Seems like a space that would transition to a local watering hole later that evening. A great menu, lots of classics and some gluten free options. The seafood chowder was really good, the haddock was also very good, would have like some fries but no gf frier. The washrooms weren't spotless, more pub style than restaurant. Definitely a great spot to have a bite and a drink.

But I still like great tasting food and yet my lunch still can't cost me the same as a car payment. So when I'm in my little home town and I'm after some interesting food that is prepared well and by folks who know how to please a big hungry guy. This is a go to for me. In a pub I want the following and in this order / cold beer not necessarily alcoholic , good tasting food choices that tastes like the proprietor would eat there. He does ! I'm 6 feet 4" I'm after well prepared salads and I want crisp fresh fixings with choices of dressings and various protein things I can leave in or out - onions not my favourite - but hey that's me. These guys are pros - totally. The guy who owns that place knows his craft - well ! He's focused on the job - he hires good people with the same philosophy - I like this guys attitude. Never once been offered sub standard grub. Nope these guys are smart and proud of what the cook has just made only seconds before the front end staff rushed it to my table. I often have the specials - a rescent trip 5000 kms back to Bridgewater gave me an opportunity to try their fish special and then another time the pulled pork. Each with an interesting crisp side salad. Cold .5 beer - so I can still focus when I'm done. So 10/10 ? Absolutely delicious - and yet very reasonably priced. My two prime YET not only concern's. I like focused staff, smart conversation and professional pride in one's job. That's this place. The River Pub - North side of King St. near the new bridge east of Victoria Rd I've not found a better Pub in town. Now remember your thirsty and hungry - these guys can solve that.

We've been looking forward to eating here for some…read moretime so we invited the new neighbours for dinner before a show, but we definitely won't be back. We arrived before the supper rush and while it was busy, the place was not full by any means with multiple empty tables. We sat up in 'The Boat' which is right next to the bar which is an awkward step up but we weren't offered one of the empty tables so we figured it out even though it wasn't conducive to having a conversation with two other people. The server who gave us menus was friendly but failed to bother to bring any water the entire time we sat there (nearly an hour). The first round of drinks showed up fairly promptly and she took our food order right after that. We opted not to get appetizers because we didn't want to eat too much before our show, but had we known how long we'd have to wait, we would have gotten something. We couldn't even order something to share between the four of us because 'The Boat' is two separate tables. We chatted as we waited for our drinks that we finished and waited some more for someone to bring food. After the last drinks were empty for at least 10 minutes, our server came back to ask if we wanted another round. Seeing as we didn't have food yet (we'd already been waiting 30 minutes), I opted out while the three others ordered one. At this point, I wasn't willing to spend more money for poor service and a long wait. We watched as a large group that clearly arrived long before us, finally got their food after 35 minutes of us having put in our order. A couple across from us showed up at least 20 minutes after us, got drinks, food and the bill before we were even offered a second drink or told about where our food was. During the time, we watched as other patrons came in, were served their food and left before our food even arrived. After about 40 minutes, our server came around and said 'it shouldn't be much longer, we're training kitchen staff so it's taking a little longer'. Not our problem, and clearly not true seeing as so many others who arrived after us were getting their food. The entire time we were waiting, servers stood around the register talking and not really checking on tables. By this point, people kept rolling in, the place got busy and we still didn't have our food 45 minutes after ordering. When our orders finally showed up after 53 minutes of being placed, mine wasn't what I ordered. I asked for a pan fried fish burger and got pan fried fish. The server was adamant that's what I ordered and proceeded to tell me that 'the only difference is the bun and veggies, otherwise it's the same fish'. I was quite surprised at the comment rather than offering to make it right. Given we had a waited nearly an hour for our food by this point, I sucked it up and just ate what I got. Service here is definitely lacking and it's clear staff doesn't have the skills required to deal with people. While the food was alright, the sides looked like they were scraped off of other peoples' plates and just thrown onto ours. No one bothered to check on us or apologize. When the bill arrived, I noticed $5.50 taken off and no explanation. I begrudgingly paid the nearly $70 bill for the two of us and decided we wouldn't be back again!

Plus there was a ton of lobster in the pasta, the sauce was divine and the salad dressing was fresh and super garlicky. The vibe was very cool, place was packed with lots of very friendly locals and tourists, everyone chatty, super fun. Super friendly staff, Michelle was lovely and had excellent recommendations for both food and drink. Another meal

We stood for a couple minutes in front of the "Please wait to be seated" sign while a couple of the staff huddled about their counter, and had a little discussion. " No we don't have any tables for you" " How about the dining room back there?" She just repeated herself- gave no explanation. Appeared to me they had decided their work day was over! I had the Chicken Souvlaki ($18.99). It came with white rice, pita bread, salad, and tzatziki. The chicken was so dry and tough. It tasted like it was reheated multiple times over. I was so disappointed. At least it was lean breast meat and not fatty nor gristley. Dipping it in the tzatziki did help. The tzatziki was creamy and quite good. The rice, like the chicken, was also dry, and it had clumpy bits. It was also just plain white rice. I was expecting a pilaf. The salad was great though. It was a real spring mix of greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and feta cheese. Vegetables were fresh. The only thing is I asked for the dressing on the side and the salad came already dressed. It had a bit too much dressing for my liking, but wasn't too excessive. I noticed that my husband's uncle, the host of our dinner, also ordered the Chicken Souvlaki, and his plate had the salad dressing on the side (he did not request the dressing on the side). I think the server gave him my plate, and gave me his plate. He had already started eating, and the dressing on my salad wasn't excessive, plus I didn't want to have to wait for them to remake the salad, so I didn't say anything and just ate the plate that was given to me. My husband's uncle said that he was disappointed with the Chicken Souvlaki that day as the meat was dry and they "usually do better." He's a regular, so I guess they were having a bad night in the kitchen. My husband had one of the daily specials, which was a shrimp carbonara. He said it was very good. There were some in our party who had the fish and chips and they thought it was excellent. Although one person had the Cajun Haddock, which was another daily special, and thought it was tough and overcooked, but she loved the mashed potatoes. So it looks like your mileage may vary depending on what you order. My husband and I shared the Reese's Peanut Butter cake and it was rich, decadent and delicious. Others who had the homemade cheesecake with blueberry sauce loved it and one person even said it was one of the best cheesecakes he's ever had. We were a large group of 13 and our server did a great job (with the exception of swapping the "dressing on the side" Chicken Souvlaki and the "pre-dressed salad" Chicken Souvlaki). He was super friendly and welcoming. He handled our group on his own, so I can forgive the mistake. The restaurant has a bowling alley in it, as well as slot machines. They also had dart boards. It's the kind of bar/pub I would expect in a small town. There is free parking in their lot, but you can also park down by the Tourist Bureau for free, which is what we did. It's a short walk from there. There are not too many dining options in Liverpool, NS, and my husband's uncle picked this place because they could accommodate our large group and would be able to serve us all rather quickly. I wasn't thrilled with my main course, but it seems like the kitchen is usually better, or so I've been told. I might have caught them on a bad night, or they aren't used to large groups. So I guess your mileage may vary.
