Nachos and beef barley soup, with beer
Jim C.

Monday lunch time visit after their 1st week being opened. I dropped shortly after 11am, place was more or less empty but it was expected as Dartmouth crossing was pretty dead. Got seated right away and got my Sam Adams lager right away. The menu was standard pub fair and prices were inline with what you would expect. Nachos with guacamole and 3 beer (I was there for a while) came up ~32$ while the beef barley soup came up to just above 12$. Nice presentation with the dishes, the nachos were good but like every other pub, seems overpriced IMO. It's not a large spot, maybe seating for 30, but while it ended up being half full at peak lunch time, the tunes was a little too loud. The seating are either high top table & stools or tables with a couple of booths. The staff were friendly and were able to pay at our table with the debit machine. I'll drop by here again, this might be the right kind of spot if you are here non typical hours, like waiting for someone while they shop.

I'm a sucker for an Irish Pub, even the ones not in Ireland. While we frequent Dartmouth Crossing for many items on a regular basis, we don't typically tend to dine here. But, given the task of selecting a nearby location to our home for our first night with a paid babysitter and we figured we'd look for something in the area. Having heard about this Irish Pub I convinced hubby to go here and I was glad we gave it a try. Walking into the pub feels like most other Irish pubs I've encountered - the bar seems to always be the focal point and this one was no different. Towering nearly to the ceiling was a massive bar. The pub itself has a couple of levels, differentiated by just a few steps. There are lots of tables set up for 2 or 4 people and at least one large corner booth by the window for larger crowds to gather around. While we were there for dinner, I could instantly sense it was a fun spot to drop by for a pint and while it does seem like a very unlikely spot for a pub, I think that also sets it apart from others in that it is more of a destination and those who go there go there because they want to make the effort. We arrived shortly before 6pm on a Thursday evening and we were glad we arrived when we did. By the time we were pouring over our menus while sipping on a Stella draught the tables filled up and people were trying to find places to sit. I'm not sure if this is typical or not but we also noticed that Hal Bruce was playing that evening so perhaps they were there to have a bite to eat then enjoy the entertainment so arrived early to secure a seat. Our server was adequately attentive but didn't ask us if our meal was okay which I found odd but she was in close proximity to us on many occassions serving other guest so I'm sure she assumed we'd flag her down if we needed her. I ordered the Emerald Isle Burger which was a lamb patty and while tasty, it was not the best I've had. It seemed a bit over done and maybe even a bit too crispy around the edges having been cooked on the same grill as other burgers as I honestly could not tell it wasn't actually beef. It reminded me of going to a summer bbq in someone's back yard and an uncle being in charge of the bbq only to render all burgers overdone and a bit charcoal infused. Hubby had the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich which he reported was good, not fantastic but still tasty but the thing he raved about was the fries. While they appear frozen at first glance they were home cut and something about them really resonated with him. Me, not so much. Then again, I'm not a fan of home cut fries. The atmosphere was jovial and relaxed and reminded me a bit of some of the pubs I visited in Newfoundland. The kind of place you could imagine being a regular haunt for a Friday "end of the work week" pint. While it may seem like a duck out of water because of its surroundings, don't count it out if you're in the area shopping. Typical pub fare, a good selection of beers on tap and a casual atmosphere everyone can feel comfortable in.

I'm looking at the Tommy Hilfiger Store on a 45 degree angle- that was the best way I could give directions to my friend I was meeting for a beer. I figured we would try something new since I was at Costco, and I figured it was local. While I waited for my friend and was warmly greeted by a nice Austrailian or possible Kiwi girl. I was poured a very nice pint of guiness and upon my friends arrival he had two pints of Canadian. Not eating, the server invited us back for wing night, which I mistakenly thought she said was Monday night. We returned Monday night under the premise of wings. My friend makes it clear that I was the one who was mistaken. It turned out to be buy one burger platter, get one for 5.99. My third dinner companion, who was late arriving, would be unfortunately purchasing a full price platter given the complicated math problem we were currently in. "I'm across from Costco, is this place by the CIBC?" He too was lost. To be fair I did tell him the name of the place was Seamus Oregans and his googling brought him nothing but car dealerships. The server was really good and helpful. She had worked at Jack Astors for 5 years and she knew what she was doing. The place was full in the upper part with what appeared to be regulars, always a nice sign. I asked who the owner was and she said she was just there with her son, Seamus. Its good to support local, and a family business too. I was recommened the Lamb Burger with Bacon and Guacamole, while my friend got the Guinness Burger with Onion Rings. She explained all the burgers were made in house. I am unclear as to what my other friend ordered as we were finished by the time he made it to the establishment. My burger was presented very nicely, check the pics, but I would have liked the bun toasted. As well, the tomato was a little unripened and the bacon could be improved by using a local smoked product. It really just tasted like buffett bacon. The burger was cooked very nicely and fries and gravy were very nice as well. My friend with the Guinness burger had no complaints, and said his meal was cooked very nicely as well. The onion ring which topped his burger looked homemade as well. This place has been open a year and seems to have a loyal following. I went there twice in three days so there had to be something which drew me back. I would say it was the service. Very kind and prompt servers who know the menu and what type of clientele dines at a place like theirs. Seamus David's could use some marketing as its on the end unit of a low rise strip section of Dartmouth Crossing. Parking is across a street and a 200 ft walk, which is not a problem. Perhaps its people, me being included, not being familiar with business outside of the big box style in this park. Keep it up Seamus, I like your place.

Best food, cold beer and awesome staff. The bar keeps are the best

Erica, Jamie and Jill are the friendliest and most helpful bar keeps ever. Each night I'd ask for a dinner suggestion. Each night it was perfect. Not only beautiful but smart and know the area. Jamie wrote me up a list of things to do and see. Erica shared stories and Jill just makes you smile. If you're in Dartmouth EAT HERE. Hearty potions just good people. I don't give compliments I just state facts.

Red and Gill are the best.

Beautiful bar ladies. Cold beers with a good selection in tap and in bottles and a fully stocked bar Red and Gill are the best. Extensive menu and tasty eats.

A little tiny Irish pub tucked away in a huge parking lot. I've definitely spent tons of time in the surrounding areas but have never even come across this fine little gem until recently. They have great beer and even better food. The atmosphere is carefree and they definitely feel like an authentic Irish pub. It's such a relaxing yet jumpy place and the workers will definitely chat with you about practically anything! Their fish cakes are delightful at brunch and at dinner their chicken fingers are crispy - and don't get me started about portion sizes they are humongous! I would definitely recommend this to anyone seeking a beer after work or a hangover breakfast on the weekend. So glad we found this place!

Absolutely the worst service I have ever had. Ended up leaving before we could order based on the rudeness of waitress. Won't be returning.

I got the turkey dinner daily special and aside from the black hair on top of my turkey, it was dry and has absolutely no flavour. We waited a really long time for a refill. The atmosphere was grungy and definitely didn't feel welcoming. The most attention we received was from the multiple flies around us and our food. Even though we knew about where it was, we walked right past the beautiful two-story historic house initially. We knew by taking a look at the website they do not accept reservations, which was fine with us. We were, however, going on a Friday night. On walking into the main entry, that space was packed wall-to-wall. Within a few short minutes, one of the staff greeted us. They don't exactly have a formal wait list here, from what I could tell. The staff member offered us the drinks menu and asked if we'd like to order something while we waited on a table. We ordered up a couple of pints, then looked around for some open space to stand. They have two standing bar rails, one in the main area near the bar itself and another one in the middle dining area. This place has about the most creative layout of booths and tables I've ever seen. They do have an outdoor patio out back, but we didn't take a look at that. They have quite a few very comfy two-person booths around the interior. It appeared the way the wait list worked was that they either have a phenomenal memory, or they actually use the bar tab you open to work like a wait list. It seems to really be more about how many you have in your party, and the exact size of any tables/booths that open up. We might have waited about 30 minutes or so for our table for two up in the front of the main dining room. Every single person on the wait staff here is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. The beer list is great, loaded up with so many good local and Nova Scotia craft beer options. The food menu is what really makes this place special, though. We were on vacation, so we may have a tendency for our eyes to be bigger than our stomachs can handle. There was just so many amazing looking dishes. We started out with a pickle jar, fried taters, and the tomatoes appetizers. I have to say, and my wife agrees, the tomatoes dish was the best of everything we had. Its made up of sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, shallots, capers, and garlic chips. All that is sitting on top of creme fraiche. By the time you're finishing the dish, you start thinking about a straw to finish up that creme fraiche. Good grief, that was so good. Don't pass on the fried taters, though. Those seemed to be mashed potatoes formed into rectangular big fries, cooked almost like panko and served with horseradish sour cream. After all that, we could only muster splitting the deli style chop salad with cold water shrimp on it. Our great waitress talked us into an order of the brown bread, a very soft kind of Irish soda bread I believe. That bread just melts in your mouth. If you decide to venture out to The Narrows, you're in for a total experience. You'll feel like you stepped back in time to a real British pub... the house must be from somewhere around the mid 1800s. Every room is warm and cozy, with beautiful woodwork and curious antiques in all sorts of nooks and crannies. You may have quite a long wait depending on the size of your party and how busy the place is, but trust me... its worth every minute.

We arrived before the supper rush and while it was busy, the place was not full by any means with multiple empty tables. We sat up in 'The Boat' which is right next to the bar which is an awkward step up but we weren't offered one of the empty tables so we figured it out even though it wasn't conducive to having a conversation with two other people. The server who gave us menus was friendly but failed to bother to bring any water the entire time we sat there (nearly an hour). The first round of drinks showed up fairly promptly and she took our food order right after that. We opted not to get appetizers because we didn't want to eat too much before our show, but had we known how long we'd have to wait, we would have gotten something. We couldn't even order something to share between the four of us because 'The Boat' is two separate tables. We chatted as we waited for our drinks that we finished and waited some more for someone to bring food. After the last drinks were empty for at least 10 minutes, our server came back to ask if we wanted another round. Seeing as we didn't have food yet (we'd already been waiting 30 minutes), I opted out while the three others ordered one. At this point, I wasn't willing to spend more money for poor service and a long wait. We watched as a large group that clearly arrived long before us, finally got their food after 35 minutes of us having put in our order. A couple across from us showed up at least 20 minutes after us, got drinks, food and the bill before we were even offered a second drink or told about where our food was. During the time, we watched as other patrons came in, were served their food and left before our food even arrived. After about 40 minutes, our server came around and said 'it shouldn't be much longer, we're training kitchen staff so it's taking a little longer'. Not our problem, and clearly not true seeing as so many others who arrived after us were getting their food. The entire time we were waiting, servers stood around the register talking and not really checking on tables. By this point, people kept rolling in, the place got busy and we still didn't have our food 45 minutes after ordering. When our orders finally showed up after 53 minutes of being placed, mine wasn't what I ordered. I asked for a pan fried fish burger and got pan fried fish. The server was adamant that's what I ordered and proceeded to tell me that 'the only difference is the bun and veggies, otherwise it's the same fish'. I was quite surprised at the comment rather than offering to make it right. Given we had a waited nearly an hour for our food by this point, I sucked it up and just ate what I got. Service here is definitely lacking and it's clear staff doesn't have the skills required to deal with people. While the food was alright, the sides looked like they were scraped off of other peoples' plates and just thrown onto ours. No one bothered to check on us or apologize. When the bill arrived, I noticed $5.50 taken off and no explanation. I begrudgingly paid the nearly $70 bill for the two of us and decided we wouldn't be back again!

The chowder had tender chunks of lobster, haddock and scallops, and the creamy broth was in the Goldilocks zone of not too thick and not too thin. My wife's chicken and brie roll with a tomato and feta soup was a light but flavourful lunch, and a solid deal at just $15. Bonus points to HH for having GF options for all of their buns and pizzas too! On a return visit after we had moved back to the county, I leaned into the pub side of the menu, and tried the house burger, which comes topped with the usual suspects, plus cheese and bacon. It was a good burger - a thick, pub-style patty, melty cheese, crisp bacon, and the bun held up well. Solid fundamentals, if no real standout elements. The fries were of the crispy-coated variety, which I'm a fan of. Oddly, the ends of each fry were much more browned than the rest, which reminded me of fries that you bake at home. Not a strike against them, it just seemed odd. My wife's shepherd's pie was a hearty plate. The spacious casserole dish was packed with meat and potatoes, and given a non-traditional slathering of melted cheese for good measure. I'm not sure when The Thistle rebranded as a "gastropub", but not too much seems to have changed with their menu or interior. Their food offerings certainly aren't the chef-driven, creative stylings of a true gastropub. That all said, I still appreciate that these guys are open seven days a week, and are actually open beyond 7-8:00pm, unlike many other places in town. I ordered the Farmhouse burger, a now-longtime fixture of The Thistle's menu, which harkens back to the Man vs Food days of food eating challenges and mash-ups of over-the-top (and belt) menus. Comprised of a 6oz patty, two chicken fingers, bacon and cheese, it's all your day's recommended calories in one meal - so efficient! My wife went with one of her go-to choices, the pulled pork sandwich. It wasn't too too busy for a weekend evening, with a wet spring day keeping some people home, so we got our food in good time. Gastropub moniker or no, pub burgers can be a bit hit or miss, depending on how much the cooks actually give a damn about their job, but my Farmhouse turned out quite well. The patty had a nice char and wasn't dry and overcooked, while the chicken fingers and bacon added some savoury crunch. I'd generally not a fan of BBQ sauces on burgers, as the cloying sweetness really isn't necessary, but the chipotle BBQ sauce had a good flavour. The cheese was good and melty, and the bun toasted - checking some more boxes in Burger 101. The fries were *incredibly* plentiful. Like Five Guys amounts of fries! They could cut back a good 20% and no one in their right mind should complain. They were on the oily side, however. I'm not sure if this is from the fryer not being up to temp after doing some orders, or just not having a proper double fry, but this was a missed opportunity for my mound of hand-cut spuds. My wife's pulled pork sandwich was a solid execution of what's now a very common sight on bar menus. Coleslaw and lettuce brought a little texture, while a large Caesar salad was shared between us (I shared fries too, I promise!). The Thistle may be trying to pull the wool over people's eyes with this rebranding, but this dependable bar is a town fixture for a reason. This meal was more hit than miss, and for that, I'll give them a star upgrade nearly 10 years (!!!) after I first reviewed them here.

It was quiet on a Monday evening, and being Pictou County, we were lucky they were open at all. The space is quite open, with thick wooden beams stealing the show, while grey laminate flooring is an almost jarring contrast of modern, lowest price tag renos against the sturdy old bones. We were promptly looked after by the friendly staff, and while I was tempted by some of the monthly specials, I stayed onside with their regular menu, to get a feel for how their regular items. The menu rides a fine line - it's not too small (there's several each of apps, soups/salads, sandwiches and mains) but not so big that it's overwhelming or you're thinking that everything is just coming out of a Sysco freezer bag. While pub standards like burgers, fish and chips and a club sandwich all appear, some effort definitely went into the menu's creation. You're not going to see jackfruit tacos, brisket grilled cheese and mushroom "bruschetta" everywhere! I went for a more standard item, the Mushroom Jack burger, on my aforementioned mission to gauge their kitchen, while my wife opted for the Cranberry Coconut Chicken. With the Monday crowd (or lack thereof), our food was soon before us, and none too soon, given our appetites! My Mushroom Jack burger was quite well executed - honestly, it was much better than I expected it would be. What can I say, a string of mediocre-at-best pubs in Pictou County over the years have left me jaded! The patty was thick (8oz) but not overcooked, or too densely pressed. The mushrooms had an herby hit that paired well with the savoury truffle aioli, and spinach brought some vegetal vibrance. The Monterey Jack cheese lent its salty goodness, while the toasted bun held up well against its messy contents. Across the table, my wife's Cranberry Coconut Chicken was an impressive-looking plate. The dish is gluten-free, which means that the Chex (yes, the cereal) coating on the chicken is gluten-free. Go Chex? Life-long learning, people! Stuffed with herbs and goat cheese, it was definitely more flavourful than your run-of-the-mill chicken breast. A rice pilaf and roasted veg rounded out the dish, while a thin cranberry and citrus sauce brought sweet and tangy notes for contrast, although by the last few bites were swimming in it. On a return visit on a more lively Friday night, it looked like the menu had gotten a refresh, with a whole new slate of tempting items. I stuck to a traditional East Coast offering though - the fish cakes. I checked to make sure they were made in-house (they are), as although I have a perverse love of the High Liner, from-frozen, 99% potato, "fish" cakes, that's not what I want at a restaurant. The fish cakes came on a hefty portion of maple baked beans. No skimpy 2oz cup of beans here! I'm no baked bean connoisseur, and if I were I would deserve to be mocked relentlessly, but these had a good balance of sweet and savoury, and were nicely cooked - they weren't dry and grainy, nor cooked to mush. As for the fish cakes themselves, the respectably-sized cakes had a wonderfully crisp breading, which housed a plesant mix of fish and potato, with discernable shreds of haddock. The flavour profile had a noticeable fish flavour (unlike our friend High Liner's) without being *fishy*. The side of house-made green tomato chow provided a lightly tart and sweet foil for the savoury elements of the dish, with a chunky consistency that puts the store-bought chows that are mainly sugar and vinegar to shame. With food that follows through on the menu's promise of better-than-average pub grub, I can see why The Nook and Cranny is spreading across my neck of the woods, and I look forward to return visits on their patio on warmer days PS. Extra points for maintaining great social media communications and an up-to-date website, which most small town restaurants are decidedly *not* good at.

We had the curry and chips - which was an amazing pulled chicken on top of fries with a great curry gravy. My wife had the Dublin Pastie - which was a puff pastry stuffed with chicken and a bunch of other yummy stuff. The waiter was very good with suggestions on favourites. He made sure to check in on us, we never felt rushed or ignored despite the many people in the pub. Also would recommend you try a flight of the draft beers - the recommended local breweries flight was great in variety and flavour. Would definitely come again!

While the roll itself was small, the lobster salad mix was fresh and tasty. While I generally prefer fresh lobster off the shell with melted butter for my lobster rolls, the one I got from the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse was not bad at all. The Caesar salad, on the other hand, was absolutely phenomenal. I love how every piece of lettuce was well covered in the dressing, served with some of the tastiest croutons I've had. I did not expect that at all. The server was friendly. I also really enjoyed the live music.
