Good service. Nice oysters on the half shell. And a lovely bowl of noodles with tofu. Best of all Barrington Street is away from the waterfront and the tourist hubbub. Very quiet. Towards the end of the dinner the gentleman eating alone at the next table started telling us what Canada needs to do to diversify its international trade. This was like my maybe 5th time here in the last 8 years- I always enjoy it as it is between semi fine dining to urban chic- So I never feel over or underdressed even if I decide to pop in last minute- We had a reservation today with my son so that was good - they were great to even accommodate us being over an hour past our original reservation- I did call though lol So my son had the kids chicken fingers n fries and a drink plus cookie - he enjoyed and still had leftovers from the kids menu- I decided order something more different than the usual burgers which are great, but I felt like something different- I'm not a huge meat eater or even much seafood or veggies person but I opted for the Boneless Beef short rib meal- it originally came with : gravy/ winter veggies/ potato purée and onion ring garnish- I requested gravy on the side/ no puree but regular mash and more carrots than other veg like Brussels - they fully accommodated and it was everything I could ask for!! Great little place close to our hotel. The service was fantastic with super friendly staff. We overstayed our welcome talking well beyond the 9pm time. Cute place with nice size menu, with both servers fun to talk to. The Kale Caesar was good but not great. The Burrata Salad was very good except for the Burrata! The pickled asparagus was unusual and very good as were the olives, zucchini and tomatoes but the cheese texture and seasoning were lacking. The Scallops with Arancini were very good but the Lobster Gnocchi for me just good. The place isn't necessarily a 4 but it wouldn't be right to rate it a 3. While we intended to have a lobster roll, we decided to have the calamari, seafood stew, biscuits, and finished it off with the ice cream sandwich. The calamari was a large portion, tender, and well seasoned. If you like calamari you will love this. The seafood stew was absolutely delicious. I haven't had a seafood stew filled with this much seafood. The flavor, texture, and smell of this bowl of amazingness was unmatched to anything I've had before. Our train from Montreal was almost two hours late and we had an 8 o'clock dinner reservation. It was hubby's pick and also his birthday. We called and they seated us late-closing time at 9. Our waiter, Muzi and everyone was so welcoming and gracious. Our green goddess wedge salad, seafood chowder, and stuffed salmon were absolutely delicious. After walking around the Citadel and downtown, we came across 2 Doors Down. We had the old school smash burger and the smoke house smash burger and two nine locks beers. The burgers were awesome. The first thing our server said when we asked for a table was that the kitchen would be closing...in a little over an hour. This was undoubtedly well-intentioned but immediately conveyed a sense that our business wasn't entirely welcome. Service was generally good despite that, and our server did recommend a good cider for my partner. I had the haddock tacos; the fish in each taco was amply sized, but the dish included just two tacos, the tomato salsa was a little bland, and the side of fries was underseasoned. Prices were reasonable, service was good and food was delicious We shared 1. Fish tacos: crispy and with a large chunk of halibut topped with salsa, guac, onions and some radish, these were very good! 2. Burger: don't remember the exact one (had the smoked bacon one), and they have 2 burgers on the menu, but it was delicious! 3. Kimchi chilli cheese fries: this was soo good. Loaded with chilli and ground beef, it came out piping out and was so satisfying The only beef I had was that any mains did not come with sides (sides like fries, salad, etc were +$5), but the sides we saw we're very shareable in terms of portion size. So a side of fries will probably be able to serve 2. Highly recommend this place, for lunch and beers at least. read more

This was my first time visiting Halifax and the first night dinner choice was 2 Doors Down. This place is fancier than you think. I was expecting a crawly pub with bar food, drinks, etc., but was met with high end cocktails and food for pretty much the same price. It's a classy place with classy music but you can get a really good burger/tacos. The Smokehouse Burger is fantastic and so are the Crispy Haddock Tacos. Drinks are strong, too. Would not recommend the Ferraro Rocher cheesecake for dessert, though. Leaving 4 stars only cuz the food took a good while to make it to the table. Would absolutely come again! read more

Reviews made us come back the following night and same table was available and a different hostess seated us at the same table. Turns out the menu was a week old. So I would recommend management should update Yelp and other review sites. Even though new menu the Lobster Gnocchi's were sold out. Menu has a small selection and shouldn't run out. Enjoyed the Kale Caesar, Shrimp Tacos and the Old School Burger. One of the best tasting suppers I've had dining out in Halifax in months. Shrimp were cooked perfectly, burger was soooo tasty; just the right amount of food for two people without leaving feeling bloated or "too" full! Service was very good. FAMILY VACAY! You guys know how that is. The 'rents and I went on a week-long sweep of the Canadian Midatlantic Provinces during which we ate at a wide variety of establishments - from fine dining to local shacks. 2 Doors Down was 2 Hands Down the best of them all! During our first night in Halifax, we of course perused Yelp and ended up at 2DD. With their inventive, seasonal menu, classy yet casual ambiance, and downright delicious cuisine, this fantastic find was a highlight of the entire journey. So much so that it was difficult not to return the second night we had in the city! Halifax hipster but not too presumptuous. Locally-sourced ingredients and rotating options. Every night they boast different "bar bites" on offer which are written out on chalkboard walls. We started out with the mac-n-cheese bites ($5). Warm, cheesy interior with a crisp, crumbly exterior, these nuggets revved up my childhood fascination with the comfort food. Even the ketchup served alongside is housemade. No Kraft and Heinz here, people. This is the real stuff. For entrees, we went splitsville with the lobster bruschetta, farmer's market soup on special, and fried chicken. The lobster bruschetta was loaded up with mounds of lobster as well as a creamy sauce which complemented the cool crustacean flawlessly. All this served over a large, toasted foccachia slice left us completely satisfied yet somehow still drooling for more. The lobster rolls we had during the rest of the trip just saddened us in comparison. The tomato-based soup was the special of the day and was loaded up with a ton of veggies including asparagus and corn. This tasted very fresh but was not my favorite dish of the day. The fried chicken was spectacular. I'm from Georgia, so I know my Southern food. The chicken piece, albeit a bit smaller than I'm used to (which shows their emphasis on local), was fried flawlessly - light yet crispy with so much flavor. Drizzle on some of that honey sauce to complete the savory-sweet sensation. It was accompanied by potato salad as well as crave-worthy corn bread. I just need to know - how did they learn down-home cookin' in Canada? And make it (gasp!) perhaps even better? The dessert options at 2DD also rotate and are all served in mason jars, as described by our waitress. Looking to continue the childhood craving throwback, we opted for the s'mores pudding. Layer of fudgey brownie chunks, chocolate pudding, whipped cream, and graham cracker crumbs were covered by a cloud of mini marshmallows just slightly toasted to get that warm, gooey s'mores taste and feel. But better. After this revelation of a dessert parfait, I will never be able to enjoy the traditional sandwich version in quite the same way. And somehow I'm all right with that. Looking for a truly unique and enjoyable dining experience? If you said no, I'm sorry. You're lame. If so, check out 2DD right away. Just don't be too heartbroken when you find yourself unsatisfied by other dishes you try afterward. You've been forewarned. read more

Looking to grab a bite and a drink before getting our board game on, I stopped at Temple Bar with my wife and a couple friends. The sister restaurant to Chives and 2 Doors Down, the design is closer to that of 2DD. There's a mix of brick, cement pillars, and re-purposed wood tables, with a warm palette. All in all a pretty modern feel. A long bar dominates the relatively small room, with a handful of tables and another drinking rail running parallel to the bar. The bar was pretty quiet, with just a couple tables occupied on Christmas Eve eve. We were seen to quickly, with our drink orders being taken after we took a minute to peruse their diverse list of drinks. I started off with the enticing Black Cherry Flip, which is made of bourbon, house cherry syrup, egg white foam, lemon juice and bitters. Served in a martini glass, it was a bit sweeter than I typically go for, but it went down quickly. Round two was the comedically named Silent Treatment - made from a mix of rums, muddled pineapple, squeezed orange juice, and Propeller ginger beer. It had a nice tang to it, but was the pineapple was a bit too loud. Their food menu is almost too lean, but has a few tempting options like meatballs, arancini, and spaghetti bolognaise. We ended up ordering a cheese plate and the mushroom arancini. The cheese plate had a generous spread of four cheeses, including a goat, aged cheddar, gouda, and blue, as well as baguette halves for spreading. The cheeses were really enjoyable, but the bread didn't come pre-cut and took a significant amount of sawing to cut slices off with the basic steak knife we were given. The arancini was a big winner though. The mushroom risotto was creamy and had a great flavour, and contrasted nicely with the crisp crust. That wasn't it though, as it was served in a braised brisket sauce, which helped make up for the fact that there just one arancini. Service was spot on and friendly. From what I can tell Temple seems to be having some issues finding its niche in the Halifax food/bar scene, other than being a holding area for 2DD customers waiting for a table. However, the drinks are destination worthy and the food is good, if in need of some polishing in execution, and a dash more selection. read more
