Seems like a space that would transition to a local watering hole later that evening. A great menu, lots of classics and some gluten free options. The seafood chowder was really good, the haddock was also very good, would have like some fries but no gf frier. The washrooms weren't spotless, more pub style than restaurant. A great spot - my other food favourite in Bridgewater, N.S. I take photographs for a living and I once lived near here (Bridgewater) but now I am often on the other side of the country. But I still like great tasting food and yet my lunch still can't cost me the same as a car payment. So when I'm in my little home town and I'm after some interesting food that is prepared well and by folks who know how to please a big hungry guy. This is a go to for me. In a pub I want the following and in this order / cold beer not necessarily alcoholic , good tasting food choices that tastes like the proprietor would eat there. He does ! I'm 6 feet 4" I'm after well prepared salads and I want crisp fresh fixings with choices of dressings and various protein things I can leave in or out - onions not my favourite - but hey that's me. These guys are pros - totally. The guy who owns that place knows his craft - well ! He's focused on the job - he hires good people with the same philosophy - I like this guys attitude. Never once been offered sub standard grub. Nope these guys are smart and proud of what the cook has just made only seconds before the front end staff rushed it to my table. I often have the specials - a rescent trip 5000 kms back to Bridgewater gave me an opportunity to try their fish special and then another time the pulled pork. Each with an interesting crisp side salad. Cold .5 beer - so I can still focus when I'm done. So 10/10 ? Absolutely delicious - and yet very reasonably priced. My two prime YET not only concern's. I like focused staff, smart conversation and professional pride in one's job. That's this place. Try the burgers! Wow they did a fantastic job on their burgers and by fan this place had the best staff. So good with our littles, and thy understood right away the kids were hungry so they put their order in right away and brought them coloring and made sure they had waters right off the bat. The seafood chowder was warm and delightful and both burgers we ordered were incredible! Bathrooms are near the front, large but no baby change table. This was my first time coming to this location and it was absolutely beautiful. A few locals have said that it is a very hit or miss, cook pending. I gotta say, whoever was cooking this food did one stellar job. We went for lunch, it wasn't too busy. The wait time for food was appropriate and the service was also well done. The food itself was so good, it was hard to choose which meal to get because it all sounded so amazing but I feel like I got the perfect one for me! We have never had a bad experience at the River Pub. It is our go-to place to eat when we have some extra money to eat out (due to the ever increasing cost of everything thanks to our dictator pm). The food is always wonderful, the staff is always cheerful and helpful. I am disappointed that they played host to said dictator when it visited our town mid-March and especially after reading someone else's review that the locals had to leave the restaurant to accommodate this person.... Believe me, hosting this "person" did nothing to help your reputation. However, putting aside that disagreeable situation, we will continue to frequent the River Pub because, honestly, there is nothing else in town that compares with their food. Sitting on the deck, over the river in the summer, is such a treat. read more

The seafood chowder was very good/great. The fried pepperoni was OK. The Reuben with requested chicken substitution was OK. The Hamburger was very dry/well done (they did not ask how I wanted it done)... I added a full layer of ketchup, three separate times and it was still dry. It was also flavorless, even with all the ketchup, bacon and raw onions I added (they charged $1 for the small condiment cup of onions!!!). Our waitress was friendly and as attentive as she could be with as busy as she was. Note: Bathrooms were in the basement and appeared clean, BUT, the smell was overpowering like a summer camp outhouse. read more

I've had a few good meals here but in my opinion they have downsized some items and raised prices. Tonight I had 2 piece fish and chips - the fillets were small, the batter greasy and the French fries were over done, so 5 out of 10 - but what really PMO was paying $9.45 for a 14 Oz draft. I can't ever remember paying that much for a draft of any size in a pub. I'll think twice before going back. Nice location and good service but this visit only gets 2 stars. read more

Upon entering the pub and kindly asking if we could sit on the terrasse since we were visiting Nova Scotia for the first time, we were refused access outside under false pretense (thundershowers that never came). That is why when, other patrons were seated outside and then another group and another... we were pretty disappointed and frustrated. We went to the Pub to enjoy a night out with the guys while in Bridgewater for a soccer tournament -- a couple of drinks and some food was the goal. It started out fine as the group of 11 of us ordered some drinks while we looked over the menu. The pub wasn't too packed but steady. It did go downhill from there however. We placed our orders and most continued to buy drinks. A few guys moved out to the patio to enjoy the sunny evening while the rest remained inside while we waited for some other tables to open up outside. The found took well over an hour to come -- pub food nothing complicated -- and a number of tables arrived and were served their food before ours arrived. Some mix up in orders ensued and the food was not good. Further, the staff made it difficult for us to get additional tables outside as they freed up. I cannot recommend this pub for food, speed of service, nor service. read more

This is my English husband's favourite local pub -- he says they keep the Propeller Bitter really well, better than The Knot does, in Lunenburg. We often drive into town to shop, and schedule a trip to The River, books in hand, to while away an hour. Great waitstaff who always pull the pint as soon as they see us come through the door :) The food is most uninspired pub food, but the curls (fries) are really very good. We went in to The River Pub after reading the reviews. Though not much to look at from the outside, the inside was warm and welcoming and relaxed. The food was very good and the portions generous. The Lumberjack burger was huge and could have fed two, especially with the mountain of fries. Our waitress was wonderful and attentive. Visited this location for the first time recently, mid afternoon on a weekday. It wasn't overly busy, so there wasn't much noise and we had an opportunity to enjoy great ambiance and the beautiful view. Our server was absolutely fantastic- she is truly great at her job. I had a chicken breast sandwich with Swiss and creme fraiche - not sure which it was but it was fantastic. My husband had the fish and chips which he had no criticism of. The river pub makes one of my favourite burgers, called the prime rib burger, pretty much loaded with everything you can get fries, curls or salad for side. The servers are always friendly, they have a patio on the Lahave River that islovely in the summer, and prices very reasonable, my only complaint can be really loud in there and portion size can fluctuate from visit to visit. read more

Last week my boyfriend and I chose to have supper at the river pub,first time for myself ever eating here and the worst experience I have ever had, we were told to have a seat and someone will be right with us, it than was about a half hour before anyone came to give us menus and to ask us what we would like to drink, a half hour, I was ready to walk out at that point but we got our drinks and menus. We had chosen what we wanted for our meals and than it took another half hour and a dirty look from my boyfriend to the waiter for him to come take our order, than it took them a half hour to bring us our meals after we ordered, the only quick thing about this experience was us eatungnour meals and the time it took them to refill our drinks while we waited for our meals....not a good experience at all read more

Was working in Bridgewater for the day and had to pick a spot to eat with five coworkers, so chose this based on referrals. We didn't see any available parking meter on the street out front, so parked at an empty lot kitty-corner that had a shut down business. The street lights took quite a while to change, after we had pressed the button, so the gang of us ended up jaywalking to get to the pub after a couple of minutes. LOL This obviously has nothing to do with the place itself, but was still part of the experience. Anyway, once we stepped inside, we walked past the VLT machines on the left, the bar on the right, and were greeted by a friendly server who asked if we were a party of one. (great sense of humour, as we were obviously more than that). Got an eight-seater table by the window, overlooking the river of crazy, thick fog. The whole restaurant itself is not very large, with maybe a dozen tables max? Your typical pub style with wooden tables, some wall decor including a mini faux canoe, some stained-glass windows. The menu looks very standard, but is definitely above average for taste. My veggie burger was delicious (9.99 with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, relish, mayo, mustard & pickle. And fries) and it takes a lot for me to use that word...DEEElicious. I hope they didn't sneak me real beef, but it was that awesome (juicy, just the right size, flavorful). Three of my coworkers ordered the daily special of the Cuban sandwich with curly fries (I don't see it on the menu unfortunately, *see my picture), but it looked good and all said they were very satisfied. Another ordered the chicken Quesadillas (11.99 salsa, cheddar & mozzarella, peppers, onions and tomatoes stuffed in a flour tortilla and served with sour cream), with side garden salad, and was equally impressed. The timing was good, our server was friendly, overall it was good as a pub can get, if you like that sort of place. Obviously, I'd go back. Not in the area very often from Halifax, but may have to take a drive next summer to check the place out for brunch/lunch. read more

We stopped here late one afternoon because my wife needed power for her laptop to complete some work. I had a beer and the fish and chips. Both were good. The place has a "Cheers" (the TV-show) kind of feel to it, with lots of "local" talk at the bar. It has its own beer, brewed by Propeller (which I didn't try only because I'm not partial to wheat-style beer). It also has Rickard's and Keith's on tap, as well as (if I recall) some English beer. During a drive around Nova Scotia's south shore, we were looking for a small light snack. We stopped in Bridgewater and found this small (by New Yorkers terms) bar that was open. The menu look similar to other pubs, but the food was so much better. I had the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich, and the fries were great (have them with vinegar. I had never tried them this way, but really liked it). Very pleasant atmosphere, large screen TV's all around. While we ate inside, there is seating outside and beautiful view up the LaHarve River. read more

Come here every week on our annual trip to Nova Scotia from Germany (usually 4 weeks). I always go for the wings, which are good-sized, sizzling hot and fair-priced. My wife has something else every time and has never been disappointed. Service is always very friendly and the meals arrive quickly when the place isn't too full. Well Bridgewater is definitely lacking in ANY kind of restaurants really. If you like fast food, well this is the town for you. There aren't very many "pubs" or local establishments here either. So, unfortunately, you are left with this restaurant/pub/bar...whatever. I cannot say that I have ever left this place without shaking my head and wondering why I wasted my money here. The wait staff are very good. They try their best. The kitchen/food is HORRIBLE...seriously bad. You would have to be pretty hungry to think that this is good. But hey only shindig in town I guess or close to it. I would have to say that they rely on their regulars cause it is not anything I would recommend. Sorry! read more
