We came here right at opening for breakfast and there was already a decent amount of people starting their day here with a meal. The staff was warm and welcoming and seated us right away. Even though it was breakfast, I like that their menu offered some lunch options in case you're looking for something more heartier. The food is fresh, tasty and well-seasoned. I ordered the seafood chowder which was delicious and included tons of seafood. The breakfast options are plentiful, but whatever you do, be sure to try their blueberry lavender jam! It's so delicious and made fresh in-house with local blueberries. It was so good, that I wanted to buy a jar, but couldn't since I had a long flight afterwards and it needed refrigeration. Much has changed since we previously lived in Halifax, and while not the most seismic of shifts in the grand scheme of things, Black Sheep's upgrade from a tiny space on Dresden to the former Red Stag (or Alexander's if you're old enough) space was noticeable nonetheless. We came by on a quiet weekday evening in the lead up to the holidays, and the menu was as diverse and creative as ever. The small plates were calling to us - and as always, they let us try as much as possible. The ricotta toast light and bright, with layers of seasonal savouriness. Tender slivers of poached pear, spiced walnuts, watermelon radish and arugula came together for a wonderful mix of tastes and textures, and a fig balsamic glaze brought further sweetness and richness. My wife and I have always been fans of dahl curries, and Black Sheep's presentation was next level, or even multiple levels, for what is normally not a particularly visually appealing dish. Seared halloumi was perched on top, surrounded by a colourful mix of papadam, raita, pickled fennel and red onion, and cilantro. The resulting composition was an enjoyable spin on this dish, while still sticking respectfully close to its roots. I first came across ćevapi/ćevapčići at a Bosnian grocery/restaurant in Ottawa, and loved the grilled, casing-less sausages, and how they paired with accoutrements like ajvar (a red pepper and eggplant sauce), red onions, and flatbread. When I saw it on a restaurant menu in Halifax, it was an automatic "yes"! The little pork sausages had a great char from the grill, and had a rustic grain to the meat, but were still quite tender and juicy. The extra bits complemented them well, with the vegetal freshness of the ajvar, some tartness from the tomatoes and pickled red onion, and a salty pop from the feta. Last but not least was an order of fries. Since they opened, Black Sheep's hand-fries have consistently been some of the best in the city, and their iconic squid ink mayo still makes for delish dipping - with a goth vibe. I hope Black Sheep is doing well in their new digs, because the food that they're making is still as destination-worthy as ever, and now they have the space to match it. read more

Still great -- two years later. I make a point of coming to Black Sheep every time I'm in Halifax. Whether for breakfast or dinner I've never had anything other than a perfect meal. One of my favorite approaches is to swing by in the evening and sit at the bar. You get the same menu (with faster food delivery) and you can chat and visit with the staff and the other guests. Everything I've had here is great, though I think the best approach is to order a few small plates and give yourself the chance to try a wide mix of flavors. The dishes all were presented beautifully, the food was great and the server was prompt Don't sit on the roof unless you're prepared to (probably) have someone sit in the sun. Black Sheep was our very last stop for a meal in Halifax before we headed off for our flight home. It was a Sunday morning, and I had this restaurant on my list for at least one visit. The restaurant is located in the beautiful old Alexander Keith's brewery building, on the left side of the open atrium. On a previous day walking around the city, we noticed the rooftop dining area they had. The weather was really nice in August, so we were able to be seated on the rooftop. This place is really top notch, and that dining space on the roof is beautiful. They have a full second bar up there, in addition to the main bar on the first floor. I opted for the quiche, which was baked into a nice little short round crust... a bit like a little pie. It had red pepper, mushroom, ricotta, cheddar, mozzarella, and gouda. What a great breakfast dish! I chose the salad as my side, and that was very fresh and lightly tossed with a great vinaigrette. My wife ordered the Diner Breakfast, and we both could not get over how good the toasted focaccia was with a house made blueberry lavender jam. Good grief. She really loved the Greek sausage patty, too. I wish we could have tried the regular lunch or dinner here, because brunch was superb. Maybe next time! read more

I ordered a lobster ravioli for 42.55 CAD(with taxes). It comes with only 6 raviolis. I guess it's like 7 dollars a pop. The bread is awful, it supposed to be focaccia, but it have no air bubbles and it's heavy and dense as a brick. I had Olive Garden bread stick that's light and softer than this. The part that's inky black is just normal bread crumb added with squid ink. I honestly don't even know what's the purpose of this besides makes it looks pretty. At least try to use rye bread crumbs instead to add some flavor, because by the time I've got the dish the bread crumbs already turned soggy. It took forever for food to get here, and the environment is too loud I had to yell to speak to the person next to me. Black Sheep Sunday morning brunch. On my birthday. As a vacationer in Halifax, where would I go? According to Yelp, the Black Sheep is one of the best places in Halifax to get brunch, including Eggs Benedict, one of my favourite brunch meals. From my hotel room I walked to Black Sheep. The cheerful hostess told me "no problem" getting a seat. I was seated and quickly met by my server. Before I had the opportunity to open the menu, he asked me if I wanted still or sparkling water. I said sparkling. After reviewing the menu, I ordered a 3 ounce Caesar ($15.50) in a pint glass. For my birthday brunch, I ordered the "brisket Eggs Benedict" as there is no "classic" Eggs Benedict with ham or bacon on their menu ($19). Choice of sides was salad, fries or a combo of salad/fries. I chose the salad. The sparkling water (in a plain blue 1 litre bottle), Caesar (in a small glass, not the pint glass I requested) & food all came out quickly. The Eggs Benedict were interesting. Bit of a vinegar flavour to the sauce, and while I didn't love the Brisket Benny, I did not hate it either. Nothing special about the Caesar. It did not arrive in the pint glass I requested, rather in a smaller glass. A little watery, which is surprising given that it was suppose to be 3 ounces of vodka. After a couple sips of my sparkling water, and having completed my meal, I requested the bill. Much to my surprise, I was charged $5.50 for "house sparkling." Of note: when the server asked me if I wanted sparkling or still water, the waiter made no mention that I would be charged $5.50 for the sparkling water. Had he told me so, I would not have requested water. Very bad on the part of Black Sheep! With applicable taxes, the bill came to $46. And what is up with not accepting American Express cards? Like is that even legal in the restaurant/bar business? On a scale of one to five, where one is terrible and five is excellent, I give the Black Sheep a two. Well so far the reviews are all 5 star so you're probably thinking that can't be true. But I can't find a fault with this place unless you count having to climb a whole lot of stairs to get to their lovely rooftop garden. Warning to anyone in a wheelchair! Despite the sign on their front door there is no access to the restaurant. My partner and I were very excited to eat here. He was in a terrible accident leaving him wheelchair bound. After calling around to find the perfect place to have his first meal at a restaurant since the accident 8 months ago. We called black sheep to make sure they were wheelchair accessible the women on the phone cheerfully said yes! Excited we got ready and headed to the restaurant. When we arrived we found that their front door had a sign saying 'wheelchair and stroller access to the right.' when we walked around to another entrance with a small steep ramp going into the building, only to find out once we were in there was another staircase to the restaurant. Confused I called back asking where their wheelchair entrance was. The same waitress said 'oh we see wheelchair accessible once you are in the restaurant..' frustrated I said that's not wheelchair accessible then at all! How is someone in a wheelchair supposed get in?' the women on the phone barely seemed to care. It was a very disappointing day. read more

The "eggs benny" I ordered was so disgusting. It came with this black substance in a dish that was odourless but looked like crude oil and there was no explanation as to why it was there. "Ask the staff", one might argue, but the staff were too busy fiddling around on their smartphones like teenagers to pay any attention to the restaurant. The surroundings are dark and reminded me of a cross between an arts college and Squidward's house. Bizarre music plays in the background that limits the ability to converse with friends without having to really raise your voice. Price was too high for the quality of the food and service, and did I mention the slowness of the order arrivals? Never again.
