We had such a wonderful experience at Henry's House! The food was absolutely delicious. We tried the fish cakes and the fish and chips, while our children enjoyed the grilled cheese. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients. The fish was fresh, flavorful, and you could actually see generous pieces of real fish in every bite. And the fries deserve a special mention: perfectly crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and absolutely delicious! As Belgians, we're very picky about our fries, so that's about the highest compliment we can give. The desserts were incredible, worth saving room for! My favorite was the beer chocolate cake, which was simply outstanding. The service was just as memorable. Our server was genuinely friendly, attentive, and always made sure we were enjoying our meal. To top it all off, the owner was warm, welcoming, and delighted to share the fascinating history of this beautiful historic building. Stopped in Halifax while on a cruise and met a local friend ... who suggested lunch here. Quick and easy 2-3 block walk from cruise pier. Quaint little 2 story pub with both indoor and outdoor seating and great service from super friendly waitstaff. Good selection of beers in 5, 13, or 18 ounces including (awesome) Propeller Galaxy IPA and also some cask conditioned ales. Had the (tasty) Seafood Chowder which comes with yummy soda bread, and (very nice/fresh) Beetroot Salad ... but the (small) Lobster Roll was underwhelming with what seemed like shredded lobster salad and no chunks of lobster at all. Still, a pretty good lunch with not much to complain about ... except maybe the white wine at a steep $15/glass. read more

The place was great. It has a 3 tier deck next to a house that was converted into a restaurant. I say I'm the lowest deck facing the street (People watching Paris style) and ordered a poutine. Being from Montreal... I KNOW POUTINE and this was the real deal. The homemade fries from cut potatoes, the cheese curds and the gravy. It was a 10 out of 10. So good I got greedy and ordered 2 of them, which I stuffed my face with and washed it all down with a nice and cold oatmeal stout. The waitress was super nice and the service was great. I recommend it to anyone visiting or living in the downtown Halifax area!! read more

I swear I'm not just writing this cuz I'm scared my friend who picked up the bill MIGHT be a bad tipper (but that's why I did NOT forget weeks after my visit to post.) This place is the best! We sat downstairs at the bar and the vibe is so cozy I wanna go back and write a book there. They have an interesting selection of cask beers on tap, and my absolute FAVE fish & chips EVER! What a perfect spot for a rainy Sunday afternoon. We ate in the pub surrounded by history. My husband had the bangers and mash with a very enjoyable verdict and I had the delicious French onion soup. We realized on a Sunday night that we didn't have much time to find a place for dinner as we got lazy and hunkered into a movie in the late afternoon. We found a Steak house open online so in a cab we went. Paid our cab driver and ran acrooss the street only to greet one of the managers walking out and told us they closed early. Now our cabs gone wind is blowing and we walked around for another ten minutes and realized that it was a slow night in the city cause of snow and most places closed early. We ended up walking almost the length of Downtown Halifax back until we saw The Henry Pub was still open!! **This pub is right across the street from our hotel, How Stupid is that eh !! It ended up being the perfect place to get some Awesome comfort food and drinks! Funny how things work out sometimes :o) To start my wife ordered a hot apple cider it was the real deal! When it shows up at your table and you see that thick pasty look in the glass you know it's made from real apples not just some mix. Man it was fantastic, she loved it & had two, She usually only has one drink. I had a few Vanilla Stouts, local craft, excellent!! The menu is real old school British pub food with 1/2 a page of fresh made in house meat pies, my wife ordered the steak and mushroom pie and I got the Shepard Pie. Both were Fantastic!! ( I got to have half of my wife's pie as they were very filling & too much for her but I'm not complaining. ) lol The crust was perfect and that either makes or breaks it. The food & drinks were great but the staff are Awesome here, they make you feel so comfortable and welcome we had to came back again the next night for dessert (cause we had too much food already our first visit) to try their recommendations and the desserts again on night 2 were fresh and fantastic ! This review is starting to look like an essay but I really can't say enough about our experiences here, It's probably one of the best places we got to enjoy on our eastern Canada adventure! read more

This place was pretty busy when we went there for dinner on a weekday, which is generally a good sign. We were seated downstairs, which has a wonderful English pub atmosphere. Service was a little on the slow side, food is little on the expensive side, and the beer list is a little on the short side. Still, my partner and I enjoyed splitting a Cornish pasty and a steak and kidney pie, which was absolutely loaded with meat. Best of all, we were able to get small orders of the restaurant's deluxe salads as sides, which the server offered up without even being prompted -- a good thing, as I'd been trying to decide between my meat pie and the beetroot salad (which was excellent). Recommended, especially if you're staying at the Halliburton or another hotel on the south end of Downtown Halifax. read more

The Henry House has always been one of my favourite higher end pubs in the city. You don't come here for cheap drinks or women with short skirts (although the latter is never frowned upon). The HH is all about good food and drinks in a respectable pub atmosphere where you're not trying to avoid stepping on glass or mystery spills. Over the years, I've become a big fan of their Halifamous Ultimate Burger, so on my visit last week I wanted to get something more traditional from their menu and continued the fish cakes kick that I've been on this fall. Our orders are promptly taken by an Aussie waiter that my co-workers may have liked more than the food, if they hadn't raved so much about the fries, but I digress. When our meals arrived I was greet my two sizable salt cod fish cakes. Golden brown and crisp on the outside, the cakes still gave way to my fork and knife without squishing, which always bothers me when this happens to a fish cake. The salt cod is, naturally, fairly salty but not in an unpleasant way, and the tasty fish is mixed thoroughly throughout the fluffy potato filling. The green tomato chow that is advertised on the menu wasn't available, and I found that the tomatillo salsa that came instead of the chow was too overpowering for the fish. Fortunately, there was a bottle of Heinz to save the day. Maybe it's unrefined, but I'm a sucker for ketchup and fish cakes. Accompanying my fish cakes was an bowl of baked beans and brown bread. While the bread didn't seem particularly brown, it was fine, if unremarkable and served as a delivery vessel for the beans. The beans themselves had a delicious sweet onion flavour from what I would assume were caramelized onions as well as a rich earthiness from the sauce, although the beans were a tad too firm. It was a solid lunch, and with rave reviews around the table for the food and service, and without a doubt I'll be back at the HH for food cider and general good times. read more

This a great place if you are visiting Halifax want to hang out in a pub-style atmosphere without having to walk to far from your accommodation. The Henry House was just half a block across the street from my hostel and a hostel-mate and I went to check out on his last night at the hostel. The experience was worthwhile. This beautiful historic home had been turned into a very well-fashioned restaurant on the main and second floor with tavern-style pub in the basement. Wanting to have a good pub experience we ventured underground for some beer and pub-grub. The pub area was pretty cozy and very coastal-style with a nice fireplace in one area, even though there was no fire going when we were there. There are some British comfort favorites on the menus like Fishcakes, Bangers and Mash, Sheppard's Pie, Cornish Pastie, Fish & Chips and Steak Pies. But I was pretty famished by the time we sat down and decided that a good old burger would fill me up pretty good so I went for the Ultimate Burger with Fries. It did what was expected off it, tasted great, soothing and filling. I had some chipotle mayo (I think that's what it was) to go with the fries, and it was SO GOOD! This is definitely my first choice pub to go to. I recommend taking a good look at it from the outside during the day and dining inside it at night ;-) read more

We've come here about 5-6 separate times while on vacation in Halifax. Every single time, we leave completely satisfied with the drinks, food, and service. Usually the more often you visit a restaurant, the more likely you are to have a negative experience, but that doesn't seem to be the case with The Henry House. The main pub area is downstairs in the basement. There's two ways of getting in, the main door (which will lead you first into a separate dining space which I believe is a different restaurant) and a side door which will lead you directly to a stairwell to the basement. I only point this out because we missed the side door on our first couple visits. Over the course of several days, we have sampled multiple dishes from their burger menu and the traditional pub fare. Every item they served us was phenomenal (their burgers are especially tasty). If you're ever in Halifax, I would highly recommend making a stop here with some good company for a relaxing night! read more

This cozy, historic stone house turned restaurant was the perfect place for my welcoming meal to Halifax. Considering we were a party of 7, it was understandable we wouldn't get a table on the patio on such a nice night so we were seated in the main dining area. After a full day of travelling, I was famished! Glancing at the menu, I knew what I wanted. The lamb shank! How could I not? Ale braised and served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies sounded amazing. And it was! The lamb was fall off the bone tender and the stout demi glaze complimented the root veggies and mashed potatoes so well. The other dishes at our table did not disappoint either - lobster dip & chips, goat cheese & bacon stuffed chicken, steak & mushroom pie, etc. I don't think you could go wrong with whatever you decide to have here! The HH has had many lives and owners. It is a heritage property once occupied by William Henry , Father of Confederation. When I came to town (1977), the HH was a fine dining establishment; downstairs was The Little Stone Jug, a pub. In the 80s, Gingers Tavern operated on Hollis Street and made home brew--they relocated to the HH address under the name The Granite Brewery. The GB then moved gown the street, but continued to retail beer from the HH location, which reverted back to The Henry House. Then ownership changed, but the name (and beer) remained. For my money, they serve the best "English" beer in town, fashioned after those made at the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire. My fav is Best Bitter Special, which we old timers sometimes call Dry Hop. But the food is great as well, pub food, but a class above. It's all good. This was our de facto HQ during International Year of Astronomy 2009. They got yo know us so well, they would start pouring our pints as we came through the door. The service is always top-notch. When it's chilly, they light gas fires. For summer, they have a small, shady deck. It can get noisy when packed, but not deafening. No loud music. Street parking is recommended. It is my go-to place in Hali. I bring visitors to it. read more

Look no further. I'd say anything you order here will please you. I've never been disappointed. Love the feel of their basement. Really feels like you're going back in time. I walk by The Henry House more often than I've been inside, but when I had to pick a place to eat after work it was a no brainer! I don't think anyone would say no to The Henry House. We were seated upstairs, which was great, sometimes I'm just not in the mood to eat in a low-lit room. The dining room isn't very big, but it doesn't feel stuffy or over crowded either, even when it is busy, and the service was fantastic! It blew my mind really. I wish I remembered our servers name because he was great! Super professional, speedy and attentive! It was like we were in a formal dining room! I ordered the chicken club wrap with their hand cut fries. The wrap was average, I really like lots of flavor - which it didn't have, but it was still filling. The fries on the other hand were delicious! They have a pretty good menu with lots of different options! Not to mention the character and charm that everyone loves so much! Nice selection of local craft beers on tap (including some I had not come across yet), as well as a tasty cider on tap. Had an early Sunday night dinner there. The pan-fried haddock was ok but bland, so were the plain rice and steamed carrots it was served with. The reason I am just giving one star was the horrible service. I was the only guest in the dining room, and was rushed to order, rushed to eat, the bill showed up before I had finished my drink. I had contemplated having another drink but I guess I was not wanted as a customer. I really felt like they wanted to kick me out as quickly as possible - very unwelcoming! read more

I really should live in the South End, because some of my favourite places are within a few square blocks. The Henry House is on my list of top pubs in the city. It has a great patio in the Summer, not the best view in the city but a great space to sit and enjoy a pint and bite to eat. Ever better is the basement in the winter. Sitting near the warm fire on a cold night and enjoying a private conversation with the music just loud enough to provide a great atmosphere. The food is good and reasonably priced, British Pub stye eats with a decent burger on the menu. I have had some wonderful moments in this pub and recommend a visit. read more

There are two parts to the Henry House. The upstairs is sort of like a regular dining area. Their foods are a bit more fancy. And then you have the downstairs which is authentically Pub-style in look and food. The pricing for the food is very fair and you get exactly what you pay for. I have been there on their brunches as well. Not my favorite in the city but they have a few unique items and the pricing is very competitive. The staff are nice except there was a time I went in with a Vegetarian friend of mine. I wouldn't say they made fun of her directly when she asked if they had anything for Vegetarians but they made some offhanded joking remarks that made her and myself never want to come back. So the staff really need to understand that one must be sensitive to the customers and their preferences in a situation like this. And unfortunately that incident is why I'm giving them a three star rating and not a four star that I would like to give it. But if you are not a Vegetarian and love the Pub scene, this is definitely a place to go. read more

Look at how cozy it is here (I'll attach an image from today's visit). For a relaxing time with great food and drink and friendly staff - come here. There's a small parking lot in the back, but usually ample parking on the street and it's accessible by bus. Bonus: You can also go downstairs or up for a quick change of atmosphere (the upstairs is The Drawing Room which is a different business so check their site to see if it's open). Prices are fair and we finished all our food today - no leftovers but no room for dessert either (they were tempting and yes, I've had a few of their desserts before - yummy!). If we weren't going to another event in a few hours I would've split a dessert with someone. We ordered: fish cakes with pear & goat cheese salad, kidney pie with fries and cinnamon French toast with bacon. And we were all satisfied. I checked out neighbouring tables to see what they had: various eggs benny, poutine, fish and chips and they all looked delicious. So... I don't come here often enough - it's been a year since I last visited. I will add this to my list of favourite spots and a good spot for groups and family meals, as well. Another bonus: Several shops nearby including The Board Room Game Cafe next door and the Seaport Farmers Market is within walking distance (check if it's open and stop there to browse, sample or buy). read more

Henry house, I love your nachos! They are my go-to nachos. The only thing I would change is the consistency of the salsa. It is made in-house and easily the best salsa I have ever had, but it is too thick. A lil blendy-blendy would make it perfect! I wish I could give an extra star for adding pineapple. The only down side is, they are not always consistent with layering the cheese. Also my favourite dark n stormy. read more

The Henry House is beautiful on the outside and the inside is great to explore - 3 different levels of restaurants. The lower pub is a great experience and feels like a slice of Britain. At first I thought the tiny little booth was going to be a hardship but you feel like you are in a secret cubby hole - it's like pre-school for adults. At least it made your conversation pretty private. It's never good to hear the conversation next to you. The pub attracts all types of customers - I went on a Thursday once and it was an older crowd and on one Friday it was packed with people in their 20s and 30s. We had a new server during one experience and he was quite good and attentive. I tried the burger which was a little strange from the spices in it and it was not my cup of tea. The next time I tried the fish and chips which was bang on. The batter was fluffy and the fish was flaky. When you walk into Henry House you know you're in for some good food. The smell alone is enough to make even the fullest person hungry. I always get excited walking into this place because I know my meal is going to be delicious. And it is. The food here is prepared quite fast, but it always hits the spot. I haven't found a favourite item yet, but that's because I want to try everything. I like that they have created different things from the typical pub food. And I especially enjoy all the specialty beers they have. I actually prefer to eat in the restaurant section, as opposed to the lower pub section. As soon as you walk downstairs the smell turns from tasty food to stale beer. It's too much like a basement down here in that the ceilings are low and it's kind of dark. I feel too cramped and claustrophobic down there. I do like the building itself though. It's an old stone house, which makes the dining experience interesting and authentic. The meals are reasonably priced, so it's not specific to special occasions. I certainly enjoy going here on a regular basis. read more

Very saddened to say I had a horrible experience tonight with my family. Tonight is our first night in Halifax and your menu looked amazing. Unfortunately my aunts plate came out and had hair in it. We both work in the industry and realize these things happen. But the way the restaurant team handled the incident is cause for concern. Not even 5 mins later my uncle finds hair in his dish. A worker then comes over and says it's an airborne hair that was basically our fault. You never blame a guest no matter what. Did we go into the kitchen and add hair to our dishes? We were treated with much disrespect and it felt very uncomfortable and unwelcoming. There's no breeze in here and my hair didn't fly 3ft down the table and land in a baked Pastie or underneath pan fried fish. Thank you. read more
