Fo'c'sle Tavern is in downtown Chester. You will always find a happy crowd here at the tavern. In the summer the streets are lined with cars and bikes. It is nothing to see 50 bikes ride through the streets. There is a large bar area with a flat screen TV for all the sport fans. Tables are scattered throughout the main area as well. I personally like the back area because I get to people watch. Also there is a great fire place to warm you up in the winter. The tavern has been used for a few movies as well. They do have some of The Best Homemade Fries. They are thin and great, they are always on the table for us. The food here is good, it is tavern food. The entertainment here is great. You can find anything from live on Friday nights, auctions, fund raisers or just go with a bunch of friends. There is lot of character packed into Fo'c'sle Tavern and a lot of characters as well. All Good!!!!

I came here with some family around noon on a foggy winters day looking for a cozy place to chill. Most stores and the eating/drinking establishments are closed for the winter season so it was nice to find a welcoming spot. The place has a very nice old pub feel/decorated there is plenty of seating. This was especially noticeable since we were the only people there. It's divided into halves, with one half having tables by the sports tv, pool table, bar and VLTs, and the other half being more of a restaurant setting. Aside from the regular menu, there was also a brunch menu, probably because it was early on a Sunday. It looked pretty good (I uploaded a pic of it). The regular menu looked very typical for a traditional Atlantic Canadian pub with plenty of seafood and more traditional Canadian fare. I saw 12 beers on tap on the menu, many of which are local. There's also an extensive bottled beer and coolers menu. Daily drink specials are a really good price, ranging between $1 to $2. I can't think of many other places that offer such good specials on drinks (I should probably also mention that I don't go to bars much, so my experience is limited).

It's Boxing Day and ... we're at the pub, even though we had to drive to Chester to find one that's open!

Some friends of ours in Chester took us here a few months ago. We weren't terribly enthusiastic at first, because we hadn't visited in quite a few years and our last experience had branded the Fo'c'sle a run-down tavern with not terribly good beer. What a difference some changes have made! The authentic tavern surroundings are the same, but everything has been spruced up, without losing any of its charm. The beer was great and the food was fantastic! We get used to good fish and chips here on the South Shore, but the Fo'c'sle's was superb. Good service, great food, great drinks and a really historic atmosphere in one of Nova Scotia's prettiest villages. What's not to like?

    Love it!!

The Foc'sle is the oldest rural tavern in Nova Scotia (Est. 1764). The decor is very inviting and has the perfect tavern atmosphere with lots of wood, unique lighting and amusing wall decorations. The best part is the Fo'c'sle burger! I am glad I waited to have my first Nova Scotian burger here. The burger comes with grilled onions, mushrooms, cheese and bacon and is only 10.95. The fries are done perfectly and are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My friends had the crispy chicken wrap, the chowder and the club and all were very happy with their choices as well. The server Shane is particularly funny and made our lunch even more enjoyable. They have specials on certain days as well - Tuesday is burger day and trivia and Thursday is wing night. I will return for the scrumptious burger!

Filthy glasses, microwaved food and frozen fries they advertise as fresh cut. Definitely will not return. Dine at your own peril.

Our first visit here really missed the mark. We've been looking forward to eating here for some…read moretime so we invited the new neighbours for dinner before a show, but we definitely won't be back. We arrived before the supper rush and while it was busy, the place was not full by any means with multiple empty tables. We sat up in 'The Boat' which is right next to the bar which is an awkward step up but we weren't offered one of the empty tables so we figured it out even though it wasn't conducive to having a conversation with two other people. The server who gave us menus was friendly but failed to bother to bring any water the entire time we sat there (nearly an hour). The first round of drinks showed up fairly promptly and she took our food order right after that. We opted not to get appetizers because we didn't want to eat too much before our show, but had we known how long we'd have to wait, we would have gotten something. We couldn't even order something to share between the four of us because 'The Boat' is two separate tables. We chatted as we waited for our drinks that we finished and waited some more for someone to bring food. After the last drinks were empty for at least 10 minutes, our server came back to ask if we wanted another round. Seeing as we didn't have food yet (we'd already been waiting 30 minutes), I opted out while the three others ordered one. At this point, I wasn't willing to spend more money for poor service and a long wait. We watched as a large group that clearly arrived long before us, finally got their food after 35 minutes of us having put in our order. A couple across from us showed up at least 20 minutes after us, got drinks, food and the bill before we were even offered a second drink or told about where our food was. During the time, we watched as other patrons came in, were served their food and left before our food even arrived. After about 40 minutes, our server came around and said 'it shouldn't be much longer, we're training kitchen staff so it's taking a little longer'. Not our problem, and clearly not true seeing as so many others who arrived after us were getting their food. The entire time we were waiting, servers stood around the register talking and not really checking on tables. By this point, people kept rolling in, the place got busy and we still didn't have our food 45 minutes after ordering. When our orders finally showed up after 53 minutes of being placed, mine wasn't what I ordered. I asked for a pan fried fish burger and got pan fried fish. The server was adamant that's what I ordered and proceeded to tell me that 'the only difference is the bun and veggies, otherwise it's the same fish'. I was quite surprised at the comment rather than offering to make it right. Given we had a waited nearly an hour for our food by this point, I sucked it up and just ate what I got. Service here is definitely lacking and it's clear staff doesn't have the skills required to deal with people. While the food was alright, the sides looked like they were scraped off of other peoples' plates and just thrown onto ours. No one bothered to check on us or apologize. When the bill arrived, I noticed $5.50 taken off and no explanation. I begrudgingly paid the nearly $70 bill for the two of us and decided we wouldn't be back again!

Plus there was a ton of lobster in the pasta, the sauce was divine and the salad dressing was fresh and super garlicky. The vibe was very cool, place was packed with lots of very friendly locals and tourists, everyone chatty, super fun. Our main course was crispy cod tails on lemon risotto topped with a terrific sauce of caramelized corn. The sauce was spicy and made the dish. For desert we had a lovely blueberry concoction with the unappealing name of "blueberry grunt"! This wasn't foodie food but super fresh ingredients prepared simply and beautifully. After dinner we moved into the main dining room for a terrific musician playing mostly NS folk music. All in all it was a great evening. Great food, great music, friendly people. We were keeping a close eye on time. At 6:48 we asked about the order and we were told it had only been 20 mins. Not true! At 7:10- still no sign of food - so at 7:13 we decided to get it all to go. We left a 10% tip despite slow service. The other table of four had been served, had eaten, and left by 7:05. I ordered fish and chips. Batter bit thick so uncooked inner dough in few places but fish was delicious. The chips??? I'm just going to post a picture showing total - quantity minus one chip - couldn't eat them! Cole slaw delicious. If you go before a show give them two hours! I honestly think the order was held up. Maybe lots of orders ahead?? but that other table had plenty of time! And they were literally less than 5 minutes at most ahead of us!
