The Hubs and I wanted to try some craft beer while at Halifax without having to go to each microbrewery and Stillwell seems to fit the bill. They have 12 beers on tap, and various beers on cans and bottles. Food seems to be mostly sharable appetizers. We tried: - Propeller Galaxy (6.5% $7.6 for 16oz): hazy IPA style, simple, a hint of hoppy. - Trailway Voyager (7.8% $7 for 12 oz): like a hazy IPA, citrus, sweet, smooth. If you're looking for a Bud Light, this is not the place for you. But if you enjoy a broad range of local craft beers paired with really good food, you might find this to be the place for you. Although I didn't count them, they menu included about 15 local beers, from lagers and ales to sours and two cast conditioned choices. If you can't decide, they offer 4 drink flight samplers. I had the house smoked porchetta toast, so good. The menu isn't broad but every item looked really good. Service is friendly and professional, very knowledgeable about the beer list. They offer hard liquor as well and I wish they focused on local fair as well since Nova Scotia is producing some great spirits. Not much to find a fault here, if you like beer! read more

Best tap house in Halifax. An outstanding variety of craft beers sourced with care and rotated frequently. We stopped here twice for bites and beer and also made it over to the Stillwell Beer Garden as well. while the beers were awesome, the food was completely delicious. Best corn dog ever. After two visits this is for sure in rotation for next time I find myself in the area. Slight downside for the music and the staff on the second night. The music was so bad I witnessed several groups pop in and roll right back out. The staff, that was so cool the first night, was replaced by a couple who seemed to just barely care to be at all helpful. We placed a food order that took about 45 minutes to come out, on a relatively slow night. They have a good variety of beers on tap, including IPAS, Stout, Pils, Cider, sour beer, and Europeans Tyler beers such as doppelbock and Schwarz bier. Recently bereft of any of the big restaurant and bar openings of 2013/early 2014 (ie. 2 Doors Down, EDNA, Field Guide, Stillwell senior), Halifax was eagerly anticipating Stillwell's ambitious beer garden that they planned to open up right on Halifax's boardwalk, and last week that wait ended. Located directly behind Sackville Place, the Stillwell crew put in a lot of work converting the little amphitheatre to a useable space for a bar. There's now 20ish picnic tables, although the levels of the amphitheatre still comprises most of their seating. What is probably the most functional shipping container in the city (sorry, I Heart Bikes!) operates as their bar and kitchen. Painted fire engine red, it's sure to stand out on the boardwalk no matter what the weather is and has a very cool, laser-cut metal work of their funky logo. Given the huge capacity of the beer garden, they're keeping things relatively simple here, with 10 beers available on my visit, written in familiar chalk of course, and three locally-made sausages for your non-liquid desires. I thought pretzels were going to be one of their fixtures, so I was a bit disappointed to see them absent, although an empty spot on the menu suggested I may have arrived too late. There was a cool-ish day, so we clung to a sliver of light as the sinking sun peeked around the corner of the office building. Seated on one of the lower levels of the amphitheatre, we chatted and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the boardwalk, including an interesting fellow who put his coffee on a railing and then promptly open-hand slapped it, still filled with coffee, although it luckily went in the opposite direction of us. Given the location here, I think Stillwell will have the double-edged sword that Fickle Frog has - fantastic people watching, but you're going to be right in the thick of it for sketchy people as well. They need to get their garbage/organics/recyclables system sorted out a bit better, as there was only one spot where they had the trifecta of disposal containers and many people were throwing the compostable cups in the garbage despite the note next to it saying not to. Also, if you were wondering, "How do I pee here?" the answer is two porto-potties. Stillwell showed some great entrepreneurial initiative in approaching the WDC to get the beer garden going, and I look forward to many summer days here enjoying beer, people watching and hopefully a pretzel or two. read more

A while back I was in Halifax visiting family. My brother said I am going to take you out for the best fried chicken you have ever had. To which I responded that is a bold statement. Needless to say he took me to Stillwell a quaint indie pub downtown Halifax. As soon I stepped in I loved the place. From the rustic decor to the giant chalkboard menus, to the lineup of craft beer on tap from light to dark along the wall. We tried them all, to take in the full experience. ..and of course ordered this legendary fried chicken. All I can say is I did not say a word through the entire meal as I was totally immersed in the flavor. Have to say my brother was right. 8 months later and I can't wait to go back east and have another bite. To be honest, It's rare to say, but there was not a thing I didn't enjoy about this place. My favorite place in Halifax to grab a drink. Especially if that drink is awesome beer. I was downtown for a weekend event and liked Stillwell so much I managed to cram in three trips. Stillwell is a beer geek's heaven! For any craft brew fan it is MUST try. Interior is minimalist with dark wood and industrial light fixtures yet there are casual influences to stop it from being too harsh. The focus is the beer from microbrews around NS, PEI and Quebec. I went in the late afternoon and there was plenty of seating but I picked the bar so I could get a close look at taps and get some background on new beers. If there is some hipster pretentiousness I must have been in too early experience it; I certainly didn't get it from the staff. I found bartenders were friendly and super knowledgeable. With 12 taps, I recommend getting a flight to your go-to styles and then zeroing in on a pint or two of your favorite. I tried some of the Quebec beers and was damn glad I did. They were unique; each was true to style yet had some individuality. Stillwell was great opportunity to try some of the more distant NS breweries (from Halifax) The menu is eclectic small bites which compliments the beer. The tried the popcorn, fries and the burger. The Atari fries were obviously handcut and the Japanese-flavoured mayo was an excellent accompaniment. They came out almost too hot to eat- just the way I like them! The burger less so as I found it small and the way it was packaged made the bun rest in a pool of grease. Soggy buns are sad buns. The popcorn tasted okay but the huge dusting of parm and pepper just slid off the corn and got all over me, the bar and the floor, so on and so on. Perhaps if the popcorn was tossed with the toppings in a bit of olive oil they'd stick to it and I would have enjoyed it more. Even with 2/3's of the food hits and misses being misses I can't give this place less than top marks. I mean it is all about the beer experience after all. Surprised to see a Belgian Kriek on the beer menu so I just had to order it. Kinda pricey at $19 per bottle but I truly enjoyed it. Stillwell is the go-to spot for craft beer in Halifax for good reason! Twelve revolving taps and three beer engines allow the beer lover to try a fantastic selection of beers, and even a craft cider or two. While there, we worked our way through everything in either the great four beer flights or occasional sleeves. The beer-savvy staff will not serve a cask if it's not up to their standards - I saw a freshly tapped cask replaced by another before it reached a single customer! Although the only food we tried was the excellent dill pickle popcorn (!!!), the very well-priced and thoughtful menu warrants a return visit, especially after seeing the food served up to others around us. Also one of the best chicken; flavour wise, in Halifax for sure. I was sceptical about having it with both the honey AND white kimchi but they paired surprisingly great together. Unreal. By constantly rotating their beers they provide an outstanding and diverse selection of local beers, and their dedication to Canadian craft breweries shows. Their unique bar design doesn't make the selection intimidating, each tap coloured to be (more or less) the colour of the beer, so you can guess what you'd like based on the colours and descriptions. Prices are great, I like that they have smaller pours (5oz tasters and 12oz pours) to keep the price down (6-7$ per 12oz pour). This may upset some people, but keep in mind many of the beers are 9-10% so you're getting good value. And their food is exceptional and affordable. MY NEW FAVOURITE. read more

This is my go-to spot for anything! Friends from away in town, Stillwell! Friday night drink with the husband, Stillwell! Afterwork drink with colleagues, STILLWELL! Hands down, this is one of my top three places to grab a drink and catch up with friends. Now, if you don't drink beer, you may want to look at other great options in the city, but having said that, Stillwell also has wine, spirits, and cider.... but why would you want anything other than beer? (that's my humble opinion). Not only does the beer selection ROCK, the chicken and popcorn are both single handed, my favourite snacks at any pub/bar/gastropub/wine bar/cocktail bar in Halifax. Even when I'm not at Stillwell, I sometimes find myself craving these. The popcorn especially. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, quick, and attentive. The only downside is space, but it's hard to work with such a small room but I think they have laid out the room effectively. This is my go to beer bar in Halifax. Stillwell has a great vibe, and and awesome selection of beer taps that's constantly changing. More of a craft selection of local beers, so you won't find you're cheap domestics here. Price is standard around the city for craft local of ~7.50$ glass. Be sure to pay attention to the oz for each tap, they aren't all the same. The food is also great, I wouldn't recommend coming here at night for dinner, but it's great stuff to nibble on while you're drinking. I personally recommend the Tokyo Fries with Atari Mayo; nice peppery fries with a nicely spiced mayo on the side. I'm not sure what's in the Atari Mayo, but whenever we get it we clean out the entire sauce bowl. read more

If you want a diverse selection of beer, look no further. The rotating taps at Stillwell are always filled with interesting brews from around Canada and sometimes further afield. They also have great snack options. I don't think any of them are supposed to be a sub for a full meal, but their fries and burgers definitely satisfy that hunger pang that comes after having a few beers. I've never had something from the menu that I didn't like, and that includes the pickle jar! If you haven't been to Stillwell, it's definitely worth a visit. I had been waiting for the new beer bar in town to open for sometime, especially after meeting the owners at an event earlier in the fall. A trip with friends to Stillwell Beer Bar on Barrington Street in Halifax happened during a Saturday afternoon. We arrived shortly after they opened at four o'clock and it was already starting to fill up. On entry you see a low key bar with tables, chairs, light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and of course the bar. As I explored a little further there was shelves in the corner with a bunch of vinyl records, a collection of "empties" and downstairs there are some old school video games and even some old city bus seats. I liked the decor, it made me feel at home. The bar takes up the bulk of one of the walls and behind it is twelve taps of primarily Maritime craft beer with an odd wildcard thrown in. The wall containing the taps is used like a chalkboard with each tap labelled with all its information and wiped and the next one added. One thing Stillwell is arrange the taps number one to twelve with the beers going for light to dark. The snack fare was varied and different from the usual pub grub, the dozen items varied widely and is changed often they tell me. I got the oysters and fries with "atari" sauce and both were absolutely delicious. The staff and owners were very friendly and attentive and kept us satisfied. For fans of real ale (aka Craft ale) you really can't do much better than this place. Bare, wooden furniture, unadorned, this is the most Irish bar in the city, though that's probably unintentional. You can be served at the table or at the bar and I would recommend the latter, as the bar staff are very knowledgeable and you can peruse the wall written menu more readily. The beers (and ciders) rotate regularly and there is something for everyone, usually several somethings. The cherry on the cake, however, is the presence of three (?) beer engines, meaning the fruits of at least some of the brewers' arts are delivered without added CO2. I really couldn't care less what the menu is like as this is entirely peripheral to Stillwells' purpose. (It's pretty good actually). It gets fairly packed with the after work crowd and you'll usually end up sharing one of the large tables with strangers, though thanks to the excellent and sometimes very strong beers on offer, you won't be strangers for long. read more

Common seating tables at the front of the place kept it interesting, while the bar looked like a fun place to saddle up to. What surprised me is the quality of the snacks - we had tokyo fries, a couple of the toast options, and one each of double burgers. They were well thought out and prepared well. The burgers are of the diner variety, which is really your best option when confronted with Canadas laws (regarding ground beef having to be cooked well done). While it had a very high BPI (Beards Per Inch) ratio, it still came across as honest and simple. A place for the community to appreciate beer along with some prime noshes. Fried chicken is GOOD. You don't taste the sriracha but its well worth getting. Hot, tender, juicy, delicious. I think that they have all the right ingredients to be a long-term success: the space is on the smaller side and the layout encourages people to stand, or share tables. It gets full fast so get there early. I don't drink beer but I like the idea that they keep switching up the kegs when one runs dry (luckily they have Bulwark on tap so I'm usually covered). We were there last night and a friend of mine pointed out that this would be a good first date spot - you have to order at the bar so it gets rid of the awkwardness of receiving a bill and wondering who will get it. If the person you're with goes up to get a drink and asks what you want, you immediately know they'll be paying for it. Also, the menus is small but delicious and perfect for sharing, so if you wanted to have a quick bite while you're having a drink, you can do so, without the commitment of needing to stay for a long time (if the date is going badly...) I've been meaning to try out their brunch egg sandwich but haven't had a chance yet. This is more my after-work spot :) read more

I was at Stillwell on a Saturday night and I was certainly not in sync with the hipster crowd on hand for the evening (There was more plaid and giant beards than at a lumberjack convention). Perhaps it was that crowd that caused the feeling but I found the place to be snotty and pretentious with absolutely no reason to be that way. Decor is minimal and other than the taps on the wall it could be anyones basement from the concrete floors to the end cut plywood bar with an insufficient amount of sealant to prevent the black mould from growing below the taps. The beer selection was okay but even there there was not really a whole lot exotic and exciting going on. I like that they have a couple of cask selections, a rarity in Halifax, which is why I give it the 3 star rating and I will give the place another try but certainly not a place I loved as there are several places in the city with equally good beer with none of the passive aggressive pretentious (I'm talking to you bartender in the white undershirt with the sleeves rolled ever so carefully) undertones. read more

This review is for the beer, as I didn't order food. As a craft beer lover, this place was right up my alley. They have a great selection on tap and the wood handles on said taps are arranged from light to dark if you don't know what the descriptions are. That being said if you're new to craft beer, the staff is also very helpful and guide you to something you'll like. I had the Uncle Leo's smoked porter and it was delicious. Also had Dieu Duciel, a nice light fruity brew with hibiscus which had a "grapefruity" colour and taste. The prices are pretty reasonable for what you're getting so go check it out. Different concept - going up to the bar and choosing one of 12 microbrewery drafts was really great....and the 'flight' (sampler) was a perfect way to try a number of different beer. The menu has approximately a dozen items - not a large selection but each item was really interesting. The oysters were perfect, the nuts (spicy almonds, vanilla bourbon cashews and fish sauce peanuts) were delicious and the brown sugar/ chilli popcorn was AMAZING!!! What an amazing place! Where to start? It is a cool and chill environment with nice bartenders that do a great job at conversing and engaging their customers. The beer selection is phenomenal. Local beers that are opened at a minimum quantity in order to maintain freshness. They have great deals on flights and the bartenders are very knowledgeable about what they are serving, which is a plus. The food. OMG, the food. To start with I had 2 of their oysters which were quite simply orgasmic. Raw black point oysters with freshly grated horseradish and an amazing kimchi purée to put on top; one of the best oysters I've ever had. I also has the fried chicken that was on top of a bed of pickled radishes that were to die for. They brine the chicken for 24 hours, which made it super flavorful. The meat was tender and the skin crispy, and they drizzled a honeyed sauce on top that was just the icing on the cake. My boyfriend had the burger that had cheese and the mushroom duxelle; the umami flavor was out of this world. He hates mushrooms but he loved this, and I would probably have eaten two if I were him. We also got the popcorn flavored with brown sugar and chili, and the flavor contrast was dynamite! It's like eating spicy kettle corn and it was out of this world. I was tempted to have another bowl. To finish off our meal, we had their rhubarb trifle. It had rhubarb compote, lemon creme, and a cookie crumble on the bottom. So delightful and not overly sweet. Like most people in Halifax, I like this bar. You could say I love this bar even! Although it's always packed in here, and loud, I love the look of the place and the snacks are good. What I enjoy the most is the great selection of craft beers they rotate on their taps. Every time I go in, there is always something new that I haven't tired. New to me anyways, and I like that. I like to be adventurous, if you call ordering a beer you haven't tried before adventure. Then that's me! Ms. Adventurous! Although I have a love/hate relationship with communal seating, in reality I don't mind it that much. I'll share if I have to. Most of Stillwells patrons are pretty cool, so you're most likely sharing your table with a good looking stranger, if not interesting. Best beer bar in Halifax. Nothing beats it for selection of local micro and nano brewed beer. Don't over look their menu, so many great small fair, the burgers are amazing, Atari fries are a must-try. Weekend evenings can be very loud and very busy with standing room only, so if you want a quiet time to sit and enjoy a brew I recommend going early evening. read more

Awesome brews and great food, if I could have a diner burger and Tokyo fried for every meal without feeling like a horrible blob, I would live there. Really great bottle selection and there is always something for everyone on tap. I do kind of wish they had most seasonal selections sometimes(who drinks porter and stout in the summer?) but the rotate the taps so frequently that there is always something new to try. The biggest problem is that it is always SO busy, but that just speaks to how good Stillwell is. Go early or be ready to stand for a long time, getting a table here is a cutthroat business. Beer is pretty pricy, but I think that is a strength for Stillwell, if you don't want to drop more than $50 just get a bite and 2 drinks. The price means I am more likely to savour what I do order and leave wanting more. read more
