Fish & Chips SO CRISPY AND HOT! Still thinking about it...
    Christina W.

I swear I'm not just writing this cuz I'm scared my friend who picked up the bill MIGHT be a bad tipper (but that's why I did NOT forget weeks after my visit to post.) This place is the best! We sat downstairs at the bar and the vibe is so cozy I wanna go back and write a book there. They have an interesting selection of cask beers on tap, and my absolute FAVE fish & chips EVER! I'll say it. It's the only picture I have from the place and I drool just looking at it. Also, it's super close to the cruise ship port, if you want one more bev before all-aboard. I'll def be back! Also, our bartender was awesome. I feel bad I forget his name! I might owe you five bucks lol.

The place was great. It has a 3 tier deck next to a house that was converted into a restaurant. I say I'm the lowest deck facing the street (People watching Paris style) and ordered a poutine. Being from Montreal... I KNOW POUTINE and this was the real deal. The homemade fries from cut potatoes, the cheese curds and the gravy. It was a 10 out of 10. So good I got greedy and ordered 2 of them, which I stuffed my face with and washed it all down with a nice and cold oatmeal stout. The waitress was super nice and the service was great. I recommend it to anyone visiting or living in the downtown Halifax area!!

The warm gingerbread with caramel sauce

What a perfect spot for a rainy Sunday afternoon. We ate in the pub surrounded by history. My husband had the bangers and mash with a very enjoyable verdict and I had the delicious French onion soup. But the best part of the meal was the best gingerbread we ever had - made even better accompanied by a glass of Merlot. Highly recommend.

We realized on a Sunday night that we didn't have much time to find a place for dinner as we got lazy and hunkered into a movie in the late afternoon. We found a Steak house open online so in a cab we went. Paid our cab driver and ran acrooss the street only to greet one of the managers walking out and told us they closed early. Now our cabs gone wind is blowing and we walked around for another ten minutes and realized that it was a slow night in the city cause of snow and most places closed early. We ended up walking almost the length of Downtown Halifax back until we saw The Henry Pub was still open!! **This pub is right across the street from our hotel, How Stupid is that eh !! It ended up being the perfect place to get some Awesome comfort food and drinks! Funny how things work out sometimes :o) To start my wife ordered a hot apple cider it was the real deal! When it shows up at your table and you see that thick pasty look in the glass you know it's made from real apples not just some mix. Man it was fantastic, she loved it & had two, She usually only has one drink. I had a few Vanilla Stouts, local craft, excellent!! The menu is real old school British pub food with 1/2 a page of fresh made in house meat pies, my wife ordered the steak and mushroom pie and I got the Shepard Pie. Both were Fantastic!! ( I got to have half of my wife's pie as they were very filling & too much for her but I'm not complaining. ) lol The crust was perfect and that either makes or breaks it. The food & drinks were great but the staff are Awesome here, they make you feel so comfortable and welcome we had to came back again the next night for dessert (cause we had too much food already our first visit) to try their recommendations and the desserts again on night 2 were fresh and fantastic ! This review is starting to look like an essay but I really can't say enough about our experiences here, It's probably one of the best places we got to enjoy on our eastern Canada adventure!

    Old school fun

Great food, not pretentious, and friendly service. Easy vibe and felt totally comfortable eating on my own.

    best seafood chowder ever!

I found the world's best seafood chowder at Henrys house! seriously fresh seafood! we also had salad and beef/mushroom pie. equally good!

    Salt cod fish cakes

Beautiful historical building with great food and service! We ordered the poutine to share and the salt cod fish cakes. The poutine serving was a bit small for sharing but the prices were very good!

This a great place if you are visiting Halifax want to hang out in a pub-style atmosphere without having to walk to far from your accommodation. The Henry House was just half a block across the street from my hostel and a hostel-mate and I went to check out on his last night at the hostel. The experience was worthwhile. This beautiful historic home had been turned into a very well-fashioned restaurant on the main and second floor with tavern-style pub in the basement. Wanting to have a good pub experience we ventured underground for some beer and pub-grub. The pub area was pretty cozy and very coastal-style with a nice fireplace in one area, even though there was no fire going when we were there. There are some British comfort favorites on the menus like Fishcakes, Bangers and Mash, Sheppard's Pie, Cornish Pastie, Fish & Chips and Steak Pies. But I was pretty famished by the time we sat down and decided that a good old burger would fill me up pretty good so I went for the Ultimate Burger with Fries. It did what was expected off it, tasted great, soothing and filling. I had some chipotle mayo (I think that's what it was) to go with the fries, and it was SO GOOD! This is definitely my first choice pub to go to. I recommend taking a good look at it from the outside during the day and dining inside it at night ;-)

While the roll itself was small, the lobster salad mix was fresh and tasty. While I generally prefer fresh lobster off the shell with melted butter for my lobster rolls, the one I got from the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse was not bad at all. The Caesar salad, on the other hand, was absolutely phenomenal. I love how every piece of lettuce was well covered in the dressing, served with some of the tastiest croutons I've had. I did not expect that at all. The server was friendly. I also really enjoyed the live music.

Pool tables are a nice addition... I wasn't really sure what the $2 cover was going towards besides upkeep? A grungy/funky spot in the North End that's for sure!

Charlie's is where you go when you want to go to Cheers. (Not the Cheers on Grafton St., the Cheers on TV according to your 6 y/o mind, which is really just the the theme song, fuzzy visuals, and conflating real life people with Cliff and/or Rhea Pearlman.) In short, it's where you go when you come home nostalgic and want to see all your old friends, enthusiastically buy each other drinks like it's a genuine gift, dance to one of those weird new electric blue jukeboxes, shout and pontificate around a pool table, and generally have a back slappin, squeezey hugging, chortling little time. The decor is like any affordable house, only the door has a key code and a woman sits at a table with a guest book when you come in. This does not make you feel cool, but it does make you feel like life is funny. The bartender is so used to over-friendly drunk patrons that nothing can melt him. I imagine that deep in his core is something more kind than anything I have ever known, but it is too precious to be shared. The last time I came here, someone apologized for asking me to dance when I turned him down. Apologized. For my rejecting him. A dark little mineshaft to the salt of the earth this place is, lemme tell ya.

He said he thought someone had already taken our order. All was good! My white hot restaurant rage slowly drained from my face. I was happy again. The reason it was just Okay was the super loud bros in the back, screaming about their weekend. I mean they were screaming. I felt like these guys might be regulars the way they were so comfortable here. I mean, I don't even scream in my own house. I'm never that comfortable. A lot of other tables were glaring over at them as well. Hello? Do you live here? Are you that confident that everyone in here wants to hear your conversation? Because I will bet my hard earned money they don't. They couldn't have been drunk, it was only 1pm on Sunday. Maybe they were drunk on VLT gambling. Who knows. All I know is, this place was full of regulars, at the bar, at tables, in the VLT room and I was uncomfortable. The Jenny burger was definitely worth all the uncomfortableness though. I added fries and coleslaw for only $3.50! This has to be one of the best pub burgers in the city. Although I'm raving about it, I honestly will probably never go back due to the high likelihood of screaming. I can't comfortably do anything while people are yelling around me. Sorry Jenny's Place. (this is the old Lion & Bright location). Standard but nice atmosphere with green walls, large wooden bar, a few booths in the front, sectioned off tables in the back if you want a bit cozier and darker feel. Friendly staff. Good selection of beers. For food, I tried their 'Requisite Nova Scotia Pub Nachos' - 'freshly fried corn tortilla chips, herbs, salsas, good cheese, veggies' their words - $19. They are definitely pretty and colorful topped with shaved radish, cilantro, some kind of hot saucey drizzle, splash of sour cream, few chunks of perhaps feta? Good portion size where I was full, and appreciate that they are meant to be different than your typical nachos, but didn't blow me away. Nothing wrong with them, just left me craving the more boring standard nachos with tons of stretchy cheese on it, peppers, tomato, etc. My friend had the 'Very British Pie' - roasted chicken potpie $16. It was good, rectangular shaped, burnt a bit on the corners, tad watery inside, simple but satisfying enough. We debated trying dessert but were actually full from the beer and entrees. I'd still go back here anytime and try something else on the menu.
