This is a quaint little pub that sits on the water, very clean, the waitress was very fast, and had good suggestions for us, knew a lot about the menu, and was super informative. We ordered the roast beef, which we thought was pretty standard, then I got fish tacos that were well fried and lightly battered, and it didn't have the traditional mayo or avocado, but a Thai sauce with a hint of lemon. Both dishes came with fries, they were kinda average, crispy, and fresh, perfect amount of salt. We would probably go again to this nice little joint. read more

Service was very good. Food lacked flavor for me. I had the lobster roll and salad-the green salad was very good. The lobster roll lacked flavor but not lobster. It is the real deal with no fillers. My husband had the fish and chips which though plentiful and a solid piece of fish, quantity didn't outweigh the lack of flavor. Nice selection of beers. Fries are good. This is a regular stop for my family and me while vacationing on Nova Scotia's beautiful south shore. Set in the middle of the picturesque Mahone Bay, it's a perfect way to close off an afternoon of window shopping, sea kayaking or just strolling around Main Street. A few minutes after seating I was beginning to wonder where my waitress was, but then I remembered - I'm in the Maritimes and I'm on vacation. So I took a deep breath, relaxed and enjoyed the quiet time. Our waitress did show up and she was absolutely wonderful. She even scooped us a coveted patio table after it came available, even after our drinks had arrived. So we sat on the deck on a beautiful sunny day, enjoying a locally crafted beer and some really good food, what could be better. My club was excellent and my son's Jack burger was reported to be delicious. And the fries could be the best I've ever had! I'm hearing some complaints from the gluten-free crowd that restaurants coat their fries to make them crispy. I know from my daughter's brief experiment with glutenfreeism that gluten makes things taste good, so if that's what it takes, I'm all for it. This experience was definitely a 5 but I've been there many times and have to admit we don't always achieve this sort of surreal meal status. None the less, a great stop if you find yourself on the south shore looking for a place to eat or enjoy the local beer. read more

In the 3 weeks we spent all over Nova Scotia, PEI, and New Brunswick this was by far the most disappointing experience. The waitress greeting us was so rude and such a turn off - a short, stout, older blonde lady. It got to the point we were going to leave and the manager came over to help us get seated. We all ordered seafood dishes that were sub par. The "clam chowder' wasn't even edible (4 different people tried it but it was awful. The people beside us ordered mussels and asked to return them due to the smell. Stay away! We ate at Lunenburg that night - way better options! This place will be closed in a year! read more

If you're looking for a family friendly restaurant, keep looking! Our experience was less than stellar from the food to the service received. The kids menu should state that it's recommended for children UNDER 4 years of age. It's ridiculously small. The one burger that comes with the children's meal wouldn't even be called a slider! It looked like a chunk of beef fell off a regular size burger and they threw it up on a bun. The ten fries that come with it don't even attempt to fill a ten year old. The waitress never came back to fill our drinks or ask how everything was. She knew we weren't happy with the meals as soon as she sat them down, but walked away and didn't inquire at all. On the way out, we politely mentioned the size of the kids meal should state its for toddlers, or she should have clearly said based on the age of our child she wouldn't recommend. She didn't say anything in response. That's the moment she lost any semblance of a tip. Poor service from start to finish. After paying, I told her, again politely, that the service was sub par, and I walked out. The waitress started to yell obscenities to my back as I walked out with a full restaurant within earshot. This restaurant should note that not all customers are tourists, and could be repeat customers, however, with customer service as such, we don't be venturing or promoting this restaurant to others anytime in the near future. read more

Nice pub on the water with an incredible view of Mahone Bay. Ample seating inside, a little tight on the patio, but still comfortable. Our server was friendly and attentive. My friend had scallops & fries and I had shrimp tacos & fries. Not a long wait for our food to arrive. Portions were good and we both enjoyed our meals. The Mug & Anchor is located in the beautiful Mahone Bay in a building called Maders Wharf. If you are on a drive along the South Shore it is located on the main street. Although the Mug & Anchor is situate right on the water, with a wonderful view , the food is not the greatest. We ordered a cheese burger, ceasar salad and fish and chips. The burger had to be sent back, it was over cooked, it actually tasted like it was microwaved, maybe sitting around. The salad was a very small portion. The fish and chips were greasy. The waitress was nice, she brought over an extra plate of fries, but that did not make up for the lack of quality in the food. read more

Great down east pub on the shores of Mahone Bay. It has a great deck for when the sun shines. The view is fantastic. There are many beers on tap - don't forget to ask about their house brew for something different. The the jerk burger was a real treat with enough extra flavour to make it stick in my memory. One notable fact about the menu is that it is packaged into bite sized items rather than everything together. You can order just a burger, just fries or get them together. It is a small thing but I found it helped me manage my portions. Of course if you wish to fill up, the fish and chips or clams and chips will do the job. read more

This was the most disgusting meal I have ever had. It took over an hour and a half for four of us. The server didn't come over to refill our water once. She never asked us how the meal was. She literally just dropped the food off, gave me the wrong order. I had ordered a chicken burger with extra mayo, and she brought me a chicken club with mayo on the side, and complained when I wanted extra sauce. My sister got the spinach dip and felt extremely sick from it and couldn't even finish her plate, and my mother tried it and thought the same thing. The place was very dusty and smelled terrible. I was kind of disappointed on my last trip to the Mug and Anchor. I'd been there a couple times before in summers past (always brought friends from out of town there). But I think in my head - I always romanticized the restaurant. The view is beautiful and the deck is kind of nice. But the restaurant is dated, needs renovation and is overall ... tired. The food also wasn't quite as I remembered. I got the Scallops and Fries. I believe the last time I had them, they were breaded. This time, they were pan fried and kind of greasy. Sad! My bf got a burger. It seemed "meh." I wasn't overly impressed. However, the beer and burger was a special for $10.99 or something (so a good deal). On the plus side, the beer was nice and cold. Conclusion: The Mug and Anchor will always exist in a much happier place in my memory. read more

The Mug and Anchor pub is not anything special, unless you're from Halifax and you wanted to get out of town for the day. It's a great place to stop after a couple of hours of taking the scenic view into Mahone Bay. Located above a wonderful antique and second hand shop, it has a fantastic deck with a spectacular waterfront view for when you want a pit stop during your south shore road trip. It's an English-style pub oozing with charm. Tacky floral wallpaper, corner fireplace, cedar beams covered with old beer coasters, and mock mounted Rhino heads and English bulldog carvings line the walls to complete the British pub look. Blimey, they even have a jar of pickled eggs at the bar. The bar has many beers on tap, local and imports, including the new favourite Rolling Rock. We rolled through mid-afternoon on a Monday. The pub was half-full, but service was pretty on point. I ordered the fish and chips. I was glad I only ordered the one-piece, because the servings are large. A foot-long piece of battered haddock topped a plate of crispy, golden fries. The batter, while a bit dense, definitely retained its beer flavour. The fish was flaky. It was good, but very filling. The chicken club was devoured by my boyfriend without complaint, either. All in all, it was a great stop during our afternoon road trip, and definitely someplace I'd like to visit again for a longer stay during another day trip adventure this summer. read more

This pub is located in a lovely spot on the Mahone Bay waterfront. When the windows are open, it has gentle sea breezes wafting through it. Unfortunately, the food here just isn't very good and the whole place needs a thorough top to bottom scrubbing. Some of the table tops are sickeningly sticky, yet excuses are made and the tables are not replaced. The rug is grimy. The bathroom stalks are too short to stand up in and are grubby. The servers here try to do their best and there was a good crowd the evening we ate here. The wait times are reasonable. I had a roast beef au jus sandwich and fries. The beef was tough and overdone but the jus was awful; not made from meat drippings. The fries were a bit soggy. My husband had a pastrami which was a little better but small, and the same fries. We think this pub has enormous potential if only they would take a lesson from the Knot Pub in Lunenburg down the road which is a dank, unappetizing space but has fantastic food at reasonable prices. By comparison, the Knot Pub makes the Mug and Anchor stand out both for its far better location and ambiance and it's greatly inferior food. If you have the time, hit the Knot. Mahone Bay and the owners of this pub could do a lot better for the town residents. At the very least, discard the permanently sticky tables that stick to your elbows, forearms and hands. read more

Most places were already closed, but the Mug & Anchor told us the kitchen was still open for 5 minutes when we arrived. Grateful that we could still get a hot meal, we took a seat on the deck overlooking Mahone Bay. I was surprised when my scallops and chips arrived with a generous portion of scallops cooked just right and a pile of hot, crispy french fries. My husband had the "meat pie" and it was also good. This isn't fine dining, but it is good food and a good deal. We went back the next day for a couple of beers and the mushroom caps with lobster. All of the tables were full the entire time because the day was perfect and the view so pleasant. The staff worked hard to keep everyone happy and they were. read more

Very disappointing. We were looking for a decent beer and some east coast pub food. The waitress, who is also the owner, recommended their new olands tap (nothing special at the best of times). The beer was flat. We ordered the simplest thing on the menu, scallops and fries for 15$ ( pricey for a pub but they apparently local). They were over cooked and served on a clamshell....disgusting. The fries were store bought frozen fries with tartar sauce from a bottle....I'm not sure where tartar sauce with scallops came from but it was a bad choice. The table was sticky and dirty. Overall really disappointing, an east coast pub on the water that can't even get the simplest seafood right. Don't even bother, above average prices for garbage food. read more

This was our third and last trip there. Previous visits we experienced burnt food, a rock in the baked beans - no apology, a stone cold burger and fries - had to chase down the waitress to do something about it, and being totally ignored by the waitress even though it was not busy. In the past, I made 12 attempts to speak with the owner, my husband made 2. Each time she was either too busy, not there, or just left, and never returned calls. My husband had actually made appointments to see her and she never showed (it was at the pub, not off site), never called, never apologized after the fact. Sat friends made a reservation for today, St Patrick's Day. We went, entered and stood right past the bar where we were easily seen. The owner and one waitress walked by us several times over 10 minutes, not once saying welcome or be with you in a minute, nothing. After a couple more minutes, I approaced the waitress. She said they did not take reservations for today. I said one was taken over the phone. She then asked the owner who was also serving. She quite curtly said they did not take any reservations for today and pointed to the full bar stools and said "wait with the rest." We of course left. How rude, how inhospitable, and how obviously she thinks that because she has the only pub in town, she can treat people like that. A new pub will open in this town soon and will easily take their business away. All they have going for them is good entertainment, and those people can be hired to play elsewhere. The Mahone Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Dept should be paying attention to this. This is the kind of treatment that will keep locals and tourists away. read more
