a glass of wine on a table

Sweet little wine bar. Got married here. It'll forever be a Halifax treasure to me. The menu rotates enough to keep the each visit fresh while offering opportunity to grab a favourite a couple times before it's rotated out for the season. The wine variety is best in the city and the service knows their stuff. You won't get fluffed into getting some bland house wine. Check it out and chat up the staff. It's a gem!

What a lucky find! I was in town for a couple of days and stumbled on this bar. Braving the cold (froze my southern roots!), I was walking from my hotel to another restaurant. On the way, I heard jazz coming from this bar, decided to stop and managed to grab a seat at the busy bar! The music and vibe were really great. The band played long sets and I was really impressed. The regulars were also very welcoming. It was a great time. The food was pretty good, enjoyed the gnocchi but I'm not sure I agree with calling it a caccio e peppe. I'd have been a little disappointed if I hadn't been enjoying the music so much. BUT the eggnog dessert was delicious. Their wine list really stood out! They have really unique finds from around the world. Too bad I was in town for work and had to limit myself! I hope to be back in a few months and will try to come again.

On a recent trip to Halifax we went to Obladee a couple of times for a few reasons...first, there is a wine from Lebanon that we've not seen anywhere else and was exquisite. We selected it from a good size wine list. Also the charcuterie is set up so that one can choose items from a selection and build your own board. Third, the service is friendly. The atmosphere is candles and dim light and the music was really good both the live music and the other music. Can't really comment on parking since we walked. But I can say we were tempted to go back over and over.

Our yummy customized Cheese & Charcuterie board, with preserves, homemade pickles, & a delicious baguette!

One of the finest wine bars I've ever been in. I really loved it here and if it was in the States, it'd be my regular bar. The vibe is so chill, romantic, relaxed, and cool. We happened to be there during one of their live music nights, and a jazz trio entertained us while we had some wine and a nice conversation. It doesn't seem to be a noisy place, and we could hear each other easily, so it's a great spot for a date or romantic evening. The employees were very sweet and well-educated on all of the wines and foods available, which was fantastic. Their wine list is extensive and comprehensive. But if you're anything like me, you're better off with a flight so you can sample several of their wines at once. Their flights were $15, and we obviously had to try the NS "Loving Local," which featured three of their best wines from Nova Scotia. Perfect for newcomers! After the flight, we realized we loved Benjamin Bridge Nova 7, so we had a couple of full pours. The cheese & charcuterie board was just amazing. For $18 you can choose any three items from their list and customize the board to your liking. It comes with slices of toasted baguette from a local bakery, some condiments, and house-made pickles too. We asked our waitress for recommendations, and we ended up with the Prosciutto di Parma, Andouille Sausage, and I think the Aged Gouda. We also tried the Deep Sea Digby Scallops, because having seafood in Halifax is almost a requirement. They were cooked beautifully, but I only wish there were more than three! Alas. Let me put it this way: we spent 4 nights in Halifax, and we ended up here twice. You should make sure you end up here too.

Toddled in here after a nice meal at Gio, not quite ready to call it a night. It's a really fun space, retro without being too precious about it. My friend and I shared a wine flight and a cheese plate. Decent selection of wines, with some local choices and some unusual ones to try. We had a local rose which was good, and a nice Italian white, and just for fun tried an orange wine, which was a little too funky for our tastes. Cheese plate was yummy. We had good friendly service at the bar. Great place to meet for drinks with friends at the beginning or end of an evening.

Cozy wine bar. You could also ready that as small :) We did pre dinner drinks here. Extensive wine list. A few finger foods. If you sit at the bar, you can watch the lone "chef" prepare everything. Mainly charcuterie selection.

It doesn't take much to realize that this new addition to our city was MADE for me. Wine, cheese and bread? Sign me up. We checked out Obladee with a group of five that then grew to about eight as the night progressed. While there are no reservations, we were able to grab one of the few tables before it filled up (5:30pm on a Saturday). The table had a dangerous slant to it - especially once filled with red wine - and the floor had a suspicious slippery spot, but all was forgotten once we saw the dozens of wines available by the glass, all listed between $6.50-12.50. The servers seemed to work nicely as a team and were all knowledgeable, attentive, and ready to refund our glasses if we didn't like their recommendations. But of course, their recos were to die for. We ordered a smaller board that was fun to share as a group before the owner mistook me for someone named Christophe which then led to a night pretending to be a european gigolo. All in all, Obladee was the restaurant experience that just kept on giving!

The goatmilk fudge -- very, very sweet! More of a pairing piece.

Very classy, cozy place with an incredible selection of wines. Also offered an extensive amount of finger foods to pair with the wine of your choice (which I loved). Very aesthetically pleasing and even had larger table selections and couches for visits with friend groups!

Cheese and delicious wine are the best way to my heart!

This place is a great date spot! Lots of selection and great atmosphere! Plus the service is top notch! If you love wine, and lots of it, you need to try this spot! There is a range fit for anyone and everyone, you can spend 10$ and up depending on taste and preference! But every choice is awesome! The staff are here to help, as I am anything but knowledgable in the world of wine, other than I like to drink it, the staff help me hone in on what I'm looking for! They also have food which only compliments the wine, aka cheese and meat boards. The difference is that the cheese and meat selections are equally amazing. One of the best charcuterie boards in halifax! The only reason I have not given 5 stars is I feel the need to return and do more investigation... Which is really just an excuse to come back! So let's go!!

This place is great but the food is just way overpriced. Go elsewhere for a meal and just go here for the wine before or after.

Peacock Wine Bar - scallops

The scallops were incredible -- crispy outside and cooked to perfection throughout. This place had a very well curated drink menu. So many choices (wish I took pictures). I'm not sure about the parking situation here because we walked from our hotel next door. But it's located on a lovely spot near the water.

As the name suggests, it is a wine bar, so a good selection of local and imported wines. I had the steak tartar, followed by the scallops, and finished with the triamisu affogatto. The steak tartar was the stand out. It didn't come with crackers, so I ordered some foccacia. I really didn't need to. The dill pickle croutons were such a nice touch in flavor and texture. The scallops were interesting...perfectly seared, and all the components of the dish (roasted cauliflower, sour cherry, dill) are good on their own but didn't really come together to form a dish. So it is a bunch of tasty things on a plate that don't really relate to each other, but all good on their own. Finally, the tiramisu...loved the affogatto, and sabayon all worked together beautifully, and it is a large portion, very sharable! Lastly, the service was great. I was solo and felt very well taken care of

Sapori Italian Street Food - Small but mighty - the profiterole

Sapori Italian Street Food

Halifax has never had a shortage of Italian restaurants, with many of them being regarded among the…read morebest fine dining places in the city for years. And while I was in exile in Ottawa for several years, just the downtown has inexplicably added several more Italian spots. Of those though, it was Sapori's casual, street-food-inspired menu that piqued my interest the most (my condolences to the regrettably-named, Sketti and Ball). One day, my wife and I popped in for dinner after work. The elongated restaurant was decently full between regular diners and an solid showing for a pizza-making class. It happened to be Dine Around, so the arancini and square pizza would have to wait, as if there's one thing I like more than street food, it's a deal! Dine Around menus are typically prix fixe with an assortment of choices, and Sapori's was no different. Choose between a few apps, mains and desserts and voila, you've got yourself a three-course meal for $30. I kept it simple and went with the classics - a Caesar salad to start, spaghetti and meatballs, and a profiterole for dessert. The Caesar was sizeable and serviceable, with no departures from the formula, but no standout twists or quality ingredients here either. Romaine, real pancetta, and crumbled parmesan, which sadly wasn't the real deal Parmigiano Regiano. It was big enough for both my wife and I, which was an unexpected bonus though. Next up was the spaghetti and meatballs, a comfort food classic beloved by both young and old. The al dente spaghetti was evenly coated in the pomodoro sauce, and the two meatballs were saucy, tender and hearty. A solid coating of Parmesan and a sprinkle of parsley completed the picture. The star of the show was a bit of a tease, because there was just one (I get it, food costs, etc), but the profiterole was excellent. The choux pastry was lightly crisp on the outside, with a wonderfully rich vanilla cream inside, and a dusting of confectioners sugar and a caramel drizzle took things up a couple notches. And by "things" I mean "my blood sugar". My next time there found me swinging by for a solo lunch, with their casual fare in my sights. Their lunch deal (slice of pizza + soup or salad + a cookie) was an unreal deal for a place that isn't one of Halifax's dicey pizza points, so I jumped on that. Feeling hungry, and wanting to support them beyond the basic deal, I also tacked on a single arancini and a can of San Pellegrino. For my slice I chose the salsciccia which comes with Italian sausage (are the wires connecting on "salsciccia"?), salami, caramelized onions, and mozza, with a drizzle of honey to top it off. It was a hefty slice, with a thick, airy crust that reminded me of focaccia. The sweet honey paired well with the savoury and salty meats, as well as the lightly sweet and acidic tomato sauce. A solid slice, for sure! The garden salad was a mix of fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and carrot, with an herbaceous vinaigrette to brighten up your palette. I enjoyed the crunch of the sizeable chunks of carrot, in contrast to the more common shredded carrot. The arancini disappeared quickly, as the crispy shell and cheesy rice within begged to be finished in as few bites as possible. A tip of the cap to Sapori for giving my lonely arancini a nice plating with a dollop of tomato sauce to hold it to the plate, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley and parm to top it off. Mid-day, mid-week staffing was minimal, and owner Luca Ferrante took mine and other customers' orders with friendly aplomb. Halifax's fine dining scene has long been dominated by Italian restaurants, but more casual fair like Sapori deserves its own place in the city and our bellies.

Staff were very friendly, but service was somewhat slow and they weren't very busy. The Long Version: We had planned to go to Le Bistro by Liz on our last trip to Halifax, but we couldn't because the restaurant was unexpectedly closed due to some emergency or it was closed for a private function, I forget, but I made a note to try again the next time we were in town. So on our most recent visit we made specific plans to go and I'm so glad we finally made it there. This place is very popular! We almost didn't get a table. We didn't make reservations because while on vacation, I like to do things on my own time and don't like committing to being at a certain place at a certain time. We arrived at 5:15pm thinking it wouldn't be busy because it was early to eat, but many tables were full. We were advised we could have a table but would need to leave by 6:30pm because they had a reservation then. Hey if they can serve us that quickly, we were down for a quick meal. I got the Seafood Florentine Crepe ($22.95) and my husband got the Seafood Risotto ($29.95). He also got a glass of Malbec ($17) and we shared the large Profiteroles ($10.95) for dessert. My Seafood Crepe had 2 large Digby scallops, 2 large shrimp and several pieces of salmon, all in a bechamel sauce with onions and spinach. It came with a mixed greens salad which was rather tiny. It was lettuce, one small wedge of tomato and a single slice of carrot. I asked for the dressing on the side and it came as requested. The crepe was delicious and I loved all the seafood in it. The sauce was very rich and creamy. The portion sizes are European (i.e. small, lol) but I felt this was a case of quality over quantity. Although I felt an extra handful of salad would have gone a long way. The salad looked more like a garnish to me than a true side dish. My husband's Seafood Risotto had 3 large Digby scallops and 2 large shrimp on top and small pieces of lobster mixed into the risotto. He really enjoyed his dish. It too was rich and creamy. We shared the large order of Profiteroles (2 profiteroles) and I was pleasantly surprised to see they plated it on 2 separate plates, so we had 1 profiterole each and each was covered in sliced almonds and chocolate sauce and caramel sauce. These were good but not as great as I imagined. The choux pastry didn't have that distinctive chew to it and perhaps was weighed down by too much sauce. Nonetheless, we enjoyed them. Service was courteous and attentive. Even though we were given a bottle of water for the table, our server topped off our waters when she saw they were running low. And we got our meals very quickly. We were out a few minutes before our 6:30pm deadline, lol. Decor is very cute with all things France, like Eiffel tower decorations, signage in French and things like that. Their menu lists prices in Canadian dollars and also in Euros. Not sure what exchange rate they use though, lol. So happy we got to try Le Bistro by Liz. (184)
