold and not what i wanted. My boyfriend also got something (we were having a date night) and he offered to wait for me to get my food so we couldn't even eat together. I told him to go ahead and eat his food so it wouldn't get cold. Not a good time. Needless to say, my experiences were less then satisfactory and i will not be going back there again. read more

I took my daughter here for brunch and it was an awesome experience from start to finish. I had the avocado eggs Benedict and she had a burger. My eggs were cooked exactly as I asked and the avocado was perfect. We finished off with milkshakes to go. We played 2 songs on the jukebox, but the volume was turned down half way through the first song, so we could barely hear it. Give them another couple months to figure this business out. We went 3 weeks after opening (June 2017) and it was not a smooth operation. We've been watching them build this place for months, and I've been pretty excited to have a diner nearby, which may have contributed to our disappointment. - tip: way smaller than it looks from the outside - if the parking lot is half full, it's a 20 minute wait for a table. - when we arrived (1pm) we were warned of a 20 minute backup in the kitchen, which turned out to be more like 45+ minutes - we were not warned that *only* breakfast was available until 3pm as part of Sunday brunch, which strains the definition of "brunch" to the breaking point... They had 3 lunch items (club, fish&chips,burger) on the menu, and 90% of the food coming out was one of those 3. - food was mixed. Some was diner-good, some was diner-bad. The burger was charred and dry, the fries were limp and undercooked, the coleslaw was flavourless. The club was above-average, the fish and chips as expected. The shake was superb. - prices very reasonable and portion sizes generous. I've uploaded pictures of the menu. 10 minutes after we ordered, our server came over to tell us abruptly that high chairs were not permitted at booths so she'd have to take our high chair. (The host sat us there with the high chair we needed for our 6-month old, so not sure why this was suddenly an issue). She suggested we could hold our daughter instead. We politely declined, explained we needed our hands to eat, and suggested we could move tables if it was a big issue. She came back, and fortunately someone had the intelligence to give us permission to remain where they'd seated us. It was telling of their collective inexperience that options weren't explored before bringing this up with the customer. It was a sour note. That was the last time we saw our server until she came to clear plates - no refills, no ketchup, no "how is the food". There seemed to be plenty of staff on hand so not sure why my glass was empty for 30 minutes. It's all fixable - I'm hoping through direct feedback and reviews like this they can figure out how to be a great diner. I'll try again in 2018. read more

Ok so I am not one to complain and I was really hungry for Breakfast. I was travelling to get my second Covid 19 Booster... I understand the business part of it all but $13.99 for Breakfast rates with a Halifax Restaurant not where you are located. The coffee that you serve is terrible and bitter. I told the waitress this morning and she offered to bring me a new cup. It was slightly better but not amazing. The coffee grounds must be too heavy of a package for the 9 cup brew pot that you use. Or the water is not hot enough...or nit sits too long as too much coffee is being made ...but to no avail way too strong and bitter. Maybe you should try an alternative brand to what you are using. Second I did not wait a long time for my meal...an all day breakfast but....the eggs, toast, and sausage were cold...the Home Fries were warm at best. The 2 breakfast sausages had been Deep Fried and did not present well as a grilled sausage. The Beans were served in a commercial black plastic 2 oz container and were dry and crusty on the top. Normally this breakfast should be served with 3 sausage especially with the size of the sausage served... breakfast is subject to a low rating as the restaurant was busy with people being served in an orderly fashion, thus my food should have been fresh and hot which it was not...@ a $19.53 bill with coffee, tax and tip should be much less. I can see that there is a huge overhead with building and fixed expenses but surely for Breakfast or an all day breakfast...your prices could be more moderate for the product received. Had dinner here recently and was not impressed. We waited for 10 minutes before being acknowledged by any the staff as many staff kept walking by. I got the fried chicken, my chicken was too hot to eat and the mashed potatoes were cold. Bizarre to have such contradictory temperatures on one plate. My partners milkshake was delicious however his hot turkey sandwich was okay at best. I found the food was nothing better than what I could make at home in half an hour. What bothered me more was the way the hostess treated our server. She verbally chastised her in front of many customers about cleaning the wrong 6 seater table first. The tables seemed to be the same and I don't know why the hostess was so insistent on the group of customers sitting at one table over the other. Our server was wonderful and a hard worker. Yes they have 'kinks' to work out, a little patience is necessary waiting to be seated, and sometimes a little more for the food. But if you're in no rush, we've loved the food. The Take-Out window 'rules' made us laugh a bit. Burgers were fine to order.....they can go into a container, but not sandwiches or scollops. Not sure why not, and the friendly counter person couldn't tell us......it's just what he was instructed from the kitchen. There was a race to get my scallop order in.....before they ran out again, .....our lovely waitress said........so that was a bit of a game to play. (I get why no owner wants to over stock on pricy scallops, lots of other yummy choices.) But we will go back, again and again. This is a couple of local guys building a business, all new businesses need to find their sea legs, so give them another try. I was in here last night and it was awesome. Big huge drive-in style parking lot, great for a few cars to park side by side with the windows down. The staff was awesome friendly, but still getting to know their job. They will hit their stride. Very disappointed by our first trip to the diner. Like the author of the review that has been deemed "not recommended" by Yelp (?), we watched as this enterprise took shape with high hopes. Unfortunately, the concept is good, the execution terrible. We went today (Canada Day) after waiting several weeks for the start-up "kinks" to be worked out. Also, hoping that it would not be so crowded on a long weekend. Were seated promptly, had coffee and ordered within :10. Then we waited...45 minutes for our food to arrive. Our server kept checking in and eventually said that our bill would be reduced by 50% because of the wait. I ordered the crab cake breakfast, and it was inedible except for the poached eggs and home fries (which were not supposed to come with this dish). The crab cakes were pasty and flavourless. The toast was cold as was the butter on it. When I asked the server about the beans that were supposed to be part of this menu item, she said that she would get some right away. She delivered them about :10 later...right out of the microwave, in which they had been incinerated to a crusty, dry mess. I ate half an egg and decided to give up and eat at home. One of my companions ordered the breakfast poutine. I tried one piece of the cheese curd - yuck! - cold and not fresh. Apparently the fries, gravy and bacon were fine.My other companion enjoyed her cinnamon bun "French toast" - basically a cinnamon bun covered in whipped cream and syrup. I asked the server to take my meal off our bill, explaining why. She agreed readily - I wonder if this happens a lot? I will watch this space to see if things improve but there are other options for eating out in the area - Edible Matters, Lefty's - and I suggest that you will be happier choosing one of those. read more

After several very positive experiences at Vernon's, tonight's (August 17) was very different. So much so, that I am beginning to see the reasoning behind so many less positive reviews. From the time we placed our order, not more than 2 minutes passed before our food arrived. There is no way in hell that fresh food for 4 people could be prepared that quickly. Food had to have been cooked in advance. I had the fried clams. Actually, I had exactly 11 rubbery and soggy clams on my plate. Very disappointing for the $15.95 price tag. French fries were over cooked and dry. My wife had fish & chips. The fish was dry and over cooked. I expressed my concerns to the manager on duty. He tried to assure me that they cook everything fresh. I am not buying that. There is no way that food was cooked fresh, after our order was placed. He basically blew off my concerns and complaints. So much for good service. We will not likely be back at Vernon's. Save your money. read more

Second time at Vernon's, had excellent corned beef hash. Very satisfied with food, service was prompt and friendly. First time I was there, couple months ago, I had a cheeseburger. It was good as well. I have to try the fried chicken, I'm told it's one of their specialties.
