**Happy Hour review** We walked in at 4pm on a Saturday in October as we noticed the Happy Hour special: $6 beer and wine, buck-a-shuck. The beers on special are whichever ones are on tap; wine on special is whichever the first wine in each category of wine (white, rosé, red, etc) in 6 oz. What they didn't mentioned is that the buck-a-shuck requires patrons to buy a food item and it is limited to 8 oysters per food item. We ordered a beef tartare and a dozen oysters (that's when she gave us the spiel on that we can only get 8, but will give us an exception of 12). The wine and oysters came within reasonable time. The Pristine Bay oysters are fresh and served with their house-made hot sauce and vinaigrette. The beef tartare ($15) came about 10 mins after the oysters arrived. The tartare is missing flavour - it is single dimensionally beef taste only. Overall: 3.5/5 stars. Disappointed on the Happy Hour omission - almost like a dishonesty. Why don't they say it outright that you have to purchase it with food, but no, you have to bait the patrons and then tell them. Tartare was another disappointment. Not going to recommend.

Way up there in chef skills in HRM, wow. Everything was cooked perfectly. Dishes were "spaghetti mushroom" = tonnarelli di funghi with snap peas (burst in your mouth and sweet, peas ...equally delcious, mushrooms were encrusted with all of the good things of the world. Spectacular. One of the best dishes I've had in HRM in a very long time. I"m sure the fresh, local produce played a part the came through in the flavours. Partner had lamb chops and mushroom risotto, he made the OMG face and stopped chewing at first bite, closed the eyes...I concurred. Med rare perfection. Service was excellent, it seems like a friendly (but not too friendly, just right) well oiled efficient team. Was an absolute pleasure of a time and doubled as a romantic cozy getaway on a chilly night for us. Definitely a new favorite date night gem. Can't wait to see what's next!

I recently came by this new west end resto to catch up with friends. This block, with Studio East, Tony's, Robie St. Station and the even newer El Chino Snack Bar, is a formidable food option for people in the neighbourhood and from around the city. We arrived for a late-ish dinner as I had been working the day shift, so the crowd was pretty thin by then, with just under half the tables occupied. A long bar runs much of the length of the narrow restaurant, with nice shelving made out of wooden boxes - some open and others with upward swinging doors. We were sat at one of the tables along the window, with a very chill, low-backed banquette running the length of the window. Unfortunately they either underestimated their cooling needs or their AC was out of commission, as it was very, very hot and humid inside. All the doors and window were open, and a couple fans were set up, but it was still uncomfortably warm. Their drink list is pretty extensive, with plenty of wines to choose from, as well as local beer and cider on tap, and several house cocktail recipes. With the heat, I went for the tangy, cleverly-named Goseface Killah, from the nearby Good Robot brewery. The menu is pretty compact, with a handful of appetizers and a selection of familiar proteins for entrees - lamb, beef, pork, chicken, duck, and a vegetarian pasta (though you can add meat to it). My wife and I got the "E&V toss" salad to share as our appetizer, while for my main the pork tenderloin drew me in with its double smoked bacon sauerkraut, and pomme gaufrettes (fancy waffle fries/chips). I was glad that we split the salad, as it was larger than apps often are in nice restaurants. With plenty of fresh micro greens, pine nuts, toasted apple and cubes of fried haloumi, it was a light and tasty start to the meal. The pork was a bit underwhelming visually, with everything being on the yellow/brownish side of the spectrum, but taste always wins, as it did in this case. I'm not normally a sauerkraut guy; I never put it on sausages when I get those at carts, and I've never bought any for at-home use. But E&V's struck a great balance between tangy, savoury and a hint of sweetness, and the generous mounds of it made for a nice topping on the ultra-crispy gaufrettes. The pork was very moist and had a lovely char from the grill, and paired well with everything on the plate, including the creamy dill sauce that added a bit of herbiness to the dish. For dessert we got the tiramisu cheesecake, which combined two things my wife loves. The slice was large without being a terrifying heart-stopper if one person were to have it, and it came in a surprisingly large pool of chocolate. Not your usual Jackson Pollack-esque drizzle, the whole bottom of the side plate was liquid chocolate. Probably not great for margins, but damn tasty. The cheesecake was very light and smooth, and the coffee flavour was a nice way to finish a delicious meal, without the caffeine. While Eliot and Vine isn't trailblazing any menus on their way to culinary fame, but they're making very good food in a part of town that didn't have that option. Now if they can just keep things cool in there, we'll all be better off.

    Charcuterie board

Fantastic experience here! Came for their happy hour and enjoyed $1 oysters with our order of a charcuterie board. Limited selection of wine and beer was available for $6 for happy hour. The food was delicious and the server was very attentive, we asked for extra crackers for the charcuterie board and she provided them promptly! Would definitely recommend to friends and family!

I have come to this establishment on several occasions, usually for drinks. Cocktails are superb, nice wine menu, and the Moscow mule is Service is great, friendly and knowledgeable. Two thumbs up to Jesse, he is fantastic! Love the atmosphere, and open windows in the summer. Decided to go for dinner with some people who were visiting from out of town. We ordered: the hen, pork chop and fish. Food quality is solid, clean plated nicely. Only issue I have here is there is barely any food on your plate. Pork chop was bland and nothing spectacular, there was 1 Brussel sprout cut in half, half of a carrot and half of what I think was a root veg of some sort. The hen was gone in 3 bites. So we ordered dessert, too pretty to eat. Crafted beautifully but again, it was a shell of chocolate and some cream inside. Walked away broke and starving. I love this place but sadly won't be back for dinner. For the prices being charged, please put some food on the plate.

Not yet is known about the upstairs-from-the-Henry-House bar yet other than it's wonderful decor and fancy drink menu. This isn't a beer-drinking spot, folks. This is where you go to feel important, share some drinks with a few friends and enjoy a couple hours of elegancy without feeling out of place. The Drawing Room has a timeless feel to it. You could be having a flashback to any period over the last hundred years and know that no matter what year you're in, you're enjoying it like royalty. The drink menu offers martinis, wines, and drinks of all sorts. I ordered a Burie'd Mojito, which was white rum, an assortment of berry juices and mint leaves. It was fantastic! My second drink was a vodka-based green lime drink that was just as delicious. Mind you, the drinks are $10+ so unless your wallet is loaded, don't come here to join it. Of course, the Drawing Room isn't the type of environment to get drunk but the drinks are made strong so be wary of your perception because you may be surprised once you stand up.

Very cozy, intimate environment with an energetic crowd the night I went. Mostly bar seating although there are about 4-5 tables - the most you could probably seat are four people. Had a couple of cocktails - amazing. Food was mostly seafood and extremely fresh, prepared well and innovative - see pictures. Price was reasonable for food of this quality. Will definitely return. Tip - you should probably make reservations. There's a patio in the Summer as well

I'd been living in Dartmouth for a couple months before I finally made my first visit (cut me some…read moreslack, unpacking takes time!), with my wife and I stopping by after work on a Friday. I'd call it happy hour, but Dear Friend is too popular and upscale to bother offering a happy hour, so let's go with the Quebecois term, cinq à sept. I began my weekend wind-down with one of their house creations, All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down). It seemed fitting giving my age demographic, and it was one of the few specialty cocktails with whisk(e)y in it. With an ingredient list even longer than its irreverent title, it combines Jim Beam rye, Hennessey VS cognac, beef tallow (!!), cedar and bayberry leaf. After an impressive rundown from the bartender on the work that went into creating this drink, I thoroughly appreciated it's warmth and depth of flavour on a cool fall evening. The beef tallow made for a velvety smooth mouthfeel, without having globs of fat floating in the drink, and the cedar and bayberry added herbal undertones that contributed without overpowering. For some solid sustenance, we stuck to the bar bites section of the menu, although they do have bigger apps and full-size entrees. Marinated olives were an easy choice, while the falafels beckoned with their deep-fried crispness. To round out our trio, we had to go with the house Party Mix. The Party Mix came out first, and deviates from the classic chip mix by combining sweet and savoury, with caramel popcorn, spiced cashews and mini chocolate truffles. It was endlessly snackable, and great for having a drink at the bar over great conversation with your significant other. I'm not one for the standard black or green olives that come out of ungodly large food service containers, but I've been slowly warming up to higher tier olives, and Dear Friend's very generous bowl was a great bar snack, bordering on small meal. The dish that disappeared the quickest was the falafels. This was partially because they were so damn good and there waere four pieces, as opposed to the other two dishes. They came in finger-form, as opposed to the small pucks/balls that are more commonly seen, and the extra surface area allowed for an even crispier bite, while a delicious cashew tahini cream that lent to the familiar falafel flavour, but with a certain je ne sais quoi. That's right, French twice in one review - I'm fancy AF! Small bits of pickled cauliflower and a delicate layer of microgreens brought brighter flavours to play off the richer note of the falafel and tahini. It's now a local cliché to talk about how much downtown Dartmouth has changed over the past decade or so, and Dear Friend has been one of the standard bearers of that continued change these past few years with their thoughtfully crafted beverages and shareable bites.

Even though we knew about where it was, we walked right past the beautiful two-story historic house initially. We knew by taking a look at the website they do not accept reservations, which was fine with us. We were, however, going on a Friday night. On walking into the main entry, that space was packed wall-to-wall. Within a few short minutes, one of the staff greeted us. They don't exactly have a formal wait list here, from what I could tell. The staff member offered us the drinks menu and asked if we'd like to order something while we waited on a table. We ordered up a couple of pints, then looked around for some open space to stand. They have two standing bar rails, one in the main area near the bar itself and another one in the middle dining area. This place has about the most creative layout of booths and tables I've ever seen. They do have an outdoor patio out back, but we didn't take a look at that. They have quite a few very comfy two-person booths around the interior. It appeared the way the wait list worked was that they either have a phenomenal memory, or they actually use the bar tab you open to work like a wait list. It seems to really be more about how many you have in your party, and the exact size of any tables/booths that open up. We might have waited about 30 minutes or so for our table for two up in the front of the main dining room. Every single person on the wait staff here is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. The beer list is great, loaded up with so many good local and Nova Scotia craft beer options. The food menu is what really makes this place special, though. We were on vacation, so we may have a tendency for our eyes to be bigger than our stomachs can handle. There was just so many amazing looking dishes. We started out with a pickle jar, fried taters, and the tomatoes appetizers. I have to say, and my wife agrees, the tomatoes dish was the best of everything we had. Its made up of sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, shallots, capers, and garlic chips. All that is sitting on top of creme fraiche. By the time you're finishing the dish, you start thinking about a straw to finish up that creme fraiche. Good grief, that was so good. Don't pass on the fried taters, though. Those seemed to be mashed potatoes formed into rectangular big fries, cooked almost like panko and served with horseradish sour cream. After all that, we could only muster splitting the deli style chop salad with cold water shrimp on it. Our great waitress talked us into an order of the brown bread, a very soft kind of Irish soda bread I believe. That bread just melts in your mouth. If you decide to venture out to The Narrows, you're in for a total experience. You'll feel like you stepped back in time to a real British pub... the house must be from somewhere around the mid 1800s. Every room is warm and cozy, with beautiful woodwork and curious antiques in all sorts of nooks and crannies. You may have quite a long wait depending on the size of your party and how busy the place is, but trust me... its worth every minute.
