The chicken burgers still taste the same to me but they don't give you a combo now on your birthday lol

Never had a good meal here. Service is slow. I don't understand why its still in business tbh

So.... this used to be THE place to go in Bedford, a place you knew had a friendly staff, and good food. Well no more ....so disappointing. First of all the staff couldn't have been more morose and completely checked out mentally. Not one seemed happy to be alive, honestly they all seemed to be waiting to UN alive themselves any second. I have seen more life in a funeral home. In all seriousness , I don't expect a song and dance, but staff who at least speak and don't have the saddest faces I have ever seen would have been nice. The food was not great either, soggy fries, the chicken burger had very little chicken in it, and the chocolate shake had Zero chocolate in it.... I went back to the counter and said that this vanilla shake was supposed ro be chocolate.... the staff member said " oh " made a new one put it on the counter and said not one more word. .. Also the milk shakes used to be made with ice cream. . Not any more. I can say thie will be the last time we visit this place that was once an icon ... so sad. read more

The fact that chickens die, just to end up at this place, is probably the most tragic thought I can think of at the moment. I ate here during burger week last year. I believe they had some sort of taco themed burger, and it wasn't bad. It wasn't the best burger id had, but certainly not the worst. Was meaning to try this place again on a regular day and unfortunately that day was today. I grabbed a chicken burger with fries while my fiance got the clam strips and a cheeseburger. I opened the bag to see 2 tiny little wrapped bags inside which ended up being the burgers. I took out my burger and was disappointed already. I expected a grilled patty or even a breaded patty. Nope. Just shredded chicken. I opened the buns and inside was a massacre. No sauce, no lettuce/tomato, no seasoning, no cheese. Literally just shredded chicken in a shitty bun. I googled them to see if maybe that's how they're supposed to come, because I was thinking they forgot my ingredients. Yep, that's just how they serve them. Dry chicken and bread tasted bland, and the fries were likely McCain. Boring. Fiancé's burger was miniature and bland as well. If you are someone who recommends this place, I shame you. This is the kind of food I'd put together from the fridge 3 days after a chicken dinner, high and drunk at 2am.. though something I'd make from chicken scraps would probably still be better. read more

The Chicken Burger, what can you say other than Good! This is a must for a one time for sure. It is always packed. There is the line for the people who want to order and sit in the car to eat. Then the other line is for the ones like us, who want to take advantage of the decor, jump back to Happy Days, I expected The Fonz to walk through the door. For .25 you can listen to a tune on the Jukebox. You will find some of he oldies on there. It was a mixed crowd that day, old , young, and the in between, me. The chicken burger's were plentiful that day and I notice the cheese burgers looked pretty slamin. That will be on the menu for next time. You can get a meal deal for $8.00, comes with a chicken burger , fries or onion rings and drink. We actually substituted the drink for a milkshake. All was good! read more

Steamed diced chicken in gooey white buns - something so simple, and yet. The stuff of dreams. All Haligonians refer reverentially to The Chickenburger, with good reason. Their fries are also DELICIOUS, as well as their milkshakes. Not bad little burgers, either. The soup is good - I ask for not too much stuff so I basically have a side of broth for dipping etc. Don't even think of trying the new chicken poutine. Tastes like change - eulch. I also saw a sign for whole wheat buns. Wheat the F****... The jukebox is now free, which makes me feel ambivalent...What of asking mom for 8 quarters and totally bogarting the joint with Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, Suspicious Minds, etc? We tried the Chicken Burgers for the first time last weekend and had a great experience. The vintage settings - bar stools, jukebox, coke ads etc. were so awesome! We could not resist trying their milkshakes - chocolate for me, vanilla for him. Thick, cream & delicious. Food-wise, I opted for the original chicken burger and it was also great. WOW! What a great place! I felt as if I was living back in the 50's when I went to this restaurant! The Chicken Burger has been around since the 1940's and it's the oldest drive in restaurant in Canada. Other than a few renovations, the restaurant still looks the way it did 50 years ago. They have a lot of old pictures hanging and it is incredibly how much it hasn't changed! When I first heard of the Chicken Burger, I thought it was going to be a deep friend, breaded chicken burger....NOPE! It is real chicken that is chopped and steamed between a fresh bun. I ordered 2 chicken burgers (not that big) and an order of onion rings and a famous chocolate shake. WOW! I was stuffed to the brim (I think the shake put me over) and it was yummmmy! It was costly compared to other fast food restaurants I've been to, but totally worth it. I will definitely continue to eat at the Chicken Burger. Apparently, it's a famous stop for travellers and bikers and folks with antique cars. It is pretty popular in the summertime and is quite the 'hangout' for adults. They have many tables outside so it would be a great place to stop for a shake and a bit to eat on a hot day. read more

Although I've only been here less than 5x and can't comment on what their food is typically like; what they served to me was a dry burger with a bland meat paddy! I'll never eat here again. Not for that price and quality. As for the "works". The burger had relish and mustard on it. Nothing else. The fries were not worth mentioning either. No seasoning, somewhat soft and they got cold quickly. They looked like cheap fries from the grocery store you toss in the oven. The fountain pop was what you would expect from fountain pop. Oh jeez. I'm going to get some serious hateration over this review but I just really feel like I should weigh in with my take on this Bedford landmark. Before you start forming the angry mob to come burn down my house and kill my monster (wait - who said monster? I didn't build a monster...), hear me out and remember this is just one person's opinion. For starters, I should be clear in saying I think The Chicken Burger is a five-star idea. The sixty-year history, the authentic retro vibe, the walk-up order window, the jukebox, there truly is SO much to love about this place as a venue. And frankly, despite everything you're about to read, I really would be sad to see this place go even though I'm only ever a customer once ever four or five years. But then there's the food. Even if we don't talk about the fact that as a vegetarian I can't eat anything there besides fries, onion rings, and milkshakes (the only of the three that I'd put above the fast food status quo), there MUST be something I'm not getting about the very burgers after which this place is named. I mean, it's literally chicken pieces on a bun. That's it. No sauce, no veggies, no cheese...just chicken and bread. I know, I know...they're probably sticking to the exact same formula that made them what they are today, but c'mon...no sauce? Dear Chicken Burger, Did you know you're my favorite place to eat in Halifax? Well, you are! Love, Adam I think, if I had the wheels, the money and the time I would eat here everyday. This is a place that always delivers for me. In all the years I've been visiting the Chicken Burger, I've never had a bad experience. I love taking old friends, new friends, family and well wishers out here, especially if they've never been. They usually walk away with a new love. Maybe I'm biased, I don't know why, but no other joint in the city gets me as stoked as the Chicken Burger. I love the 50's diner motif, I always flip through the juke box when I go there and pick out a few songs to play (Yes, I'm that annoying guy), for some reason it just makes me happy. Now I'm not going to say the Chicken Burger is a flawless establishment, but I will admit that I even find its flaws a little charming. The fact that they never turn the heat on means this place can be a little chilly in the winter, the war you have to wage to get additional cups for condiments (you will never get more than three tiny cups, ever.) is tedious and the fact that a lot of the staff are very young and can seem overwhelmed by too many customers can be annoying. But I don't care, the food is tasty, the Chicken Burgers are out of this world and the fish and chips are among the best in the city. I guess when it comes down to it, I have a lot of really great memories with a lot of really great people attached to this place. This is the worst place I have ever eaten in quite possibly my lifetime. I of course knew this place as a staple of Halifax/Bedford for their classic chicken burgers and 50's atmosphere. So with anticipation my boyfriend and I were finally ready to try. We showed up, the floors were a mess. Feels kind of dirty that where you order feels and looks like a sidewalk with wrappers all over the floor. We ordered the classic chicken burger and fries. I really have no idea how anyone could possibly give this place a positive reivew it was a soggy tiny little burger with the scraps of some old chicken on a bun. All brown dark meat, and what I suppose you would consider to be gravy on it. Also some quick microwaved shoestring fries. ABSOUTLY the most horrid event that has ever taken place in my mouth. The Chickenburger was my Diner de Jour for Father's day this year. Rather than drop $100 at some D'mouth Crossing big box restaurant, we decided Father's Day is about the company not the atmosphere. My family asked 3 times "you're SURE you wanna go to the Chickenburger for Father's Day" The last time we were there a few weeks ago we were pleasantly surprised to find they had a second outdoor patio, behind the Chick, where the Innis house used to be. Even though it is only picnic tables on a piece of grass the new vantage point was nice and the ton of space between each table gave a sense of privacy even though we were out in the open. On Father's Day, for whatever reason (maybe grass cutting) all the picnic tables were tilted against the trees so I made my was to the more congested outdoor patio while the family went to order the food. For my special day I decided on a Chickenburger (of course) with fried onions, a double cheesburger with fried onions and ketchup, small fries, small onion rings and a strawberry shake. Yum yum YUM yum Y-U-M! The chickenburgers are real chunks of chicken. Not a preformed piece of chicken-type meat. Real chunks. Get the Hearty whole wheat bun if you really want. The burgers are real meat balls, thrown on the grill and pressed flat (once on each side) by real humans. You need to know that the gillmasters have worked their way up through the ranks until the chain of command deem them to be ready to go on the gill. There are quirky things you find out after coming to the Chicken burger for a while. Like: - DON'T ask for lettuce or tomato on your burger. Chicken burger apparently has NEVER put lettuce or tomato on their burgers. Once about 15 years or so ago when CB won Canada's Best Burger contest, a letter to the editor of the Chronical Herald protested because when he was at Chickenburger and kind of insisted on having lettuce and tomatoes he says he was invited to go next door to fast food burger joint where he could get lettuce and tomato on his frozen and then thawed burger-out-of-the-warmer. - If you ask for "the works" on your burger you should know that "the works" does not include ketchup. I am not really sure what "the works" DOES include, but I know it doesn't include ketchup. The shakes are some of the best around, and you will NOT suck a filling out when drinking one through a straw. You will pay a bit more for the meals here like $8 instead of $7, but I think it is good value for money. And after you finish your meal, go next door to Chicken Little for your ice cream treat. A few year's ago as the story goes, the owner's 15 yo son suggested to his dad that they should have an ice cream stand. So his dad said "Ok, do it" TIP: if you get a double scoop, get it in a cup. It doesn't drip and thy put a LOT of ice cream on their double scoop. read more

This is my first experience at the chicken burger. I've heard many things, so I figured it's about time to bite the chicken and giver a go. It's pretty well what I expected for a 50s style restaurant. It's good. But not over the top wowzers. The burger would have been dry without the suggestion of mayo from the girlfriend. The fries... Had I had them there, would have been good and hot, but we opted to get it to go. Great portion of fries but a little on the cold side by the time we ventured back to our apartment ( about 10 minutes) we had 2 combo number 1 and it came to about 17$.... Fair enough. The burger was tasty, but again would have been a little on the dry side without the addition of mayo. The staff was friendly and the place seemed good and clean. This is a "Halifax classic" and even though I'm picky with my food and my reviews, I'm always honest. I would go back but would like to sit and experience what is the best of the chicken Burger and really take in that classic chicken Burger feel. read more

The Chick!!! Hells to the yes. I've loved coming to this place ever since I was a kid. I think I appreciated a good milkshake and chickenburger from such a historical place at a little age. Now I realize just how old school it is. 1940! Chhhyea. The oldest drive in restaurant in Canada, you know you want to check it out if you haven't already. Drop a coin in the jukebox, sit on the cool 50's chairs and take a trip back 70 years ago. A simple yet sturdy menu. The portion sizes aren't huge but they work for me. Jud was definitely still hungry. It certainly isn't gourmet but you are really going for the atmosphere in combination with the food. I've heard the soft serve ice cream is da bomb and I see a ton of the oldies rockin' the fish and chips. My go-to is the cheeseburger with fries. A chocolate milkshake doesn't hurt either. Be forewarned though, don't think you'll be spending all your time yacking to your date. You'll be up out of your chairs checking out the cool photos on the walls. There is a ton of history in there! Just think of how many butts sat on your very chair. The food is good but not awesome. You really have to look at it as a package deal. read more

Over the years the chick has changed a lot. It used to be owned by the same family that had originally opened the a stand on the same property in Bedford over 50 years ago. It was bought a few years ago by another group and since then they have seemingly done their best to drive a stake through heart of the place. They had added new buildings, an ice cream shack, and the quality of everything has gone down hill. I have just gotten back from trying their burger week offering, a piece of butter milk friend chicken on a cheese burger with a honey mustard sauce. I am not sure how I feel about it because while the burger was great the chicken was just....crunchy. I say crunchy which is normally a good thing when other adjectives can also be used but this chicken wasn't flavorful, it wasn't spicy, it was just....a crunch patty and some extra protein. Also while I write this I will admit I worked here, I worked here for years and I have eaten here since I was born and to see it become this parody of itself is pretty sad. The cherry on this sadness Sunday is the replacement of the old neon chicken and plastic sign with a flower bed around it into a tacky led screen monstrosity with bad power point slides on it. All the old staff have seemingly gone away, left are a few long timers and a series of new faces every time I go in and I am not sure if that is because they go through staff a lot or because I no longer go in because of the drop in quality. read more

They also have one of the best burgers anywhere. Seating is limited but after all it's a drive in. Walk up to the window get a chicken burger, fries or rings, soft drink and enjoy. The Chicken Burger is great! There really is no other need to say anything else. But I will explain. This restaurant has given itself a 50's or 60's Diner feel to it. It even has a Jukebox. It is located outside of the downtown Halifax area, off the Bedford Highway, but its worth the trip! When you order a burger you might be surprised at the pricing until you see the size of the burger. The burger's are very cheap but they are almost snack size. I'm not sure why they do that but its a lot of fun and the burger's are so good, you always go back for more! I have also had the Fish and Chips which were some of the best in the city. The staff at the Chicken Burger are very nice and sort of have the kind of friendly personality you would expect if you were going to travel back in time and go to a Diner sixty years ago. The only warning I need to give is that this Diner is busy most of the time. Not incredibly busy with waits longer than five minutes or so. But consistently busy as the restaurant is right off of the Bedford Highway which is a very busy Highway. This restaurant is a lot of fun for the whole family or if you just need a burger or fish and chip fix before you keep traveling on the Highway. The staff are fast and friendly and the quality of the food is top notch! What really sets this place apart from the rest is that its one of the few themed Diners in the city. So for standing out, serving great food, having great staff and giving customer's a consistently fun experience, five stars. read more

For those of you you have just moved here or are perhaps studying, the Chicken Burger is the oldest restaurant in Halifax. Dating back to the 1940's... possibly earlier. (DON'T QUOTE ME FOR THIS). I'm hoping I don't stir up too much dislike with my review... but here goes! *GULP* Let's start off with the restaurant itself. I love the authentic and old look this place has. Despite all the chains that have placed themselves right beside this restaurant, The Chickenburger has not changed its looks which I love. With the old Coca-Cola ads, the tacky (yet awesome) decor and the jukebox in the corner. The atmosphere is so loveable. ....and then the food. With a name like "The Chickenburger", it certainly doesn't have a good chicken burger. Remember the rolls you get at restaurants? The one's that scream "it's tradition that we serve bread with soups so... here's a tiny roll". That's what they use for a bun. Though I love that they serve what appears to be fresh chicken, where's the taste? Where's the cheese? Where's the mayo? Where's the... the... OOMPH?! It's just chicken in between bread and the sandwiches are so small you need to buy more than one. A little bummed, you take a sip of your milkshake and your trip becomes totally worth it. Now THOSE are delicious. But in my books, I can only give this place a 2 star rating. read more

Not sure what the attraction is. Food is average to below average for price. Chicken burger is a very small bread bun/roll with chopped up meat. I guess this is to allow all of the meat of a chicken to be used. Fish and chips were Ok but the batter is a little too heavy. Everyone goes on about the jukebox but it is nothing special, which sums up the place. You can knock chain fast food but it gives you decent food for the right place. Will not be visiting again but at least we gave it a go. Would not recommend even for a quick bite. Update 29 Jan. A quick response from the management impressed me. However I still stand by my original review. It is an acquired taste, it is just not for me. I would recommend that they use less "floppy" buns as they don't hold their shape and meat falls out. One for the ages! I'd have to agree with Robert K, not many people understand the Chicken Burger. For who among us can understand the marvels of the universe. Why thunder never strikes the same place twice, how Cher stays alive, why the chickenburger is the ultimate in diner excellence!? I'll tell you who, Haligonians. It has been there for ages and has a beautiful old school diner feel. I used to go there as a kid for a hot dog (not chickenburger) and to play the old school jukebox. The best song on there is The Monster Mash. You must play it when you go there. No seriously, it must be played while you eat your meal. Now that I'm an adult I have broadened my tastes and relish any chance for a chicken burger. Get it with cranberry sauce and onions, the best. You will never find a fresher bun. Speaking for myself and all of my friends, we all absolutely love everything about The Chickenburger! The ambiance, decor and environment alone are enough to keep us taking steady trips from Sackville into Bedford in dire anticipation. And then there is the food...an entire menu that cannot be touched by ANY other "good food fast" restaurant in the area. The chickenburgers themselves are a very unique addition to the classic array of burgers, fries, etc. Tender chunks of REAL chicken - very flavourful with a choice of mayo, cranberry, onion, and other classic burger condiments are sure to please. The fresh made, never frozen burgers are cooked right before your eyes and can go head to head and win against any burger in town. And then of course the old fashioned milkshakes are always crowd pleasers on a hot summer day. As a university student, and a frequenter of the Halifax core, my friends and I are all very excited for the opening of the new Queen Street location. Finally something new, affordable and exciting for the whole family in the downtown area. You know how when you can't have something, most of the time that just makes you want it more? That's the way I feel about The Chicken Burger, it's too far for me to go there very often, but I'm always craving it. I love eating inside because of the Chicken Burger's 1950's diner atmosphere. The decor is complete with stools (that no matter how you position yourself you always feel like you are going to fall off of) and a jukebox (trust me, it will brighten your day to hear an oldie you love unexpectedly). If it is hot and busy (and it normally is during the summer) you can sit outside at one of the Picnic tables, just beside the parking lot. The chicken burger after which this diner is named is made with real chunks of chicken and your choice of sauce on a white bun. That's it, it's actually pretty simple. What makes it so great is the home cooked feel you get when you eat the chicken. As my boyfriend once put it- it's the type of place you don't mind finding a bone in your meal, because it's reassuring that what you are eating isn't overly processed. There is a wide menu that extends beyond the land of chicken and into the world of beef, but I have yet to dabble there. For now I am more than content having my chicken burger with lt. mayo. Hot Hint: Get change at the cash register for the jukebox, it takes quarters. read more

I found the chicken burger way too salty. I have not tried anything else here but the chicken burger. I tried a cheese burger at the other location in the south end and nothing wrong with that but the chicken burger I had in Bedford tasted like sombody spilled the salt shaker on it. The service here was good however and I am sure I will have a mob after me for saying this but do the same people come here everyday? Just wondering becuase the three guys in line in front of me all in there 60's did not even have to order. The person at the counter was just like hi Bill same old he nods then the next one same thing. The guy after that was like no not the same. I am going to change it up to keep ya on your pretty little toes. I love The Chicken Burger. My family has been coming to it since it opened, I think. Whenever I come back to Halifax for a visit I have to come and eat here. How do they make their chicken burgers so flavourful and delicious?? I don't know what the secret is, but I'm all for it! Also, they have a jukebox, awesome milkshakes, and many clothing items with chickens on them for sale. It's a little kitsch but it's also really delicious. read more
